This June, local legends Torvill and Dean will skate with the Olympic torch in Nottingham in a special gala event at the National Ice Centre and everyone is welcome to apply for the specially issued tickets which will be FREE.

The event will take place on Thursday 28 June with Torvill and Dean taking to the ice in a one-of-a-kind performance of a choreographed dance with the Olympic flame.

The skating pair, who are currently in Nottingham for the Dancing on Ice Tour said, “We couldn’t be happier to be a part of the Olympic Torch Relay celebrations in our home town, we’ve been developing our choreography for the gala and we’re very excited to welcome the Olympic Flame to the National Ice Centre, where it all began for us.”

City schools can expect invitations to the event next week before tickets are made available to the public, and seating for the gala is unreserved, however people will need to register for a ticket. Registration will commence on May 18 and the tickets will be distributed on a first come basis.

Further details about the gala and the ticket application process will be released closer to the time at www.National-Ice-Centre.com

Nottingham's historic Arboretum celebrates its 160th anniversary this week.

To mark the event a day of free entertainment and activities takes place on Sunday May 13 from 11am to 3pm with demonstrations of woodland crafts and stalls selling local arts and crafts. Picture the Past, Nottinghamshire Archives and Nottinghamshire Local History Association will display old photos and local history, and the Friends of the Arboretum will be selling Arboretum postcards and letting people know what their group does.

The day opens with music from Carlton Brass, followed by Johnny and the Raindrops and Aistaguca. There will be traditional games, ‘fun’ bikes with the Big Wheel and Ridewise, a chance to listen to or help create poetry and watch artists at work. A guided tree tour introduces the Arboretum’s new specimens.

The Victorian Arboretum, Nottingham’s oldest public park, is the closest park to the city centre and home to an important collection of more than 830 trees of over 220 different species and varieties, some of which are from the original collection planted in the 19th century. It was opened on May 11, 1852 by the then Lord Mayor of Nottingham, in front of 30,000 people and at 12.15pm on Sunday the present Lord Mayor, Councillor Michael Wildgust, will commemorate that day and look back over the park’s history and preservation over the past 160 years.

The park is Grade 2 Listed in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens and has nine Grade II listed buildings and structures. It was designed as a botanical collection as well as a place for relaxation and tranquillity. In 2002, with the help of funding from the Heritage Lottery, Nottingham City Council carried out a major restoration of the Arboretum to restore its Victorian heritage, including restoration of the Bell Tower c.1862, the Bandstand c. 1881 and the Circular Aviary c.1892. This year 11 new trees have been added to the collection.

A new guided heritage walk around the Arboretum has been produced by the Friends of the Arboretum and Nottingham City Council for the 160th celebration and plans for the proposed café development will be on show on Sunday for visitors to give their views. Councillor Dave Trimble, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio holder for Leisure Culture and Tourism, said: “The Arboretum has a weatlh of history and stories. It is one of Nottingham’s finest parks and Sunday is a chance to celebrate all that has been achieved in recent years to preserve it at its best.”

It will be a day of activities and fun with the chance to take a guided tree tour to look at some of the Arboretum’s latest newest additions, take part in a mini tree talk, listen to stories of the Wild Man of the Woods and look out for the Victorian lady on stilts who is sometimes spotted gliding through the trees.”Demonstrations include pole lathe turning, hurdle making, willow weaving, and charcoal, coracle and mountain dulcimer making and a chainsaw artist making sculptures from some of the old wood in the park – all in all, something for everyone.”

GameCity is Europe’s biggest and best-loved videogame culture festival. And now it's back for the 7th year running. Experience a huge range of playful events in and around Nottingham from October 20th-27th 2012.

Experience a huge range of playful events in and around Nottingham from October 20th-27th 2012.

The festival is mostly free* to attend and there are loads of events suitable for all ages. It’s overflowing with fun, exciting, interesting things to do during the October half term. There’ll be a schedule of events for you to see really soon, plus lots of exciting news and surprise announcements to come over the next few months.

The plan is to look at videogames from a different perspective, and encourage everyone to do the same; to educate and ultimately inspire.

GameCity is about more than just playing games; more than a product sitting on a shelf. It’s the days, weeks, months and years invested in projects; the creativity and talent on show; the emotions, aspirations and inspirations that make videogames so much more than the sum of their parts; it’s about the journey.

It’s a unique exploration of what videogames really mean to the people who play them and the people who make them too.

Games aren’t just for playing. They’re for learning. And for teaching. And for inspiring. But most importantly, they’re for us. Every single one of us.

Organisers of the Nottingham Food and Drink Festival have announced a host of new ingredients, which are set to make this year’s event the most varied yet.

Now in its fourth year, the Festival is once again organised by We Are Nottingham, the Business Improvement District (BID) for licensed premises in the city centre, with the headline sponsor for 2012 being local low cost airline, bmibaby.

Running from Wednesday 4 July until Sunday 8 July, the centrepiece of the Festival, will be a local and regional food and drink market in Nottingham’s Market Square, with over 40 stalls. The market will also feature a new beer and wine sampling area, stocked with a wide selection of wines and locally produced real ales.

The demo theatre will make a welcome return, newly extended for 2012, and, once again, restaurants and bars across the city centre will be hosting a varied programme of events and masterclasses. With everything from sushi making to blind cocktail tasting, there will also be a host of special offers to tempt diners to sample the wide variety of cuisines that Nottingham has to offer.

Sylvia Oates, chief executive of We Are Nottingham, commented:

“We’re thrilled to be back for 2012 and to have bmibaby on board for a five-day celebration of Nottingham’s vibrant food and drink offering.

“The new beer and wine marquee is something that we’ve been looking at for a while and will be a showcase area for some of the finest wine producers and the region’s outstanding breweries and microbreweries.

“This year, we’ve made the decision to extend the demonstration area so that even more people can enjoy the demos and pick up some inspiration. We have some talented chefs in this city and this is all about showcasing their talents and making them the stars of the show.

“Last year’s event was our busiest yet, and with the new elements and varied programme, I’m confident that 2012 will be a record year for the bmibaby Nottingham Food and Drink Festival.”

bmibaby will have a stall at the Festival, offering people the chance to win flights from East Midlands Airport.

Julian Carr, managing director, bmibaby, said:

“As an East Midlands based airline it is great for us to get involved with the local community and we are really excited to be the sponsor of the bmibaby Nottingham Food and Drink Festival.

“Nottingham has a fantastic mix of food and drink venues and we are proud to support this platform for them to showcase their talent.”

Nada Budaya – meaning rhythm of culture – brings exquisite cuisine from culturally-diverse, dynamic Malaysia to Nottingham's food scene.

I’ve liked Malaysian food since I first went to the region many years ago, so when I heard last year that a Malaysian restaurant was to open in Nottingham, I couldn’t wait. But with one thing and another, it wasn’t until last night that I actually went. It’s not particularly well signposted – the signage for the pub upstairs being much more prominent than that for the restaurant downstairs.

Nada Budaya is beautifully designed with specially commissioned art and wooden carvings imported from Malaysia. The service was good, with the waitress brutally honest about which dishes to go for and which to avoid. Which was great, because all the food we ended up ordering on her recommendation was amazing (with possibly the best satay sauce with one of the starters).

With it being reasonably priced, we’ll definitely be going for more!
