Imagine two young boys. One has visited a nudist club many times with his family, the other may have only rarely seen a parent unclothed, and they may have seemed embarrassed when that happened. The non-nudist boy says to his friend, "Look what I've found!" as he shows the nudist kid a copy of Playboy or some similar magazine, which he found somewhere.

As they look at the pictures of scantily clothed, erotically posed women, the boy who has seen hundreds of people of all ages and body types, will probably think, "I've seen lots of naked people before. Why does he want to sneak looks at this?" He might also think, "This isn't even what most people look like."

Interesting Facts About Nudist Families

Surveys show that overall, adults who were reared as nudists think of their childhoods as having been stable. They also find that nudists tend to be very slightly better educated than their non-nudist peers.

The divorce rate is lower among nudist families, and their children tend to make better grades than similar children in non-nudist families. I don't think that this is BECAUSE the families are nudists; it's more likely that the marriages are more stable AND their kids make good grades AND the families are nudists because the family members tend to communicate a little more openly with each other in their daily lives.

The club (Corio Valley Nudist Club) was established in 1962 and is situated on its own grounds of around 70 acres of bushland bordering the Brisbane Ranges National Park. Offended by Nude People?

If you are learning about nude recreation, you may have heard about how nudists come in all shapes, size, colors and ages. Yes, tou will fit in no matter what you look like. Yet, some of you may be worried about being offended by what you'll see - by what other people look like. I can assure you, what other people look like is a non-issue.

Some reasonable questions by someone new to nude recreation:

* Will I see someone much older or younger than I am?
* Will I see someone much larger or smaller than I am?
* Will I be offended by seeing different kinds of people, people different from me, nude?

Yes, you will see people different from you. The amazing part is that you are unlikely to be offended. Contrary to everything you imagined you knew about the human body in all its shapes and forms, real life is much different.

Like a doctor, I've now seen most every body type, shape, size and age in natural, nude states. Like a doctor, I am neither shocked nor offended. Looking at a body is like looking at a face. A face "just is". A face is human. Except, I'm not a doctor. I've been a nudist for a handful of years.

The "context" of the environment changes how you see people. Being younger than 80 or 90% of the people at nudist resorts and beaches, I have been surprised at how normal, natural and un-shocking it is to see someone, say an 80 year old woman, nude in her natural state. It goes against everything I thought I knew prior to trying nude recreation.

Why is this so?

My guess is that it is human instinct. I "feel" no different seeing this women nude than I would if I just saw her face while she was clothed. Strange, isn't it?

Imagine going to the zoo and seeing all of the different animals naked. There are zebras and gorillas and tigers and giraffes. The animals are natural. Seeing humans in their natural state "feels the same". Does that make sense?

Take a look at this small picture of a nudist couple's backsides (butts!). It's a picture on the American Association for Nude Recreation's website. The couple are no supermodels by any means. They are real people. Middle-aged, imperfect, natural.

I have a feeling that if you try nude recreation, you'll have this same experience within minutes after being nude around a lot of other people.

Besides the freedom and comfort of being without clothes in a natural state, the experience of being nude around other people in a safe, non-gawking environment creates a new appreciation of human-ness. An un-learning happens.

The truth is that how people look is irrelevant. We all age. We all have different shapes and sizes and imperfections. Hiding these imperfections behind cloth seems to be more restrictive than liberating.

Nude recreation frees your body from clothing and at the same time, frees your mind.

My Day as a Nudist

(Newser) – Emily Yoffe had already posed naked for a group of art students, so why not visit a nudist camp on behalf of her Human Guinea Pig column, in which she tries things the rest of us want to know about, but are too scared to do. "You've already crossed that line. Now live the lifestyle!" her editor gleefully instructs her. And the nudists certainly make it sound fun: "As the gate to a nudist club closed behind me, more than my clothes would fall away," she writes on Slate. "I would experience a relaxation so profound by being around lots of other naked people that my vacation would have double the stress relief of a regular vacation."

What actually happens: She attempts to "act nonchalant" while staring at the penis of the man who checks her in; chats with naked people while watching her "pale flesh quiver every time I made a gesture" in the reflection of their sunglasses; goes on a naked tour; and discovers that she actually enjoys driving naked. Her foray into nudity ends with a naked tropical dinner, where she learns that "It turns out that a man in a Hawaiian shirt below which his genitals dangle is a much more disturbing sight than a fully naked man." Her conclusion? "Other naked people don't relax me. I had read that some nudists call people who prefer clothes 'textilists,' and I am one."

What is the difference between a nudist club and a resort?

A resort is a business in which you pay a daily fee to visit and
use the resorts facilities. Some resorts have a yearly fee
structure and generally speaking you don't have any say in
the running of the resort.
A club is member owned and as such members have a say in the day to day running of the club. Clubs are run by elected committees. Members of Rosco pay a yearly fee to belong and can visit as many times in that year as they wish.

Rosco is a member owned and family oriented nudist club located in the Hunter Valley region of NSW, Australia.
Our nearest major town is Toronto. Rosco is situated on 16 hectares (40 acres) in the beautiful Watagan ranges.

Rosco has two clubhouses that can easily cater for the
numerous social functions that are run throughout the
year. These social functions range from discos, bands,
trivia nights, carpet bowls, communal teas, damper
cooking nights, fancy dress nights as well as concerts
conducted by the Rosco theatre group.

At Rosco not all of our activities are restricted to club
grounds as we also conduct nude swim nights at a swim and leisure centre as well as tours to free beaches, other clubs and resorts.

