Jan. Meeting minutes, meeting reminder

Another reminder that tomorrow night, Feb. 13th, is our regular monthly meeting. I have included the meeting minutes from our January meeting for your review. Please provide any corrections at tomorrow's meeting.

NSA Meeting

Meeting called to order at 7pm by Bill Bonham, President.

Visitors welcomed.

Comments regarding Christmas dinner all positive.

Bill Bonham, President, questioned those present regarding receipt of e-mails and reminded members of the blog being a wonderful way to keep current on information plus alert others to your new information.

Loyd Fannin , Treasurer, reported a balance of $8322.75.

NSA show site for 2012 lacking. Many former sites have already been booked. Discussion ensued considering possibility on-line entry show instead of physical site. Several positive comments including fact the show would be online for an entire year. Suggestion of winning artwork having a small venue appearance was proposed. Possibility of judging by well-known (other than local artist) plus tremendous savings in time and effort to members with on-line show could be realized. Cost to NSA would be approximately $700-$800 for on-line show.

LSAG show proposed before end of March also is lacking physical presentation space. Several possibilities brought forward. Members were reminded by Bill Bonham, President, that the help of all is needed to scout out a possibility and report to the leadership their findings.

Up date and Plein Air painting

Hello artist friends,

Monday, Feb 13th will be our regular NSA meeting at the Clear Lake Community Center, 5001 NASA Highway, that is on the lake side of the park area. The presenter will be Lisette McClung, She is an art teacher at Clear Lake ISD and her demo will be an introduction to Plein Air painting. Jim Bragg and I will also be showing our Plein Air rigs and talking about the surging popularity of this area of painting.

We will also have the prospectus for our LSAG show in March and an update on our national show.

You know the routine, bring some goodies to munch on, something to drink, an art friend that you have been wanting to invite to our great meetings. Be there early to help setup and get ready for another excursion into the world of art.

Speaking about plein air, it's Saturday again and we will be meeting at the Kemah Farmers Market across the street from T-Bone Tom's restaurant on highway 146 at 9:30 A.M. Come out and watch, sketch, take photos, paint and enjoy the cool clear morning.

There will be no plein air scheduled this week, Feb 4th. Looks like the weather is going to be cloudy with rain possibilities.

A reminder that the Galveston Art League artist reception will be this Saturday from 6 until 8:00 P.M. We have a number of NSA members who have entered the show, hope you will come out and support them.

Registration Friday, March 9^th, from 12:00. to 5 pm.

Saturday, March 10^th, from 8:30 am. to 10:30 am.

Note: artists must provide their own floor or table top easel for displaying their work.

Presentation Show opens to participating artists and the public March 10^th from 1:30 P.M. to 5 P.M.

Awards Awards will be made March 10th at 2 P.M.

Judge Cheryl Evans - received her Master’s Degree in Humanities in 1982 from the University of Houston Clear Lake. She is a passionate art educator who has taught for 33 years on the junior high, high school and college level. She has received numerous awards for her teaching, and was awarded a lifetime achievement award in 2005 by the Texas Art Education Association when they inducted her into the TAEA Fellows.

She is a producing watercolorist, and holds signature status in the Watercolor Art Society of Houston. Evans continues to teach painting workshops around the state. Her work is in numerous corporate and private collections in Texas and across the country.

Wow, another week has flown by and it becomes more difficult to keep information current.

We are working on the prospectus for our third annual "Spring into Art Show" on March 9th and 10th. We should have all of the details for you at our next meeting which will be February 13th.

Our demo will be Lisette McClung on Plein air painting.

Speaking of plein air, we will return to Armand Bayou tomorrow at 9:00 A.M. We've had some good rain and the ponds should be up to normal levels. Tomorrow evening is ARTWALK in Galevston and if you have never been to an ARTWALK give it a try.

Hi friends,

I am a featured artist at Eiband’s Emporium this Art Walk in Galveston. It was very last minute, and I don’t have photos or ads to show you. I have a 25 foot long wall with 16 framed paintings and a canvas rack for matted work on sale. These pieces have all been priced low for the show. If you come down to the Art Walk this Saturday, please stop by. My good friend Suzanne Peterson has her wonderful paintings there, and will greet my friends until I can get there. It is located right in the center of all the Post Office art sites.

