I Bet Nobody Thought To Update The Event Planner

Whisper gives me the keys to the seven-seater black SUV, and I head toward their garage with my heels in one hand because I’m not driving with those ankle-twisters on.

I drop my phone onto the passenger seat and start to reverse when I hear the ‘ping’ I knew was sure to come. I ignore it until I am outside the gates, and the second ‘ping’ hits my phone demanding attention.

“I haven’t got time for this, boys,” I mutter to the air filling the cabin.

My phone starts singing to me, and I know they won’t let up until I answer. I get it; it’s their job to question anything out of the scheduled day’s proceedings.

I pull over, place the phone in the holder and hit speaker, and start driving again.

“Phoenix, sweetheart, how are you doing this fine day for an expensive wedding?” Devil’s proper Londoner accent greets my ears. He doesn’t wait for me to answer. “Shouldn’t all you pretty fillies and one bride be on your merry way to Cuvier Park by now? Where would you be taking your pretty self at this time?”

“Hi, Devil, and thank you for reminding me we all have a wedding to attend,” I say with a dash of sarcasm. “I’m just running a quick errand over to Boxer’s house, and maybe raid Slade’s closet, and then we will be good to leave.” There is all truth in what I just said. “Okay, goodby—”

“Slow down there, missy. Now you know my first port of call would be Boxer, but he’s conveniently not answering his phone and don’t think for a second that Zayne and I didn’t see the blood on the back of Boxer’s head and his torn suit because top-of-the-range-security-equipment, remember? Zoom technology is our friend. So, what should we be telling Edge? You know he’s going to cut our balls off if there is something we should be reporting into him where Whisper and his family are concerned and I’m very attached to mine.”

“Let’s just say Boxer took a tumble and smashed his head against the road and Evelyn has him covered,” I reply with another honest answer.

“Whyyyy?” Zayne joins in on a sing-song.

“Old age?”

“Try again, missy.” Devil’s tone means to coerce me into supplying more information.

“How about you boys let me drive safely without the chitchat? Boxer isn’t ignoring your call; he’ll be busy getting stitched up by Doc Evelyn, and I am sure he will keep you up-to-date with the shenanigans that have taken place when he gets some time. All is well, and Whisper will hopefully be back in the stretch Hummer within a half an hour, and yes, she will be getting word to Edge of her impending late arrival, and no, you don’t need to notify the groom about anything as Boxer will take care of what he deems necessary. Rest assure your balls will be safe from Edge.”

“You know this is why Edge and Boxer pay us the big bills, don’t you, sweetheart? We are your friendly voyeurs making sure Whisper, and all the beautiful ladies and children don’t need us to call in the two men, Edge has stationed three blocks away ready to be notified if there are any issues,” Zayne enlightens me.

“This I don’t doubt, Zayne. All is good. We do have Torque here, and he’s quite capable and armed. Don’t think I don’t know he will have a weapon close by at all times. What I can have a guess at is you and Devil, are a bit bored and are looking for gossip, and I’m not about to feed it to you. You both know perfectly well Boxer will call you immediately if we need any protection. Now disconnect so I can get on with my errand, so Boxer has something clean to wear. It’s as exciting as a clean suit the reason I’m in the family SUV and nothing more.”

“Ahhh… so Doc won the bet,” Devil chimes back in.

These men are always betting on the silliest things, not that I haven’t joined in a time or two. I’m just miffed I didn’t get an invite into the betting pool.

“I guess we can both leave you alone now, sweetheart,” Zayne pipes back into the conversation. He’s a sweet guy with boy next door looks. He’s got a swimmer’s body: broad shoulders with that whole tapered waist thing going on, which lends itself to a lean strength. His short blond hair often flops about in his face hanging over the frames of his glasses. He’s not as tall as Devil, who is at least six feet, three inches. He’s quieter than Devil and is very thoughtful. Zayne comes with old school manners. He’ll open the door for you, regardless of gender and he’ll be the first to offer to buy a round of drinks.

“Damn, I was enjoying our conversation, missy.” Devil sounds more than a little amused. Devil is very good at what he does, and he knows he’s good looking. Think tall dark and devilishly handsome in that Henry Cavill way, although the guy looks like there’s Italian in his blood, but I’ve never taken the time to ask about his life. Devil’s a ladies’ man, and that gets old quick. At a guess, I would say he’s around twenty-seven-years old. He’s cocky and at times overconfident, but I know he would go down with the ship if it means saving every last woman and child.

