Yes, not content with taking on James Bond in Casino Royale, Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to tangle with Asgard’s favourite son in the superhero sequel.
What this means is that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki will crop up very briefly, then be seen disappearing over a golden cliff in a ball of flame…. JUST KIDDING, HIDDLESTONERS! According to Variety, everyone’s favourite god of mischief will still be causing problems for everyone, but if Mikkelsen locks in a deal, he’ll have some help.
Exactly which villain Mikkelsen is up for has yet to be revealed. Thor has an extensive rogues gallery, so he could be anything – Executioner, Mangog, Mephisto… Give us your best guess in the comments below or in the Twitsphere.
Most of the original cast are scheduled to return alongside Empire Award-winner / Army leader Hiddleston, including Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander, Joshua Dallas and Rene Russo.
Game Of Thrones veteran Alan Taylor is directing, working from a script by Don Payne and Robert Rodat. The film will hit our screens in November 2013.

Source: EmpireOnline

Ashley Hamilton Circles Iron Man 3

Ashley Hamilton Circles Iron Man 3
He may suit up as Firepower...

Source: Variety

It’s a double dip day for possible Marvel movie casting, so let’s tackle the first: Ashley Hamilton, who is best known for, er, being George’s son and Rod Stewart’s step son, is in talks to play Firepower in Iron Man 3.
The character, also known as Jack Taggert, takes part in Project: Firepower, which aims to develop an armoured suit to match Tony Stark’s Iron Man duds. It’s not yet known what role the character and his armour will play in the film, but we doubt it’ll be good for Tony. Still, Firepower will also only be a minor part in the movie.
And though Taggert is a headache for our hero, if Hamilton signs on, he’ll have a good time on set, since he’s one of Robert Downey Jr’s mates… He doesn’t exactly have the biggest acting resume, with work on US soap Sunset Beach, and episode of HBO’s Oz and a few movies, including Beethoven’s 2nd among his credits. He’s been more known for his personal life, including failed marriages to Shannen Doherty and Angie Everhart. More recently, he competed on Dancing With The Stars and is a reporter for showbiz show Extra.
Shane Black co-wrote the script for Iron Man 3 with Drew Pearce and is now shooting the movie in North Carolina. Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle are back, with newcomers Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, James Badge Dale and Rebecca Hall also aboard. Oh, and Jon Favreau tweeted a picture of his Happy Hogan chair on set today, which points to him popping up in the pic at some point. While he’s going to be visiting the set anyway as an executive producer, it really wouldn’t be Iron Man without him. And now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it's official: he's on board as Hogan. Happy day!
The film is scheduled to arrive on May 3 next year.

Source: EmpireOnline

Bradley Cooper Aims For American Sniper

Bradley Cooper Aims For American Sniper
He's producing and may star
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Navy SEALs. Right now, especially for filmmakers, they are as trendy as young adult book franchises. So you can’t blame Bradley Cooper for wanting to take a chunk of that sweet SEAL movie action for himself. He’s busy setting up his first project for his production company, and it just so happens to be an adaptation of former SEAL Chris Kyle’s autobiography, American Sniper.
Kyle’s book, which bears the subtitle The Autobiography Of The Most Lethal Sniper In US Military History, finds the Texas-born shooting notching the highest recorded number of kills for an American. But his dedication to his sights and his SEAL mates has an impact on his relationship with his wife.
If he likes what he sees when he reads Jason Dean Hall’s script, Cooper will most likely take on the lead role.
He’ll next be seen in The Words, followed by The Place Beyond The Pines and Silver Linings Playbook, which showed off some footage in Cannes. He’s set to film The Hangover Part 3 this autumn and is also circling a role in Woody Allen’s latest, untitled movie.

