Drove over in storm threatening skies to see the Floris UMC
first full length musical only because I had read in the Centreview Mike Cash
was playing the mayor. Loved Mr. Cash as the Scarecrow, Cogsworth, Grandpa Joe
and Wilbur Turnblad in previous Alliance
theatre productions and was not disappointed here. Actually saw quite a few TAT
actors and familiar faces from 11 other local theaters. The director, Barbara
Carpenter, used a well rounded adult cast to its full potential and polished
the teens and children as bright as pennies.

Floris UMC has one of the longest stages in the area,
allowing for seamless scene transitions from one side to the other. The set
design, dressing and props were rivaled only by the costumes. Everything was
top notch. The orchestra was a little loud for some of the younger voices to
sing over as they played the old, well known tunes to a happy, swaying, toe
tapping audience.

Newlyweds Ward and Katie Ferguson as Harold Hill and Marion
Paroo, had us on the edge of our seats waiting to see what we knew would
happen. Mike Cash and Laura Kelmelis as tongue tied Mayor George Shin and his involved
wife Eulie had us laughing out loud. The squabbling School Board, Alex
Bhargava, Ron Kronz, Jim Edwards, Jim Daily, transformed into a charming barbershop
quartet right on key. John Totten was a wronged and righteously indignant
Charlie Cowell.

The large cast acted not only during monologues and snappy conversations
but also as they danced and sang, which is expected from a more established
theatre group. It was a pleasant surprise for so young a company. Great
choreography, staging, musical direction, hair and make up. It would take pages
to describe in detail how good the production was and neither you nor I have
time for that. So, I’ll only mention one more person.

Samuel Elliott played the shy, awkward Winthrop Paroo who
comes out of his shell when Prof. Harold Hill brings the promise of a boy’s
band to town. My theatre buddy, Cookie, is of the opinion this little boy stole
the show. I disagree. But I will say he stole my heart.

Sadie Jones

Recently ran into an acquaintance who, like me, saw the last
show of TAT’s summer production Legally Blonde. He jabbered about
how wonderful it was. Surprised at his enthusiasm I asked “what did you like about it?” He said “You know,
the girl who played Ellie and the one who played the hairdresser were
fantastic”. And, that about sums it up.

Taylin Frame was a brilliant not-so-dumb blonde Elle Woods.
Kathy Arnold was funny and endearing as Paulette the Hairdresser. Both of them
had the best voices in the show.

If my friend searched his memory he may have remarked Gray
O’Reilly warmed up to his role as Emmett Forrest by the second act. Warren
Huntington, played by David McVicar, was as shallow, callous and slick as he
could be, but had no chemistry with his northeast beauty Vivienne. And although
Michael Clendenin was the cold hearted, stereotypical lawyer as Professor
Callahan, I didn’t believe he had sexual harassed anyone. The only believable
and fun to watch couple was Kathy Arnold (Paulette) and Brian Johnson, (Kyle
the delivery guy). Those two could have stolen the show.

Amanda Mason who played Vivienne, was too young and too nice
personally to make us believe she was a conniving ice queen. Ms. Mason’s
singing added to our listening pleasure but she may have been better cast as a
Delta Nut.

And here is the big casting question, Why not cast more
people who can sing and dance if you are doing a musical? Unless previously
mentioned, the voices were unremarkable. The program said there were two chorographers
and a dance captain. The dancing consisted mainly of stomping and clapping plus
a simplistic Irish jig. In the vernacular of Aunt McFee, “If it was a horse I
would have shot it”.

The Wardrobe dept. started and ended with the main
characters. It was as if the cast searched their own closets for what they
thought was appropriate for each scene. TAT followed Broadway’s lead by leaving
the law school set in plain sight during the show while pushing out props and
min-sets. It was distracting on stage that size.

Ending on a positive note, the orchestra gets full marks.
They played gallantly behind the curtain in what must have been sweltering
conditions.

See you later,

Sadie

Had decided not to write about CFTC’s Into the Woods last week because it was the
last showing. Frequently I see shows on the last weekend, so haven’t shared
observations on a half a dozen venues this past spring and summer. I saw NovaShowbiz as a vehicle to comment on
shows people had a chance to buy tickets. My mind’s been changed.

City of Fairfax Theatre Company started in 2009 on a frayed
shoe string budget and no home to call its own. You know, the usual way to
start a theatre company. Still they managed to put on a couple of productions a
year, run a Youth Ensemble during the school year and a summer camp. Many of
the un-paid staff are FCPS teachers whose calling it is to bring out the best
in the next generation. As of August 1, CFTC has suspended operations, http://www.fairfaxcitytheatre.org/fairfaxcitytheatre.org/Home.html.

It’s a shame. Into the Woods was delightful. The set was beautifully
constructed with a live orchestra silhouetted behind a canopy of trees and
undergrowth. Offstage sounds and lighting was everything it should be. And the
voices were clear as bells. The production was not perfect, but well worth the
price of the ticket.