I’m a private investigator, and I’ve learned there are a lot of untrustworthy people walking around waiting to hustle and con their way through life. They are the dicks-of-society. Boxer and Edge trust both men, and that’s good enough for me.

“Okay, guys, time to disconnect and I’ll give you a wave when I get back to the house.”

Devil takes the hint and then I’m left with Sam Hunt on the radio and Body Like A Back Road to keep me company.

Ten minutes later I pull into Boxer’s driveway. A thought occurs to me. In all the shenanigans I bet nobody thought to keep Juan in the loop.

I grab my phone and start typing.

Me: We’re all going to be about forty minutes late

No need to panic

Whisper is fine

Boxer is good

Torque’s gonna have trouble sitting but he’s good

I hope Raine can pull out some of his greatest hits

That was a joke

Sort of

Everything is under control

I repeat no need to panic

I’ll message when we are on our way

I’ve roomed with Juan’s hubby—Holland—in the past when they were relatively new to dating each other. At the time, I needed to give my twin brother, Retro, space to be with his girl, Birdie.

Holland, the owner of Freestyle, an art gallery in La Jolla and I hit it off becoming firm friends almost straight away. Birdie and I swapped residences, back then, and life continued on its merry way.

Juan and Holland’s love turned into the real deal, and the rest is history.

I couldn’t imagine them not being a couple.

Juan: Whoa, girlfriend!

Back it up right there

Please assure me the bride is not hurt

Me: Can’t do that

Whisper’s story to tell

Need you to keep the show rolling along calmly at your end

Juan: Is Whisper okay???!!!

Not liking the sound of those messages

I trust you and that strapping man Torque and Boxer will have everything under control at your end

Remaining calm

Me: Yup

There’s been a series of unfortunate events

The bride doesn’t want the groom freaking out

Juan: Oh, boy!

Okay, honey, I’m your man

Keep me posted and good luck

Me: I’ll be leaving Boxer’s home in a few minutes

Juan: Do I want to know?

Me: Nope!

Juan: Remaining calm

Over and Out

I’m unlocking Boxer’s front door when my phone ‘pings.’ I could ignore it, but I know who it is.

Slade: Firebird, what are you doing at Boxer’s place at a time like this?

The damn behemoth is tracking my phone. Something must have alerted Slade to checking where I am.

Me: Last-minute suit change

Slade: Really? You gonna play it that way are you?

Me: No playing, just picking up a suit

Slade: Everybody safe?

Me: I’ve got it covered

Slade: You wanna tell me what is going on?

Me: You trust me?

Slade: Playing hardball now?

Me: Yup

Trust in me and we will all get the bride to Edge in one piece

Just not on time.

BOOK REVIEW:

I bought Carrots in September 2014 and have only just read it and now the Shelby Nichols Adventure is a full-blown series. All the covers are so pretty. I do love them.

Who knew buying carrots could lead to a bullet graze to the head resulting in the ability to read people’s minds?

Shelby is a stay-at-home mum with two teenage children, well, one is twelve. Her husband, Chris, is a lawyer. Shelby pretty quickly gets mixed up in a whole pile of shenanigans which lead her to a confrontation with Ramos, Uncle Joey’s hit-man and standing in front of the mob boss and making a deal with him.

Let all the crazy begin.

The one thing I did enjoy very much was Colleen bringing to life the real-life complications of being married and being able to read your husband’s thoughts. I don’t know how many relationships could withstand that one-sided knowledge and come out the other end, not altogether unscathed, but still in love. That is opening up a whole world of hurt for the person who can read those thoughts, not to mention the invasion of privacy Chris had to deal with. I felt his pain, I really did. But at the same time, he was a bit of a PITA with his ignorance of Kate, the redheaded vixen in the office. I mean...really? Dude you’re supposed to be intelligent. He did redeem himself with me and his love for his wife conquering the hurdles placed in their path. Also, he gets a pass for the invasion of privacy his wife had to learn to deal with and try to control.

Uncle Joey... fear him or love him, he plays his part well. Kate is an excellent biatch. You will loathe her, which equals author's-job-done.

This installment is very silly, possibly a little eye-rolling and a tad predictable, but I will be coming back for more.