Going Nude is Cool

So many people are jealous of my great job. My bosses, Tom & Mary Clare Mulhall are mentoring me so that I will become a business leader in the hospitality and nude recreation industry. Tom and his wife have taught me so much that not only am I the youngest manager (22 years old) of a clothing optional resort in the U.S., but that I am also the youngest manager of ALL of Palm Springs.

The Terra Cotta Inn is unique in that we understand the needs of younger couples trying nude recreation for the first time or the younger experienced nudists. Our motto is "Only nice customers are booked here, Grouchy people are never allowed" (smile). Nice people always have a fantastic time and that is why our repeat guest rate is so high.

Not only are we considered one of the nicest clothing optional resorts in the U.S., but we are also considered one of the nicest of all resorts. Last September, the Chicago Tribune newspaper selected us as one of the top 10 BEST clothing optional resorts in the world. Then in November, the Vancouver Sun Newspaper in Canada selected us as the BEST clothing optional resort in the States. We had Phoenix's City Magazine select us as one of the top 10 BEST of ALL resorts in the whole west from Seattle to Santa Fe. And Arizona Republic Newspaper of Phoenix selected us as "Palm Springs' Best Hideaway". We had CBSmarketwatch.com report on our being the most mainstream clothing optional resort in the U.S. And on May 13th, 2002, Newsweek Magazine in a 10 page article about the BEST small businesses in the U.S. called "Small Business, Big Results," started off the article with us. They wrote a 3/4 page feature article called "Size Matters: Small is Good." My boss even had his bare butt in Newsweek. So it is really cool that nudists get to stay at one of the BEST resorts in the U.S.

The major reason more young women are not comfortable with nude sunbathing in public is that they rarely are exposed to the concept that it is OK to be nude in a nonsexual way. I am a Latina. In my culture all women are considered beautiful. We are not brought up to be ashamed of our bodies like in many other countries. Latina's are strong women. Be proud thay you have the courage to go nude. Enjoy the freedom of being clothes free like me. I want young women to feel as comfortable as I do walking around naked. By taking off your clothes, you are taking off all your worries. This is why everyone is so nice here.

As you become comfortable talking to others while you have no clothes on, this confidence carries over to everyday life.

The more people see nude men and women tastefully portrayed enjoying nude sunbathing, the more resorts and beaches will be respected in society.

Remember, going nude is cool so if I can do it, you can do it too!

As the name suggests – the track takes you to what we call the Top Falls and the rockpool. Please be careful at the rockpool, as the rocks become rather slippery when wet or if you get your shoes wet. Rather pleasant after a long walk on a hot summers day!

Naturally the water flow over the falls is related to how much rain we have had (or these days haven't had!)...

Why Be a Nudist?

Nudism has a stigma of being a bit naughty and taboo, but in reality, it is the most natural lifestyle that is still available to man. If people could look past the stereotypes and judgments, they could see that nudism carries numerous benefits with it.

Life without clothing is just simpler. Nudists do not have to suffer with an outlandish laundry bill. They don’t have to worry about their expensive clothes fading tearing, or becoming stained. If someone is a nudist, they don’t have to waste all that time deciding what to wear.

While a full nudist life would be ideal in terms of cutting out a hassle of life, most people have to be pleased with visiting a nudist resort to get their fill of these benefits. Several other benefits are exclusive to these types of vacations. For example, aside from the time spent off the resort when coming and going, no clothes are needed which drastically cuts down the amount of luggage that is needed. ‘Nudism’; now there’s a word that brings some lovely images to mind! Seriously though, as sexy as the word sounds, nudism is actually not about sex at all but rather a natural way of living. Yes, nudists like to walk around naked and yes, they do so regardless of the sex of those around them, but unless you really understand nudism then you are likely going to have certain…misconceptions about it to say the least.

First, let me explain why nudists do what they do, in simple terms that you’ll understand without having to consult the nudism bible. **Note: That was a joke! They don’t have a special bible silly!!**

Nudism which is also known as naturism is considered to be a lifestyle based on a very natural health premise that goes back centuries. Today, there is a strong emphasis on what nudism does for a person’s body image and self esteem as well, based on the fact that by being naked in the presence of others that you are able to let go of any misconceptions or distorted messages and expectations that you have as far as the media’s portrayal of what we should look like. It helps people to feel less self conscious about their bodies and in turn be more accepting of themselves as well as others for who they are and not what everyone else expects them to be.

Nudists don’t just wander the streets naked without any concern for those around them, which alone should make you wonder about any negative things that nay-sayers may…well…nay say about nudists. They do not break the law and they are not on a mission to offend or impose their beliefs and lifestyle on anyone unwilling. They are happy to agree that it is a personal choice and do not go around attempting to recruit! Nudists limit their naked time to the privacy of their own homes or to nudist resorts, functions, cruises, beaches, etc. They have organizations around the world of other nude-minded people who plan events and offer suggestions of places that are clothing-optional or clothing-free.

Another thing that most don’t realize about nudists is that they consist of families and people of every age and race. It really is a family affair as most people who believe in naturism go on to raise the children the same way. For those families, they are comfortable being naked around one another and participating in everyday activities in the buff without any qualms. And if you were to go to a nude beach or resort, you would find families and everyday people like you and me going about their business; swimming, talking and playing games—only naked.

