Mobile Legends Gagawing Pambansang Laro Ng Pilipinas

Ang mobile game na Mobile Legends ay gagawing "Pambansang Laro Ng Pilipinas" dahil daw sa dami ng Pilipinong naglalaro nito at wala na raw naglalaro ng patintero.

Ayon sa Historical Institute of the Philippines, mas marami ring naglalaro ng Mobile Legends kaysa basketball, volleyball, soccer at iba pang laro.

"Libu-libong Pilipino ang araw-araw na naglalaro ng Mobile Legends at maraming magagaling kaya iminungkahi ko sa aming kagawaran ang panukalang gawing pambansang laro ang Mobile Legends," ang sabi ni Theodore Agoncillo na kabilang sa Board of Directors ng ahensya. "Marami na rin tayong kababayan ang nagkampyon sa mga kumpetisyon sa labas ng bansa."

Dagdag pa ni Agoncillo, "Ang mga millenials ay di na naglalaro ng patintero at sa cellphones nalang nila naglalaro kaya di na ito angkop na tawaging pambansang laro sa panahon ngayon."

Agad naman raw na sumang-ayon ang iba pang kasapi ng departamento dahil sila rin daw ay naglalaro nito at dahil pino-promote ang kultura ng mga Pilipino sa pagdagdag kay Lapu-lapu bilang isa sa mga heroes na pwedeng gamitin sa laro.

Isa ang Mobile Legends sa e-sports na tampok sa gaganaping Southeast Asian Games dito sa Pilipinas ngayong taon.

Banned Mercury-Laden Skin Care Products Sold In Malls

Four banned skin whitening products are being illegally traded in at least two malls in Metro Manila, pro-environment and health group Ecowaste Coalition bared.

Ecowaste said the Pakistan-made products, which have been banned for containing dangerous levels of mercury, are openly sold in Baclaran Terminal Plaza Mall and Baclaran Bagong Milenyo Plaza for up to P300 each.

The group was able to buy the banned products from retailers inside the said malls and subsequently screened the items for mercury content using a handheld X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analytical device. The following were the results:

Parley Herbal Whitening Cream with 32,200 parts per million (ppm) of mercury,
Goree Beauty Cream with 21,700 ppm,
Goree Day & Night Whitening Cream with 17,800 ppm, and
Golden Pearl Beauty Cream with 10,000 ppm of mercury.

"We are dismayed by the nonstop and remorseless trade of unregistered skin lightening products from Pakistan containing extremely high levels of mercury way above the permissible limit of 1 part per million (ppm)," said Thony Dizon, Chemical Safety Campaigner, EcoWaste Coalition.

"Mercury, a highly toxic substance, is not permitted for use as an ingredient in cosmetic products such as skin whitening creams, lotions and soaps as per the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive. To protect human health and the environment, governments through the Minamata Convention on Mercury have targeted a global phase-out of skin whitening cosmetics with mercury above 1 ppm by 2020," he said.

Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an advisory regarding its banning of two products of Parley for exceeding the 1 ppm mercury level limit. It previously released similar advisories against the said Goree and Golden Pearl products.

According to the FDA, "Adverse health effects brought about by highly toxic mercury in cosmetic products include kidney damage, skin rashes, skin discoloration and scarring. Chronic use reduces the skin’s normal resistance to against bacterial and fungal infections. Other effects include anxiety, depression or psychosis and peripheral neuropathy."

"The transfer of mercury to fetuses of pregnant women may manifest as neuro-developmental deficits later in life," the FDA warned.

Sperm Whale With Plastics In Stomach Found Dead In Sarangani

A dead male pygmy sperm whale washed ashore in Barangay Maribulan, Alabel, Sarangani on Saturday morning and was found to have consumed several plastic items.