Ramos seems a bit of a knock-off of Ranger from Stephanie Plum, but I can live with Ramos if he can show me he’s worth adoring like I adore Ranger. #teamranger

As per the Stephanie Plum series, you will be sure to be getting a car explosion.

I couldn’t rate this first installment any higher because I’m not altogether believing in Shelby’s character as much as I should be from this first installment. She did annoy me a fair bit with her choices and after reading so many Steph Plums, Ramos seemed a little transparent and I do fear a Chris/Joe-Shelby-Ramos/Ranger situation possibly coming over the horizon.

But I won’t know until I read more.

BOOK REVIEW:

What I so enjoy about this series is Quentin Black. Miriam Fox aka Miri is a great character and they make a great team, but Quentin is gorgeous to read. I will admit I do cringe when he begs for sex from Miriam when he is such an alpha character otherwise, but that is my only complaint. I hoped JC wouldn’t repeat it after book 1...but...

I am gonna say the only reason I am not giving this installment 5 stars, is because of the trigger scene. Not because it is a trigger scene because authors, by all means, go ahead and be brave with your content, but... (cue the dramatic music) I needed more than a shower and a few band-aids with the after-care.

OMG!

This is a very graphic chapter where Miri is put through the most horrific things, for many days, over and over and...I'm not upset it's written so detailed, but I wanted her at least checked over afterward by a professional.

GOOD LAWD!

Holy shit on a pumpkin stick!

QB has people who he trusts and dude must need medical care at some stage of his long life, if not write one in, and make it a female doctor.

Seriously, I find this quite lacking and in need of sufficient words to make it better. A sentence that explains whether there are causes for alarm from diseases, pregnancy... damage within the inner girlie department.

Something!

Don't get me started on what your mental state would be afterward.

As I said, this is a very graphic chapter. It is brutal on Miriam. I can see a lot of readers have dropped stars for this, but I can only bring myself to drop a quarter star because taking that one chapter into consideration, compared to the rest of the story, I won’t dock more.

I just think if you are gonna go detailed and I mean DETAILED, then you gotta whip some more words out, JC.

Rant over.

We do get told Miriam is an ex-soldier and she has martial arts skills. I would like to see that side of her coming into play more.

Other than that, I am coming back for more as I do adore QB teaming up with Miriam and the sexual tension thrown in among the mystery.

BOOK REVIEW:

This is my second Victoria Danann read, my first being My Familiar Stranger, Knights of Black Swan # 1.

I really enjoyed the bonus prequel story A Season In Gemini. It is a great background introduction.

I did have a little trouble with Two Princes.

Two grown men going to one hell of a lot of trouble to play at essentially ‘The Parent Trap.’ It did feel a little…erm… what is the right word? Immature?

I found it hard to believe an MC guy and a billionaire (twins) wouldn’t just straight up talk to their parents. It felt kinda lost on me the energy they spent setting it all up.

I have to rate this book in the lower range of 3.5 STARS as it just didn’t feel realistic that a billionaire couldn’t just straight up talk to his mother and an MC guy couldn’t just speak to his father about it. Not the way this story was written anyway.

There was no obstacle put in the path of the twins to make them choose the path they took (swapping identities) only to do the big reveal and the parents didn’t have a major reason to not have told two grown men about their brother. There wasn’t like a dirty reason or anything. I think I was looking for some major reason for the whole shenanigans apart from the mother’s father which was kinda lame.

I needed there to be a real purpose to going to the lengths they did rather than just talking it out.

There were other things like Brigid paying $250,000 for something so she could write her thesis. I don't care how much money a student has got, that just seems preposterous to think it's okay to spend that kind of money to get information for a thesis. If it's gonna cost you that kind of money, pick a new idea for your thesis.

I get what Victoria was doing, but a little OTT.

BOOK REVIEW:

This story starts off in one direction, and I actually forgot dragons were going to be involved and then we make an abrupt right angle.

Enter the dragons.

I did like the idea for this story. I do understand it is a shorter read, but within these pages, I would have liked a little more time spent in some areas.

I really liked Aaron’s character, but then…

I ended up pretty much forgetting about the lad in the first part of the story as I'm now in the reverse harem of sexy dragons, which I likey, maybe a little bit too much.

Hunter is a fave.