Source: EmpireOnline

Elijah Wood Attacks In Maniac Trailer

Elijah Wood Attacks In Maniac Trailer
Just the thing for a sunny weekend

Source: Twitch

Here's a slice of extreme nastiness to take you into the weekend, in the form of a very-much-NSFW trailer for Maniac. The remake of the notorious 1980 slasher stars Elijah Wood. Roles like this aren't unprecedented in his career - cast your mind back to Sin City - but still, Frodo seems like a long time ago. No wonder he fancied a nice trip back to New Zealand for The Hobbit.
There are shades of American Psycho in the apparently sexually-charged violence on show here, but the overwhelming feeling is one of total bleakness, rather than the black humour and satire of the Mary Harron film. Those shots of an anguished Elijah looking at himself in the mirror suggest a character that's not enjoying himself one bit.
And that tone to the violence is going to be a key factor in the sort of release Maniac gets in the UK. William Lustig's original was one of the infamous "video nasties" that troubled the BBFC in the 80s, and while that version is now available in this country, it's still shorn of about a minute. The BBFC has always been very careful about violence shown from a first-person POV perspective. There's enough of that in this trailer alone, to suggest that Maniac might have classification problems ahead.
The story, as before, is about a killer with a fetish for scalping his victims. Elijah's Frank runs a mannequin store and gets involved with Nora Anezeder's Anna when she asks for help with an art installation. Cue much bloody psychological unravelling.
This version is directed by Frank Khalfoun (P2), and written and produced by Alexandre Aja and Greg Levasseur (The Hills Have Eyes, Haute Tension). It's set to close out the Cannes Film Festival, so we'll start hearing if it's as bad as it looks shortly...

Source: EmpireOnline

Four New Dark Knight Rises Banners

Four New Dark Knight Rises Banners
The Bat, the Cat & the Bane in action

After the recent onslaught of imagery, you may think there are no possible pictures left from The Dark Knight Rises that could be turned into posters. But you would be wrong! There are four new banners on the magical Interwebs, and they can be found below.

We really are not going to be allowed to forget that Chris Nolan is bringing his Bat-trilogy to a close with this final, Gotham-shattering instalment. And let’s be honest, why would we want to?
With Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne dealing with the biggest threat his faced, in the shape of the hulking Bane (Tom Hardy) and tangling with friend-or-foe cat burglar Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), we’re already all excited at the idea.
The new banners may not be revolutionary, but we'd put any of 'em on our walls. The Dark Knight Rises arrives on July 20.
But if you’re truly after new pics and some actual, in-depth, on-set detail about Rises, you’ll be wanting to snatch up a copy of Empire’s Bat-tastic new issue, which hits shops and the iPad on Thursday May 31. It’s crammed with exclusive peeks at the new movie and a look back at the entire Nolan run. Oh! And free posters to boot. Don’t say we don’t ever do anything nice for you.
Check out an exclusive preview of our massive feature and the covers below.

Empire's Dark Knight Rises issue - out Thursday 31 May.

Source: EmpireOnline

The Exorcist Will Possess TV Screens
The Exorcist Will Possess TV Screens
Via Martha Marcy director Sean Durkin

Source: Vulture

Here’s an idea we fear will lead to more pea-soup vomiting fury than the happy clapping of hands: though The Exorcist has shown remarkable resistance to remakes (unless you count the multiple films that have tried to tackle the possession concept and ripped off the basics), now someone has had the bright idea to turn William Peter Blatty’s best-selling book into a TV series.
The person spearheading the notion might give a little more reason for calm, though – Martha Marcy May Marlene writer-director Sean Durkin, who at least delivered a compelling, well-constructed film with his first effort. And the telly format means the story can be explored in even more depth… The fact that Roy Lee, the producer of the American version of The Ring is also behind it, could give more pause, but it’s at least someone versed in horror.
According to Vulture, Durkin’s version will follow the events leading up to the possession of young Regan and particularly the aftermath of a family left picking up the pieces. No network is yet involved, but there have been several interested parties sniffing around the project.
But can any version truly compare with William Friedkin’s solid gold classic? It appears we’re about to find out…

Source: EmpireOnline

Warners Has A Case Of The Wind

Warners Has A Case Of The Wind
David Koepp writing secret space film

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Dear Warners: you really can’t expect to title a top-secret new sci-fi project The Wind and not have us trying our best to avoid making fart gags. But here goes nothing: the studio has set up the project with ads director Nic Mathieu.
What can we tell you about the film itself? Very little, hence the “top secret" bit. But The Hollywood Reporter was able to dig up one small detail: it’ll be set in a space colony.
And while the studio is turning to a first-time feature director (albeit one who has been impressing executives with his handling of CG effects in his commercials), it is leaving writing duties to a very experienced hand, with David Koepp firing up his word processor. Koepp, a veteran of Spielberg films and a go-to script doctor when he’s not writing and directing his own movies, most recent helped out with Men In Black 3 and wrote Angels & Demons. His next directing job, Premium Rush, will hit our cinemas on September 14.
As for when we can expect The Wind to gust in? It’s at such an early stage that that is anyone’s guess. But when it gets released, we hope it doesn’t smell. WE COULDN’T RESIST.
To take a look at one of Mathieu’s recent ads, Cadillac spot Turbulence, throw your eyes below.