NSA LSAG Show - plein air Saturday

The Kenah City Council approved our application for free use of Kemah Community Center on March 9th and 10th. We will be sending out the event prospectus in the next few days. We recognize that the 10th is an ARTWALK weekend in Galveston, but our show should be over in time for anyone who needs or wants to be in Galveston that evening. Please mark your calender for this important show.

Plein air is scheduled for Armand Bayou this weekend.( 21st.) I will not be able to attend but Jim Bragg will be painting. I'm scheduled to be at the AAW show in Houston. Our show opens at Jomar Visions Gallery, 902 Hardy Street at 12:00 noon.

Good news, Jim Bragg has submitted our application for the Kemah Community Center for our annual "Spring Into Art" LSAG qualifier show. For new members, it is necessary to win a position in a division at a local show to qualify for convention competition. The date tentatively is March 9th and 10th, so plan your calendar accordingly. As soon as the request is confirmed by the Kemah city administration, we will forward the prospectus for the event.

Happy New Year Artist Friends.

The new year bring exciting opportunities. We start the new year with and exciting new demo with Martha Terrill presenting Assemblage Art. You know the drill, Monday evening, Jan. 9th, 7:00 P.M. at 5001 NASA Road at Clear Lake Comunity Center (lake side) come early help with set up, bring some good eats, invite an artist friend and enjoy the evening.

Looks like the weather will be fine for our first plein air outing of the new year. We will meet Saturday, Jan. 7th at 9:00 A.M. Walter Hall Park, located at 807 Highway 3 North in League City. Hope to see you there.

Martha is interested in disparate objects, and in her assemblages, she explores the relationship between preciousness – that which is held dear – and garbage – that which is cast away. I'm confident that you'll find new inspiration when you see her creations.

Art Class for your child at Texas Art Supply in Clear Lake

In January Elizabeth Cencini will be holding art classes for kids ans adults at the Texas Art Supply in Clear Lake . Texas Art is located in the Bay Brook Shopping mall parking lot just behind Dillard’s. Class begins January 29. This class is a Sunday class.

Art Class for kids: ages 3-12. Get all the hands down instruction for making a painting. We will work on landscapes, florals, painting people, faces, animals and more! We will also work with sculpture with clay! We will draw, use pencil colors, use watercolors and acrylics. Each month the medium we use will be different.

This class is up to 2 full hours of instruction. This class does not include materials.

Just learned that Gay Paratore also did a Christmas ball for the tree at the state capitol. Here is her information.

Gay Paratore was asked to design an ornament for the Texas State Christmas Tree by District 29 representative, Randy Weber. If you go to the web site and scroll down to # 29 you can see her collage of things that represent that district. Gay lives in Santa Fe and it is in district 29.

Well the Christmas holiday is just around the corner and I'm sure many of you are hurrying and scurrying around to finish your shopping or planing for family get-to-gethers.

Wow, what a great Party we had on Monday night, the food was fantastic, the white elephant gift exchange was fun and it seemed to me that everyone enjoyed themselves,

I received the following email from Jackie Liddell and thought you would be interested in her accomplishments.

I was asked to decorate the Texas Capital tree ornament for our district. I didn’t have but a couple of days to get it done, and I wanted to put little paintings inside instead of on top…

I don’t like the photos taken of it, due to the glare on the glass ball.

Doug Hiser One man show at Tommy's Oyster Bar restaurant and Art Gallery, 2225 Bay Area Boulevard. A reception to meet the artist will be held Monday, December 5, 2011, from 5 pm until 6:30 pm. Hello Artists.

The time is rapidly approaching for our deadline ft make your reservation for the Christmas/meeting/party.The cost is $10 per person and we must tell the caterer the number to prepare for by December 5th. You may pay the night of the party but we must have your reservation before hand. Don't expect that we will provide extra in the event you decide at the last moment to attend. There will be a "white elephant" gift exchange, suggest a $10 value bring a wrapped gift if you wish to participate. We are suggesting art related items.