Wildlife officials from the Environmental Conservation and Protection Center-Sarangani (ECPC-Sarangani), who conducted a necropsy on the marine creature, said they were able to remove two plastic cups bearing the label of an Indonesian product called Ale-Ale, a plastic gum wrapper of local brand VFresh, a plastic lid cover and some pieces of a PVC pipe in the different compartments of the whale's stomach. One of the plastic cups impacted the opening of the intestine from the last stomach, ECPC-Sarangani said. (See photos of the plastic items HERE)

The team also discovered that the organism had eight cookie-cutter shark bites around its body that were shallow and that it had a number of ulcerations in one nematode-filled compartment of its stomach.

"These plastics may not be the sole cause of death but it is very clear that our plastic trashes get into the stomach of any marine wildlife." ECPC-Sarangani wrote in a Facebook post. "It cannot be deduced that the primary cause of death of this whale is the ingested plastic but finding these materials inside the stomach is very alarming."

This is yet another example of recent cases where dead whales wash ashore full of plastic in their stomachs, reminding us how critical plastic waste in the oceans has become. In November 2018, a dead sperm whale with 6 kilograms of plastic in its stomach washed up on a beach in Indonesia. Another sperm whale which ingested 29 kilograms of plastic trash was found washed ashore dead in Spain in February 2018.

American Singer Dedicates Song Titled 'The Most Beautiful People' To Filipinos

Filipinos are probably among the most hospitable people in the world. We often hear tourists saying what made their stay in the country more memorable were their interactions with the friendly locals. It is a known trait of Filipinos to be warm, welcoming and helpful to our guests, perhaps because we are thankful that they visited our country and we want their stay here to be as pleasant as possible.

Apart from being hospitable, Stephanie Lee, a singer-songwriter from the United States, observed more traits of Filipinos during her stay in the Philippines.

"The Filipino people are so happy!," she wrote in the caption of her Youtube video. "They walk around singing, they smile, they radiate joy! They don't have much but love life. I loved being in that atmosphere. They're truly kind."

The video features her singing a song she wrote which she titled "The Most Beautiful People." She said she dedicates the song to the Filipino people, especially those she met who "changed my life."

She added, "This is a song I wrote about how truly beautiful they are, inside and out. While we lived there they treated us so well. I already miss their smiles!"

The clip also shows pictures of the locals she met while in the country for over a year.

A 76-year-old farmer from Sagada, Mountain Province impressed her interviewer with her superb English speaking skills in a video that made the rounds on Facebook.

In the video's caption, digital content creators FYT said they were amazed by the spoken English ability of the grandma, who was not able to finish elementary school.

"Nosebleed kami habang ini-interview si Lola Erlinda Doyog, 76 years old, ng Pidlisan tribe sa Sagada, Mountain Province. Hindi raw siya nakapagtapos ng elementarya pero legit siyang Englisera," FYT wrote.

Lola Erlinda might have learned English from the American missionaries who established a mission compound in Sagada in the early 1900's. It is reportedly common to meet elderly locals who speak very fluent English in the area, which often surprises tourists as Sagada is considered remote in the context of the Philippines.

(Video) Man Survives Hours Lost At Sea By Turning Jeans Into Flotation Device

A German sailor spent more than three hours lost at sea after falling from a yacht last Thursday. Thanks to his quick thinking and his pair of jeans, which he turned into a flotation device, he was able to survive the ordeal.

"Without the jeans, I wouldn't be here today — they were really the thing that saved me," Arne Murke told the press after he was successfully rescued.

Murke, 30, had been sailing with his brother to deliver the yacht from New Zealand to Brazil when the mainsheet of the vessel suddenly came loose which caused the boom to swim around, knocking him overboard.

"I was floating in the water not wearing any life jacket," he said. "Just my T-shirt, my jeans, that was all."

"My brother started directly to get me, but the swell was like three meters. He threw a life jacket with a rope overboard. I couldn't reach that, it was already too far away. Then I think the motor exploded."

Fortunately, Murke remembered the Navy Seal technique of turning jeans into a life-saving buoyancy apparatus.

"I saw it many years ago, and I always thought, if I ever go overboard without a life jacket, I'm going to do that," he said.

"I took a deep breath, took out my jeans, made knots at the end of the legs and inflated the jeans — pull it over water and get air inside and then push it under water — I had like an improvised life vest."