Whatever your take on nudism, you can’t deny that promoting self-acceptance and a positive body image is a great thing, especially given today’s pressure to be ultra buff or stick thin…with large boobs…and perfect hair.

bullet Federal law: No federal US federal law that either allows or prohibits nudity. The courts have not ruled whether the right to engage in naturism is guaranteed by the Constitution under its freedom of expression provision. Thus, the legality of various forms of undress is currently left up to the individual states and localities to decide. Nudity is generally allowed in some areas of some national parks, unless local laws have overriding jurisdiction.

In 1981 (Schad v. Borough of Mount Ephraim, 452 U.S. 61, 65-66), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on nudity, as it appears in movies, plays and TV. They found that: "Entertainment, as well as political and ideological speech, is protected; motion pictures, programs broadcast by radio and television, and live entertainment, such as musical and dramatic works, fall within the First Amendment guarantee ... Nor may an entertainment program be prohibited solely because it displays the nude human figure. 'Nudity alone' does not place otherwise protected material outside the mantle of the First Amendment." This might be interpreted as protecting a naturist's right to engage in a nude demonstration or public performance on a beach. But the ruling does not appear to cover simple nudism.

A photograph of nudists might be considered an innocent picture by some people, an erotic photo by others, and pornography by still others. U.S. law restricts, and in some cases criminalizes, child pornography. Included are books, magazines, periodicals, films, video tapes. Child pornography is carefully defined in federal law as "any visual depiction, if—
(A) the producing of such visual depiction involves the use of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct; and
(B) such visual depiction is of such conduct." 4
bullet State laws: In Alabama, a law is on the books which prohibits lobbying in behalf of nudism. It is clearly unconstitutional and could not withstand a court challenge. The law is not being enforced at this time.
bullet Local laws: A referendum in Newport, Maine, was conduced at the time of the 1998-NOV-3 elections. It would have asked selectmen in the city to ban the display of "female breasts ... visible from a public way." The proposal was defeated. The vote was triggered by complaints about a resident mowing her lawn while topless.

Canada: Two federal laws (Section 173 and 174 of the Criminal Code) apply across the country.
bullet Section 173 prohibits "indecent acts" done either:
bullet in a public place, or
bullet in any place, if done with the intent to "insult or offend"

It also forbids "exposure of genital organs" for a "sexual purpose" to someone under the age of 14. As is common Canadian practice, Parliament leaves the exact definition of these terms up to courts to decide. Various Provincial courts have decided that:
bullet simple nude sunbathing is not indecent.
bullet streaking is not prohibited under the law.
bullet the inside of a car can be a public place if it is viewable from the street.
bullet the doorway of a home can be a public place.

bullet Section 174 prohibits being "so clad as to offend against public decency or order" while exposed to public view. Courts have decided that nude swimming is not within the range of this law. This section seems to have been used mainly against nude and semi-nude performances in commercial establishments.

How do you feel about nudity between parent/child of the same gender?

Today, I was laying out on my back patio sunbathing nude. No one was home but my stepdaughter, she was 6 and sat out there with me and decided to sunbathe nude as well and I thought it was so cute and had no trouble. I mentioned it to my mom and she said if someone had seen they might have called the law because it may have looked perverted. Personally, I feel nothing about it is wrong. I don't believe nudity equals sex and anyone who does is perverted and sick.

I have showered and changed in front of my stepdaughter before. Its not like I parade myself nude around my house but I feel its perfectly alright because we are both females and nothing is being done that is wrong. I know some ultra conservatives think this is just horrible and shouldn't be done.

Although, generally only Americans feel its wrong anyhow, Europeans do this sort of think often and don't blink an eye because of the better education and they know nudity do sent equal sex.

I was just trying to get an opinion? I do not think nudity harms.

Also our patio is enclosed and no one can see back there.

I don't consider nudity a problem at all, whether between parent/child of the same sex, or opposite sex. I don't equate nudity with sex so I don't have that weighing on me in the first place. In the second place, I have a profoundly disabled son, whose intelligent and aware, but physically very disabled. He needs to have assistance with toileting, bathing and dressing, so when it needs to be done either my husband or I do it, and there's nothing at all untoward going on. Nudity is not harmful to anyone.

I don't think there's anything wrong with what you did, however you need to consider that your stepdaughters biological mother may not agree (if she's in the picture of course), and you do need to consider and respect her feelings in the matter if that's the case.

I do think also though that if a child starts to become uncomfortable with nudity, either him/herself or in those around them, that needs to be respected too. Like, if my children told me they didn't want me coming in the bathroom/bedroom while they were bathing or dressing anymore, I would stop immediately.

Scientists have a general idea about when humans first started wearing clothes. They draw their conclusions from genetic studies of the common body louse. The body louse feeds on humans but needs clothing to infest in order to do so. The studies show that humans first began to wear clothes some 72,000 years ago. That is give or take 42,000 years, so it is not exactly pinpointed. The human has existed in it present form, homo sapiens, for around 200,000 years, so the numbers show that most likely for more than half the existence of our species, we all were nudists. A nudist is, of course, a person who does not wear clothes.