Source: EmpireOnline

Owen Wilson Finds Squirrels to the Nuts

Owen Wilson Finds Squirrels to the Nuts
Brie Larson also in Bogdanovich comedy

Source: Variety

When your film is being co-produced by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach, you know the word quirky is unlikely to be far behind. So it goes with Peter Bogdanovich’s new comedy Squirrel To The Nuts, which will star Owen Wilson, Brie Larson and Olivia Wilde.
Frankly, the title alone would be enough for the q-word to strike, but Bogdanovich’s latest, based on his script finds a prostitute-turned Broadway actor (Larson) seeing her two professional worlds collide.
Wilson will be a big-name Broadway director who regularly hires Larson for both of her skillsets, despite the fact that he’s married to the star of the play. Wilde, meanwhile, will be therapist whose own mother is in rehab.
According to Variety, the producers are trying to get Jason Schwartzman to sign on, but he’s still playing it coy.
There’s no solid financing in place yet, but Bogdanovich is targeting an autumn shoot and with the talent already involved, we doubt it’ll be long before he’s rounded up the cash he needs.
Wilson is working on Mad Man creator Matthew Weiner’s film You Are Here and then plans to reunite with his Wedding Crashers cohort Vince Vaughn for The Internship. Larson, who most recently appeared in 21 Jump Street, will next work (alongside Wilde) on comedy Relanxious. Wilde has a hefty schedule of movies due out in the coming months, including People Like Us, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Ron Howard’s Rush.

Source: EmpireOnline

Fresh Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Promo
Fresh Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Promo
Honest Abe chops heads & stabs vamps

Source: IGN

While we’ve already had a couple of promos for Timur Bekmambetov’s history / myth mash-up Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, we haven’t had one that can show off the filmmaker’s commitment to hard Abe-on-vampire slaying action. That changes today with the arrival of an unrated trailer at IGN, which you can watch below. Bear in mind that it's full of blood-splattered action and could be considered NSFW. Especially if you work in Dracula's castle.
Adapted by Seth Grahame-Smith from his novel, the movie tracks the president from his humble beginnings as a young man, weaving in a fictional tale of vampires impacting his life from the start. When a fanged fiend murders his mother, Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) swears revenge and, with a little help from friendly vamp Henry Sturgess (Dominic Cooper), trains himself in the difficult art of slaying them. Cue a succession of stabbings, beheadings, slicings, stakings and choppings.
It’s a good thing he pulls a Buffy, too, since the fang club is conspiring with slave owners to take over the fractured and less-than-united States, and only a few people can help.
This time around we finally get some proper footage of Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who appears to be a proactive Mary Todd Lincoln, and a little more with Rufus Sewell’s villainous vamp Adam, who lures Abe into an ambush at one point.
From the looks of this, the movie is chock full of Bekmambetov’s usual flourishes and speed-shifts, plus plenty of bloody battles. We’ll see if it all works when the film arrives on June 20.

Source: EmpireOnline

Anthony Hopkins Up For Red 2

Anthony Hopkins Up For Red 2
If he can make the schedule work...
Source: Deadline

With pre-production on retired-agents-proving-they-can-still-kick-ass sequel Red 2 now in full swing, director Dean Parisot and the producers have been setting their sights on actors of a certain age who might be up for a little gunplay with Bruce Willis and co. They appear to have found one very willing recruit in Anthony Hopkins.
The actor, who is currently in Prestige Acting Mode for Sacha Gervasi’s making-of-Psycho drama Hitchcock, is apparently happy to kick back and play a scheming baddie named Edward Bailey in the knockabout action comedy follow-up.
But there’s a slight hitch in the form of Hopkins’ busy work diary. It's possible the Red shoot could clash with a prior commitment – namely, donning the eye patch and gold armour of Odin for Thor 2.
If the dates can be figured out, though, Hopkins would join a cast that includes Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and series newcomers Catherine Zeta-Jones and Byung-hun Lee.
Parisot, working from a script by Red veterans Erich and John Hoeber, is set to start shooting this autumn.

