Scottish-born guitar whiz and singer-songwriter, Bert Jansch. A pioneering force in the English folk movement starting in the mid-60s, he was often described as the "Hendrix of the acoustic guitar" and made highly alluring albums to back up that hype- ones that put him a cut above most on that folk scene indeed.

Sound & Groove: "California On My Mind" Part 2

The royal couple of country music throughout (and even after) their marriage, George Jones and Tammy Wynette had a tumultuous relationship marked by an intense love that was marred by Jones's frequent serious bouts of alcoholism. They had their union play out on the stage and on record as well, where several of their duet album and single releases become C&W chart smashes. Even a divorce in 1976 didn't stop their collaborations entirely. One of their signature hits together is featured on this 2nd episode of S&G's "California On My Mind" theme.

The criminally little-known but influential Los Angeles-based outfit X, which put out several tremendous albums in the first half of the 80s with a sound that may have been dubbed punk at the outset but showed a unique sense of melody, vocal harmony and cohesion missing from most music in the genre or the L.A. punk territory in general. Though they'd slowly veer toward a brighter, more rockabilly "cowpunk" type of sound before their first split as a group in 1986, X would endure as one of the truly original groups of that scene

The off & on leading force behind the influential UK prog rock outfit Van Der Graaf Generator as well as a prolific solo artist with over 30 solo albums in a 5 decade record industry career, Peter Hamill has been an odd, idiosyncratic beacon of creativity in his own unique right. From throaty, vocally extravagant pieces of long-form art rock to quiet, solemn, hymn-like compositions, Hamill has never failed to intrigue during his low-key yet vibrant career. One of his top cuts from the mid-70s makes an appearance on this particular S&G podcast- the official final one of 2018.

Sound & Groove: "Come Fly With Me" Part 1

A troubled, yet gifted and highly envied songwriter, Townes Van Zandt's career was often interrupted by long bouts of inactivity after the early 70s- mainly due to his battles with manic depression, drug and alcohol abuse that ultimately cut short his life at age 52 in 1997. But in his late 60s and early 70s prime, he formed into one of the preeminent figures of the growing singer-songwriter movement, but of the wing that consisted of musicians steeped in the country and/or bluegrass sensibilities of the South finding success with a folkier style that played to the coffee houses of hot spots such as San Antonio, Austin, Nashville and Memphis. One of his best tracks from his only studio album released between 1973 and 1986 (Flyin' Shoes) is featured on Part 1 of this S&G theme.

Back in the days before TSN and Sportsnet wiped out local sports programming, fans would get their fix from the faces and voices of guys— and some gals— on the conventional TV channels. In its heyday in the 80s, I was the guy on Toronto CBC TV, Joe Tilley worked late night CTV and over at Global Mark Hebscher partnered with Jim Tatti on Sportsline.

One of the more forgotten, overlooked, yet brilliant musical acts Australia has ever produced, the Go-Betweens never found substantial commercial success but brought indie credibility. Along with Nick Cave, represented a sudden musical boom in the 1980s out of the Queensland capital city Brisbane. Slowly emerging from their art-punk roots upon their 1977 formation into a shimmering, dreamy, jangly pop-rock band, the Go-Betweens put out a series of amazing albums in the mid-80s until a 1989 breakup. The split lasted 11 years until primary members Robert Forster & Grant McLennan reunited for 2 more albums under the name- a revival sadly cut short by McLennan's heart attack death in 2006.

The Canadian golf season is heading into the back half of the season, and across the country players are dealing with extremes of all kinds in weather. Meanwhile, Horty talks the elements— how to deal with blazing heat, stiff winds and even smoke from forest fires.

In Paul’s Pointers we tackle the voodoo of sand play. It scares many inexperienced layers but it can be a reliable shot for more experienced players. Paul will guide us on the tricks and trade of sand play.

We’ve seen all four majors on the PGA Tour this season, and have only the FedEx Cup and Ryder Cup left in the schedule. Let’s take stock of who’s the Player of the Year in Horty’s Handicapping.

In their mid-70s prime, Dr. Feelgood stood as arguably the most vital of the so-called "pub rock" acts to emerge. They were a grungy, cutting, sneering antidote to the polished, formulaic glam rock or treacly bubblegum pop dominating the charts at the time in the UK. Though bands like them harkened back to the devotedly pure R&B, blues, rockabilly and soul of the mid-60s British music scene, their uncompromising sound and attitude did actually pave the way for numerous punk and new wave bands who by decade's end were stealing the show (by then Dr. Feelgood was struggling to stay relevant , though doing so better than many of the glam bands they stood in defiance of).

