Members of the public in are being asked to give their views to help develop a top website for Norfolk and Suffolk’s mental health services.

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust have devised a survey to determine what people are looking for in their healthcare websites. The survey can be accessed by the following link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/NSFTwebsite

The website survey follows the merger of the former Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust and the former Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust to form the new, joint Trust in 1 January 2012.

The quick survey asks a variety of questions such as whether there should be a series of websites for the different services provided by the Trust, how the website should look and feel, and what information will be the most useful to people visiting the site.

One of the proposals that the Trust are also consulting on is the potential to develop an extranet dedicated to partners - such as GPs, health colleagues, education professionals, housing associations – to improve their access to mental health resources.

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, learning disability and substance misuse services in East Anglia, to an area which serves a population of some 1.5m people.

Happy New Year to everyone in the King Street Cultural Quarter. Hope you had a good festive season and that 2012 has started well for you.

We thought it would be useful to keep you updated on how the King Street Cultural Quarter is progressing, let you know ways you can be involved and get your thoughts on ideas.

WALKING SIGNAGE
The finial design for the new walking signs on King Street

There are plans for new walking signs along King Street and the Riverside, to link our part of the City to the walking signage elsewhere in the City centre.

Signs around the City, including the Station, will signpost walkers to King Street. Once walkers are in King Street places like Dragon Hall, St Julian’s and the walking bridges will be signed.

We’ll let you know when the signs are likely to be installed.

Thank you to Kieran Yates from Norwich City Council who came along to go through the walking signage plans. The new signs are funded from the Lady Julian Bridge project.

SECRETARIAL SUPPORT
A big thank you to Natasha and Brenda, without them the Cultural Quarter wouldn’t have existed. They’ve been carrying out the organisational & secretarial side of the King Street Cultural Quarter, but sadly their contracts at Dragon Hall will finish in March. We wish them luck with new projects.

As such we need to find someone to help with the membership management. Perhaps you have some spare staff time or know someone who would like some part-time secretarial work.

Please get in touch with Jason, the Cultural Quarter Chair (chair@kingst.co.uk), and we can look at ways to fund a part-time position.

MEMBERSHIP
The development of the King Street Cultural Quarter is all about the members of the Quarter. The more people who join, the better the representation and chance of carrying out projects.

If you haven’t already filled in the membership form online, please do. Membership is FREE, whether you are an individual or an organisation.

KING STREET FESTIVAL & OTHER EVENTS
The events committee have been looking at event possibilities for the Cultural Quarter.

Originally there was a suggestion that the King Street Festival should be started again. Whether that is wanted by the community will become clear over time, but there is definitely support for community events.

Events will only happen with good support, so if you can help please volunteer to be on the committee or to help out at events. Email: membership@kingst.co.uk

COMMITTEES – HELP PLEASE
The King Street Cultural Quarter will only be as good as the people involved.

At the moment there is the main committee, which has gained the name of the Executive Committee, but this seems a little formal. Suggestions of a less formal name would be great.

There is also a sub committee which is concentrating on the Events, including some form of street celebration.

There have been suggestions of a residents association, which seems sensible. They could then discuss specific residents issues and report back to the main committee with recommendations and potential projects.

It’s clear that none of the committees will succeed without committed members and a strong chair. We still need a chair for the events committee and if the residents committee is to go ahead then we need a chair for that too. Volunteers please contact: membership@kingst.co.uk

BUSINESS LISTINGS
The King Street Cultural Quarter won’t work without business support. So we’d like to list all the organisations in the Cultural Quarter on the website: www.kingst.co.uk

We’ll then email you and request a logo, a couple photos and some blurb about your business, so we can get you listed on the website.

While the Cultural Quarter is developing this will be Free, so get in early!

The website is up and running and we’d love you to add your events to it.

You’ll need to register first if you aren’t already registered on the website (separate to membership).

TREE PLANTING
With the help of the Norwich City Council Arboricultural officer and others, efforts are currently underway to plant some much needed trees along King Street.

Hopefully this will be funded through a King Street Cultural Quarter application for a Defra-funded grant under their Big Tree Plant initiative.

Once agreement has been reached within the Council, it is hoped that the application can be submitted in March 2012 with a view to planting the trees later in the year.

The Exhibition opens at 10am and closes at 4pm.

Adults entry is £5 with accompanied children under 14 years gaining free entry.

at Neatherd High School, Norwich Rd, Dereham

Park&Ride from Dereham Station. Bus travellers from can catch the ‘Konnect Fastbus’ which runs from Norwich Thorpe Station or the First X1.

Refreshments will be available at the school.

This year’s event is being organised jointly by the MNR and Flying Pigs Large Scale Railway Modellers.

Layouts booked are: Alex Bridge; Bankfield Road; Brenlyn; Crickey; Dragonby; Grumstick & Dipplewick; Grandad’s Trains; Martin’s Sidings; Melbury; New Walmington Pier; Nibley Knoll; Poulter Bank; Purcell; Tobyham; Vintage Clockwork Trains; Zevendaal.

