After talking with Tyger, we are making an official policy announcement regarding kids at Notacon.

“Our new policy for 2012 is that kids 12 and under may attend Notacon for free as long as they are accompanied by a registered parent or guardian. Please note that while we have some programming for younger people, the event is geared towards and intended primarily for adults. Some content may not be appropriate for children. However, what you wish to expose your child to and teach them is YOUR choice, not ours.”

We recognize that a lot of people that attend Notacon are also parents. We also know that a lot of parents may want to bring their children. In the past we had an unofficial policy of making exceptions when people asked. However, I think we’re to the point where having something explicit makes sense.

That said, we want to state that we will not “dumb down” or ask people to watch what they say or do simply because there are kids present. We simply ask that participants maintain basic civility and decorum with each other as has been our policy since the first Notacon. People acting like asshats will treated appropriately. Likewise, parents should use good judgment when deciding what events and presentations they attend with their children and are responsible for accompanying them at all times.

As Notacon and PixelJam approach, we thought it appropriate to launch the new and updated PixelJam 2012 website, complete with all of our compos and rules (which, of course, may be subject to some change).

What’s new this year? Check it out!

Most competitions now allow for remote entries. Submit yours and become famous!

PixelJam is teaming up with the creative minds behind the criticalartware glitch/artware crew. We’ve officially included a glitch/artware category as well as a unique category called newGame++, which in a lot of ways is a take on our old “Anything but Ethernet contest”, but applied to video games.

Since games are a big part of the event, we added a separate video game category. Entrants can submit their video games for play testing by the voters and can demonstrate their game during the party.

Our new Combined Demo category allows for both new and oldskool entries.

Our new Freestyle Music category is open to all music, tracked and non-tracked. If it’s music, you can enter it!

Prizes! Prizes! Prizes! We are still working on all of the final details, but we are working on providing big cash prizes for some of our major categories. If you’re interested in providing prizes, please let us know

Of course, we are revamping and improving our PixelJam lounge with new places to play and more room to work. We’ll still have the same awesome projector and audio system to showcase all of our entries, so prepare yourself for an awesome show!

It took us a little while longer than we would have liked, but we are proud to announce our first round of presentation acceptances for Notacon 9! This early round of acceptances includes talks from a variety of interesting subjects, including game development, video synthesizers, locksport, as well as netsec security. Please see the Notacon website for a detailed listing of our presentations and presenters.

We anticipate accepting over 30 presentations for Notacon 9. Anyone interested in submitting a proposal should check out our CFP guidelines and present it to us on or before February 3rd, 2012. The number and quality of proposals submitted thus far has been great, but new ideas and topics are always encouraged. Therefore, please consider submitting a proposal to Notacon, especially if you are new to speaking or do not fit into the typical framework of a standard hacker con!

More exciting developments are still in progress and will be announced over the next few weeks!