In those early days, most humans lived in warm climates and there is some indications that they were much hairy than they are today. It was only when they began migrating to colder climates that clothes were first worn and even then it was not modesty, but warmth that was the motivation. Even as we became civilized and in the time of recorded history, the attitude about nudism was much different. In ancient Greece, for example, the habit of nudity was so common that even our word, gymnasium, comes from the Greek word, gymnos, which means nude. This came about because nudity in athletic events was common and accepted. Nudism as a cultural issue exists in only a few scattered and primitive tribes in the Amazon basin or remote Pacific Islands and these few remaining hold outs are under relentless pressure to get dressed.
Today, in what are called nudist colonies, or nudist resorts, people are selectively removing most of all of their clothing. This has led to some myths about nudity, or naturalism, as it is sometime called. One such myth is that nudity is immoral. The reason is seen as sexual in nature. It may be thought of as erotic or pornographic, but still sexual. In fact, nudist do not see themselves as either voyeurs, people who have a prurient interest in seeing naked bodies, or exhibitionists, people who have a prurient interest in being seen naked. Nudism and Sex

I think nudism and sex does get mixed up sometimes. I think that in
Europe and particularly in Germany the people are more in touch with
themselves and more comfortable with nudity. I remember walking round
the Englische Garten in Munich some years ago. It was full of nudists
and naked people just enjoying themselves the same way in which clothed
people would. No one batted an eyelid and its probably how nudism was
intended to be. I cannot for the life of me imagine the same scene in
London's Hyde Park. Well I can, but it wouldn't be pretty.

The point of nudism surely is the sense of freedom and the choice to
remove clothes, go for a swim and just generally chill out. I am not
sure what all the fuss is about. I wonder sometimes why people go to
extraordinary lengths just to get naked even in mid winter when any
fool can see its best to wrap up warm.

There is a certain element of voyeurism in naturism. I am convinced of
this. Most of it is harmless and mild but endless photos of guys
seeking pleasure in having their photos taken - standing straight, arm
on hip, staring out to sea - the emphasis on 'look at my willy' is
really not a good promotion of nudism in general. Even nude on a beach,
I would prefer my lower half left out of the picture but would have no
objections to being photographed fully in a group with others naked. I
would not like to be photographed posing just for the sake of it. This
has nothing to do with not being ashamed or being ashamed of anything.

Nudists who make a habit of this attract ridicule and do naturism no
favours. In the United Kingdom there are several nudist beaches. Unfortunately,
these beaches inevitably attract the 'man in mac' types and all the
nudists tend to be bunched up into some signposted area with big read
warning signs as if the occupants of this part of the beach are
abnormal. Even more disturbing is that they are almost always against a
backdrop of sand dunes. Look closely and you can see the glint of light
shining off the array of binoculars and bird watchers amongst the grass
- sadly they are not seeking the feathered birds. I am sorry if I paint
a sorry and seedy picture of nudism in the UK. There are of course
places where you can find secluded locations and out of the way places
where you can relax and enjoy nudism as it should be enjoyed.

Having enjoyed naturism in the past in countries where the climate and
environment is more condusive to feeling the wind between ones legs, I
am not against naturism in any way at all.
For me naturism is a personal thing. Perhaps something to be enjoyed
with a group of friends or whenever the occassion lends itself. It is
not something that will cause me to run off in desperation to find the
nearest place to remove my clothes.

So, nudism and sex. The two are tied obviously - I hear you gasp. Look
around the internet to try and find a reasonable naturist site such as
this one and you find endless exploits of photos of naturists, nudist
videos for sale and nudist sites designed for people to come and oggle.

Great if your a voyeur and this is what you want. How many genuine
naturists have posted their nude pics somewhere on the net only to find
that they end up on some porn site or adult image bank. Failing that,
and I am sorry to be blunt, but how many end up decorating someones
desktop and objects of lust and desire by people saving money on buying
the latest Playboy mag.

Naturists need to be careful. If your footloose and fancy free and
really don't give a damn thats fine but what happens when you get
married, have kids maybe, and then, lo and behold your 9 year old photo
of you naked is found plastered all over some website. Believe me, it
happens.

The reason why naturism and sex go hand in hand is the reason we have
naturist clubs that do not generally accept single men. The safety and
security factor of such clubs provides a better environment for
nudists. There are also plenty of 'swingers' who are into naturism in a
big way. Naturists attract the wrong types. Its a fact. Another reason
why clubs are so popular. Seclusion is a kind of protection. It is such
a shame that it has to be this way. If our society were more liberal
and we had all become used to naturism and nudism in the parks and
streets of our land then perhaps many more would be encouraged to shed
their clothing.

And finally, naturism is all about getting back to nature? I am not so
sure. What I do find funny is naturists wandering around a supermarket
carrying shopping bags, wearing sun shades, a watch, shoes or trainers
and not a stitch of clothing. Surely, that was never meant to be. It
cannot be too hygienic in a supermarket surely.

Introduction

In 1927, an American named Maurice Parmelee published The New Gymnosophy in London (it was later published as Nudism in Modern Life in the United States). Parmelee advocated nudism (or gymnosophy) as a means for beautifying the population, saying,

... Through sexual selection gymnosophy will eventually produce a much more beautiful mankind. Gymnosophists have every incentive to avoid deformations of the body, and to strive by means of a healthy and natural life for a well developed form, because deformities and malformations are all too apparent in a state of nudity. [Parmelee 174]

In 2001, the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR), the world's largest nudist organization, published this statement regarding nudism:

Nudists respect each other's individuality. Our own self esteem is enhanced by our ability to accept ourselves as we really are. We find it easy to accept others regardless of physical size, shape, or body condition. [AANR 2001]

In the span of 74 years, nudism has evolved from an activity advocating social pressure as an incentive to keep oneself as attractive as possible, to a movement advocating acceptance of any body, healthy and attractive or not.

