Four Words That Make Your Life Worthwhile

Over the years as I've sought out ideas, principles and strategies to life's challenges. I've come across four simple words that can make living worthwhile.

First, life is worthwhile if you LEARN. What you don't know WILL hurt you. You have to have learning to exist, let alone succeed. Life is worthwhile if you learn from your own experiences—negative or positive. We learn to do it right by first sometimes doing it wrong. We call that a positive negative. We also learn from other people's experiences, both positive and negative.…Learning from other people's experiences and mistakes is valuable information because we can learn what not to do without the pain of having tried and failed ourselves.

We learn by what we see, so pay attention. We learn by what we hear, so be a good listener. Now I do suggest that you should be a selective listener, don't just let anybody dump into your mental factory. We learn from what we read so learn from every source; learn from lectures; learn from songs; learn from sermons; learn from conversations with people who care. Always keep learning.

Second, life is worthwhile if you TRY. You can't just learn; now you have to try something to see if you can do it. Try to make a difference, try to make some progress, try to learn a new skill, try to learn a new sport. It doesn't mean you can do everything, but there are a lot of things you can do, if you just try. Try your best. Give it every effort. Why not go all out?

Third, life is worthwhile if you STAY. You have to stay from spring until harvest. If you have signed up for the day or for the game or for the project—see it through. Sometimes calamity comes and then it is worth wrapping it up. And that's the end, but just don't end in the middle. Maybe on the next project you pass, but on this one, if you signed up, see it through.

And lastly, life is worthwhile if you CARE. If you care at all you will get some results, if you care enough you can get incredible results. Care enough to make a difference. Care enough to turn somebody around. Care enough to start a new enterprise. Care enough to change it all. Care enough to be the highest producer. Care enough to set some records. Care enough to win.

Four powerful little words:
LEARN, TRY, STAY and CARE.

GOD Loves Teachers

On the 6th day, God created men and women.

On the 7th day, he rested.

Not so much to recuperate, but rather to prepare himself for the work he was going to do on the next day. For it was on that day—the 8th day—that God created the FIRST TEACHER.

This TEACHER, though taken from among men and women, had several significant modifications. In general, God made the TEACHER more durable than other men and women. The TEACHER was made to arise at a very early hour and to go to bed no earlier than 11:30 p.m. with no rest in between.

The TEACHER had to be able to withstand being locked up in an air-tight classroom for six hours with thirty-five "monsters"on a rainy Monday. And the TEACHER had to be fit to correct 103 term papers over Easter vacation.

Yes, God made the TEACHER tough…but gentle too. The TEACHER was equipped with soft hands to wipe away the tears of the neglected and lonely student…those of the sixteen year old girl who was not asked to the prom.

And into the TEACHER God poured a generous amount of patience. Patience when a student asks to repeat the directions the TEACHER has just repeated for someone else. Patience when the kids forget their lunch money for the fourth day in a row. Patience when one-third of the class fails the test. Patience when the text books haven’t arrived yet, and the semester starts tomorrow.

And God gave the TEACHER a heart slightly bigger than the average human heart. For the TEACHER’s heart had to be big enough to love the kid who screams, "I hate this class-it’s boring!" and to love the kid who runs out of the classroom at the end of the period without so much as a "goodbye," let alone a "thank you."

And lastly, God gave the TEACHER an abundant supply of Hope. For God knew that the TEACHER would always be hoping. Hoping that the kids would someday learn how to spell…Hoping not to have lunchroom duty…Hoping that Friday would come…Hoping for a free day…. Hoping for deliverance.

When God finished creating the TEACHER, he stepped back and admired the work of his hands. And God saw that the TEACHER was good. Very Good!

And God smiled, for when he looked at the TEACHER, he saw into the future. He knew that the future is in the hands of the TEACHERS.

And because God loves Teachers so much, on the 9th day God created "Snow Days."

An Interview With God

I dreamt I had an interview with God. "Come in," God said. "So, you would like to interview Me?"

"If you have the time," I said.

God smiled and said: "My time is eternity and is enough to do everything; what questions do you have in mind to ask me?"

"What surprises you most about mankind?"
God answered:

"That they get bored of being children, are in a rush to grow up, and then long to be children again.
That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health.
That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live neither for the present nor the future.
That they live as if they will never die, and they die as if they had never lived…"

God’s hands took mine and we were silent for a while and then I asked…"As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?"
God replied with a smile:

"To learn that they cannot make anyone love them. What they can do is to let themselves be loved.
To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but who they have in their lives.
To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. All will be judged individually on their own merits, not as a group on a comparison basis!
To learn that a rich person is not the one who has the most, but is one who needs the least.
To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in persons we love, and that it takes many years to heal them.
To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness.
To learn that there are persons that love them dearly, but simply do not know how to express or show their feelings.
To learn that money can buy everything but not happiness.
To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it totally differently.
To learn that a true friend is someone who knows everything about them…and likes them anyway.
To learn that it is not always enough that they be forgiven by others, but that they have to forgive themselves."

I sat there for a while enjoying the moment. I thanked Him for his time and for all that He has done for me and my family, and He replied, "Anytime. I’m here 24 hours a day. All you have to do is ask for me, and I’ll answer."

Parable of the Golden Hearts

A long time ago, during the age of the Fathers of the Church, there is a story about St. Augustine. The story goes that the people of Hippo, Northern Africa, were very excited about building a beautiful church, and decorating their cathedral so that it would become an impressive place of worship.

They donated silk and brocades vestments to the church. They put silver chains on the lamps, and covered the walls with expensive wood. They wanted all the vessels for the altar to be made of gold. They wanted to have a truly beautiful church to honor God. St. Augustine said that was very nice, but there was something that was more important.

