An exciting, informative, and exhausting week, RE:Invent has been one of the best conferences of the year for each of it's three years. The announcements are great, sessions informative, and of course the parties are stellar (sooo many evening events this year).

The keynotes are always fun, and the stories of Coke or Johnson & Johnson discovering the agility and capabilities of AWS are always interesting and informative, but to be honest are starting to sound the same. Great stories, great and bigger companies involved but still it's still the "slow, expensive and lumbering to fast, easy and agile" trope. I know AWS is still wooing the Enterprise, trying to convince them "The New Normal" is all in the cloud and the stories these giants tell make the point to The Enterprise guy, but here's hoping for something a little bizarre next year. Looking forward to"Lambda:how we turned our compute needs into something out of Star Trek."

Not that there weren't signs of innovation, vision, even dreaming from the big guys, Phillips made an plea for real-time health care that, while not yet realized, calls for single visit pathology that can diagnose virtually any disease, up to and including cancer. It was an amazing vision (if not as exciting a speech as possible). The technical hurdles are high, but AWS and Phillips made the case they can overcome (including the real-time processing of 500GB of biopsy data)

By far the funnest and perhaps most technically impress presentation was Major League Baseball's "Statcast" product. Using high resolution radar, multiple optical feeds, and AWS processing over 17PB of data a game, it tracks ball position metrics 20,000 times a second, and player position 30 times a second to create this:

Real time monitoring and reporting of not only what happened, but what could have happened. I'm not a big lover of baseball, but dang, that is cool.

My favorite slide of the entire conference presented perhaps the most off the wall use for AWS yet. Keeping the sushi in a conveyor belt sushi joint in Japan fresh.. AWS, keeping my food edible since 2014. That's innovation I can really get behind.

So very interesting move, AT&T has been struggling to get back to the converged vision they had in the 90s/2000s when the MCI books were so cooked AT&T changed paths. The budged for U-Verse was effectively unlimited last time I checked, real content with real subscribers will bring a lot to the market.

Politics, ok just this once one

This tangentially relates to cloud cause this friend is someone I've met over twitter.

This friend (who I only hear from on twitter) works for the World Health Organization in Fiji, his wife (in every thing but the ceremony) is a mountain rescue ranger trained in the Alps and with experience Italy, the US and South Pacific (Fiji after all) . He spent months in Syrian refugee camps in the spring, and was asked to go back with his wife. Of course they went. Currently in Jordan (Lebanon yesterday) a woman came up to him in the camp, spit on him, and asked "Where is America? ". Her son had just been killed.

"Where is America?" We've sent over a billion in aid, pledged about 5 billion, but I still have to ask " Where's America". I avoid politics here because, frankly, mine are insane to most of you, but " where's America?" Sometimes it becomes necessary to act.

This shouldn't be a question. The US and Russia need to stop snarling at each other and do something. Time to enforce a truce, Presidents Putin and Obama can, and should, shut this thing down, with their militaries if necessary. Work together guys, stop the killing instead of growling at each other.

This has gone beyond political question to a moral one and a personal one for me. "Where is America?" Indeed .
