A bull nose ring is a ring made of metal designed to be installed through the nasal septum of bulls & pigs (to prevent them from rooting) as well as domestic cattle, usually bulls. In pigs, nose rings are alternatively pierced through the rim of the nose.

So what is a bull ring and why do we use them?

A bull ring is simply a ring, usually made of brass, stainless steel or aluminum that is inserted into the septum. This is usually done by a veterinarian when an animal is between nine and twelve months of age.

So what is the purpose of a bull nose ring?

The bull ring has been used for generations as a safety measure to control an animal. The septum is a very sensitive area, so a tug on the bull ring will help to bring the animal into submission

Today I did some research on the internet about the use of Indian keywords used to search for Nose rings/nose pin. Below are the results;

Tamil keywords are: mukuthi, mookuthi, mokuthi, mukuthee
Hindi keywords are: nathni, nathli

Based on Google search volume the result are as follows;

Mookuthi: 2400 search per month
Mukuthi: 1000 search per month
Mokuthi and mukuthi: not enough data
Nathli: 1600 per month
Nathni: 1600 per month

Although the above mentioned keywords are very low in volume compared to English keywords but this word on on the increase as more Indians doing their shopping online.

The world’s most pierced woman has added more punctures to her body, bringing the grand total to 6,005.

Elaine Davidson, born in Brazil, made the Guinness World Record official in 2000 when she had a mere 462 piercings - 192 of which were in her face.

Nine years later, Davidson has thousands of piercings including more than 1,500 that she says are ‘internal.’

Surprisingly, Davidson, a nurse who now lives in Edinburgh, says she doesn’t like getting pierced and suffers for her art.

“I don’t enjoy getting pierced, but to break the record you have to get to a high level. I wanted to break the record,” the Telegraph quoted her, as saying.

“My family don’t even like tattoos or piercings. But I am happy. I decided to change myself and be me,” she added.

JUDGMENT in the Sunali Pillay "nose ring"saga is expected to be given by Judge-president Vuka Tshabalala in the Pietermaritzburg High Court today.

Sunali Pillay, 17, and her mother Navi, 40, will not give up their fight for what they believe is right.

Sunali has been embroiled in a "nose ring saga" ever since she was asked by Durban Girls' High School, where she is a grade 12 pupil, to remove the tiny gold stud because it went against the school's code of conduct.

Johannesburg, Oct. 7 -- A court in South Africa has said that a school's refusal to allow an Indian girl to wear a nose ring violated her constitutional right to abide by her religion and culture.

Sunali Pillay started the legal battle three years ago after the elite Durban Girls High School banned her from wearing the nose ring, which she said was part of her south Indian Tamil culture.

The 100 rand ($14) ring cost the family hundreds of thousands of rands in legal fees as they went through various courts, finally emerging victorious in the Johannesburg Constitutional Court, the highest ...

Indo-Americans have urged Bountiful Junior High School in Utah (USA) to apologize to its student (and her parents) who was reportedly kicked out of school for nose piercing, alleging violation of school dress code.
Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA), said that this student was apparently honoring the tradition of her father, who was reportedly from India, by putting a stud in her pierced nose. Nose piercing and nose ornaments had been a tradition of women of India for centuries and the Hindu goddesses had been depicted wearing nose ornaments.
It appeared to be discrimination. It was denying the right to this teenager to express her religious and cultural identity freely, who appeared to sincerely believe that wearing a nose stud was part of her religion and culture. School should admit its mistake and amend the dress code accordingly, Zed, who is the chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, argued.
Rajan Zed further said that they respected the school dress code policy as long as it did not violate the traditions and beliefs of the pupils. Noses of girls in India were usually pierced around puberty and it reportedly found mention in ancient Ayurvedic text. Old architecture and paintings of India depicted the presence of tradition of nose ornaments and Indian poets had been singing their praise. It appeared that the student was penalized for her beliefs.
Brent Stephens is the principal of the School which is part of Davis School District (Farmington, Utah), whose Mission Statement includes “adapt to our diverse and changing world” and part of its Belief Statement says: “Understanding and acknowledging the value of cultural and individual diversity enriches the learning environment and is essential to an interdependent, caring society.” Dr. W. Nose ring is Hindu religious symbol, says British schoolgirl