I did feel like Elizabeth's character was more seventeen than twenty-four, but then there is what felt like a rather large leap in maturity towards the end of this first installment, which I found a little hard to grab hold of.

I think what I am trying to convey is the story felt a little hurried along for me to be able to give five stars.

I will be reading more in this series as I am intrigued and the covers are beautiful.

I will say this was a good start, but for me personally, I would have liked the change in direction to have been a little more curved—not so hurried and more depth to Elizabeth's character and some of the scenes.

I did enjoy this read.

This is my first JC Andrijeski read and it won’t be my last!

OMG! I SOOO enjoyed Black In White, but just hear me out on a few things little ol' me as the reader/reviewer has to say below.

Miriam Fox aka Miri is a great character. To be truthful I thought—purely from this first installment of the Quentin Black Mystery series—that it should have been titled the Miriam Fox series. Miriam is the focal character, in my opinion, with a delicious helping of QB on the side.

Quentin Black…OMG! I LOVE Quentin. He is such a great character. Well done JC! There was only one time where I was physically shaking my head and pulling a NOOOO face when he did something.

I do love Nick as well. He was a little too determined about one thing and kinda let his professionalism be swept away, but I really like him in Miriam's life.

I’m not going to say much more than that because I reckon you need to dive in and read for yourself.

I am gonna go a little crazy here and still give it 4.5 stars even though I (personally) felt it was too darn easy to pick the baddie. It was a bit of an eye-roll for me when we got to the da…da…da…daaaa... big reveal. This I usually take stars off for and I think quite rightly so as a reviewer. If more suspects were thrown into the plot then it wouldn't be so darn easy.

I also felt at times the author (for me personally) wrote some plot areas too conveniently. What I am trying to convey is certain things happened more in the telling, rather than the showing and it was too convenient the outcome for me as a reader. I would have liked more detail in those areas and it wouldn’t be filler-in, it would possibly enrich the storyline. I do have examples, but I don’t want to point them out as they are my personal issues I have.

But each to their own. It could be a case of it's me and not you.

I really did love the bones of this story. Actually, I freakin’ loved the bones of this story and at the moment Quentin’s personality has totally washed the negative away for me.

This does not happen at all with me as a reviewer usually.

There are so many more books in this series already written that I can hardly wait to dive back in. The cover designs are gorgeous.

I am still admittedly trying to work out the title meaning: Black In White. I have been pondering it and can't seem to nail the title.
New edit: I think I just worked it out.

I understand QB series is a spin-off of the Bridge and Sword series. I happen to have ROOK on my Kindle and the second book Shield is currently FREE (at the time of this posting).

I do recommend meeting Quentin Black and Miriam Fox. QB is a new book boyfriend of mine.

My first Jenn Stark read and boy did it get off to a fast run.

I adored this novella.

The writing is funny, visually descriptive and such a great idea for an urban fantasy series. There is very much a Charley Davidson vibe with the witty dialogue.

I love that our lead female character is a contract hunter of relics. She has a good heart and puts the money she gets paid to good use.

Sara uses tarot cards to help her along the way and the mysterious voice talking to her in her head, which is both sexy and intriguing assists in rather amusing ways.

This voice leaves us wondering who he is and why he is helping Sara Wilde get out of her predicaments. Think a conversation without Bluetooth.

We do eventually find out his name and Getting Wilde will give you much more information on this mysterious voice.

As far as this prequel novella, I did feel like I wanted to know a few deeper facts regarding Sara, but it didn’t stop me from really enjoying Jenn Stark’s urban fantasy voice.

I personally thought this was a rather smashing FREEBIE I came across and quite the gem.

The cover design for all the series is simply gorgeous.

I feel some readers have been quite hard on Jenn's novella, but each to their own. If you are looking for a fun read with a guy that will leave you waiting for his big reveal, and you are open to some madcap, fast-paced relic hunting, then try it on for size.

I have to say, my motor is purring in anticipation for Consumed, Firefighters # 1 with these two delicious novellas under my belt.

Danny and Anne are gonna be explosive. Yeah… another pun totally intended.

Not much I can really say other than I highly recommend reading part 1 and 2 in these super short FREE novellas, which will leave you clicking the next page button looking for more… but there isn’t any.