Source: EmpireOnline

Cannes: Bonnie Wright’s Short Film
Cannes: Bonnie Wright’s Short Film
Harry Potter star gets into directing

Bonnie Wright is a busy bee. At the age of 21, she’s already a fast-rising star, thanks to her role as Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter series, as well as an in-demand model (fact: she won the cup for Most Edgy Look at last year’s Rodial Beautiful Awards). And now, having recently graduated from London College Of Communication, she’s turned her hand to filmmaking. Wright is in Cannes with her directorial debut, a short film called Separate We Come, Separate We Go, which she showed to Empire earlier today.
The 11-minute tale of a young girl who lives in the Kentish coastal area of Dungeness with her depressed mum, it’s largely set outdoors, as Thea (Emily Dunham) goes for a stroll across eerie flats and encounters a mysterious man, played by David Thewlis. Sweet, gentle and assured, it’s an impressive first work from someone who clearly has ambition to burn.
“I wanted to make something personal and I’ve spent a lot of time in Dungeness, because my parents have a house just down the coast from there,” says Wright. “So it has a strong connection to my family. Also, I was always a massive fan of Derek Jarman and he spent his last years there. I just love the strangeness of it, the bleakness. The more I’ve been there, the more I fall in love with it.”
Wright is a cinephile – in Cannes she’s made time to watch Lawless, The Angels’ Share and On The Road – but says she’ll stick to making short films for a while to come. “I don’t want to dabble in a feature for quite a long time. My plan is to keep trying out different genres, until I find my feet.”
In the meantime, she’s not giving up the day job, with two more acting jobs lined up for 2012. “I’m doing Shakespeare’s Sister, which is a period piece, all on location,” she shares. “Sasha Spielberg is playing my sister, my character is all in flashbacks and it’s set in ‘40s New England. I’m also doing a British independent film called In Want Of A Wife, and might be doing a music video as well. I can never sit still!”

Source: EmpireOnline

G.I. Joe: Retaliation crew, we have some news you might want to sit down for: they’re not coming this summer. Actually, the entire film is being shifted to March 2013 so that Paramount can run it through the 3D-O-Matic machine. We can hear the complaints even now…
According to Deadline, one studio exec explained the move thusly: "We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally. Jim Cameron did all of Titanic‘s 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out.” Well, at least they were honest about the reason. But it won't stop anyone thinking that there's more to it than that...
The movie had been scheduled to arrive on June 29 across the pond and August 3 here. While the shift means a March 29, 2013 release in the US, we don’t yet know what that means for the UK – but we imagine it will arrive around the same time.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation is directed by John M Chu and features Johnson, Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, Jonathan Pryce, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, Arnold Vosloo and DJ Cotrona.

Source: EmpireOnline

Gary Oldman Joins Robocop
Gary Oldman Joins Robocop
He'll be Robo's creator...
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

is ploughing ahead in the casting process and has scored a big name in the shape of Gary Oldman.
The actor (and Jameson Empire Award winner) will be seen on screen this summer helping another iconic hero in The Dark Knight Rises, and now he’s signed on to play Norton, a scientist who takes the battered, bullet-ridden, all-but-dead body of police officer Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) and rebirths him as the cyborg future of law enforcement.
Though there wasn’t a featured role for a scientist in the original (the sequels explored the idea a little more), it sounds as though director Jose Padilha and current writer James Vanderbilt are exploring similar territory to Paul Verhoeven’s film, with Norton struggling to balance Murphy’s ideals with the grasping corporate needs of the company – most likely OCP – that provides the funding for the project.
With the movie tentatively set to arrive next summer, Padilha and his team will be gearing up a shoot this August in Toronto.
As well as Christopher Nolan’s latest (due, of course, on July 20) Oldman will also be seen in Lawless, Motor City icon Richard Ayoade. Fortunately, this latest promo, courtesy of Conan O’Brien’s show, at least gives us a brief sampling. Check it out below.