If anyone has the energy or assets to help these folks out,
the NoVa theater community would be the better for it.

See you later,

When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course of true love — proving that sometime destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise, and some good old-fashioned blackmail.

Stowaway Billy Crocker ( Colby Dezelick ) is out to win back true love Hope Harcourt ( Rachel Shirley ) from Lord Evelyn Oakleigh ( Joshua Ewalt ), with the help of singer-turned-evangelist Reno Sweeney ( Katelyn Reimer ), wanted gangster Moonface Martin ( Julian Sanchez ), and Moonface’s girlfriend Bonnie Letour ( Corinne Holland ). Along for the ride are a minister ( Jake Ehrlich ) and his shady converts ( Estella Massey, Olivia Witt ), a hapless captain ( Chaz Coffin ) and a harried purser ( Brandon Sanchez ). Peppering this hilariously bumpy ride are some of musical theatre’s most memorable standards, including “You’re the Top,” “Blow, Gabriel, Blow,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “I Get A Kick Out of You,” and “Anything Goes.”

The show features 56 actors ranging from grades 7 to 12 from more than 15 area schools. The cast also includes recent Class of 2012 graduates.

By Ashley Kinney

                Sex,
drugs, and rock n’ roll are just a few things to be found in Taking Flight
Theatre Company’s production of “Next to Normal.”

                “Next
to Normal” tells the story of Diana Goodman, a mother suffering from bipolar
disorder, and possibly more. As she tries
various “cures” and ways to cope with her illness, her family, and those
connected with it, fly in and out of focus. Everyone struggles, grasping towards a concept
of “normal” they can’t achieve. Brian
Yorkey’s rock lyrics emphasize this world turned on its head as we find out that
this is anything but the “perfect, loving family.”

                Taking
Flight’s production makes some unique choices in terms of the art
direction. A cartoonish house takes up
the majority of the stage. Light glows
through the various windows and mirrors in the house, creating some interesting
stage images. Having some characters
visible through a window on the top level of the house also contributes nicely
to the layers onstage. There is also the
use of a projector screen as Diana tries various medical combinations, slipping
further and further out of control. The
colorful images, reminiscent of the original Willy Wonka movie, add to the
disconcerting situation onstage.

                Unfortunately,
in the attempt to portray a fully furnished house on a small stage, the house
seems a bit overcrowded at times, causing the actors to block each other. There is a bed that remains onstage for the
whole show, and is only used in the opening number.

                The
show truly shines through the cast. All
six of the cast members can sing, most extremely well. The harmonies are, more often than not,
simply beautiful and strongly sung.
While over half of the cast is new to Taking Flight, all of them have
impressive theatrical resumes.

                Holly
McDade gives a strong performance as Diana, almost deceptively so. At times, one may wish for a varied
performance in terms of emotional range, but just have patience. As the circumstances in Diana’s life
drastically change, so does McDade’s performance. It’s not that she withholds her emotion; it’s
that she chooses her moments carefully. As the show goes on, she portrays not only the
depression from her frustrating circumstances, but an intensity and childlike innocence. This seems to leave the audience more and
more impressed.

                And
you’d have to have the emotional range of a rock not to love Claire O’Brien as
Diana’s daughter Natalie, and Michael Bigley as Natalie’s boyfriend Henry. O’Brien and Bigley team up with adorable
chemistry as the perfectionist who finally cracks and the lovable stoner who
just doesn’t give up. O’Brien gives an
extremely strong performance throughout, particularly vocally, and avoids the
easy trap of portraying Natalie as merely a whiny 16 year old. Bigley wins the audience and gains some
well-earned laughs during his song “Perfect For You”, hitting his awkwardly
comic moments perfectly.

                “Next
to Normal” is an intrinsically emotional show, but that only makes it more
difficult to perform. Taking Flight’s
company really works to make the audience feel the frustration Diana and her
family face as she relapses. One of the
main themes, which seems to be, “Perfect isn’t achievable,” may not leave the
audience warm and fuzzy inside, but it’s true.
Perfect isn’t achievable, but that’s okay. You can still survive, and you can still find
a way to eventually be happy.

                “Next
to Normal” plays for six more performances, on June 3rd,
8th, 9th, 10th, 15th, and 16th. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 pm,
Sunday performances are at 7 pm. They perform
in the Waddell Theater on the NOVA campus in Sterling. For more information, visit tftheatre.org.

Jazz and Pizzazz 26 at Chantilly High School
by Sadie Jones

This year’s Jazz & Pizzazz is a bittersweet extravaganza. The amazing choral director, Glenn Cockrell, whose vision and dedication made The Chantilly Jazz and Combo bands and the Touch of Class show choir what they are, retires in a few weeks. The show plays 5/23 - 5/26 so don't miss out.