Murke added that thinking about his 10-month-old daughter, who lives with his girlfriend in the Philippines, kept him going while lost at sea. He was rescued over 3 hours after the accident. Watch below a video of his rescue:

Rio Olympics Silver Medalist for Weightlifting Hidlyn Diaz was recently announced as the latest Under Armour Ambassador at the recent UA Circuit Challenge held at Robinson’s Magnolia last weekend.

The UA Circuit Challenge is a two-part event taking place at Greenbelt 3 on Saturday, March 4 at 1pm. It aims to be a preliminary event to help prepare the participants of the regional fitness challenge UA ‘Test of Will’, which is set to take place on March 25 & 26 at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City.

Whale Carcass Found In Dinagat Islands

A sea creature's carcass washed ashore at Barangay Poblacion in Cagdianao, Dinagat Islands on Wednesday, February 22.

According to Cagdianao's Municipal Information Office (MIO), the carcass has been confirmed by the local staff of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to be of a whale. A specimen sample has been brought to the BFAR office in Manila to determine the specie of the said whale.

The whale carcass was 6.3 meters long and 2 meters wide from its dorsal to pectoral fins, MIO reported.

MIO added that the local government unit will be preserving the bones of the whale as memento of the rare event.

Filipino actor Paolo Ballesteros won the award for "Best Actor" at the 2016 Tokyo International Film Festival on Thursday.

The award is for Ballesteros' role as a transgender woman named Trisha in the movie "Die Beautiful." In his acceptance speech, he said he was surprised about the award and thought he was only attending the red carpet event for the closing ceremony of the festival, which celebrates its 29th edition this year. He also thanked the organizers for "embracing our film."

"Die Beautiful" also received the "Audience Choice" award. Directed by Jun Robles Lana, the movie centers around Trisha, who makes a living by joining beauty pageants. She unexpectedly dies while being crowned in a beauty contest. Before she died, her one last wish was to be presented as a different celebrity on each night of her wake. However, her conservative father wants to bury her as a man so her friends are left with no choice but to steal her body and hold the wake in a secret location. While they transform her to look like different celebrities, they look back at the colorful and extraordinary life that she has led - being a son, a sister, a mother, a friend, a lover, a wife, and ultimately, a queen.

Blind Filipina Gets Standing Ovation, Makes Judge Cry On 'France's Got Talent'

A blind Filipino woman received a standing ovation and made one of the judges cry during her audition in the latest season of "France's Got Talent".

Alienette Coldfire, whose real name is Katchry Jewel Golbin, chose to sing the French version of the "Les Miserables" piece "I Dreamed A Dream" for her audition, which was aired on Tuesday. Her beautiful and emotional rendition of the song swept the judges off their feet, with one of them reduced to tears. The judges then gave her their nods to send her to the next round of the competition.

When asked how she learned French, Coldfire, who hails from Capiz, said her friends taught her the language for about three years.

"I learned with my friends through the Internet," she said. "When I heard Edith Piaf's 'La Vie en rose,' I wanted to understand the lyrics. That's how I learned French."

The 25-year-old Pinay also said that she joined the competition to prove that physical impairment is not a hindrance for anyone to do great things.

Another Filipina has bagged the Miss International crown.

Kylie Verzosa, 24, was named winner of the Miss International 2016 pageant on Thursday in Tokyo, Japan, besting 69 lovely ladies from around the world.

The Baguio City-born preschool teacher and model is the 6th representative from the Philippines who won the beauty pageant. She now joins the ranks of Filipino Miss International winners Bea Alonzo (2013), Precious Lara Quigaman (2015), Melanie Marquez (1979), Aurora Pijuan (1970), and Gemma Teresa Cruz (1964).

The Philippine team dominated the premiere men's doubles event at this year's King's Cup Sepaktakraw World Championship in Thailand, clinching the country's first ever gold medal in the decades old annual competition.

