Yes, it is Valentine’s Day; NO I do not have some romantic date. I can never celebrate this day for what it is supposed to be. I have grown to hate this day and not because I am single, I am happy being single, I’m not the relationship type. James actually asked me out and I turned him down, I can’t be happy today, I can’t put a smile on my face and pretend everything is okay. I don’t even know if I should write it down, but on this day I always feel compelled to relive what happened. Although doing that, again, and again, year after year certainly doesn’t help me move on, which I know is what she would want me to do…

5 years ago today my best friend Mia was abducted right in front of me. It was late and we were walking home together. A van pulled up next to us, two men with masks jumped out and grabbed her. They tried to grab me too but I ran, leaving her with them. Her body was found 3 days later, raped, tortured and beaten. I can never forgive myself for running away, I may have saved my own life, but I lost my best friend. Maybe if I had tried to fight them off I could have saved her or at least died trying.

That’s why I stopped writing for those 5 years and I dropped out of college. I couldn’t be there anymore; I could barely even function for a while. I couldn’t deal with the way everyone looked at me with such pity; they all knew what had happened…

Last night is such a blur, I remember going to work and it got really busy as it typically does on a Saturday night, then it gets fuzzy. You would think I had been drinking but I know I wasn’t, I would never drink at work and I’m not much of a drinker anyway. I must be tired; I have been having some crazy dreams lately. Maybe I should start a dream diary too.

This guy at work keeps flirting with me, his name is James he is totally cute, so I flirt back a little, flirting is fun and harmless. I have no desire to date him, first off we work together and that could get ugly and second, I am not looking to date anyone. Besides, he probably just wants to get in my pants; he doesn’t seem like the commitment type.

I actually like working at the bar, it’s a lot of fun. My coworkers are really nice, and the customers are fairly laid back. I get hit-on all the time, which I will admit I like, it is kind of an ego boost which I sort of need right now. I’ve been a little down in the dumps lately; I guess I can’t help it this time of year, no matter how hard I try the sadness always creeps in. I can’t help it, I miss her.

I got fired from my job today; they said my tardiness has become an issue. I don’t know what has been going on with me lately, everything seems to be going wrong. I used to always be on time or early for work, then the last few weeks things keep happening to make me late.

Luckily the bar down the street is looking for a bar tender and they hired me on the spot, they said I will make great tips especially if I show some skin… There are certain advantages to being female, I start work tomorrow.

Do you ever wish magical creatures existed just so you would have "something" to blame when unusual things happen that make you feel like you’re losing your mind?

I spent an hour looking for my keys this morning.... It doesn't make a bit of since; I ALWAYS put my keys in the dish, on the end table by the front door. Yet when I went to leave the house for work (which I was already running late because for whatever reason my alarm didn't go off), my keys were NOT there.

I finally found my keys under the couch in my living room. How in the world could that have happened?
The only, somewhat reasonable, explanation I can think of is that my cat swiped up my keys out of the dish with her paw, dropped them on the floor and batted them under the couch. Even that sounds ridiculous; she is a very lazy cat. Although who knows what she does while I am asleep at night.

My alarm not going off doesn't make since either. I know it was on when I went to sleep, but not when I woke up 20 minutes late. I was totally dragging this morning despite going to bed early. NOTHING makes since. Maybe my cat also stepped on the buttons on my alarm clock and turned it off...

If fairies existed, I could simply blame it all on them instead of having to think up outlandish explanations, (involving my cat) in order to convince myself I'm not losing my mind...

Dear Diary,

I’m not really sure if I can do this again or not, start writing again… It’s been 5 years since I have kept a diary and after everything that has happened I don’t know where to begin. I like to address my entries to “Dear Diary” so I can feel as though I am talking to someone, writing a letter perhaps, to a close friend. Today is my birthday, I am 24. I’m not ready to write down why it’s been so long since I have written, but it is a new year, and with everything happening lately I finally think I need to whether I am really ready or not.

Dearest Diary,

Beginning my entries that way seems so ridiculous to me now, but it’s symbolic to me after all these years. I have to at least begin my first entry that way, it is part of the tradition after all; New Year, new diary. Even if last year’s still has room left. I like to start fresh. I was given my first diary on my 12^th birthday January 1, 1989. I am 19 today!!! Happy New Year! I am home from college on winter break; I go back in a few days. It is great, I have made a lot of friends, and I may even have a boyfriend!!! I’ll tell you more about that later! For 7 years now I have always kept a diary, documenting my thoughts, my relationships, my fears and my life! Mom’s calling, time for cake!

It all started simple enough; I would misplace things, forget things, I was tired ALL the time, the nightmares didn’t help. I figured I was just working too hard, I was stressed, or maybe I was coming down with something. I made excuses, until nothing made since anymore…

Do you know that feeling when you wake up in a hotel room and for a brief moment you do not remember where you are? What if that moment didn’t end? It happened to me and the moment became a full blown panic attack.

Yesterday morning I woke up in a hotel room with blood on my shirt, in my hair, under my nails. I have no memory of how I got to the hotel room or where the blood came from. I wasn’t injured, and it didn’t seem to be my blood, but I was alone in the room and there wasn’t blood on anything but me, so whose blood was it?

Reading w/ my daughter "A Series of Unfortunate Events"

I read this series of 13 books, a few years ago and thought it would be an intriguing series to read with my daughter who is 8, I read, she listens.
If you are not familiar with the series, the title "A Series of Unfortunate Events" fits it perfectly, three children are put through a lot of crazy horrible circumstances but it is written in a humorous way. Situations that in all reality would be sad and depressing don't come off that way in the books. The author constantly writes, "this book is unpleasant, don't read it, put it down, read something happy", haha!

We recently finished the first book in the series:
A Series of Unfortunate Events #1: The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket
My daughter enjoyed the book and was always eager to find out what would happen next!

It is about 3 children, Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire who become orphans when their parents die in a fire. They are put in the care of the villain of the series Count Olaf. The Baudelaire's parents were wealthy and Olaf is out to get the inheritance left to the children.

We just started the next book in the series: The Reptile Room

There was a movie made in 2004 titled Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Jim Carrey was the villain Count Olaf! The movie covered events from the first 3 books. I told my daughter we had to read those books before I would let her watch the movie.