The 40 plus piece Jazz and Combo bands are worth the price of the ticket as they set your toes tapping with hot jazz or mellow your mood with cool blues. Thirty (30) numbers from start to finish and the kids were just as fresh at the finish; as well, you’d expect kids to be. Except the musicians are far more polished, far more professional in demeanor and talent than what anyone should suppose from people who aren't yet old enough to vote. Amazing.

The Touch of Class show choir is, for those who don’t know, the type of choir the TV show “Glee” is about. This glee club was voted America’s Favorite Show Choir in 2011. The featured vocalists were as wonderful as expected, but the diva moments were a little surprising. Hopefully it was opening night nerves that caused one songstress to yank her partner into place while the lights were dim and glare at another partner for some unseen faux pax. The only other suggestion to make it more enjoyable for the audience is to rotate the lines so we aren’t seeing the same half dozen faces for most of the night or space the performers in group numbers so we can see the people in the back more clearly. The serious numbers such as “Fix You” (Wed/ Fri performances only) and the pure
fun “California Gurls” shows what range these young people are capable.

The wardrobe, scenery and lighting folks get full marks. The smoke machine did make the first few rows foggy for a couple of numbers, but they may have control of that now. The audience participation number is a hoot. Sit close to an aisle if you think you may want to get caught in a “Time Warp”.

You don’t have to be a parent or know a child in the Chantilly School pyramid to come down to see Jazz and Pizzazz. For $10 a seat, you can bring someone along for 2 hours of pure fun, stop for ice cream on the way home and have had a grand night for less than $30 combined.

See you later,
Sadie

When asked to review Castaways Repertory Theatre’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof”, I couldn’t say no. My father has commented throughout my life that he sometimes feels like Tevye, “blessed” with four daughters and no sons. It seemed only natural that I had grown up with the film of this show. Simply saying “Fiddler on the Roof” made the fiddle intro start playing in my head, and the imaginary Tevye that lives there walked out front and center of my brain and began “A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, no?” I eagerly found my seat. Some ladies behind me were discussing what the show was going to be about, clearly new to the show, and they were terribly mispronouncing Anatevka. This made me smile, because I love the thought that people were being exposed to “Fiddler” for the first time. As for me, I was going home to Anatevka.
Anatevka wasn’t exactly the way I remembered it, but it was still home. The minimal set made it seem somehow smaller and less defined, and some of the brighter costumes seemed out of place for a poor town, but the important elements of Anatevka were still there. We still have the bottle dance at Tzeitel and Motel’s wedding, Yente is still arranging the matches (because, “Young people can’t decide these things for themselves, you know.”) and, most importantly, Tevye still wrestles with God over tolerance versus tradition. It is this theme of tolerance versus tradition which makes “Fiddler” relevant today. Our debates may not be over prayer shawls and men and women dancing together, but we still seem to struggle with how far we can deviate from past tradition.
<span style="background-color: transparent; style="white-space: pre;"> “Fiddler on the Roof” is a very demanding show for the man playing Tevye. Not only does he have the important job of narrator, and he has the most lines in the show, it falls to him to make sure that the audience understands just why the traditions of Anatevka are so important. Jim Mitchell, a clearly seasoned performer with the resume to prove it, takes this responsibility with gusto. He has the “Tevye eyes”, the incredulous and comic look as he is forced to accept that the world is changing, and some of his traditions may need adjusting. Mitchell clearly relishes his comic moments, and his excellent projection and strong singing voice makes sure that the audience doesn’t miss a word he says. My one regret was that this Tevye failed to do the traditional “Tevye shimmy” made famous by Zero Mostel during “If I Were a Rich Man.”
A standout performance is also given by Rebeca King as Hodel, Tevye’s second eldest daughter. She delivers her somewhat sassy lines without becoming shrewish, has a natural stage presence, and gives a truly beautiful performance of “Far From the Home I Love.” Clearly King’s time as a private vocal instructor has been well spent.
What is different about this version of “Fiddler on the Roof” is the audience interaction. When Tevye gives his opening monologue, he delivers it while walking down the aisle, gesturing and speaking directly to the audience. During the Sabbath prayer, Tevye and his family directly face the audience while the ensemble sings from the aisles. This type of direction strives to make the audience feel like they too have grown up in Anatevka, so they should share in their celebrations and tragedies. I believe this is why the audience so easily clapped along at Tzeitel and Motel’s wedding. It was a very welcome deviation from my expectations.
What CRT’s production may lack in budget, it makes up for with the heart of its cast. Many of the actors were clearly thrilled to be onstage, and you couldn’t help but smile at their enthusiasm. The cast clearly enjoys the show, and the audience can’t help but reciprocate.
Darrell Poe

Greetings NoVA Showbiz Readers! I'm so excited to put this post up - and just so there's no illusion of objectivity - let me be clear. I directed this show. I'm now friends with most of the cast.