If anyone was expecting the Trump presidency to settle down they’ve been disabused of that notion. The non-stop attempts of his pursuers to trap Trump have only gotten more fevered as the second yea of Trump’s term has unfolded.

Trump supporters point to the vibrant economy, his two Supreme Court nominees, his progress in North Korea, his rollbacks of Obama era over-reach and, most of all, the revelations that people inside the government talked openly of undermining his election.

Trump’s enemies point to the chaos at the border, his turbulent management style, his refusal to put distance between himself and Vladimir Putin, his exaggerations and now his tariff wars with friends and rivals in the world.

One thing is clear since Donald Trump was named President: no one has changed anyone else’s mind since the day Trump shocked the world in 2016.

Following Trump's Presidency up close and personal is Debra Saunders, a longtime columnist and reporter who’s the White House correspondent for the Las Vegas Review Journal with her work appearing across America in the Creators Syndicate outlets. Andrew Prossin is the CEO of One Ocean and he grew up dreaming of the sea in Cape Breton.
Later on he was winning races across the Atlantic in a 30-foot sailboat and sailing around Cape
Horn in a 70-knot Southern Ocean gale.

Prossin and One Ocean have added a unique golf and cruising line called Fiddles & Sticks, a marriage of great courses in the Maritimes such as Cabot Links and Cliffs, Crowbush Cove and Highland Links. We sat down with him on the Russian ship Akakdemik Ioffe on the inaugural cruise and asked him how a kid from Sydney became so enamoured with sailing.

With rough-hewn vocals that could belt out soul and blues, but also provide a soft crooner warmth to handle the ballads, Bobby "Blue" Bland emerged from the thriving Memphis Beale Street blues scene of the early 50s to carve out a career as one of the more influential R&B singers over the next 2 decade. A carer lull as tastes changed toward Philly Soul and funk in the late 60s/early 70s would end when he made a mid-70s comeback to commercial and critical success with a series of fine, blues-influenced releases on ABC records. He eventually settled into the blues revival scene during the 80s and toured those circuits until his death at age 83 in 2013. One of his mid-70s comeback hits is featured on this 1st official S&G Podcast of 2018.

This is the 1st official podcast episode of 2018 here on the Sound & Groove Podcast. It's long overdue but no need to worry, as this will be followed by 5 more during the calendar year. The Full Count - Heather MacDonald

In an earlier episode of The Full Count author and social critic Heather MacDonald told us about the falsehoods behind the Black Lives Matter propaganda. Heather described how cops were being blamed in the media for targeting blacks-- even as they ignore murder rates among black teenagers that are ten times the combined rate of whites and latino teenagers.

In her City Journal column she has pointed out FBI statistics that show in 2016 just 16 unarmed blacks-- in a population of 37 million-- were killed by cops. She’s shown how a 20-year decline in violent crime was reversed in 2015— coincidental with the Obama administration’s embrace of the Black Lives Matter agenda that blames cops.

Needless to say such candour has attracted the attention of the extreme Left that tries to ban such heresies.

Students at Claremont College said, “Heather MacDonald is a fascist, a white supremacist, a warhawk, a transphobe, a queerphobe, a classist, and ignorant of interlocking systems of domination that produce the lethal conditions under which oppressed peoples are forced to live,”

The Atlantic magazine wrote "If you believe that the criminal justice system is racially biased, you need to know Heather MacDonald. She’ll mess with your mind and make you either up your politico-cultural game or admit you were wrong.”

This pushback against a courageous researcher with real data is why we always enjoy having her here on The Full Count.

Researchers recently announced they may have come up with way to map the damage done by concussions. They’ve developed a portable brain imaging system that uses light to detect and monitor damage in the brain from concussion. It’s called a Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

As we speak Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is watching his net value sink by
billions of dollars. That’s because the political world has decided what was fine for
Barack Obama is nigh on criminal for Donald Trump. And what is the problem?
It appears that Facebook has allowed the personal data it obtains when subscribers join
to be mined by a number of political interests. Companies such as Cambridge Analytica,
a British company, have been used by parties on both sides of the aisle to target their
voters. Some credit their work to helping Trump win the presidency. Others are not as
sure.

In Canada, it’s being claimed that the Liberals also have used this data.
Okay, that’s as sophisticated as I get on the subject. That’s why we have invited our
friend Jesse Hirsh back to the Full Count. When we don’t understand the world of data,
tech and social media we call on Jesse, who lectures and writes on these subjects t
luddites like me.

Stress is an everyday fact of modern life. The pace of life today leaves everyone a little
frazzled. We are told that stress is also a contributor to a number of illnesses— which
helps raise our stress levels even more.