J.R. Ward’s voice is shining through with her descriptions of the crew of the 499 firehouse. I love her Black Dagger Brotherhood series with a passion. I have dabbled in her Bourbon Kings and Fallen Angels series’, but not completed them or even felt the passion I do for BDB.

I can see already I am gonna have a lot of passion for the Firefighters series.

I want Consumed now. I am already consumed by this new series and it hasn’t even started.

October 2018 isn’t that far away… yeah, it kinda is.

This is a deliciously short FREE novella of only about 48 pages which I thoroughly enjoyed.

This was my first Alisa Woods read and I really enjoyed meeting Lucian, Leonidas, and Leksander, the three dragon prince triplets.

He and his brothers, princes of the House of Smoke, existed for literally one purpose—to keep the mortal and immortal worlds apart, as they should be.

Lucian Smoke was the crown prince of the House of Smoke. He was responsible for fulfilling the requirements of the treaty, which included finding a mate ASAP and producing a dragonling heir—or end up wyvern—on top of managing all things in the realms.

Arabella finds herself in a pickle in an alleyway and before long she finds herself in Lucian’s lair, striking a deal with the crown prince.

All truths may not have been disclosed.

Alisa throws in a few villains to spice up the pages and make us want to know more about Zephan the Fae Prince and Tytus, the leader of the House of Drakkon.

Not least the House of Drakkon, an unsavory nest of black dragons that had been plaguing the city and battling with the House of Smoke for years.

I will be coming back for more because I gotta know what happens in this series. The writing was really good, I just would have liked more depth to this first installment in the plot, but I still enjoyed Kiss of the Dragon. I just found some things a little too convenient. I think that is a fair comment to make.

BOOK REVIEW:

I do love a good Charley Davidson tale that comes with all the crazy shenanigans and side stories to solve, that ultimately weave back around to cross over the finish line = ending of each book.

I-see-dead-people-Charley, Reyes, Cookie, Ubie… the list goes on of main and sub characters that will inevitably make you snort and giggle in your snuggly reading space.

One book after this one and I feel like there is space for things Darynda has to reveal with Charley and this mega thing she is and…and…and…

Like WOW!

My head is spinning.

Okay, so I did love this installment—how could I not?

I figure I’m a relatively smart person, but I gotta say, I am a little *blinks rapidly* about the Reyes side of this story. I totally get what Darynda was doing with Reyes and his God self, but erm…*whispers* I kinda got a bit *cocks head on the side like a puppy* when it came to the why.

OOO yes. The why. The reason. The big reveal.

It may be a case of it’s me and not you, but…*scratches head* I might need a Dummies 101 explanation from Reyes what he was up to this installment from his perspective. I got what he told Charley, I watched what he did throughout the pages…but the ultimate reason, I kinda get, but me being me, wants more detail for that reason. It felt a little unresolved the answer, considering what Charley’s hubby got up to. I might be thinking too hard about it.

*rubs chin with an eyebrow raised*

Putting that aside, I read this series because I LOVE Charley and crew and I want to laugh and I do. I love Reyes like every other reader and he just bakes my cake for me.

Darynda has to have a spin-off planned…surely.

Beep and ...

I mean she can’t leave us with nothing after book 13.

I mean she simply can’t.

Well, she could, but I think there must be more coming.

BOOK REVIEW:

I’ve been scrolling about on Amazon in the paranormal romance genre and picked Witch’s Dawn up for .74c US. The cover caught my eye.

This is a short story at 130 pages and in saying that, I did feel I would have liked a touch more of the story moving me a little more into the series in this first installment to latch onto.

Now, I know some readers aren’t overly pleased with the erm… way Crystal has written the religious tones to this story, but that would be the triggers she adds at the bottom of her blurb.

You just gotta look at the series title 'Unholy Trinity' which gives you the first hint, things are gonna go a little in reverse (no pun intended).

I’m a person that believes anything is possible and I don’t put a label on it. So that is where I stand with religion. I’m not batting for the devil team though. I am thinking along the lines that there is something out there waiting for me when it’s my time and I’m being very open to what is waiting for me on the other side. I am hoping it is all good though and we get to meet up with family members and everything is rosy.

Having said that, I do like how brave Crystal is and I will say unique in bringing a different spin to the reverse harem storytelling. Sure it might trigger some readers and I also understand why that would be so.