London, Oct 10 (IANS) A British teenager has forced her school to allow her to wear a nose stud, with her mother arguing it is a Hindu religious symbol that eases childbirth.Although most British schools have strict rules on facial jewellery, Shannon Connolly - backed by mother Madhu and father Brendan - claimed a nose stud is a Hindu religious requirement.

Shannon’s school in the eastern English town of Skegness relented after Racial Equality Council talks, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

Shannon’s mother told the Skegness Standard: “When you have your nose pierced, the stud goes through a nerve in your nose, which Hindus believe helps give children and makes childbirth easier.”

The school, St Clement’s College, allows children to wear only a watch and earring studs.

Shannon said: “It’s quite confusing really. I was told at home it is ok to wear it but when I get to school it’s not ok.”

However, her parents are protesting an order for her to carry a laminated card informing teachers she can wear a nose stud.

A spokeswoman for the school said: “I cannot comment on individual students. The recommendation we have received is about the nose stud, but we are a school of over 1,000 children and you cannot recognise everyone.

“We do challenge pupils on jewellery,” she added.

Last year, a catering company serving London’s Heathrow airport had to reinstate an Indian-origin worker who had been sacked for wearing a nose stud to work, which the company bars on health grounds.

Forty-year-old Amrit Lalji, who worked in the VIP lounge of Terminal One, told her employers that her nose stud was a religious symbol and signified her married status.

She was reinstated after the being supported by the Hindu Council UK, which said: “It is as integral a part of the Hindu wedding ceremony as the giving of a wedding ring is within a Christian marriage.

“These marks are not just the outward symbol of marriage - traditionally they are believed to help ensure the match is harmonious. If the company concerned allows wedding bands, we don’t see why she can’t wear a tiny nose stud.”

Her company, which bans all “flesh piercings” on the grounds that they may carry bacteria, later said Lalji had been reinstated because she was not directly engaged in catering.

US-based Indian girl’s decision to get nose pierced in trouble in US school

Washington, Oct 27 (IANS) An Indian-American girl kicked out of her school in Utah state for wearing a traditional nose ring is back in her class after she exchanged it for an almost invisible transparent stud.

School authorities at the Bountiful Junior High School agreed to accept the stud after their action caused a minor storm with an Indian American group alleging that the school was denying the teenager’s right to express her religious and cultural identity.

Born to an American mother and an Indian Sikh father, Suzannah Pabla was sent home in mid-October when she wore the nose ring, a local TV report said.

While school officials said it was simply an even-handed application of school dress code, Pabla’s mother Shirley alleged racial discrimination.

Suzannah’s parents divorced and her father moved out of state. She sometimes worships as a Mormon, sometimes in her father’s Sikh faith.

Before the issue was resolved, authorities said they consulted the Religious Roundtable of Salt Lake.

“What they told us is it’s cultural, it isn’t a religious tenet. And that part of the Hindu culture is that a nose ring like this signifies someone’s been married,” Davis School District spokesman Chris Williams Williams said.

Leaders of the Indian-American community said the student was apparently honouring the tradition of her father by putting a stud in her pierced nose. They demanded that the school admit its mistake, reinstate and apologise to Pabla and her parents.

A spokesman of the Davis County School District, which administers the school, admitted that Bounty Junior High had a stricter dress code than the district norm.

“I wanted to be like more of half my culture,” Suzannah Pabla was quoted as saying by KSL-TV. Her mother, Shirley, said: “She’s just embracing her heritage. I want her to.

“Every school has their prerogative, as long as it’s more, in addition to our district dress policy,” Shirley said. “It’s her dad’s religious thing, it’s you know, come on!”