I am in no way being objective when I recommend that you go to see this show. I care deeply about the work that has been done to produce this show, and want very much for audiences to see it.

Having said that - I wouldn't be making such a strong recommendation if I didn't believe 1000% that it will be money and time well spent for anyone who sees it.

This is my first turn at the helm, and it is work that I couldn't be more proud of. The cast and crew have poured their hearts and souls into this story, and I just can't say enough about how amazing they've all been to work with.

Make no mistake. They will absolutely blow you away.

review by: Darrell Poe

Director Bob Smith - a self proclaimed Shakespeare fanatic - takes the helm of this, Vpstart Crow's latest production, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Smith's love of Shakespeare is evident in this rendition - set modern day, but using an unedited (I dare say uncut) script. The first act is 90... (yes 90) minutes, followed by a brief intermission, and a 40 minute second act. Fret not - to this reviewer, overall it was 145 minutes well spent.

Aesthetically, the show excels - smartly dressed players, and a clean, simple set leave little to distract you as the story unfolds. The entire show is set inside the fictional establishment - Windosr Coffee, which consists of a leather couch, a small table and two chairs. My only complaint regarding the set was a poorly painted coffee bar. I would have preferred to see a solid color - as it was the bar looked unfinished. Nonetheless - there is no question when you enter the theater that you're looking at a coffee shop in. Above the bar is a large flat screen monitor upon which is the menu for Windsor Coffee.

Fresh off his portrayal of Glen Gulia in PWLT's rousing success - The Wedding Singer - Jay Tilley takes on another stand up guy in the role of Sir John Falstaff - the portly slime ball who plots to cuckold the husbands of Windsor by wooing their merry wives. Tilley's mastery of the language, and energy in the role make his character very fun to watch. Local favorite Aimee Snow plays the confident, counter-plotting Mistress Page, who (along with her compatriot, Mistress Ford - played by newcomer Kecia Campbell) seek to bring ruin and sheer embarrassment onto the scheming Falstaff. Hilarity, of course, ensues.

Snow and Campbell own their roles, aptly bringing to life the modern day setting with some polished non-verbal acting, and impeccable comedic timing. Also of note is the physical timing of Timothy R. King - who plays Mr. Ford. On more than one occasion King takes Mr. Ford floundering about the stage a la Jim Carrey - much to the delight of the sizable audience in attendance.

The ensemble is largely passable with stand-out performances by Sara Joy Lebowitz as Mistress Quickly, and Jack Powers as Slendor, the would be wooer and ultimate buffoon. Powers portrayal of Slendor brought to mind Brad Pitt's performance in "Burn After Reading", while Lebowitz's grasp of the language helps keep the audience clued into the various plots and schemes taking place.

Another device attempting to keep the audience engaged throughout; Windspace - a fictional social network in the town of Windsor, frequented by all of the major players. Throughout the show, their status updates can be seen scrolling onto the monitor above the coffee house in the style of Facebook or Twitter. A fantastic idea if fully executed - this effort came off as amusing at first, but ultimately forgettable. I would've liked to see more done here. It's clear a lot of effort was put into the creation of the visuals, but the execution was - much like the coffee bar it resided over - unfinished.

All in all - for the avid Shakespeare fan, Merry Wives is a no-brainer. Paired with a casual dinner, this show makes for a perfect evening out.
<![endif]-->
October 17, 2010 - By Sheila R. Lamb

Can something be horrific and phenomenal at the same time? The Prince William Little Theatre’s production of Victor Gialanella’s Frankenstein is just that: a chilling presentation, just in time for Halloween, which captures the audience with its rendition of Mary Shelley’s macabre story. Directed by Don Peterson and produced by Dave Warner, PWLT riveted the audience in the Gregory Family Theater at the Hylton Performing Arts Center.

Jay Tilley stars as Victor Frankenstein, the scientist who believes he can create a man using a corpse and volts of electricity. Tilley opens the performance with a soliloquy, excerpts from Frankenstein’s journal, from the upper balcony of the theatre. This solemn piece sets the tone for the terrible events that are to come. Tilley depicts Frankenstein’s obsession impeccably as he hides his work from his family and his trusting fiancée Elizabeth, expertly played by Christine Lange. Mike Rudden plays Henry Clerval, Frankenstein’s friend from university, who easily melds into the family dynamic. He earns praise for his natural portrayal of Clerval.

Michael Feidt is stunning in his role of the Creature. He resembles a wild animal as he hides in fright from Frankenstein and Clerval, then strikes out when they come too close. Feidt adeptly shows the Creature’s humanity and eagerness to learn in his scenes with DeLacey (Dell Pendergrast). The audience feels compassion as the Creature struggles with his new life, and not understanding his own strength.