For some time we’ve also known that stress can spread from one individual to another,
even though the second individual did not experience the stress. Researchers have now
discovered is that there is actually a change in the brain. This could explain a lot about
human behavior. We often feel stressed after comforting a loved one who experienced
stress – it’s possible our brains have imprinted the experience as if it happened to us.

The results of this research are published in Nature Neuroscience.

One of the authors of the research is Jaideep Bains of the Cumming School of Medicine
at University of Calgary. He joins us on this episode to talk stress and how we can
better understand to control out own levels of it. Welcome.

First things first. What is stress? We know the popular understanding a bit but describe
the chemical equations that occur in the body? Do animals feel stress in different ways
from humans?

Sound & Groove: "Colour My World" Part 2

The Pogues brought a punk energy and sensibility into the traditional Celtic music world after their arrival on the London music scene in the early 80s, unfortunately becoming almost as famous for the drunken exploits of rotten-toothed lead singer Shane MacGowan than for their music. Though this led to his sacking in 1990, the Pogues had a tremendous run with him as the face of the group (writing and singing-wise). Their onstage performances could be sloppy, unhinged and frenetic yet chaotically beautiful like a massive wall of Irish whimsy and spirit in sound. And it actually was some of the most heartfelt, inspired work to come out of the UK in the entire 80s (a decade often marred by style over substance, image over message and gloss over honesty).

Whatever you think of its methods, the #metoo campaign has had an enormous impact.
The issue of sexual assault, sexual harassment and public disgrace has made
headlines in the past months. From Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein to senator Al
Franken to Ontario conservative leader Patrick Brown, the high and mighty have fallen
like ten pins.

While nearly everyone agrees with the overarching principle, many are growing
concerned with the methods used to achieve these ends. Anonymous complaints,
allegations that date from 20- 30 years ago, an unseemly rush to judgement have all
been features of this campaign.

National Post columnist Barbara Kay says it’s time to pause for a breath. In her column
she writes: "Workplace sex is the only sport in town where any adult is eligible to play,
but there are no protocols, no referees, the goalposts keep moving, and fouls are made
up on the spot (or years later) by disgruntled players with no numbers on their jerseys.
Penalties and suspensions are imposed by angry spectators, but only on the players of
one team.”

the greatest doctors and researchers in the world are pointless unless there’s an

The B-side "Amen Brother" featured a drum break groove that later lived on in infamy as one of the most sampled in the history of hip-hop & electronic music. They may be the most obscure artists on this episode but their hit featured here does live on as a soul classic with a wholesome, heartwarming message in a time of acid, protest and war splitting apart the USA

The Hurt Take - Episode XXXVII

UFC 219 was supposed to end the year on a bang after a difficult 2017 for the UFC. It was supposed to put Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos on the map as the best female fighter ever. It was supposed to add Khabib "the Eagle" Nurmagomedov in the love triangle for the Lightweight belt with Tony "El Cucuy" Ferguson and Conor McGregor. It did all those things. Funny how meeting expectations can be really underwhelming.

There's never enough MMA news to talk about! The week in MMA was loaded, from news about Conor McGregor and GSP to title fight announcements at UFC Middleweight and Heavyweight. Bellator had a title fight (that no one saw) while the UFC had a nice little Fight Night card (with some excellent highlights). The cherry on top was a boxing fight for the hardcore fans out there with Vasyl Lomanchenko taking on Guillermo Rigondeaux. But what got Rhys really going? His awe of the lighter weight classes.

Even if the rest of the card had been a dumpster fire, that's enough to put it up there among the best of the year. But guess what? The rest of the card wasn't a dumpster fire! It was on fire! We have Max Holloway, who officially ended any thoughts of Jose Aldo reigning again, and Francis N'Gannou, who hit Alistair Overeem so hard Overeem nearly did a backflip, to thank for that.

1978 saw Elvis Costello release his sophomore effort but this time with his road band, the Attractions, credited along with him. The result was a pile-driving, snarling, edgy, yet melodic and well-crafted album entitled This Year's Model. It produced a few hit singles but more importantly sprung the unlikely looking rock star to a new level of critical and commercial fame- one that had a few bumps along the way before he found a more settled, mellow period of his career in the mid-80s. The debate raged on about whether he was punk or simply just pub rock or even power pop but Elvis embarked on a career where he tackled just about every genre under the sun and proved himself an intelligent, subversive singer-songwriter along the way that wasn't defined by his earlier, guitar-driven compositions.

By 1973, there was no bigger soul star than Al Green. Just when the Memphis-based soul scene looked played out and all but spent as a commercial force as the 70's dawned, green emerged from a little known record label called hi records to revive the sound. With Willie Mitchell as a writing and production guide, a string of smash hit singles and LP's resulted over the next 7 years- though the hot streak wavered by the end with the advent of disco.
