As part of the rollout of my FIGHT CARD novella 'Front Page Palooka,' I chatted with prolific blogger and crime writer Paul Brazill (author of the great 'Roman Dalton, Werewolf, P.I.' among others). In our zippy interview, we chat about my Bogie-inspired newshound, Nick Moretti – charming, yet cynical, burned-out, whiskey-sodden – the kinda old-school guy who makes sure the right hand knows exactly what the left hand is doing. We also talk about the creative process I used while writing the book and some uncommon forms of inspiration. 'Front Page Palooka' has it all... dames, dives, and hard-punching attitude so if you're in the mood for some serious hard-boiled pulp, this tale drips more whiskey than a busted Prohibition hooch barrel. Then a private citizen, Ronald Reagan spoke out against socialized medicine. There is no video because this was an LP sent out by the American Medical Association.

BAD NEWS FOR JAZZ: CAN IT BE SAVED?

In 2002, the year of the last survey, 10.8% of adult Americans attended at least one jazz performance. In 2008, that figure fell to 7.8%.

Not only is the audience for jazz shrinking, but it’s growing older—fast. The median age of adults in America who attended a live jazz performance in 2008 was 46. In 1982 it was 29.

It was a strange real-life comic book team-up that saw Jack Kirby, (the King of Comics artists) introducing Don Rickles, (the King of Insult Comics) to the comedian's long-lost costumed twin Goody Rickles, who in Superman's words, "causes more trouble than the villains." And wow... kinda sexist.

DOWNEY TO STAR AS LESTAT in 'VAMPIRE' REBOOT

First I must apologize for not posting on a more frequent basis. It's abhorrent. An embarrassment. A crime against all humanity .. err, you get the picture.

But I just found out a piece of nifty lil news thanks to Slashfilm and Bloodydisgusting.

Fresh off the heels of the new mania of everyting vampires comes this lil piece of joy... Universal is looking to reboot the cinematic incarnation of Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles."

As most fans know, the first book in the series was "Interview with the Vampire" and the film incarnation starred Tom Cruise as an androgynous Lestat as well as Brad Pitt. The next pic in the series, "Queen of the Damned" starred Stuart Townsend as Lestat. Yawn.

But here's the great news: Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to take the lead role of Lestat. Looks like Downey is cleaning up franchise-wise. And good for him. Not only do we get to see him as Tony Stark in the Iron Man franchise, but we also get to see him as Sherlock Holmes later this year.

On July 10th of this year, Anne Rice published the following statement on her official site:

We will see high quality films based on the adventures of Lestat and his friends in the future. We will see a fine film some day of Ramses the Damned. The Mayfair Witches will have new life in film. The Christ the Lord books will some day make it to the screen. Angel Time, and the future adventures of Toby O’Dare, will make it to television or film. When I have solid news of a new film based on any of my works, I will post it on this website.

RYAN REYNOLDS GREEN LANTERN FAN ART

It was confirmed last week that actor Ryan Reynolds had been cast as the title character in Martin Campbell’s big screen adaptation of The Green Lantern. Thanks to /Film for posting this fan made pic created by Josh MC, showing what Reynolds could look like in the black and green tights. Looks cool...

Despite it being a sad day in the entertainment world (I still can't belive MJ is gone forever), it was also my wedding anniversary. Two years ago, I got hitched in Sin City on 7 7 7 and was lucky enough to have a pic snapped by an Associated press shutterbug.

I sit here numb on a Friday night, late, staring at TV images of a legend gone forever. This generation's last mania-inducing legend.

Mad genius and oddball eccentric he was part Howard Hughes, part Elvis, part Mickey Mouse and that's what made him, him.

Scandals aside, my adolescence and to a large degree, even my early adulthood was consumed by his essence.

I wasn't alone. There wasn't a tucked away corner of the world where people didn't know him.

Need proof? He broke the internet when he died. Imagine that.

He's suddenly and unexpectedly gone now and I, like, the rest of the world will miss him dearly.

Many people discuss 2012 as the end of the world due to interpretations of predictions contained in the Mayan calendar. The Mayan civilization was extremely advanced in mathematics, engineering and astronomy and also had an incredible understanding of time and space.

Various calendars were in use to track time in linear progressions within cycles. The “Great Cycle” of the “Long Count” calendar equates to 5,125.36 years. The current Great Cycle is due to be completed on the winter solstice of 2012, December 21. So, it has been interpreted that on this day, the Great Cycle ends, time ends, so the Earth must end as well. However, there are different opinions on what this end date really means.

As mentioned, some believe cataclysmic events will take place in 2012 with the ultimate destruction occurring on December 21, 2012. Others believe that the world will not end, but instead humanity will enter a new age, marked by significant changes physically and mentally.

Hopefully destruction will not occur and it will be just another day. Maybe there will be some cosmic transformation. Anything is possible and it makes for an interesting discussion none-the-less.

Nonetheless, this new trailer for "2012" looks not only amazing but downright creepy...

Cover of Shutter Island: A Novel

Woo-hoo! The long anticipated trailer for Martin Scorsese's film adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel "Shutter Island" has finally hit the interbwebs.

Seems like a small departure for Scorsese - his first creepfest since "Cape Fear," the film centers on a U.S. Marshal named Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio in his fourth Marty picture) who travels to Shutter Island, a small island in Massachusetts’ Outer Harbor, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to find an escaped murderous patient in the Summer of 1954.

Here's the official plot:

“But nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. And neither is Teddy Daniels. Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumors of Ashecliffe’s radical approach to psychiatry? The closer Teddy and Chuck get to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more they begin to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island. Because someone is trying to drive them insane...”

It looks pretty kick-ass. Enjoy

"Transformers" director Michael Bay -- being Michael Bay -- commented earlier in the year that he would like to see a war between Transformers and Terminators. Funny enough,this led to "Terminator Salvation" helmer McG to start up all sorts of fake bravado...

Obviously, we’ll never see a movie where Autobots fight T800s or even those huge Harvester bots. But Black20 did the next best thing, and created a faux movie trailer mash-up titled "Transforminators."