I am going with how I felt about reading this first installment and even though I did pull one of those oOOookkkaaaay types of faces in certain parts, it is a fictional story and I am basing my review on the quality of what I read.

Not if it made my eye twitch a few times.

Ash, Raum, and Sal would be the spunky demons and Deja would be the twenty-eight-year-old chickie-babe who does not know what she really is until…

Raum, the one with the shoulder-length dark hair and a raven tattoo on his forearm spoke first. His eyes, dark and deep as a midnight lake, gleamed mischievously. He was the troublemaker, the one I really had to watch out for.

Sal, the one with the stunning green eyes and auburn hair took the seat on the other side of me. His power was the most volatile, ready to strike at any moment. The aura surrounding him crackled with energy that felt like a mixture of simmering rage warning me to stay away, and fiery passion daring me to come closer.

Only Ash remained standing, the quiet, aloof leader of the bunch. He regarded me with icy-blue eyes that burned with curiosity and seemed to take in every detail of me. A hand stroked his short blond beard thoughtfully. The motion made him look like some wise Viking scholar who also happened to be tall and broad enough to go into battle.

Anywho in reverse harem style, the demon lads get a little sexy with Deja and she starts to kind of awaken in little bits along the way.

“Deja,” one mouth growled possessively against my throat.

“Who are you?” I moaned, barely able to breathe with my pulse hammering so hard, my insides so hot on the verge of exploding.

Once you've read this story, the cover art reveals a lot more. This I likey.

Overall I did enjoy this short read, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm looking forward to knowing more.

I really enjoyed meeting Ana and Lachlan and the whole cast of interesting characters, including the Cats of Catastrophe. They are this fun trio of sidekicks.

The first chapter starts off fast-paced as we follow, Ana, a Dragon God, whose magic hasn’t developed fully yet as she battles demons and anything else thrown in her path during the trainee obstacle course, in Edinburgh.

The Undercover Protectorate Institute is dedicated to helping supernaturals with problems that were so dangerous the magical government didn’t want to handle them.

Ana Blackwood is training at the Academy to eventually graduate and join the Protectorate like her sister, Bree, who joined the Paranormal Investigative Team.

Enter Lachlan Munroe. He has a job that needs all hands on deck, including the trainee, Ana.

The man standing at the front was insanely beautiful—in a raw, powerful kind of way. He had to be well over six feet tall. Though he wore dark jeans and a black jacket, it wasn’t had to see that he was built like a boxer.

But his face…

Like a fallen angel, here to deliver justice. But a dark angel, with black hair and eyes. Handsome, yet a tiny bit scary in his perfection.

I really like Lachlan’s character. There is this insta-attraction and naturally, he picks Ana to work closely with on a retrieval mission.

Sparks fly, hearts flutter.

Ana is intelligent and has a good heart. She works well with Lachlan at her side and when she needs to, takes the initiative.

I sprinted around the pool, naked as a jaybird and way too close to getting hit in the face with my own boobs.

This book is a page-turner where visually I saw it all play out well in my mind. The action and battle scenes were choreographed well and painted an exciting picture in my mind as it all played out.

I have not read the other Dragon’s Gift series’ as yet, where some of the sub characters that pop up in The Druid # 1 have their own stories.

Linsey wrote this first book in The Druid series as though I didn’t have to know the characters from the previous spin-off series’ to read this one. Usually, I would read in the best reading order the author recommends, but this time I decided to go a little crazy and be a rebel to my own rules.

I do love what I read about Bree’s character in this book, so I am keen to read The Valkyrie series next.

Overall, I am excited to read more of Linsey’s work.

BOOK REVIEW:

I’ve not read any Hailey Edwards before Dog with A Bone. I picked it up because A) It was a freebie and B) It is a short read. I’d just come off reading two books, one after the other, 400+ pages each, and I needed a short read in my system. Hailey’s book caught my eye, while scrolling about Amazon (not that I needed to look for any more books to purchase if you knew how many I have on the cloud).

This story starts off with a brief jaunt in the scrapyard where Thierry passes her cadetship and becomes a marshal. In the scrapyard opening scene, I meet Shaw and Mai and then after a few days off… (no spoilers here)

Bam! Marshal Thackery (Thierry) of the Southwestern Conclave was reporting for duty and receiving OJT (on the job training) with Marshall Shaw on Monday morning. Then we are rushing head first into a case, that wasn’t a whodunit. I was looking forward to having some suspects, throwing about other characters and getting into the thick of it, but it didn't actually go that way.