Perhaps one of the most mesmerizing scenes is between the Creature and young William (Nathan Yannarell). Tension fills the stage as the Creature’s actions shift between disturbing and tender, as he helps the boy search for his missing dog. William touches the Creature’s face and states “Your face, it’s ugly,” and shows his open trust by saying “I like you.” Feidt’s split between innocence and realization is palpable as the Creature attempts to comprehend the word “dead.” His performance is heartrending. Feidt entices the audience to sympathize his obvious torment while knowing the Creature’s actions are reprehensible.

Expertly designed set, lighting, sound and other special effects complete the spellbinding performance in the Gregory Family Theater. Frankenstein’s laboratory is intricately designed and includes detailed lighting and sound, particularly for scenes with electrical voltage. Set changes are smooth while Mr. Peterson uses the balconies to the plays advantage, directing actors on both levels of the stage. Julie Cameron, makeup design, deserves recognition for her work on the Creature. His scarred head, chest and blackened eyes amplified his believable, terrifying portrayal.

Frankenstein is playing at the Gregory Family Theatre at the Hylton Performing Arts Center at the GMU campus in Manassas on October 15, 16, 22 and 23 at 8 PM (Fridays and Saturdays) and Saturdays and Sundays October 16, 17, 23, 24 at 2 PM. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students, seniors and groups of 10 or more. Lamb

The Theater Works VA performance of The Wizard of Oz debuted Friday night to an enthusiastic audience at the Cramer Center in Manassas. Based on the classic movie, Kye-Won Kopo directs this multi-aged cast for a family-friendly show, filled with spectacular set designs, costumes, and rousing musical acts.

Haley Jessup plays the quintessential Dorothy and captures the character flawlessly. She makes her entrance down the center aisle of the theater, complete with checkered dress and basket. This is an effective way to add audience interaction in the first scene, as Dorothy searches for her ever-escaping dog, Toto.
(Toto, by the way, is played by a toy stuffed animal terrier. His lively entrances onstage, with the help of cast and crew, add levity and humor to the show. The audience loves Toto!)

Darren Brydie, Austin Cooke, and Journey Pforte portray the farmhands who will eventually become the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion, respectively. There is excellent working chemistry between the three and they are able to play off of each other successfully. Cooke delivers his lines succinctly and garners audience sympathy at the end when his “heart is breaking,” while Pforte fits perfectly into his role as the dramatic lion. Brydie earns kudos due to his physical acting in his many swoops, tumbles, and drops as the Scarecrow tries to walk.

Of course, Oz would not be complete without the Wicked Witch of the West. Katy Chmura portrays Mrs. Gultch with a touch of comedy (referring to her broken basket clasp bought on Ebay) and then turns into the scary witch, who cackles over her evil plots in her castle. The witch’s castle is one of the most elaborate set designs on the stage. Dry ice adds special effects to her brewing cauldron, and mysterious skulls and other props fill out the wicked witch’s lair. The sets are changed between each scene.

Though the matinee performances are a children’s only cast, youngsters also play crucial roles in the evening adult cast productions. The Munchkins and Jitterbugs add animated song and dance acts, lighting up the stage with their colorful costumes. The scenes with Chmura and children’s cast of flying monkeys, Poppies and Winkies epitomize the mentorship philosophy behind Theater Works VA in this evening adult cast production.

Kopko gives the audience a warm welcome and explains the unique aspects of this production. In addition to being an artistic endeavor, it is also educational. According to Kopko, adults mentor the children in acting techniques, such as characters and timing. Previously, she has only worked with children’s groups and this is her first adult production – a job well done.

The Wizard of Oz is playing for two weekends at The Cramer Center in Old Town Manassas.

The Cramer Center

9008 Center Street,

Manassas, VA.

Tickets are available at The Cramer Center Box Office, or in advance at www.boxofficetickets.com.

Prices:

$10 Adults, $7 Students - in advance

$12 Adults, $8 Students - at the door

Evening performances (Adult cast) are Fridays and Saturdays at 7PM

Matinée performances (Youth cast) are Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 3PM.

To learn more about TheaterWorks VA check out their website: http://www.theaterworksva.com.

For more info on NoVA Showbiz, or if you'd like us to review your show - please be sure to email novashowbiz@gmail.com.

A New Twist Behind The Curtain: TheaterWorks VA Presents The Wizard of Oz

October 11, 2010 ~by Darrell Poe

TheaterWorksVA is bringing an old family favorite to The Cramer Center this week. Opening Friday evening at 7PM - The Wizard of Oz is a story we all know, but this little company has put an interesting new spin on things.

It's not often that a theater company comes along and takes a risk with a new idea. For what it's worth, I admire TheaterWorks VA for taking on that risk, and I hope they're rewarded with a successful run - we'll be in attendance on Friday.

So here's the twist.

Each role in the show has been double cast - one adult actor and one youth actor.

Yes - you read that correctly.