Parmelee saw the establishment of a nudist society as part of "the future course of social evolution," envisioning nudists in small groups, working together to create a society which would free them from industrialization and lessen the desire for "useless and harmful objects," and which would "restore to the hands and muscles the training and skill of which they have been deprived by the present machine age" (248). In short, Parmelee anticipated the growth of nudism as a cure for social ills.

As he hoped, nudism has grown in popularity. In 2001, membership in AANR has grown to over 50,000 individual members and more than 230 affiliated clubs, resorts and campgrounds. However, rather than altering existing society or creating a new type of society, nudism has become part of that very society which Parmelee believed has led to "the acute maladjustment" between man and his surroundings (258). Today, nude recreation is a multi-million dollar industry. AANR is affiliated with several different supporting industries, creating revenues for local and national governments, and encouraging the growth of those industries. Nudism has been integrated into capitalism, promoting and profiting from the very structure which its founder hoped to change.

This paper will explore how and why the nudist movement has changed since its inception in America, and will offer an analysis of the current state of nudism. The appeal and success of nudism in America is due to economic factors which, while seeming to contradict the stated ideals of the nudist movement as "free" and "natural," actually ensure its success. Nudism, while purporting to free its members from the ills of the capitalist, industrialized system, is a part of that system and, in fact, could not function without it.

Studies of popular culture, including forms of recreation and/or leisure, tend to focus on sociological functions or psychological effects of leisure on social groups. However, a more anthropological approach is to examine the social, political, and cultural conditions under which new leisure activities become popular and ultimately commodified and exchanged under capitalist social relations of production (Clarke 29-34). The growth and structure of the nudist movement is analyzed from a political economy perspective, emphasizing the ways in which nudism has been incorporated into the structure of capitalism in order to become a profitable enterprise, as well as one that is compatible with capitalist ideology. Today, the nudist movement continues to expound values that are at odds with capitalist ideology, but without actually practicing those values.

The American Association for Nude Recreation

AANR is the focus of this study because it is the oldest and largest nudist society in America, though there are other American nudist societies (most notably The Naturist Society), which function in similar ways. AANR's role in establishing guidelines for nude recreation, and lobbying in Washington DC for legislation affecting nude recreation make it of special interest for this analysis. Though the literature published by AANR advocates an egalitarian and "natural" lifestyle, actual practices contradict this rhetoric. AANR is fully integrated into local and national government and industry, and can therefore be seen as an instrument of coercion and control. The following analysis of the political economy of the nudist movement explores these issues more thoroughly, demonstrating that AANR is invested in maintaining the status quo rather than disrupting it.

Structure of the Paper

First, a description of the current structure and activities of the AANR is offered. Second is an examination of the rhetoric of the modern nudist movement as exemplified by the promotional literature of AANR, and a delineation of contradictions between its stated mission and actual practice, in order to demonstrate that the goals of nudism are not those which are articulated by the literature of the movement. The third section examines who profits economically from the marketing and success of organized nudism. Fourth, an explanation is offered as to why, given the contradictions between rhetoric and practice, individuals participate in nudism. These last two sections attempt to reconcile issues of structure versus agency, demonstrating first how the nudist movement works within existing political and economic structures as a capitalist enterprise, and next proposing individual motivations for taking part in the movement, despite the larger structural issues.

Structure of AANR

The American Association for Nude Recreation traces its roots to the 1929 founding of the American League for Physical Culture. In 1931 the name of the organization was changed to the American Sunbathing Association (ASA), then changed to the American Association for Nude Recreation in 1995. AANR (among other things) publishes material promoting nudism, assists affiliated clubs with advertising and recruitment of new members, and sends lobbyists to Washington to aid legal battles related to nude recreation. By all accounts, participation in nudism and the growth of supporting industries is on the increase. According to AANR, their membership has increased by 76 percent in the last ten years and now totals more than 50,000 individual members (AANR 1999).

Laying Bare the Nature of Nudism

He preached the benefits of nudism--for the mind and the body--and he altered the image of nudists from sex-crazed social lepers to open-minded naturists.

It was on bucolic, grassy, eucalyptus-scented grounds in woodsy Topanga Canyon that Ed Lange created the nudist paradise of Elysium Fields--the first nudist resort to adopt a "clothing-optional" policy rather than requiring all visitors to disrobe. It still exists, 30 years after he founded it.

Lange, the son of strict Chicago Baptists, believed in baring his soul and everything else to commune with nature, and spent his adult life trying to demystify the nudist way of life.

He got the Supreme Court to change its mind about whether nudist magazines could be sent through the mails, and Kodak to change its policy about printing nudist pictures. He went on early talk shows--fully clad--to promote the nudist line.

Lange died in 1995, but his secluded paradise, Los Angeles' only nudist colony, has thrived for three decades, despite prayer vigils outside its gates, persistent efforts by the county government to shut it down, and dismayed neighbors who might not have realized what the place was until after they moved in. Elysium Fields casts itself not as a playland for swingers or a mecca for voyeurs, but as an "educational facility and clothing-optional resort," a place for families. It embraces a "nude is not lewd" philosophy, and sex and "provocative play" are prohibited--repeat, prohibited. It invites visitors to shed their problems along with their attire and get in touch with their senses, to smell the grass, enjoy the fresh air and count the clouds.

As a teenager in Chicago, Lange became fascinated with nudism after buying an early nudist magazine, Sunshine & Health, sold under the counter at a drugstore. Unlike most other young men, Lange was drawn to the articles more than the pictures.