I did enjoy this introduction to Thierry and Shaw and a rather erm… confusing start to this series. When I say confusing, I am not easily confused, but I kept feeling a bit baffled as to the rushed world-building and the Richardson case. I felt like I was missing some pieces and I was floundering about, but I kept rolling with the story and then my eye was twitching because I felt a bit lost with the speed and lack of solid world-building to put me in that comfy place.

Finishing the ebook, the end book matter actually states: Dog With A Bone is a prequel to the series in the sense that the novella cuts a hole into the ceiling of Thierry’s past and gives us a glimpse of those first steps that set the events of the trilogy into motion one year later.

Cool. I appreciate those words from the author. I think I would have preferred to get to know Cadet Thackery a lot more in this prequel and the hints dropped by the author between Thierry and her instructor having some sort of crush or something that happened during that cadetship.

Thierry is eighteen and Shaw is…I may have missed his age, but he is a lot older or felt that way in this prequel. Not that that matters.

I feel I missed actually getting that introduction into Thierry and her cadetship at the marshal academy. It was totally a glimpse and then we were onto the Richardsons without really learning much about the world the author has created and those hints of something between Thierry and her instructor.

I have purchased several more books by this author from her other series' as well as this series for me to sink my reader teeth into.

I did like the action and I do like Thierry and Shaw.

I enjoyed this read and I will be onward bound for more Hailey Edwards’ books in the future.

BOOK REVIEW:

This series is raved about and gets so many five stars and glowing reviews, and that is absolutely freakin’ fantastic!

I do personally find it very, very slow-paced.

I am addicted to reading the series…but not a lot happens inside each book for such thick books.

But I’m addicted.

This series is so different, and it really is Simon’s series, he kinda owns it with Meg playing side-character, even more so in this installment, but yet she is the reason for the series. But this story was also shared with Monty and Lizzy.

I don’t have any quotes that stood out and that annoys me because I feel as though I should have some.

Visually I see everything so clearly, but it is like a slow stroll in the park the action side to the story, and that kinda bothers me too for a paranormal/urban fantasy read.

There was one fighting scene that stood out for me. Simon got hurt, shit went down, and tragedy happened. But Meg is still giving out sugar cubes, sorting the mail and thinking about her feelings for Simon. Now the girls have banded together to help the other Blood Prophets survive outside of their previously controlled existence.

Simon is a smart wolf, but he seems so clueless with Meg. He owns a bookstore, he needs to order in a self-help book on ‘How to have a relationship’ and have a thorough read. I get that Anne is showing us two individuals having a hard time working out how to hold hands and what it means, but, this is the third book in the series.

Time to grab that hand and… well, we are halfway there. ;)

I like the introduction of the mysterious ‘other’ above Simon and the da…da…da…daaaaaa moment.

I feel as though I need a break and will continue Marked In Flesh at a later date.

BOOK REVIEW:

Another blood-thirsty installment in the Jack Daniels series, with a villain worthy of being labeled a top-notch psychopath.

J.A. Konrath gives the reader enough detail for our minds to grab his gruesome descriptive, tuck it under our arm, and act out our own scene visually coloring it in technicolor.

Yuuuumee.

Konrath is very good with letting our minds take the reins and letting our own imagination disgust ourselves with what we see from his pages of villainous debauchery.

Little side stories are weaving in and out of Bloody Mary. Jack’s partner, Herb, is having a mid-life and he’s not handling it well.

Mr. Friskers has his moments of stardom with his catty behaviour—pun intended—and Harry, who I am not sure if I should like or hate, is there to assist using his own brand of assistance.

Throw in an ex-husband; a mother who is trying to rekindle/do a little matchmaking; a necrophile, and a very patient Latham (boyfriend), and Jack finds herself up to her eyeballs in blood, sex, and fears.

Sometimes you can tell (don’t hit me with a pillow) when a male author is writing a female lead character because of the lack of emotion in said character’s inner layers. I hope that came out right. Jack can be a bit blokey sometimes, and that is great, but sometimes you want a little more of what is underneath. Her job does come first but unlike Eve Dallas from In Death series, there is that layer underneath we get to see, even though her job also comes first and she is in a male-dominated, tough field. Eve is both feminine and also tough as nails. She is better than some males in her field at what she does, but she can also show us the other side of her personality.