This was a great event last year and I hope you will plan on attending.

A great meeting last night

Hello Artists.

Wow, If you missed the meeting last night, you missed an opportunity of a lifetime. Our guest presenter was the internationally recognized artist Vie Dunn-Harr. During the 90 minute presentation in oil, she shared her approach to generating her bold and exciting art.

One of the points of discussion during the refreshment intermission had to do with our meeting place. What are we doing to get closer to being central to our membership? Actually, we are now more central to our members than in the past few years, part of which is due to the addition of new members. It would have been difficult to accommodate the crowd we had at last nights meeting if we were still at our old location.

If you did not make your reservation for the Christmas party next month please email or phone me with your needs, remember $10/ person which you will owe even if you change your plans. We have to pay for the total we reserve. This will be a catered event at our regular meeting time on December 12th. You may also send your payment to our mail box at P.O. Box 1885, Dickinson, TX 77539. Your reservation must be received by Dec. 7th.

We are making progress on our show plans and will have more definitive information in the next few weeks.

Monday evening is our regular monthly meeting and our guest presenter is Internationally recognized artist Vie Dunn-Harr. She will be demonstrating in oil on canvas and will share the creative process in which she works. She teaches one or two workshops in the Houston area annually. She presently exhibits in Pacific Crest Gallery, Lake Tahoe, CA – Key West Gallery, Key West, FL – Dolphin Galleries, Kahului, HI – Bronze Frog Gallery, Oakville, ON Canada – Just for You Fine Art Gallery, Healdsburg, CA – ArtMatters, New Braunfels, TX.

We are anticipating higher than usual attendance so please be on time and don't forget to bring some wonderful creations for our refreshment table.

Another important subject is our Christmas Party which we be on our regular meeting date of December 12. The party will be catered and the cost will be $10 per person. We will be accepting your payment and reservation at the Monday night meeting. If you are not able to be at the meeting, send your reservation by email to me and be prepared to pay at the party. Please note; if you reserve a space you will be required to make the payment even if your plans for attending change.

TREASURER REPORT

Loyd Fannin reports balance of $12,380.02. Recent purchase of projector for $500 not included in the balance.

SLIDE SHOW using the new projector commenced of works accepted for the National Society of Artists show in October. Susan Pinkerton was thanked and recognized for compiling C.D. of approved artists works for the NSA show in October.

We received the following from Doug Hiser and Congratulations are in order.

November 9-10 atMoody Gardens is the annual Texas Art Educators Agency Art Teacher conference and about 3000 art teachers from the state of Texas are involved. The Art Show competition is open to all teachers and each educator submits up to 5 pieces of art in 2-D or 3-D.

I just found out with the 4 cash awards, display on a large screen at the conf and display on the TAEA website--I Won Third place 2-D with my ink, King of the Cape-(African Cape Buffalo). Thanks! Doug Hiser

National Show closing

Friday and Saturday is pick up your art from the National Show. Jim Bragg and volunteers will be packaging out of town entries for shipment both days. We still need some help so if you are coming to pick up please consider staying around and asking Jim if he needs any help.

With the National Show closing and the quarterly LSAG meeting in Richmond, there will be no scheduled plein air activities this Saturday. We will be back at Maas Nursery the following Saturday which will be Nov. 5th.

I'm working on a painting and drawing plein air competition in the Spring. It will probably be an open 2 day activity with awards tentatively sponsored by the Dickinson Historical Society. Will have more on this later.

Just a quick note to tell you we will be painting en plein air tomorrow Oct. 22, at Maas Nursery. 5511 Todville Road, Seabrook, Texas 77586. It's going to be a beautiful day and a unique venue for painting.

Remember, you do not need to be a painter to come out, you can sketch, photograph or just watch and learn.

October l5 from 4-7, Bayway Homes is having an Open House, Home Tour and Ribbon Cutting. There will be music, wine tasting, hord'oeurves, door prizes and more. Six of us artists from Island Furniture and Art Gallery will be showing our work. We each have a bedroom in which to show. It will be at 2 homes (like beachouses) located at the corner of Todville & Hammer Street.