Also attending will be a group bringing Lego, for children to help build a track and run trains on it. This has been very successful at other exhibitions, encouraging children into the hobby. We expect there to be Model Making demonstrations.

Vegetable Soup

6 Medium Potatoes
1 Large Carrot
1 Large Leek
1 Large Courgette
1 Large Onion
Small Piece of Broccoli
75 - 100 g (3 - 4 oz) Stilton Cheese
25 g (1 oz) Butter
2 - 3 Cloves of Garlic
1 Vegetable or Chicken Stock Cube
Ground Black Pepper
1 Kettle Full Of Hot Water
To Decorate, 1 Hand Full of Freshly Chopped Parsley

* Peel, wash and chop vegetables.

* Put all vegetables into a big saucepan and crumble stock cube and black pepper on top.

* Pour over the hot water until it just reaches the top of the vegetables.

* Bring to the boil and simmer until the vegetables are cooked.

* Strain the stock into a basin and put the strained vegetables back into the saucepan.

* Add the butter and Stilton to the strained vegetables and either mash or blend the vegetables until smooth.

* Pour the stock back into the saucepan and add more black pepper if needed.

* If the soup is too thick you can add more water.

* Serve with warm baguettes and garnish with a sprinkle of chopped parsley.

* Enjoy

National Apprenticeship Week 2012: More than 850 NHS apprenticeships taken up across the county

More than 850 apprenticeships have been taken up in clinical and non-clinical roles throughout the county, since the Norfolk and Waveney NHS Apprenticeship Programme began three years ago.

Last year, NHS Norfolk and Waveney was ranked as a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer 2011, as well as being awarded the Macro Employer of the Year Award in the East of England region for its Apprenticeship Programme.

NHS Norfolk and Waveney co-ordinates the Apprenticeship Programme across the county. National Apprenticeship Week continues until February 10 and the following events are happening in Norfolk:

* Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust

Simon Wright MP is due to visit Elliot House to speak to apprentice Jack Murphy on February 10th 2012.

* The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn

An open day with practical activities takes place on February 10 for prospective entrants to apprenticeships.

There will be display boards at the hospital throughout the week, publicising the Apprenticeship Programme.

Case studies of staff who started their careers as apprentices will be published in a Norfolk Apprenticeship Programme "Hall of Fame".

* Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital

A stand with details about the Apprenticeship Programme will be in the West Atrium of the hospital all week.

* James Paget University Hospital, Gorleston

An apprenticeship information point will be in the hospital foyer all week.

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, East Coast Community Healthcare CIC and NHS Norfolk and Waveney have also been holding initiatives as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

NHS staff posts are graded from 1 to 9. Apprenticeships are a framework of qualifications that are available to all new and existing staff in bands 1 to 4 of the staffing structure, who are between the ages of 16 and 69.

Since the programme began in 2009, apprentices have secured substantive posts, as well as university places across the county.

Ian Tegerdine, Director of Workforce at NHS Norfolk and Waveney, said: “We fully support apprenticeships, and view them as an excellent way for existing and new NHS employees to gain valuable qualifications.

“All frameworks are made up of the same four core elements: a diploma, a technical certificate, and key/functional skills in maths and English.

"There are four levels available, level 2, 3, 4 and 5, and we are delighted that they have proved so popular among new and existing employees.”

Apprenticeships are available in the following skills: pharmacy, business administration, customer service, health, health and social care, information technology, accountancy, support services and horticulture.

There are also qualifications available in management and facilities management, and employees can study to become an Allied Health Professional.

FLOCK TO PENSTHORPE FOR HALF TERM FAMILY FUN!

Pensthorpe invites the whole family to take part in a range of activities to get everyone thinking about the great outdoors!

Pensthorpe Wildlife & Gardens is hosting Half Term Fun - Migrate to Pensthorpe, for a fun and educational look at the lives of the birds who call Pensthorpe home. Open daily between 10am to 4pm on Saturday 11th to Sunday 19th February 2012.

Find out more about the stunning species including the European Green Winged Teal or Tufted Ducks who migrate to Pensthorpe over the winter or peer high into the tree-tops to see if you can spot a Tawny Owl.

Nature lovers can weave through the Reserve on a self-led trail, exploring and discovering wildlife as they go. Visitors should keep their eyes peeled for communities of Long-tailed Tits swooping through the treetops or majestic Buzzards soaring overhead. Plus children can have a go at building their own nests!

The ‘WOW’ activity booklet will help children to discover the fun things to see, spot and do at Pensthorpe and inquisitive adventurers can even become a bug detective for the day and look-out for creepy crawlies on the Bug Walk.

Mark Noble, Commercial Manager at Pensthorpe Wildlife & Gardens comments: “February is one of the best times of year to explore the Reserve which is still home to some of our winter visitors who join us to escape the cold of Northern Europe. Plus, with spring on the horizon, nature starts waking up and many species start nesting, giving children a wonderful opportunity to get closer to nature”.

The event also ties in with National Nest Box week, which runs annually from Tuesday 14th February until Tuesday 21st February 2012 and raises awareness for bird welfare.
