Crushing Chinoiserie

Chinoiserie has been a long-time favorite of mine. At first thought it might seem a bit strange to use it in children's decor but because of the playful nature of the pattern it works perfectly. Here are a few examples of ways to bring it into your child's decor:

Wallpaper

I think if you want an all over room look go for wallpaper in this motif. A white background is more subtle.

And a colored is more bold.

Or just bring it in as a fabric on a headboard or pillow.

Bunk Room Friday

It is amazing how quickly Friday rolls around during a holiday week. Well I apologize for the lack luster posts this week. My client work is pulling me away from blogging. But I had to at least get you a good bunk room to get you through the weekend.

Although these are not technically bunk beds, I consider any room with more than two beds in it a bunk room. These rustic platform beds should be relatively easy to replicate don't you think? You just have to be very neat since you can't hide anything under the beds!

Why do European bedrooms always seem so serene?

It must be the lack of color thatI find so hard to actually emulate in practice for children's rooms. What is your preference bold color or monotone like this one above?

Montana Mountains Bunk Room

I'm skiing up in Montana this weekend and we went on a few house tours just for fun. Here is a bunk room in one of the places, two full beds and a twin over full bunk across the room. Nicely done and they look oh so comfy. Put this in your mountain house files.

The Simplified Nursery by Annette Tatum

The simple order by the piece instead of by the set trend for nurseries is growing. Serena & Lily and Dwell came up with the concept first. The New Arrivals and now Annette Tatum is hopping on board.

They have the largest selection of colors but don't expect anything bold. Annette Tatum characteristically has soft color palettes so the colors are a little more demure. I've always thought they had the best stripes though. Here is a glimpse at the sheet offering below:

I love the simplicity and clean look of white but you all know I prefer a little pattern on my skirt...so I'd have to go custom on that piece of the set.

Getting in the Valentine's Day Spirit

I'm sure many of you were helping your children work on their Valentines for Tuesday this weekend. Well here is a room designed by Jennifer Brouwer featured on Coco & Kelly last week which is truly the epitome of the Valentine's spirit.

And yes those headboards are just painted onto the chalkboard wall! Not particularly high on the comfort scale but it looks great and is inexpensive.

Bunk Room Friday - Room for Mom & Dad

This is an interesting take on a bunk room. The concept is actually great, especially for a guest house. Mom and dad can still keep an eye on the kids who are bunked up in the hallway space. Hopefully those are sliding doors to offer a little more privacy if needed.

DIY Ikea Craft Corner

I'm working on quite a few playrooms right now for clients. Most of them are in large basements, but if you are like me and don't have a basement yet this is a wonderful alternative featured on Modern Parents Messy Kids (a fabulous blog).

All the storage items are from Ikea so accessible for all of you. Best thing is it costs less than $100 to replicate! Fabulous right!?

Children's Rooms by Annsley Interiors in Boston

One of my daily reads Chic Coles, featured some works by the interior designer Annsley McAleer of Annsley Interiors in Boston today. She had so many great children's rooms in the post I knew there had to be more in her portfolio and I was pleasantly surprised! Notice how all of the rooms have pretty lighting and custom window treatments, it makes a difference people!

House of Fifty is wonderful on-line shelter publication which just released its Winter/Spring 2012 issue. They have an article entitled Creating Magical Spaces for Children by Saudah Sadeem which is worth a look. Not only are there some inspiring colorful photos but some great tips and resources as well. All of the rooms featured have at least one bold focal point which should inspire you when designing your children's rooms.

Parson's Play Table from West Elm

Thank you to Nursery Notations reader Heather for tipping me off to the new Parson's Play Table by West Elm.

I'm in love! I have two parson's desks from them at my house already and even better this Parson's Play Table is available in tangerine! Woo hoo! 30" square by 22" high. I think two of these would make a great multi-functional play table/coffee table in a family room.

This is giving the Jennifer DeLonge Grace Square Set (which is still out of stock for over a year, pictured below) a run for their money!

Perfect Girl's Desk

There are so many things that I like about this room featured on Amber Interior Design yesterday. A bold wallpaper, chevron rug, the pink and orange combo and to top it off a custom desk and custom posting board. Don't' you just love the shape?

For the next nursery I design, I'd love to have a carpenter build a piece like this to be used as a changing table, then when the little girl grows up it is a fabulous desk. Talk about a piece growing with your child!

John Robshaw Jr.

The room along with the rest of the house was featured on Remodelista last week and I've been dying to share it with you since I saw the post. What is not to love? Yes those wicker baskets for bookcases might not be the most practical use of space but don't they look interesting and different?

Bunk Room Friday - Speilberg's Nautical Nook

Talk about a nautical bunk room fit for the stars. This fabulous room was designed by Naomi Leff for Steven Speilberg in his East Hampton home. I'm nuts about the colors in that compass rug and the rich stain in the bunks.

Childrens Rooms by Jeffers Design Group

I have a new design crush to share with you today. It is the fabulous residential interior design team from the Jefferes Design Group. I would kill to work with them for just a day. They are based in San Francisco but work on projects all over the US focusing on Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and the Napa Valley area. They have been featured in all of the major shelter magazines many times.

The Jeffers Design Group has many beautiful projects which include children's spaces that it was hard to select my favorite but here you go:

The small scale horizontal stripes in this boys room makes this space unique.

I love everything about this nursery

A game/rec room for the teens in the house.

A nautical-inspired room with a fabulous red built-in desk.

Having some fun with color and seating in this playroom.

A stylish place to do homework (killer globe pendants).

You would never have guessed that this was a basement playroom.

A pretty and feminine place for homework.

Daybed and wallpaper - a favorite combo. Those birds are so sweet!

Introducing Franklin & Ben Nursery Furniture

A new furniture company, Franklin & Ben, is making waves in the children's furniture arena. They are based in Los Angeles and their vision is to create a brand that references history by revitalizing traditional craft.

I'm gushing over the new Copley set designed by Jennifer Delonge (above). I'm a sucker for rink pulls and the two tone design makes the pieces extremely unique.

The Liberty set is a fresh take on the classic Jenny Lind style. You really can't go wrong there.
