A stylish, minimal, mono-space font.

Supply Mono by Mathieu Desjardins is a stylish, minimal, and mono-space computer style font. The font is sharp and precise and has a visual edge that makes it appropriate for high-end design applications. Supply Mono would look smart in a portfolio of Brutalist architecture projects or minimalist geometric sculptures.

It’s a perfectly reductive elegant choice for paragraph type and captions. It also works well writ large, especially with ample letter-spacing and in the lightest version. You can also use it as any mono-space computer font, for writing code.

What makes Supply Mono stand out as an elegant choice is the use of some curves and rounded elements in the font design — this makes the design appear less boxy and clunky compared to some other mono-space fonts. The font comes in five weights making it versatile for a range of projects.

Supply Mono is free for Personal Use. Commercial licenses can also be purchased at their website.

More fun color matching resources from Google.

If you enjoyed the Google Arts & Culture app that matched your selfie to a famous work of art, you may also like Art Palette — an app that matches a 5 color palette to famous works of art.

Art Palette, new from Google’s Art & Culture, goes beyond being a novelty app and can be a useful tool for both artists and designers in exploring and discovering color and its relationships. Like most Google apps, Art Palette is a vast repository of works in a variety of styles and from multiple eras. The selection of images are from collections of artwork and antiques from museums and archives from around the world.

Google Art Palette

Users can select for complementary or incongruous palettes. When you mouse over a color swatch its hexadecimal value is displayed — this makes it simple to add the colors to a website or mobile project. You can also allow the app to generate color palettes for you or upload an image to glean color from as well.

When clicking through ‘Surprise Me’ the app generates palettes and it seems to gravitate towards warm and earth colors, most probably due to the age of some of the more ancient artifacts in the collection. It seems as if the more varied the palettes and the ones with brighter and saturated colors display more diverse types of artworks and more contemporary choices.

To see the app, just visit https://artsexperiments.withgoogle.com/artpalette/.

Highlighting a tiny book with trendy Hong Kong content.

As a kid, I had a very tiny dictionary I carried around in my back pocket that was one of my most favorite things. There’s just something really nifty and precious about objects made smaller that should be larger. The Superfine Defined miniature art book is one such object.

The book is a very small publication created for Tai Tak Takeo Fine Paper to feature Mohawk Superfine printing paper. It has all the other fine print accoutrements also like embossed titles, printed paper edges, and a black hardcover.

Superfine Defined is more than a conversation piece too. It’s designed and conceived by Creative Director Toby Ng around the concept of super fine as in most refined or top quality. The book includes new Hong Kong artists from a variety of creative disciplines sharing their insights on what it means to create work that is the finest.

Artists and designers who get the book can use it as a source of instant encouragement and inspiration; and at the same time they can also learn about and promote the thriving creative scene in Hong Kong.

How to study with an Edo period artist - online.

The Great Wave Off Kanagawa is an iconic woodblock print familiar to many and recognizable as emblematic of Japanese art. The wave arches up and appears to be right on the crest of crashing on small fishing boats off the coast of Kanagawa. The artwork captures the motion and tension of this active moment through meticulously drawn lines and variegated color. The Wave is the creation of Katsushika Hokusai, a master painter and artist of the Edo period whose work is some of the most emulated and imitated.

from Quick Lessons in Simplified Drawings

A lesser-known fact about Hokusai is that in addition to being a prolific artist he was also a teacher who created educational books about art. An insightful and useful book series he wrote is Quick Lessons in Simplified Drawings. The lessons are broken down into three volumes. Volume one is about drawing basic geometric shapes; volume two explores contour; and volume three analyzes different types of brush strokes and how to apply them.

The lessons are written in Japanese but are also presented pictorially, making them possible to follow for non-Japanese speakers. Quick Lessons in Simplified Drawings is a treasure for any drawing student or professional artist interested in learning the craft from one of the most respected artists of all time.

A new web-based tool makes layout scaling a snap.

If you’re a web designer you know how important it is to create designs that are scaled properly for a variety of screens and devices. It can also be difficult sometimes to come up with the right ratio of scale between different design elements in your layouts. A button needs to be scaled big enough to see but not disproportionately large compared to a text field, for instance.

PixelSnap is a useful new app that simplifies the process of measuring elements and space on web pages. Now you can simply drag and select to find out the scale of anything on a page. So, if you come across a site that has a layout you like you can find out the scale of the modules on the page and get a sense how other designers are scaling buttons, boxes, and text. You can measure the distance between elements and learn about how to use white space in a design as well.

The app also has features like tolerance modes to help it measure nuanced features like gradients and shadows. You can also set up a global hotkey to make quick assessments of scale in a snap.
The ad industry giant releases book on digital design.

The digital age has changed the world of design so much. Print, web, motion graphic, retail, and environmental design have all been affected. It could be argued that there is no design field unaffected. Among all design fields advertising design may be the most revolutionized.

Advertising design works across mediums and has so many applications. Over time it has become more screen-based as the world has embraced the digital. it’s helpful for designers working today to understand advertising design now in 2018 and how it’s been affected by digital technology and platforms.

That’s why Ogilvy & Mather’s new book is a key read right now for advertisers and advertising designers. Ogilvy on Advertising in the Digital Age, written by Ogilvy chairman Miles Young, includes useful strategies and insights for how to work within the current environment. The book is a sequel to David Ogilvy’s bestseller Ogilvy on Advertising and explores features of the modern marketing era and how to harness the digital in smart and effective ways.

One of the key takeaways from the book is that there has been this long held idea that there is a big difference between digital and traditional advertising. However in today’s world, advertising professionals need to differentiate less and think more about how to apply both and utilize the effectiveness of each in ways that harness their specific potential. In this way modern advertisers can come up with unique and adept strategies for products and brands.