Latham was a bit of a doormat in this story, and Jack acted a bit like a guy with her attitude towards the ex-husband turning up and her current boyfriend and how she should go about juggling those two.

Wrong!!

What J.A. does so well, is getting inside a psychopath’s head. He is really good at the descriptive and the inner workings of their mind.

This series is dark, unapologetically gory and comes with banter in good and bad taste, and I am ridiculously addicted.

This book was ALL the stars for me and then some.

Just lay on your back under a clear sky and look up, and that is how many stars.

Ryodan and Dani… I love them.

I've loved them so hard since Iced.

I got so upset when Burned wasn’t about Ryodan and Dani—but, I got over it. I didn’t realize until I was heavily into the book and my dynamic duo were hidden under Mac and Barrons.

This book was everything.

The emotions.

I kissed him with the rainbow-colored shattered hopes and dreams of a child betrayed in ways too damaging and numerous to count, and I kissed him with the yearning to be the one making joy blaze from his eyes.

The deeper layers.

“Ah, Dani,” he said tightly, “you beat me. You tell me what to do. I seem to have forgotten which of us is the man. Perhaps you need a reminder.”

Finally, Ryodan and Dani.

The second thing baffles me. I often feel like crying. I’ve wept on his flawless, crisp shirts more times than I care to remember.

“Because I understand,” he murmured, staring down at me with those glittering silver eyes. “And I can take it. I wasn’t sure about the happiness, though. Nice of you to clear that up.”

“What part of ‘stay out of my head’ didn’t you understand?”

“Your face, Dani. Everything you feel is on it. I rarely need to delve deeper.”

“Ah, Dani.” Ryodan touched my cheek, brushing a stray curl back and tucking it behind my ear. “Men can be bloody bastards. But not all of them. Don’t let it shut you down. Be fearless. Don’t be afraid to fall. Taste it all.”

Dani has so much heart to give. I adore reading her. I loved her fourteen-year-old self in Iced, and I loved her more in High Voltage.

So cool finding out Ryodan’s full name. Totally suits him.

Christian. So glad to see you again. I can see more storyline opening up from what we are shown in this book.

"Scotland is enchanting. And now I know why angels have wings. It's their reward."

I was faltering a little with my enthusiasm for this series since Burned, probably because I felt burned by Dani and Ryodan disappearing after Iced and being replaced again by Mac storyline. This book made up for it. The writing is superb. The ‘feels’ will stab at your heart.

“Never. Tell. Me. I. Don’t. Care. You can fling any insult you want at me, but not that one. Never that one.”

A quote that hit my heart deep.

“Prolonged grief is self-mutilation; a blade you turn on yourself. It doesn’t bring them back and only keeps you trapped in misery.”

Very hard to find that off switch.

I need more Dani and Ryodan. There are so many secrets to discover within High Voltage, and they will make your heart hurt and fly.

I highly recommend this book. Simply amazing storyline.

When you have a fling after a night of drunken Karaoke, things always seem a little emotionally messy afterward.

Winter and Ivy basically act like teenagers. LOL. They are unable to have an adult conversation about what happened, instead, Ivy resorts to taxi stalking.

If Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter, with his lapis-lazuli eyes which could stop a herd of stampeding women in their tracks, happened to be finishing work around this hour…

I did have to google lapis-lazuli and it is a very nice color. But all googling aside… these two are kinda cute the way they behaved.

One thing leads to another and Ivy is back on the job, but this time undercover in Scotland, working as a runner for the T.V. show she adores, Enchantment.

Think Survivor, but of the magical kind where everybody playing seems to get a role, some a little deadlier than others.

Ivy sees the bitchier side of being on a reality show while doing some super sleuthing with Rafe. Naturally, with shenanigans-a-plenty, the writing ensures the pages will turn rapidly.

I liked the curveballs thrown in and the whodunnit is hard to pick this time around. The obvious is too obvious.

Brutus ups his ‘tude in Star Witch and you can’t help wanting to read more of him among the pages. He is rather a cheeky little guy.

Rafe is becoming more of a rule-breaker around Ivy, mainly because she’s already breaking the rules so he has to go with the flow.

Star Witch is fun, witty and easy to read.

And oh… my to that ending!