Abandoning Chicago, he moved to Los Angeles in 1940, working as a set designer and as a freelance photographer for Life, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. But his true career path opened up when he heard about what happened to Laura Glassey.

Glassey was a pioneer in the nudist movement, and she had opened the Elysia nudist park in the hills above Tujunga. But hostile newspaper accounts of alleged lewd behavior and hints of "unspeakable orgies" behind the "impenetrable wall" prompted authorities to act. Glassey was on the brink of losing her park.

To forestall it, members complied with a 1939 county law prohibiting nudism, and took to wearing G-strings. But when an unsuspecting sunbather dropped hers to go skinny-dipping, sheriff's deputies, peering through binoculars from the hills above, swooped in. Glassey was arrested and eventually had to close Elysia.

Through the ordeal, Lange was one of her biggest supporters. He set out to improve conditions for nudists and change what he considered an unhealthy attitude about sex and the human body. He and his wife, June, formed the Sundial Club, a social group for nudists that met in the Langes' Hollywood apartment in the early 1950s.

He did not yet have the law on his side, but he had history.

Benjamin Franklin regularly took "air baths," sitting naked in front of an open window and breathing deeply. James Burnett, the Scottish scientist who was one of the first to suggest that man descended from apes, was a nudist, as was Charles Richter, inventor of the earthquake scale.

Lange waged numerous legal battles. He won a 1956 U.S. Supreme Court decision granting second-class mailing privileges for nudist publications. Five years later, he began publishing his quarterly nudist pamphlet, the Journal of the Senses, and wrote books promoting nudity, including "Beyond Nakedness" and "As Nature Intended."

He persuaded Eastman Kodak to change its policy of refusing to return prints of nudes sent in for developing. Though he was fully clothed, he scandalized daytime TV viewers in the early 1960s by appearing on "Art Linkletter's House Party" to promote the lifestyle.

With his different-drummer tune, Lange had a Pied Piper ability to attract followers and promote a healthier attitude toward body acceptance, health and self-esteem. But even in Topanga--whose comfortably bohemian residents pride themselves on their reputation for tolerance--Lange encountered resistance to the project he began in 1968.

He said he had found his heaven, his ideal naturist resort, on the edge of Topanga State Park. On his eight acres--with one fig tree--he built an oasis of tranquillity where two common status symbols, clothes and cars, still have no currency. Indeed, cars, loudspeakers and radios are banned to this day.

On warm weekends, waitresses and teachers still mingle with doctors and lawyers. Some play tennis in nothing but sneakers, while others swim in the buff in the pool. Children squeal and romp across the lawn.

But the retreat has had troubles since it opened in 1968. Avidly curious neighbors climbed to the top of the hills surrounding Lange's property, peeked over and called the sheriff. Deputies arrested Lange and two dozen others on successive weekends, charging them with indecent exposure.

Determined to overthrow the ordinance, Lange began his first legal fight. He challenged the county code and won. The county appealed and Lange prevailed again. The state Court of Appeal finally upheld the right to assemble on private property, whether clothed or unclothed, as constitutionally protected.

Thwarted on one front, officials continued to battle over zoning and land issues until 1992, when they finally gave up and recognized the camp's right to exist.

Spanning almost three decades, the battle to gain legal and community acceptance cost Lange more than $1 million. The same local business leadership and the Topanga Chamber of Commerce that once shunned him and would not sell him a ticket to the group's annual dinner named Lange Man of the Year in 1994, a year before he died.

Today, Elysium Institute (which includes Elysium Growth Press, the publishing company that supports the resort and its educational facilities) is carried on by one of Lange's daughters.

With the passage of time, Elysium Fields--where the clothed and unclothed can mingle in harmony--has become what Lange intended, just another part of a colorful California landscape, rather than a risque spot on a titillation tour of Los Angeles.

Gymnophobia what is it?

Gymnophobia (Greek: “Gymnos” meaning nude and “Phobia” meaning fear) is the fear of being, or seeing others, naked. A gymnophobe is someone who would like to prevent others from not wearing clothes, and who finds being a naturist or a nudist to be unnatural, offensive, or obscene. Gymnophobia is a condition that manifests itself in the form of loud protests from lawmakers and from the television soapboxes of cable news. These people consider nudism and naturism to be completely outside the norm, even an abomination, and in their frenzy to link nudity solely with sexual nudity, they seem to garner public support for their cause.

But in spite of these protests, polls suggest that our society, when asked anonymously at least, might not be as gymnophobic as previously thought. A 2000 Roper poll revealed that 19% of Americans had skinnydipped in mixed company and that 18% would consider attending a nude beach or club. The percentages were higher for younger people. What’s more, 80% of Americans were found to believe that nude sunbathing was unoffensive and 97% of young Americans feel that nude sunbathers should be granted designated areas to lay out. So, why the hysteria? For one, the “safe” viewpoint that conflates nudity with sex will win out with the sensitive public. By portraying nudists as potential sexual predators, even though there are strict codes to the nudist lifestyle, a politician or talking head can score points with an uninformed public. Also, we live in a society that passes along body shame from generation to generation. When children are very young, they are allowed to run around naked, but at some point, society says that kids must cover up. At that point in a child’s cognitive development, he or she equates nudity not with the freedom they experienced as a toddler, but as a point of shame, something that must be hidden.

