Laptop this, laptop that, but you still need a desktop for a number of reasons, unless of course you don't :-) Obviously the importance of desktops has decreased significantly the last few years, but don't count them out just yet!

Best Buy has desktop packages starting at $300, good for the whole week, until Saturday May 30, 2009.

There are 11 models shown at the link above, let's take a look at some of the most interesting ones price-wise!

We start at $300, where we find the eMachines ET1161-05, paired with a 18.5" widescreen LCD display. Not bad at all eh? Can you get a laptop for that and with a big screen like that? Obviously NOT! However, this is not intended for heavy-duty processing, as it has the AMD Athlon LE-1620 single-core processor, but it does have a reasonable 2gb of memory, 160gb hard disk, NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE graphics, card reader, and Vista Basic SP1. You can't really complain for all these, can you? :-)

And remember, there are absolutely no rebates to submit whatsoever at Best Buy!

If you want a more upscale model, you can pay $500 and get the dual-core HP a6814y Desktop which uses the Pentium E5200 dual-core processor and also comes with a slightly larger 19-inch LCD Monitor. And all the other features are better as well, such as six (6) gigabytes of RAM (main memory), 640gb hard disk spinning at 7200rpm, Intel GMA 3100 w/128MB dedicated, DVD burner, and of course 64-bit Vista since that's the only Windows-way to take advantage of the extra memory above 4gigs. Yes, one of those "we'll never need more than that" types of deals. Aye, aye, aye!

The same bundle as above, but with the addition of the HP D1530 deskjet printer only goes for $30 more. This is good assuming you need the printer, otherwise the printer will end up eating up space!

From there, we have more models, which we'll let you explore. They go as high as $2300, which as you can expect, they are the overhyped and overrated (oh my, what sacrilege) iMacs.

Monitor specials at Best Buy

In addition to the desktop deals, Best Buy is offering some interesting widescreen LCD displays on sale.

Starting with the 19" LCD W1952TQ-TF for $170. This has a very fast 2ms response-time, and a 10000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Not bad, but if you want a bigger surface, then the 22" LG W2252TQ-TF can be yours for $240.

If you are the Dell type, you can get the 20" Dell S2009W for $180. This is a 16:9 aspect ratio monitor, ideal for movie and high-def video fans, and it is a Best Buy retail-store exclusive model. Oh so many exclusive, so little time at Best Buy. When you are so big, you can dictate to the manufacturers what you want!

If you want a bigger surface, you can get the Dell S2409W at $320, which is a 24" LCD, also with a 16:9 aspect ratoi, and with the "HD" tag added to their name. HD of course is the 1920x1080 resolution, which video fans may know as 1080p.

Three desktops at Best Buy this week

This week's circular of Best Buy has three desktop bundles. Each one includes a 19" widescreen display, and of course as always with Best Buy, there are no mail-in rebates of any sorts!

We start at $450 with the Compaq SR5710y, which has the AMD dual-core 4450e+ processor, with 3gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, Nvidia 6150SE, na dof course Vista Premium. The monitor is the Compaq WF1907.

Next we move to $550 with the HP S3700y whose monitor is the HP W1907 instead of a Compaq-branded one. The processor is a little bit better, it is the AMD dual-core 5000, with 3gb memory as well, but a better 320gb hard disk, yet with the same memory card as before.

Last but not least, at $880, we have the Gateway LX6810-01 offering a powerful alternative with the Intel Quad Q8200 processor, with a very very nice eight (8) gigabytes of memory, 640gb disk, NVidia GT120 with a very nice 1gb dedicated memory. Other features include the ability to watch and record TV, dvd burner and Vista.
