Most of the time we were in Beijing the temperatures hovered around 20 Celsius, under sunny skies. But when we left the hotel just after 7:00 AM Sunday, the temperature had plummeted to between 2 and 4, and there was a light cover of snow on the ground. Winter has come to northern China.

China has some of the world’s best dinosaur finds. The Beijing Museum of Natural History is not one of the top tourist attractions. There’s very little in English. But there are eight wonderful dinosaur skeletons!

Tomorrow back to Sweden (and Facebook)….

From Art Area 798, Beijing

Our last full day in Beijing. Fall has arrived. Instead of sunny skies and temperatures around 20, it’s started to sprinkle and temperatures have dropped (still a lot warmer, and a whole lot lighter, than Sweden).
Yesterday we went to three markets. It’s sometimes hard to understand where there are fast prices [...]

“It is a Great Wall” (Uncle Duke in “Doonesbury”, quoting Richard Nixon)
Today we walked on the Great Wall.
Initially we were uncertain where this was going to happen. Our guide gave up a choice between Badaling, the most popular place where most tourists go, and another place, just as close, less crowded, but “much steeper”. We [...]

Today we visited the Lama Temple, reputed to be one of the finest Tibetan Buddhist temples outside of Tibet. Regretfully we were not allowed to photograph inside, where there were wonderful and very large statues of various Buddhas. In a central hall monks were chanting, and it was very very impressive.
Afterwards it was on to [...]

We celebrated New Year’s Eve in the United States for the first time in many years (last year we were in Aswan). But something was a bit lacking as we tried to follow the arrival of midnight around the world.
All the TV channels were completely locked into Time’s Square in New York, with the exception [...]

The new California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
The museum is wonderful, especially the ran forest. But the long line to get in (one hour on a day when most people were off work or school) and for the rain forest (half an hour) meant that we didn’t have time to see the new Morrison [...]