The adult actors are tasked not only with learning and perfecting their own respective roles, but also with mentoring the youth actors on theirs. The adults will perform the evening shows, and the children will perform the matinées.

The potential for learning and improvement for young actors is immense - there is clearly much to be gained by an arrangement like this. Kudos to Denise and the other hard working folks at TheaterWorks VA for making this project happen.

That said - a few questions come to mind.

This new take on theater education is a wonderful idea, but we have yet to see if it will pay off for audiences. Will mentoring the younger actors take away from the adult's performances? The director plays a key role in any good theater production - acting as the single guiding voice throughout the rehearsal process. Will that voice be diluted with actors directing other actors?

As a theater nerd, and patron - things like this occur to me before I see a show. But, before seeing any show, ALL theater patrons have to ask themselves - do I want to see this show?

With this new twist, comes more questions: If I do want to see this show, which show do I see? The adults or the children? Shouldn't I see Both to really get the full experience? Do I really want to see this show twice? Does it become simpler to just pick another show in the area to go see? There's certainly no shortage of options.

Big risk. Lots of questions.

You'll have to answer all of them for yourself, but from a budgetary standpoint TWV's The Wizard of Oz is actually pretty low-risk - ticket prices are very reasonable. There's no word on any discount rate to see both the Adult and Youth shows, but at $10 for general admission in advance - buying a ticket to both is not out of the question.

While a significant risk is being taken here - that's for certain- the pay-off could be huge. If this show is successful, TheaterWorks VA will have brought a truly meaningful innovation to children's theater, potentially changing the way theater education is approached.

Either way - they are certainly a company to watch, and and should be commended for pushing the boundaries and taking big chances. My hat's off to them.

The Wizard of Oz is playing for two weekends at The Cramer Center in Old Town Manassas.

The Cramer Center

9008 Center Street,

Manassas, VA.

Tickets are available at The Cramer Center Box Office, or in advance at www.boxofficetickets.com.

<span class="Apple-style-span" Lamb

The Miracle Worker, performed by Castaways Repertory Theatre, highlights Annie Sullivan’s early experiences with the recalcitrant Helen Keller. Katherine Biscula directs this moving adaptation of William Gibson’s play. As Helen struggles to emerge from her cocoon of isolation, Annie endeavors to break free from her haunting past.

Not enough can be said about Rebecca Hausman’s poignant portrayal of Helen. From the beginning Hausman aptly depicts Helen’s loneliness as a blind and deaf child through tactile expression and movement. Hausman uses the tactile to it's fullest – she grabs, clutches, and clings to her family, almost to the point of injury. She is constantly reaching out with her hands, symbolizing to the audience not only Helen’s need to learn her way around the house but also her efforts to reach out to those around her. The audience is immediately drawn into Helen’s world, and understands she is trying to use touch to communicate.

Alexia Poe exemplifies Sullivan, a new teacher determined to overcome her trepidation with sharp edged, smartly delivered retorts, particularly in her interactions with the formidable Captain Keller (Scott Olson). These scenes bring more than several laughs from the audience. Her more somber moments are revealed through flashbacks from her childhood. Heather Biscula and Collin Chandler play a young Annie and her brother. A sepulchral doctor appears to tell the audience of the Sullivan’s sad fate in ominously delivered lines.

Together, Poe and Hausman use the physical to expertly create tension-filled scenes, interspersed with humor. In one of her first tasks, Sullivan (think Super Nanny) strives to teach Helen proper manners at the dinner table. Helen throws her spoon from the table numerous times, each toss accompanied by well-delivered facial expressions that capture Helen’s belief that she has bested Sullivan, in a “gotcha” moment. As they fight – Sullivan’s attempt to wrestle Helen into compliance - Poe and Hausman again use the physical to its fullest advantage onstage. Helen’s parents, along with her sarcastic half-brother, Jimmy (Stephen Keane), have the complex task of loving Helen and being frustrated by her. Colleen Close, as Kate Keller, does a stunning job of illustrating the bond between mother and child – no matter how difficult the child. Jimmy’s wit adds levity to several scenes where the family is at a loss over how to quell Helen’s disobedience.

The minimalist scenery gives the actors full utilization of the stage. A simple bedroom and dining room make up most of the set, along with the significant water pump off to the side. There are a few moments when some of the actor’s backs are to the audience, particularly at the dining table. Biscula fixes this by making the most of the power struggle of using a napkin at dinner between Sullivan and Helen. The napkin takes center stage.

The actors improvise various scenes, such as in Sullivan’s flashbacks or in the garden house. Poe and Hausman need few props to interpret Sullivan’s valiant determination to teach Helen and open the world to her.