The movie finds Stiller, Vaughn, Hill and Ayoade as four blokes in a seemingly sleepy suburban US town who form a neighbourhood watch group as a way to get out of boring family chores like, er, spending time with their families.
But while it all starts as a chance for a little male bonding, they soon discover that all is not what it seems in the area, and that they might actually have to stand up and fight an incursion by nasty, lizard-like extra-terrestrials.
After sidestepping and hiding the sci-fi element before, the film’s marketing is now making it front and centre (probably to avoid comparisons to recent real-life neighbour hood watch controversies in the US), so do be careful of mild spoilers. Now the latter studio has scored him a second job, taking on the adaptation of video game title Shadow Of The Colossus.
Fumito Ueda created the game in 2005. It finds the hero desperate to bring back his beloved, who he believes has died. Journeying into a forbidden land, he summons a demon who claims to raise the dead. But – naturally – there’s a price for his services, and the young man must kill 16 colossi ruling the mystical realm. But even as he sets about his quest, the man starts to worry that perhaps he’s been tricked. To which we must reply: well, duh.
According to Deadline, Trank is a fan of the game and was the one who approached Sony about the idea. He and producer Kevin Misher are now meeting with writers to find the right scribe for the job.

Source: EmpireOnline

Peter Segal Builds The Machine

Peter Segal Builds The Machine
Directing the Vin Diesel comedy
Source: Variety

As announced last year, in between Fast 6 and Riddick, an unnamed project by the Unknown writers and his long-cherished Hannibal epic, Vin Diesel is making time for a family-friendly adventure. And it looks as if The Machine may now have a director, in Peter Segal.
Diesel is producing as well as starring in the film, which sees him play a Pentagon-created ultimate weapon who's been mothballed for twenty years but is accidentally reactivated by a young boy who becomes his new best friend. Cue said terminator finding a family and deciding he wants to be nice, just as the bad old government realises an ultimate weapon is just what it needs. Yes indeed, it's The Iron Giant And The Hendersons.
The Machine's writers are Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, who were responsible for Vin's The Pacifier. Segal's last movie project was the so-so Get Smart with Steve Carell, but he's worked most often with Adam Sandler: he directed Anger Management, Fifty First Dates and The Longest Yard.
There's no start-date yet, and Segal is already attached to Grudge Match and also very keen to get moving on the manga-adaptation Bleach, which he's also producing. So if he does sign on the line for The Machine, it may still be a good while before we see it...

Source: EmpireOnline

Universal Opens Hero Factory

Universal Opens Hero Factory
Planning their own Lego movie
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

There's already a Lego movie underway at Warner Bros, but, sticking with the toy theme in spite of Battleship, Universal are now getting in on the block-rocking action. The studio is developing a movie based on Lego's Hero Factory line. Predators writers Michael Finch and Alex Litvak are in talks to put the screenplay together.
The Hero Factory emerged from the ashes of the Bionicles, which Lego discontinued in 2010. Like that earlier range, it's a series of toys and playsets that arrives more-or-less intact, not requiring the brick-based assembly of classic Lego. The set-up is in Makuhero City (see what they did there?) in a galaxy far, far away, where giant robots are built to take on monstrous intergalactic villains.
The factory has a storage facility where the baddies are imprisoned (like Lego Titans in a Lego Tartarus, or something), until everything goes awry and there's a breakout. But it turns out that that's just a distraction, and the dastardly Von Nebular has stayed behind to bring the factory down with his black hole staff. The rotter!
It's all pretty distinct from the Warner film, which is being constructed by the Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller. That one's thought to be a family-friendly mix of live-action and animation, while Hero Factory will be aiming more for a Transformers vibe. Finch and Litvak are no strangers to toy franchise movies, having previously taken a shot at the long-in-the-works new Masters Of The Universe.
Deals are still being worked on, so there's no official start date or green light so far. Mark Hamill voiced Von Nebular for an animated TV mini-series. Whether he'll be the subject of a Peter Cullen-type fan campaign remains to be seen. Hey let's start one now!

Source: EmpireOnline

Anchorman 2 Teaser Poster Arrives
Anchorman 2 Teaser Poster Arrives
The legend continues!
Source: Collider.com

In the US, some lucky audiences will get the chance to see special Anchorman 2 teaser footage before their screenings of The Dictator – footage already in the can to wet our whistles like three fingers of Glenlivet – while the rest of us will have to wait until it comes online. Still, we can console ourselves with this new poster of the Channel 4 news team.
Sure, it's just Brick, Brian, Champion and Ronald, lined up in a row, shoes staring into the distance, but there's something about it. Something... newsworthy. You know, aside from the fact that a couple of the guys appear on only have one leg.
Ah, that's it – it's the name. It seems that McKay and Ferrell are forgoing the Anchorman 2 tag that the sequel's been dubbed so far, instead calling it Anchorman: The Legend Continues. Something that makes sense, as the original film's full name was, of course, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

And just in case you missed it – not likely, admittedl

For more on Anchorman: The Legend Continues, check out our exclusive interview with director Adam McKay in the current issue.