"Do not adorn the church and ignore your afflicted brother who is the most precious temple of all."

St. Augustine said, "I do not want golden dishes on the altar. I want a Golden Heart."

This a story about values... material and spiritual values.

A wonderful old woman told me one time: "When you get old, you begin to realize what are the really important things in life. They are not the things you can buy. They are the love of people around you. They are more important than everything else in the world. But it is sad sometimes, that we have to wait until we get old to realize that Golden Hearts are more important than Golden Dishes.

The Immaculate Conception

Mary is special and unique. Because of this, the Catholic Church has always honored Mother Mary in special ways. One of these special ways is the celebration of the feast of the Immaculate Conception every December 8. It is a holiday of obligation.

On February 11, 1858, Bernadette Soubirous, a fourteen year old French peasant girl went with her sister and a friend to gather sticks for firewood outside the town of Lourdes. As Bernadette stooped down to get sticks, she heard a noise like a gust of wind. She looked up and saw a beautiful lady dressed in white. The lady told Bernadette to go back to the same place every day.

"I am the Immaculate Conception", replied the beautiful Lady to Bernadette's question asking who she was.

After some time, Bernadette realized that the lady appearing to her was the Blessed Virgin Mary. At first, no one believed Bernadette. But, later, several people who prayed with great faith were cured at the place. A shrine was built, and it immediately become world-famous. Until now, it is still visited by thousands of people.

Today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her birth is surrounded with a mystery of holiness and is distinguished by unique privileges. Unlike other descendants of Adam and Eve, she is born without the original sin. She is pure, holy, beautiful and glorious. She is adorned with all the special graces for God had chosen her to be the Mother of Jesus.

We think about her who keeps helping all who love Jesus. We think of her being special and unique and we try to be special,too, in our own little way. We can be special to our parents,family, friends and even to people we do not know or who do not know us. We are called to share in these privileges through the presence of the Holy Spirit. Being more fully and truly "human" than we are, Mother Mary can appreciate our human trials and failures.

Gift-giving is the difficult aspect of Christmas. For a person who has many loved ones choosing the appropriate gift to suit the recipient's temperament and character is really a hard task. Another area of concern is the often limited finances of many givers.

1. Assess how much money you can set aside for Christmas gifts.

4. Think of the least fortunate in your surroundings. They need your gift of thoughtfulness and kindness in forms of basic needs like clothing, food, and opportunity to be self-reliant. Can you help even just one relative or neighbor to be employed in your office?

5. Give yourself a gift also-- a book, a ticket to a music concert or a stage play; a film you've wanted to see, a trip alone to the countryside, a dinner or lunch date with a special friend.

6. Try to give the best offering to God: Your talent-- that you will use it only according to His will, for His glory and the good of fellowmen; Your time-- that you shall find in your busiest hours to remember Him and thank Him for the wisdom, strength and the little miracles He sends your way. Make a sacrifice-- at a certain point in your life, you may want something or want to be someone that can never be; try giving them up, if you think such is His will. Strengthen your own will to put God above every thought, desire, need, person, fear, hope, want or craving you might have.

3. Never criticize without complimenting. No one likes to be told they are inadequate in their job. Criticize constructively, then praise at least one attribute.

5. When in the company of others never gossip or negate the ability or personality of another. If you can't say anything pleasant about someone, don't say anything.

6. Remember people's names. Pronounce the name correctly and always add the appropriate title such as: Mr., Mrs., Miss, Dr., Professor, Sir, etc. Titles make people feel important, use them.

7. When in conversation with others, don't hog the spotlight. A good conversationalist is popular, a good listener even more so. Talk if you have something to say, but listen and show interest in what others have to say.

10. In appreciating other's talents, be tolerant of those who do not measure up to your standards. No one is perfect.

1. What you eat today influences your health tomorrow. Eat nourishing foods. Stay away from fatty foods.

2. Do not eat when you are angry. Uncontrolled hostility at meal times turns food sour and brings ulcers and heart problems.

3. Tension and worry bring emotional and physical illnesses. Do some relaxing exercises, take brisk walks. Get your mind off your work, your problems.

4. Follow this advice: Placidity prevents acidity.

5. Rest is important but too much rest is harmful. Regulate sleep.

6. Loss of energy is due to boredom and laziness. Take on challenges, new interests. Find life and live life. Enjoy life.

7. Conserve energy. Give out a little at a time. Apply discipline and do every job with love and enthusiasm.

8. You can avoid physical illnesses by right thinking, right eating and right living. Avoid stress and strain. Think health, not sickness. Take charge of your mind and your mind will take charge of your body.

Life is not at all a rivalry that we need to hurt someone either physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. We do not need to hurt anybody to attain our goal. Life is working together to attain each other's goal.

Jesus Christ said:

" Do for others what you want them to do for you!" (Matthew 9:37)

All religious or philosophical movements in the world advocate the Golden Rule, and let me quote them in their own respective style:

"Regard your neighbor's gain as your own gain, and your neighbor's loss as your own loss." - Taoism

"Do not do unto others what you would not have them do unto you." - Confucianism

"No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother that which he desires for himself."- Islam

"Hurt no others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful."- Buddhism

"This is the sum of duty: Do not unto others that would cause you pain if done to you."- Brahmanism

"What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man."- Judaism

"The nature alone is good which refrains from doing unto another whatsoever is not good for itself."- Zoroastrianism

Why do you have to hurt someone? Will it profit you? Will it make you greater? Definitely not!

Paul, in his letter to the Colossians, said:

"...You must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you. And to all these qualities, add love, which binds all things together in perfect unity. " (Colossians 3:12)