Performances of The Miracle Worker begin October 8, 2010 at 8pm, and continue Friday and Saturday evenings through October 23rd.
Young Victor Frankenstein has everything going for him: a loving family, a genteel and adoring fiance, and a privileged life at the family estate in Europe. Then his ill-fated miscalculation of the power of science and arrogance lead to a creation so horrible and unimaginable that nothing and no one he loves will escape unscathed. Adapted for the stage by Victor Gialanella, this dark play steers clear of the modern stereotypes of one of literature's most infamous "monsters" and will leave you haunted and amazed.

The show is directed by Don Petersen, produced by Dave Warner and features local actors Jay Tilley, Michael Feidt, Jr., Christine Lange, Erin Gallalee, Sam Repshas, Mike Rudden, Susy Moorstein, Bob Rosenberg, Dell Pendergrast, Dan Bellotte, Rocky Jackson and Nathan Yannarell. This gothic tale will be performed in the Gregory Family Theatre at the Hylton Performing Arts Center at the GMU campus in Manassas on October 15, 16, 22 and 23 at 8 PM (Fridays and Saturdays) and Saturdays and Sundays October 16, 17, 23, 24 at 2 PM. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students, seniors and groups of 10 or more. The relatively new play makes its DC area debut with this production, but has already enjoyed success in New York. In addition, it will soon travel to Hollywood to become a motion picture, directed by George Clooney.

The story centers around Stephen (Adam Downs), a bright, young press secretary during a presidential primary. Stephen thinks he is a master of the spin game, only to realize how quickly the game can turn on you. Downs gives a very natural and earnest performance. He makes Stephen likable even as you watch him question his morals and loyalties.

Other notable performances are given by Cal Whitehurst who plays Tom Duffy, the crooked campaign manager for the competing primary candidate, and Shelagh Roberts who plays Ida, a New York Times reporter. Roberts certainly had that obnoxious New Yorker down to a T.

The cast is also joined by a series of guest appearances by local politicians playing the bartender. A different guest joins each performance including Tom Davis, Mike Gravel, Frank Fannon, Lonnie Rich, Bill Euille, and Jim Moran.

The minimalistic set, designed by Robin Parker, was able to seamlessly transform from scene to scene and lent itself well to some interesting staging. Often a set piece from the previous scene was integrated into the next and served a completely different function than it had before. For instance a piece used as a bar then doubled as a headboard in a hotel room. Although creative, the set as a whole looked somewhat barren due to the use of only furniture and no background pieces.

The sound design by David Correia was also sometimes questionable. Sound cues underscored some scene changes and were not always effective in setting the mood of the next scene. CNN sound bites were appropriate, but hearing commercials for stores like Kohl’s included in those sound bites often drew you out of the performance. However, the choice of several patriotically themed songs helped bring you back.

Eddie Page, the show’s director has directed and assistant directed at other companies locally, but makes his Port City Playhouse debut with this production. Overall he put up a fine show and one that the political junkies of the DC Metro area are sure to enjoy.

Farragut North runs for one more weekend at the Lee Center for the Performing Arts, 1108 Jefferson Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. For complete details be sure to check out Port City's website - www.portcityplayhouse.com.

Set in the days leading up to a presidential primary caucus in Iowa, Farragut North centers on Stephen Bellamy, a smart young press secretary for a presidential candidate, whose internal conflict between ambition and loyalty has serious consequences. Beau Willimon’s fast-paced drama takes a behind-the-scenes look at high-stakes political campaigns and the pressures faced by the people involved. Director Eddie Page has assembled a great cast, with Adam Downs as Stephen, Dan Beck, Bill Byrnes, Erik Harrison, Shelagh Roberts, Tabitha Rymal, Isidora Sasser and Cal Whitehurst supporting.

In keeping with the play’s political theme, Page lined up various political figures to make cameo appearances during performances of Farragut North. Some have already occurred, however the schedule for remaining guest appearances is as follows:

- September 24 - Alexandria City Councilman Frank Fannon
- September 25 - Former Alexandria City Councilman Lonnie Rich
- October 1 - Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille
- October 3 - Virginia 8th District Rep. Jim Moran (tentatively confirmed)

Port City Playhouse will follow Farragut North with three more shows this season – Rashomon by Faye and Michael Kanin, an adaption of the classical Japanese story of a crime as seen from the differing perspectives of the people who were there; No Niggers No Jews, No Dogs, John Redwood’s provocative look at prejudice and understanding in the 1940s American South; and Anthony Horowitz’s Mindgame, a thrilling duel of wits between a writer of mystery novels and a serial killer.

Since its founding in 1977, Port City Playhouse has regularly received awards from area theatre organizations for the artistic and technical excellence of its productions, earning the prestigious 2005-06 Ruby Griffith Award for All Round Production Excellence for Hauptmann.
You think you can act? Or sing? Or dance? Well...