Striker Rheyjey Ortouste led his team to victory against the Myanmar team, the SEA Games 2015 gold medalist, during the final round on Friday, scoring 35 points, 15 of which he harvested during the crucial third set. He and his teammates earlier beat the Thais, who are currently ranked number 1 worldwide.

The Philippine team also bagged the silver medal in men's hoop event and the bronze medal in women's hoop category, making this year their best performance in the international tilt ever.

The RP team was comprised of Rheyjey Ortouste, Ronsited Gabayeron, Jason Huerte, Emmanuel Escote, John Jeffery Morcillos, John Bobier, Reznan Pabriga, Mark Joseph Gonzales, JC Lee, Joeart Jumawan, Rhemwil Catana, Alvin Pangan, Desiree Autor, Gelyn Evora, Mary Ann Lopez, Rizzalyn Amolacion, Josefina Maat and Kristel Carloman.

A Beijing employer is kissing his female staff every morning as part of the routine in his company, Chinese media reported.

Everyday, at around 9:00am, female employees queue up to receive a kiss on the lips from their boss.

According to reports, the man created the rule in order to "foster good relationships among colleagues." He claims that he got the idea from an American firm that does the same practice.

The businessman said he and his workers became more united because of the morning kisses.

A Huffington Post contributor has named Davao City as one of the top 3 Southeast Asian cities where it is best to invest in real estate.

In the blog section of the popular news website, business writer Lisa Froelings said the property market in Davao is "not yet saturated" as compared to Manila and therefore, "there is room for growth." She also cited the local government as being active in its developmental projects which is attractive to both local and foreign investors.

Froelings also considered Davao's low cost of living as well as the Philippines having "the highest yields for property investments in the ASEAN."

"With both affordable prices as well as high yields, investors can easily tell that Davao is a great place to invest in property right now," wrote Froelings, who is also an eCommerce consultant.

The other ASEAN cities in the list are Chiang Mai in Thailand and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia.

Catriona Gray Is Miss World Philippines 2016

Albayanon beauty Catriona Gray charmed the judges' hearts to win the Miss World Philippines 2016 crown on Sunday evening.

The 22-year-old Filipino-Australian model also received several special awards including the Best in Swimsuit, Best in Long Gown, Best in Fashion Runway, Miss Hannah and Miss Manila Hotel awards.

During the Q&A, the Top 5 contestants were asked why they should be Miss World Philippines. Below was Gray's answer:

"To be a Miss World is to be passed a torch that burns with passion and purpose. If I am to become Miss World Philippines, I will dedicate my voice and essence to carry that torch and to set charitable causes alight, such as my personal advocacy, the Paraiso Bright Beginnings Project. And I would focus on passing on this torch to empower others because I believe together there is no darkness in this world that our light cannot overcome."

Gray will be representing the Philippines in Miss World 2016 pageant which will be held in the United States in December.

Apart from being a commercial model, the new Miss World Philippines is also a budding songwriter and singer and runs her own business.

Rachelle Ann Go To Play Gigi In Broadway Revival Of 'Miss Saigon'

Rachelle Ann Go will be joining the cast of the Broadway return of the legendary musical "Miss Saigon."

The 30-year-old Filipina singer and actress will be reprising her acclaimed performance as Gigi Van Tranh in the West End revival of the musical, for which she received the "Best Supporting Actress in A Musical" at last year's What's On Stage Awards.

Also part of the Broadway cast are Devin Ilaw, who will play the role of Thuy; Jon Jon Briones, who will act as the Engineer; and Eva Noblezada, who will play as Kim.

The opening night of the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon will be on March 23rd.

Filipina Wins Vietnam Idol 2016

A 28-year-old OFW was named the winner of the seventh season of "Vietnam Idol" on Friday.

Janice Phuong, who hails from Dauis, Bohol, received 54.24% of the public votes, storming the victory ahead of the other grand finalist Viet Thang.

For winning the singing competition, she took home the PhP1.29 million (VnD600 million) cash prize.

This season marks the first time that the show opened its doors to foreigners living in Vietnam, making Phuong its first non-Vietnamese winner.