Source: EmpireOnline

Scott Z Burns Writing Apes Sequel

Scott Z Burns Writing Apes Sequel
Putting the evolution in revolution
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Given that Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes overcame reboot scepticism to end up as one of last year’s big blockbuster delights, a sequel was all but guaranteed. So it came to pass; with 20th Century Fox locking down performance capture guru / ape actor extraordinaire Andy Serkis into a new deal and getting other elements set up. The embryonic film is now going through a typical sequel convulsion, with Contagion writer Scott Z Burns hired to craft the latest draft of the script.
While few details are known about the story just yet, we do know that it will continue the plot kicked off at the end of Rise, with the apes now further established on their way to becoming the new rulers of Earth. How far along remains to be seen.
Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa have worked on the first draft, and the job will now be handed to Burns, which makes sense given his Contagion experience, since the movie also introduced another crucial element in the simian uprising: a virulent plague that began spreading through humanity and slowly wiping us out. But we’d predict Silver and Jaffa will still be involved in some way, especially as they were replaced several times during the torturous process of getting the first movie to the screen, and yet ended up in charge of the shooting draft.
Very little else is locked in at this point beyond Serkis, but director Rupert Wyatt is also likely to return whenever the movie is ready to shoot.

Source: EmpireOnline

Aaron Sorkin Writing Steve Jobs Biopic

Aaron Sorkin Writing Steve Jobs Biopic
For Scott Rudin and Sony
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

You are Sony Pictures. You’re planning a film about a legend in the technology industry, a man who was a benevolent god to some and a bête noire to others. You already have Scott Rudin aboard to produce. So what’s the missing piece of the puzzle? Why, Social Network scriptwriter Aaron Sorkin, of course!
Since he was first approached in November, Sorkin has spent the time umming, ahhing and being busy crafting new HBO drama The Newsroom. But now he's finally given in to the studio’s romantic overtures and will adapt Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs for the big screen. Sony apparently splashed out $1 million for the rights to the bestseller, which is based on interviews with the man himself and others and covers most of his life. There’s no word on what chunk Sorkin will focus on, but more importantly, we wonder what this will mean for Joshua Michael Stern’s Jobs. Stern already has Ashton Kutcher attached to star as the young Steve and a good head start on Sony’s project. But you’ve got to think he’ll be looking over his shoulder at the behemoth headed his way.
“Steve Jobs’ story is unique: he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time,” Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal said in a statement picked up by The Hollywood Reporter. “There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we’re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining and polarizing."
Now we wonder who will be hired to direct the thing…. And who do you think Sony will hire as Jobs? But David Gordon Green is giving her the chance to see things from another perspective, after casting her in his long-gestating remake of Suspiria.
Green has written a new script with Chris Gebert, which roughly follows the plot of Dario Argento’s 1977 original chiller. In it, a girl named Suzie travels to Europe to attend a renowned school, only to find out that the place is the front for a powerful, vindictive coven of witches.
The film will be one of many selling rights at Cannes, and Green is gearing up to crank the cameras in September, realising a dream he’s had since before the likes of Pineapple Express and The Sitter.
Fuhrman has worked on indie drama The Healer and is currently shooting M Night Shyamalan’s After Earth alongside Will Smith and Jaden Smith.

