The 2012 Boating season is here !

This checklist is an aid to make sure you are prepared for an enjoyable and safe season.

Documents: Review your license, registration, insurance and

other important documents pertaining to your boat and trailer,

and store them in a watertight bag or container.

Life jackets: Make sure each person has a properly sized life

jacket in good condition with no rips or missing parts.

Fire extinguishers: Make sure onboard fire extinguishers are

fully charged, properly mounted and the correct class for your

vessel. Turn dry chemical extinguishers upside down to loosen

the powder. Replace or refill expired units.

Flares: Replace outdated flares, and keep old ones on board as

spares.

Charts and maps: Review and update as necessary.

Plugs: Inspect and tighten drain plugs. Make sure rubber seals

or gaskets haven’t cracked or dried out in storage.

Hoses and clamps: Inspect and replace as necessary.

Propellers: Inspect for dings, pitting, cracks and distortion.

Damaged props can cause unwanted vibration and drive train

damage. Make sure connectors such as cotter pins are secure,

and grip the prop to check for looseness. If the shaft is loose,

consider replacing the bearing.

Inboards: Examine the rudderstock to ensure it has not been

bent or compromised.

Hull: Inspect for blisters, distortions, cracks and compromised

rivets.

Water intake strainer: Make sure your strainer is secure,

unobstructed and corrosion free.

Large inboards: Check the engine shaft and rudder stuffing

boxes for looseness before and after launch. Make sure

through-hulls don’t leak.

Outboards and outdrives: Inspect outdrive bellows for cracks,

dryness or deterioration, paying careful attention to the folds.

Replace questionable bellows.

Fluid levels: Check all fluid levels, including engine oil, power

steering and power trim reservoirs. Replace worn-out zincs.

Control cables: Inspect the outer jackets, and replace cables

showing cracks, swelling, corrosion or deterioration.

Fuel lines: Inspect fuel lines, including fill and vent hoses,

for softness, brittleness or cracking.

Fuel tanks: Check your tanks and pumps, and replace filters

annually. Consider using a fuel stabilizer.

Hoses: Inspect cooling, exhaust and blower hoses and pipes for

stiffness, rot and leaks. Make sure hoses are connected tightly;

double clamp them if necessary.

Electrical connections: Inspect for cleanliness and tightness.

Corrosion, especially on battery cables, could indicate a poor

connection. Remove the terminals, and wire-brush them along

with the cable ends.

Running and navigation lights: Make sure all running lights

work. Keep spare navigation bulbs on board.

Emergency lights: Inspect emergency lights and signal devices,

and make sure you have spare batteries.

Ignition kill switch: Ensure it’s working properly.

Bilge pumps: Check for leaks and corrosion, and make sure the

float switch works.

Ropes and lines: Inspect for damage, chafing and deterioration,

and replace as necessary. Pay out and thoroughly inspect your

anchor line. Keep lines untangled and coiled for ease of use.

* This checklist is provided with permission from the United Stated Power Squadron’s Compass www.theensign.org/usscompass/compassarchive.htm The checklist is by no means exhaustive, and should be considered a starting point. You should further modify it to suit your specific boat, trailer, and usage requirements.

Sanding Boat Bottoms… In short, all dust and debris from sanding of boat bottoms must be contained and collected. Debris falling on the ground must be vacuumed up (not just swept) and the area around and under the vessel must be left clean. The intent is to stop rain from washing the paint debris into the storm sewers and ultimately into the Sound. Never use a hose to clean the area !

Not sanding on windy days, using plastic tarps to capture paint chips, and using a dust free sander are the best ways to comply with these new practices. Cove has a few of these special sanders available for rent on a limited basis (at a minimal fee – see our Service dept). Please note that work done by our Service department meets this new requirement and we request DIY boat owners and subcontractors to do the same.

Disposing of Painting Supplies… Please allow paint to dry in cans, tray liners and on brushes or rollers BEFORE putting them into the dumpsters. Leave cans open to insure drying. This will prevent toxic liquids with solvents from polluting. Please ask the service department if you have thinners, solvents or oil to dispose of. Additionally, both Rex and Cove have distributed recycling receptacles throughout the facilities for collecting recyclable plastics, glass and aluminium (non deposit) items.

There are multiple nests beginning up the Norwalk River near the I-95 bridge , on the flashing green rock pile #1 (aka “buglight”) off of Vet’s Park, another on a pole at Calf Pasture Beach behind the Cove administration buildings and one out near the power plant on Manresa Island.

Watching as one, struggling to gain altitude after snagging a large fish, was attacked by a jealous seagull, hoping to win the fish. The Osprey’s partner, circling overhead, went into a steep dive and clipped the seagull in mid air, scaring him off. An incredible display of nature, right in our own back yard !

The Osprey’s, who migrate as far as South America during the winter, can grow as large as 24″ long with a 71″ wing span ! On the endangered list during the early eighties, their population had dwindled to 150 nests between NY and Boston. Their population has recovered as a result of bans on DDT and insecticides, though they are still considered “Special Concern” status.

As fuel prices continue to increase, getting every ounce of energy and mileage from every gallon of gasoline or diesel fuel is important. It is well known that carbon deposits (called ‘gunk’) reduce engine efficiency and increase fuel consumption. Using a gasoline or diesel fuel with the right fuel additive to keep your boat’s engine free of gunk is an important way to maximize your boat engine’s fuel efficiency and reduce your engine’s fuel consumption.

Just think! A 3% reduction in fuel consumption is equivalent to saving 10 – 15 cents pergallon when fuel is $4 to $5 per gallon.

How can boaters know which fuel or fuel additive can clean up deposits and improve fuel economy?

U.S. EPA regulations require refiners to add a detergent additive to gasoline to help keep fuel systems clean of carbon deposits. Since refiners primarily produce gasoline for cars, their automotive grade gasoline typically contains enough detergent additives to meet the EPA’s requirement to keep a car’s fuel system clean. Since your boat’s engine(s) can burn up to 20 times fore fuel per hour than your car or truck, it needs more detergent additive to help prevent deposits from forming.

To get the best fuel economy from your marine engine, use only ValvTect Marine Fuels or ValvTect Marine Fuel additives sold at the Norwalk Cove Marina Fuel Dock.