Phuong went to Vietnam in 2009 to work as a bar singer. She later married a Vietnamese musician.

Fluent in Vietnamese, the Filipina sang English and Vietnamese songs in the show.

The temblor, which was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 11km, hit at 10:29PM and was felt at the following intensities:

Junior New System Named Grand Champion At WCOPA 2016

Filipino dance group Junior New System made the Philippines proud once again after winning the highest award in their category at this year's World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) held this week in Long Beach, California, USA.

The hip-hop crew bagged the "2016 Senior Dance Group of the World" and the "2016 Senior Grand Champion Performer of the World" awards during the finale of the annual international competition. They took home a prize package worth $7,500.

Last year, Junior New System made noise in Asia after making it to the grand finals of "Asia's Got Talent." The boys have been performing around the country and abroad after their "Got Talent" stint. They also received the "Best Dance Company" award at the 2015 Aliw Awards.

Jaclyn Jose Wins Best Actress At Cannes Film Festival 2016

Jaclyn Jose received the "Best Actress" award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival for her role in the Filipino film "Ma'Rosa."

Helmed by prolific Filipino director Brillante Mendoza, "Ma'Rosa" tells the story of a couple who owns a sari-sari store and moonlights as drug dealers in a poor neighborhood in Manila. It is the 4th Cannes entry of Mendoza, who won the award for "Best Director" at the said festival in 2009 for his film "Kinatay." In 2015, Mendoza's movie "Taklub" was given the "Ecumenical Jury-Prize Special Mention" award.

LET Results 2016: PRC Releases Teachers Board Exam Result

The March 2016 LET results have been released by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

LET Results 2016: PRC Releases Teachers Board Exam Result

According to the PRC, a total of 12,128 out of 42,739 examinees (28.38%) successfully passed in the elementary level, while 18,810 out of 53,090 examinees (35.43%) successfully passed in the secondary level.

The Licensure Examination for Teachers, otherwise known as the Teachers Board Exam, was given last March 20, 2016 in various testing centers across the country.

The PRC said online registration for the issuance of Professional Identification Card (ID) and Certificate of Registration will take place on May 30 - June 2, 2016 (Elementary) and June 3 - June 10, 2016 (Secondary).

The dates and venues for the oathtaking ceremonies of the new successful LET exam takers are yet to be announced.

Cyrus Villanueva Spends Vacation In The Philippines

"The X Factor Australia" winner Cyrus Villanueva is currently in the Philippines.

The 19-year-old singer is spending a vacation in his father's hometown, Davao City. His social media posts suggest that he flew to the country over the weekend and went to an island-hopping tour in Samal Island on Monday.

One photo he posted on Instagram shows him playing hoops with his father, while another shows him enjoying a glass of mango shake. He also shared a picture of jeepneys, as well as, a photo him in the back of a truck with his cousins.

In his latest Facebook post, Villanueva said he will be taking a flight back to Australia, tomorrow.

Villanueva won the seventh season of "The X Factor Australia," last year. In December, he released his self-titled debut studio album which features the songs he performed during the show and his winning single, "Stone." The album, which peaked at number 9 at the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Charts, sold over 35,000 copies, receiving Gold certification.

Lukas Janisch Wins 'The Voice Kids Germany'

Lukas Janisch emerged as the winner of the third season of "The Voice Kids Germany."

The 13-year-old Filipino-Austrian topped the public vote during the show's finale on Friday night (Saturday morning in the Philippines), taking home the title as "The Voice Kids Germany" champion and the grand prize in the process. His prize includes a training grant worth 15,000 euros and a record deal.

During the finale, which was opened by popular British singer Birdy, the Top 6 contestants performed a solo and also sang with their coaches. Their coaches later chose one to represent their teams in the Top 3. After the Top 3 finalists' performances, the audience and viewers were then asked to vote for the winner. The show ended with the announcement of Lukas Janisch as the victor.

Lukas Janisch and his family reside in Furstenfeld, Austria where his father is from. His mom is a native of Palompon, Leyte in the Philippines.