Source: EmpireOnline

Will Forte Could Visit Nebraska

Will Forte Could Visit Nebraska
For Alexander Payne's next pic
Source: Deadline

Now that the awards hoopla is far in his rear view mirror, The Descendants director Alexander Payne has been able to spend some more time properly setting up his next film, Nebraska. And it appears he’s already zeroing in on the leads, with former SNL regular Will Forte and veteran Bruce Dern in his sights.
Nebraska has been squatting on Payne’s To Do list for years now, coming close to gearing up several times but somehow remaining just out of sight. The main issue has been casting the central role, that of a cranky, alcoholic old man who receives a sweepstakes letter and thinks he’s hit the jackpot. He heads out on a road trip to claim his fortune, with his underachieving son tagging along.
Payne really wanted Gene Hackman to play the crotch pot, but Hackman has been retired for a while and couldn’t be convinced to come back to acting. Now Dern is top of the list for a role that has attracted plenty of interest for actors of the right age range. It’s also a good opportunity for Forte, who has struggled a little in his post SNL film career – while he’s snagged and worked well with some great supporting roles (and solid TV work on the likes of 30 Rock), his big shot at comedy stardom, MacGruber, fizzled at the box office.
No final deals have been made yet, but it’s the closest that Payne has come to getting the movie made so far, having re-written the script with Cedar Rapids’ Phil Johnston. But even if we have to wait a little longer for the ever-careful director to narrow down what he needs to make the film, it hopefully means less of a wait between his movies this time.

Source: EmpireOnline

Chris Pine Lines Up Mantivities

Chris Pine Lines Up Mantivities
He also co-wrote the comedy
Source: Deadline

Despite serving once more as the captain of the Enterprise for next year’s Star Trek sequel and lending his vocal chords to the new DreamWorks ‘toon Rise Of The Guardians, Chris Pine has also found time to write a comedy, Mantivities, which he’s planning to co-star in.
The film takes a look at a familiar theme: a group of friends in their early ‘30s who are all staunchly refusing to grow up, despite staring real life in the face. But they decide to band together to help one of their number mature in certain ways. Hilarity, we assume, ensues.
Pine scribbled the screenplay with friends Will Greenberg, Drew Howerton, Robert Baker, Ian Gotler and Tony Liebtrau, and with that many writers, we’re assuming they just took alternating words. “I couldn’t be happier to begin the adventure of making Mantivities knowing how much fun we all had writing it,” Pine says in a statement picked up by Deadline. “‘Somehow I get to laugh with my friends and call it work.” Michael Patrick Jann, who directed Drop Dead Gorgeous, is attached to call the shots.
As well as the new Trek film and Guardians (which arrives on our screens November 30), Pine will be seen in family drama People Like Us, which is out in the US on June 29, but has yet to set a UK date.

Source: EmpireOnline

Anthony Hopkins May Find Solace

Anthony Hopkins May Find Solace
Afonso Poyart in talks to direct
Source: Variety

Today has clearly been earmarked as the day for long-gestating projects to emerge blinking into the light. Following on from the news that Pierce Brosnan’s November Man has a likely start date and a director, Anthony Hopkins-starring supernatural drama Solace has Afonso Poyart in talks to take the helm.
Solace has bubbled along in various forms for years. Originally birthed as a spec script by Ocean Eleven’s Ted Griffin and Sean Bailey (who has long since moved on to become one of the big bosses at Disney) it was at one point considered as a possible sequel to Seven, with Morgan Freeman attached.
But the basic concept, which would see Hopkins as a psychic doctor working for the FBI and tracking a serial killer, has been through so many revisions since the early days that it’s no longer associated with the David Fincher classic. And various writers, including James Vanderbilt, have re-written it through the years.
The most recent draft is by Peter Morgan, and now Poyart may well be the man to finally bring it to the screen. When? That’s anyone’s guess: given the history of this one, we won’t expect it immediately. The Brazilian director is currently busy developing a remake of his action pic 2 Cohelhos (Two Rabbits) for Sony.

Source: EmpireOnline

Amy Adams Will Head To Dark Places

Amy Adams Will Head To Dark Places
She'll star in the thriller
Source: Variety

Amy Adams usually likes to mix up lighter material (such as The Muppets) with more dramatic work (The Fighter). She’ll definitely be headed down the latter route if she signs on to Dark Places.
Gilles Paquet-Brenner is attached to direct his script, which itself is adapted from Gillian Flynn’s book. The story digs deep into repressed memory and how events can be altered by the passage of time.
Adams will play a young woman whose family was murdered when she was seven. Back in the day, she pointed to her brother as the culprit, testifying against him in court. Now, 25 years later, a group obsessed with notorious crimes confronts her with some searching questions about what actually happened that day. Could the truth lie somewhere in between? We’re guessing yes, otherwise this will be a very short thriller.
Adams is in talks to star right now, and there is no start date listed for the indie pic. She’s just finished working on baseball drama Trouble With The Curve alongside Clint Eastwood and has On The Road, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master and a little art house pic called Man Of Steel already in the can. Up next on her schedule? Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze’s latest, still-untitled collaboration.

Source: EmpireOnline