September 23, 2010 by Darrell Poe

Carlos Roman wants to find out if you've really got what it takes to entertain. The award winning film maker is hosting regular talent showcases at The Majestic Night Club in Falls Church, VA and if you haven't been out to see one - you're missing quite an experience. Roman, along with a panel of judges (local casting directors, producers, actors, etc.) give contestants a chance to show off their talents, be they acting, singing, or dancing (or in some cases, none of the above...). The panel offers constructive and thoughtful feedback, along with a shot at cash prizes and potential work on future Roman Pictures projects. Be sure to check out www.sytyca.com for full details.

Don't have any aspirations for the stage, screen, or studio? No worries - you can still have a great time watching with friends. Far from the glitz and glamor of a Hollywood movie set, you'll get a true glimpse into what producing independent film/TV is really like. I've seen first hand some of the talent that turns up at these competitions - they're not all great, but there are some real scorchers. After performing a prepared piece, actors are thrown into live improvisational situations with other actors from the RP team, while singers and dancers who gain the judges approval are challenged to reach outside their comfort zone in a second qualifying round. Between performances the Roman Pictures crew works hard to keep everyone entertained, and the traditional South American fare featured at The Majestic is quite good.

The entire show is filmed in HD with a 3 camera TV style set-up. Nothing is hidden from the live audience - it really is a cool experience. If you've never been on a live set before, this is arguably the most accessible way in town to see exactly how the magic happens. Episodes will begin airing online later this year so be sure to stay tuned. Online viewers will have their chance to take part in the competition by voting for their favorite performers, with online votes ultimately deciding the winner from each category.

The proceedings are hosted by Kevin Troy and Gary McDaniel, along with Amanda Wright and Arianne Smith to oversee the youth portion of the contests. You can find Roman Pictures, and their various projects on Facebook. They've posted several So You Think You Can Act teasers on YouTube - be sure to check them out, and for the latest info stay tuned to www.sytyca.com.

Vpstart does Hamlet well.

Hamlet plays through 9/26 in Manassas, VA

September 21, 2010 - Darrell Poe

For their debut production in the beautiful new Hylton Performing Arts Center, located on George Mason University’s Prince William campus, local theater company Vpstart Crow tackles one of literature’s greatest tragedies – William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The tale of the young Danish Prince is told in a modern setting – think Hamlet meets The Sopranos with a side of Jersey Shore.

The Gregory Family Theater makes a great first impression, and Rob Batarla’s clean, modern set fits well within it. Without a doubt, this is one of Vpstart Crow’s best productions in recent years – a fitting house warming to welcome us to their new home. The acting talent is some of the best I’ve seen locally – a few new faces and several veterans of the local stage.

Matthew Marcus takes on the well worn role of Hamlet, following in the footsteps of Sir Laurence Olivier, Mel Gibson, and Kenneth Branagh – among thousands. Certainly no easy task, but one Marcus has clearly approached thoughtfully, and performed compellingly. He commands your attention whenever he’s on stage, pulls you along on his mad journey to vengeance, and ultimately, to Hamlet’s own tragic demise. His direct address is engaging, and his interaction on stage with the well rounded ensemble is natural and believable at every turn. In equal turns humorous and serious, heartwarming and heartbreaking.

Bethany Goodell steps confidently and competently into the role of Ophelia – both the object of Hamlet’s affections, and the unwitting victim of his hubris. In typical Shakespearean fashion Ophelia’s father, Polonius (smartly played by new comer Kevin Walker) is accidentally killed by Hamlet – although the circumstances are questionable at best. When Ophelia learns of her father’s death she is driven past the brink of sanity, and Goodell’s portrayal of this turn is absolutely riveting. Her performance strides confidently along the precipice of credible emotion – it’s a huge bet, and it pays off.

Donning the role of Laertes, Ophelia’s protective brother, is Vpstart veteran and local talent - James Majewski. Majewski brings a surprising blend of swagger and reverence to Laertes in the early scenes. While I question some of the blocking, Majewski personifies gripping, palpable, authentic rage in the funeral scene. A bit disturbing? Yes - but unquestionably compelling, and entertaining to watch.

The fencing duel is a fine bit of fight choreography, capably handled by Marcus and Majewski, and credibly incorporated into the modern setting.

Batarla’s sound design, however, leaves a great deal (or a great deal less) to be desired. Accompanying the actor’s at various points throughout is a somewhat distracting and uneven underscore. At times tolerable, but more often I felt it robbed the actor’s of their opportunity to transport the audience. In an early scene between Ophelia and Laertes, I found myself removed from the scene by the low-quality, midi-composed score. It’s dissonance with the apparent production value of the play, and the considerable talent of the cast is actually somewhat baffling.

The supporting cast all play their parts well with delightful subtleties that weave a rich backdrop for the tragedy that unfolds. Not once was I taken out of the experience by an actor’s delivery – no mean feat for a local theater company producing Hamlet in the shadow of The Washington Shakespeare Company.

All in all, I give a resounding “Bravo!” to Vpstart Crow, director Rob Batarla, and his very talented cast.