As these children grow older and become more self-conscious due to societal pressures to look and act like each other or become insecure due to the onset of puberty and the scary, skewed portrayals of the body’s natural development handed down by parents and schools, they are not likely to revert to that carefree time when the naked body felt like the most natural thing in the world. By the time they are adults, for many, the idea of being naked is offensive and terrifying unless it is to shower or have sex. And then they pass these narrow-minded attitudes to their children.

Many people who try naturism remember what it was like to run free as a little kid and rarely do they revert back to the non-naturist attitude. Along with their clothes, they have shed the societal gymnophobia that they had inherited from previous generations.

Still, the prevailing gymnophobia of our society doesn’t match up to what people believe in privately. As naturists, we can combat gymnophobia by showing that being nude isn’t a festival of carnality, but a way to enjoy life unencumbered. There will always be a select few who give naturism a bad name, as there are those who give doctors, teachers, priests, and businessmen bad names. The key to combating gymnophobia is to show that the bad seeds are the exception to the rule, and not the norm as lawmakers and pundits would like the world to believe.

Only then will we be able to start scaling back the overarching gymnophobia that prevails in America.

Kiata Country Club,nudist club,Australia

Kiata Country Club is a nudist club and not a clothing optional resort. All members and guests are expected to be nude when health and weather conditions permit. This means for example, that if you are cold or getting sunburnt you should put on some clothes. Note that except for sun protection for children, nudity is compulsory when swimming in the dam.

Kiata is located on almost 65 acres of bush land about 65 kilometres north west of the Sydney CBD, between Windsor and Wisemans Ferry.

Having been established since 1970 it is a place where many have enjoyed a naturist lifestyle in the peace and serenity of a natural bush environment. Kiata is a wonderful place for establishing friendships with others who enjoy the nudist lifestyle.

The large clubhouse has regular live entertainment and monthly functions.

Inside the clubhouse there is a large open fire. Winter at Kiata is a lovely time, with warm sunny days and nights spent in front of the open fire or in the heated spa. Like most people, Kiatans tend to rug up and wear warm clothing when the weather is cool.
There is a large, outdoor, heated and covered spa for all members to enjoy.
A half size snooker table is situated in the clubhouse.
There is also indoor table tennis, darts, carpet bowls and a TV with video player.
Several walking tracks are detailed on a map in the members area. With the many native animals and plants within the grounds, bushwalking around Kiata is something special.

I see real nudists. They walk around like everybody else. You don't even know they're naked on the weekends.

Seriously, though - a "real nudist" is anyone who decides to call him/herself a nudist, and in the most general terms possible simply refers to someone who is comfortable with the idea of being nude in mixed company. Not all of them *can* be (there are a lot of closet nudists out there). Additionally, not everyone who is comfortable with mixed nudity calls him/herself a nudist (There's a Naked News segment where the interviewer is on a nude beach, talking to various people there, asking them about nudism and I remember very clearly a stark naked woman saying "oh, I'm not a nudist." Case in point...)

Each person comes into nudism for his/her own reasons. Some common ones: nudity is more comfortable; nudity allows for an all-over tan; nudity promotes positive body image; nudists are terribly friendly folk; spousal involvement (lots of people become nudists after their spouses or significant others try it, and had no personal investment before it, but fall in love with it after trying it).

I'm personally a nudist for none of these reasons - rather, I think that nudity as a sin is an outdated idea predicated on British cultural issues rather than on any religious or scientific reason against it. I value my freedom, and would like the freedom to be naked when it's convenient (ie: when swimming, or when the weather is perfect and there's no practical reason to need clothing). As such, I tend to stay clothed a lot more often than other nudists. To each their own.

There's very little wrong with nudism. For me, I see a problem in that the national organizations (AANR and TNS in the US) have a vested interest in continuing to keep public nudity illegal, as doing so helps increase business at privately-owned nudist resorts. If nudity in the US was completely legal, then we would have no reason for these resorts at all, and they would fade away into oblivion, followed closely by their parent organizations. But I'm willing to accept organizational involvement in order to keep any form of group nudity legal, as there are much more powerful organizations constantly at war with nudists, trying to infringe upon our right to practice our beliefs. One of the more famous examples came in 2003, when then-Congressman Mark Foley sought to end the practice of nudist youth camps (he was not successful, and the youth camp program has had amazing growth since being made famous). Other examples occur constantly, however, and the lobbyists for organized nude recreation have been instrumental in preventing poorly-written laws from negatively impacting our resorts.

An Unoffical History of Nudism

Since the beginning of man, we have been naked and also intrigued by the human body and the different representations it may have. Many argue that the true origin of social nudism came from Adam and Eve. Although only two people participated, then covering up in shame wouldn't put it in either in the "social" or "nudist" categories. The true foundations of nude recreation and social nudism started in Ancient Egypt under Pharaoh Akhen-Aton (1385 - 1353 B.C.). It was during these times that students in Greece exercised and received their education in the nude. Also, most athletes played in the nude including the early Olympic Games in Greece.

It is this proof that might lead one to assume that the Greeks and Romans lived in a clothing optional society. That utopia like nudist accepting society came to an end in 393 A.D. when a Christian emperor banned the Olympic Games because he thought they were Pagan in nature. In the 16th Century, Puritans believed nudity was so immoral, that they didn't bathe because they believed it promoted nudity. The Victorian Era was not any more accepting to nudity. In these times it was common to cover a person's legs, a piano's legs, even a chair's legs in order to prevent sexual arousal. Bathing suits at this time also covered nearly the entire body of both men and women, so going all the way from the wrists to the ankles and up to the mid neck. It wasn't until the Renaissance period that nudity was truly accepted again. In these times nudity was seen as a form of art. Benjamin Franklin and Henry David Thoreau helped the public come to terms with nudity. Thoreau had daily naked walks which he called "air baths". The first domestic swimsuit designed for "decency" appeared in 1830. Featuring red and white horizontal stripes from ankle to wrist, it was named, appropriately, the "prison suit".

It was in the 20th Century when social nudism really became organized. Organized naturism at this time was called Freikorperkultur (Free Body Culture) in Germany. German sociologist Heinrich Pudor, sometimes referred to as the "father of nudism", wrote "The Cult of the Nude" promoting naturism. Shortly after, in 1903, Freilichtpark (Free Light Park) was the first know nudist park to be opened. Founder Paul Zimmerman opened the park near Hamburg, Germany, and was the first owner of an official nudist camp.

In 1929 the flow of German immigrants and tourists began bringing the roots and ideals of the naturist lifestyle to America. It was their representation of the nude body that truly opened the American public's eyes to wholesome nudity without shame. Kurt Barthel, a German immigrant, founded the American League for Physical Culture. Another key figure is Reverend Ilsley Boone, who is viewed as the first nudist leader in the United States. The first nudist magazine, Gymnos, started print in 1921. On Labor Day in 1929, Kurt Barthel met with 3 other couples in Peekskill, New York and began American Social Nudism. Just a couple of months later, the American League for Physical Culture (ALPC) was founded on December 7,1929. The ALPC held their first meeting in a New York gym. In just a few months the ALPC had over 50 members and also had a landed club in Spring Valley. Mason and Frances Merrill often visited the New York facilities and began working on a new book title "Among the Nudists" which was released in 1931. Also in 1931, Reverend Ilsley Boone was elected Vice President of the ALPC and also nicknamed "The Dictator". Boone had big plans to build an American Camp like Kleinberg in Bavaria, but there, more drama in the world of commercial nudism would begin.

In the winter of 1931 the ALPC met at their rented New York gym and were raided by the police and charged with public indecency. On December 9, 1931 the New York Court of General Sessions dismissed the case saying their exposure was neither public or indecent. The publicity caused by this case was a big step forward for the nudist movement and it also laid the groundwork for public nudity cases to come.

Boone was back on the prowl again looking for land in the New York area to purchase for possible construction of a landed camp. He eventually found land nearly 120 miles from New York. The other board members thought the property was too far for most to travel due to the depression and high costs of travel. The majority voted to jointly purchase a camp in Skyfarm and established the club May 15, 1932. Boone was extremely disappointed in the decision of the other board members and left the ALPC. Shortly thereafter he founded the International Nudist Conference (INC) and published the first illustrated nudist magazine, The Nudist, in 1933. The Nudist was a successful magazine that could be found at newsstands across the nation. The controversy of the magazine drew a lot of public attention to the nudist movement, again. A few years later he changed The Nudist's title to the less confrontational Sunshine and Health. It was with the help of the Merrill's second book, "Nudism in America", and "On Going Naked" by Jan Gay (which also laid the ground work for Mich Mindins 1935 film, "This Nude World") that also helped the public become aware of the size and significance of the nudist movement, and realize that clubs were popping up all across the nation. In the 1930's on a hot summer day, thousands of men in Long Island, New York took of their shirts to cool off, which was an unlawful and lewd act at the time. Six years later, in 1936, the law was changed which decriminalized a man going topless. In the 30's the largest of all nudist clubs/camps were Victor Burke's Camp Olympia in Upstate New York, the Sparta Club in Normandy, and Adolph Koch's nudist school, Freikorparkulturschule, outside Berlin.

The nudist movement began to stall and die down in the late 30's and early 40's due to the overwhelming Puritan belief system engraved in the roots of America, implying that nudity equals sin. Another devastating blow was the 1941 United States Postal Service "Comstock Law" which was originally created in 1873 which stated that no obscene material was permitted to travel through the mail system. Nudist publishers immediately stopped their USPS shipments in fear of fines. It was Reverend Boone who again came to the rescue battling this law through the 40's and 50's in Washington, D.C. to make sure nudism would be judged to be nonsexual, and therefore not obscene. On January 13, 1958, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Boone and all nudists throughout America, especially the publishers, ruling that nudist photos were permitted to travel through the USPS mail system and the photos are not obscene. This ruling was a big relief to nudists and especially the growth of the nudist movement. From here on out, the public knew that the nudist movement would flourish and was here to stay. Eventually the Police raids reduced until the last one took place in Michigan in 1956. A Christian radio evangelist took it into his liberty to close down the Sunshine Gardens Nudist Resort. Although, to our satisfaction, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled naturists had the right to practice nudism with private resorts and this is exactly why we call the 1950's the Golden Era of Nudism.

Today the nudist movement still struggles to be accepted by mainstream America. Each day throughout the world, there are several news stories that hit the wire including, streaking, nude art, nudist camp controversies, and some of the latest attacks on Nudist Youth Summer Camps. All of the stories are mainly media stunts that have no actual legal consequences and are usually swept off the print room floor quickly. Today there are still many organizations working together to promote naturism/nudism including CFI, AANR, INF, TNS and several more. It is these organizations that battle the courts, advertise and promote to the general public, and most importantly, educate those who are unaware of the ideals and benefits of nude recreation.
