We started CoolChaser in February 2007 and it has been such an awesome ride. We started the site because so many people were having trouble putting layouts on their MySpace page. While others sites were providing codes for premade layouts,  on our site, people were able to create their own personalized layouts and update them with a push of a button without copying and pasting codes (remember those days?) People loved our site and we are still proud of what we were able to offer!

Well, fast forward to July 2011, MySpace finally called it quits to those layouts by killing css customization.  We thought we should just shut down our site then, but since there were so many beautiful layouts created by our users on our site, we decided to convert all the layouts to work on Facebook. We tried our best to catch up with all the changes Facebook constantly rolled out, but we can no longer keep up with it and do not want to over promise our users anymore.

We are thankful to all who were so supportive of us! We hope our paths will cross again someday.

May 2013 be a wonderful year for all!

To those who are interested, the reason why it was deleted was because we tied all the layouts to our old accounts. Layouts that were not tied to any account were deleted every night automatically. We forgot to remove this and when we switched over to the new Facebook Connect, the system thought the layouts were not associated to any account and deleted them

We might have many more bugs so please be patient with us and let us know if you find anything!

What this means to existing CoolChaser users is, very soon you will not be able to create any new MySpace layouts or themes. However, we will keep your account for a while so you can view your existing layouts and themes and can use it if you still have Profile 1.0. However, since we think only a very very small portion of users still have Profile 1.0, we will most probably not going to keep the accounts for very long. Please comment on this post if you have any concerns regarding this.

So what is going to happen to all the beautiful layouts and themes our wonderful users created? No worries, they will not be wasted, as we are going to convert all of them to Facebook layouts so you can use them on Facebook. So stay tuned!

We still supported Profile 1.0 and 2.0, but MySpace recently actively converted all the inactive Profile 1.0 and Profile 2.0 into 3.0 automatically. We are not entirely sure but we think people with Profile 1.0 who logged in and had some activity were not converted though so if you still have Profile 1.0 (like our official MySpace site) you can still use our layout by pasting the code manually inside the “About me” section. All the fields in MySpace will now say “No CSS allowed” but you can still paste it in there and will work if MySpace still kept your Profile 1.0 layout.

They also changed the way how we inserted the layouts automatically into Profile 1.0 and got rid of the Profile 2.0 editor entirely from their site; therefore, our auto insert toolbar no longer works for any profiles right now. We are researching if we can get the toolbar to work at least for Profile 1.0.

To people who still have the precious Profile 1.0, we think it’s only a matter of time MySpace converts all the profiles to Profile 3.0, so might as well enjoy your own custom made layouts while it lasts!

There has been a problem with the Photobucket media plugin on our Theme Creator since couple of days ago. Whenever people try to embed a background using Photobucket, it busts out of our site and directly goes to Photobucket showing only the widget. We have contacted Photobucket but have not received a response yet. We will temporarily disable their media plugin until they resolve the problem, so in the meantime please manually embed the image link from photobucket for now. Hope we hear from them soon!

I’ve been getting some questions from people asking how to remove duplicated stickers they accidently posted on their page. Unfortunately, MySpace doesn’t allow us to access the user’s profile to retrieve information so we can’t remove the graphics for you automatically. So removing would be required to be done manually.

Here’s how. Take a look at the section that you posted the sticker. For example, I posted 2 cat graphics on my “About me” by accident.

So, I need to click “Edit Profile” from the top navigation menu “Profile” and go to the “About me” box.

Here’s the code for the first sticker.

As you can see, all the BumpMe code starts with this code:

What a beautiful theme! It doesn’t even look like a MySpace layout huh? I recommend using the technique used in this theme for the background to make a professional looking layout. The background is actually very tall (1429px!) so even if you have a big monitor, you won’t see the background image get cut off on the bottom! And it’s fixed position so no matter how long your MySpace gets with all the comments from your friends, your background will stay in the same place. I like how the background image is shaping the content too. Love love love it!!

Clean and very simple but has lots of small details, such as round corners, double background, quote inside the basic info box, and a thin banner on top! Jasmine has other very similar looking themes that are equally beautiful such as the Hater theme so go check them out!

What a beautiful theme! It uses the double background technique with a huge image on the basic info box. All of the images are well blended and has a very soft feeling to it! Who doesn’t like butterflies?

OK this is another girly theme but hey I like girly stuff! I love the color palette used in this theme very much. It would had been better if the background’s image had a wider white space to enclose the modules, but still a very beautiful theme.

These are just some of the recent ones I found today but I’m sure there are many more beautiful themes out there. Please let us know when you run into a cool theme that you wanna share with other people, whether it’s someone else’s or yours!

We are planning to take the following steps:

1) Close down on new registrations but still let existing members to view & clip.
2) Disable the clip button so no new clips will be made.
3) We will keep the site for only browsing for a while.
4) TBD: When the day comes when we decide on shutting down ClipClip entirely, we will provide a download link to let our members to export their clips.

We love ClipClip and are very proud of the service it has brought to our users. However ClipClip became the haven for spammers. They exploited our service to advertise their poorly made sites – some were even paying people to clip their sites. We tried very hard to fight them but to continue weeding the spam and install adequate spam prevention measures would require too much work.

Therefore, we have decided to focus on helping people explore and find items online in other ways. We are very excited about this new project and hope you will find it useful and compelling.

They told us that nothing from the app can link to our CoolChaser.com site – which means, even if you would like your friend to preview the layouts and themes you’ve created, there is no way they can preview it or use the layout – cause it doesn’t link anywhere!!

Why are they treating CoolChaser like a swine flu? LOL Like we mentioned before, they claim that they found lots of inappropriate materials on our site. I tell you, MySpace content review team knows more curse/sick words than anybody on this planet! Since the CoolChaser developers are all dorks, we were like “I can’t find that thing they mentioned!! How did they find it!” LOL

We don’t want any of our users to promote hate, violence, and porn (just enjoy porn elsewhere!) on our site which I know 99% of our users don’t. But like somebody said, “it only takes one @$$hole to ruin your day”. Especially if you deliberately look for one!

Thanks for your understanding and we would really like to thank all of our loyal fans for supporting us! We are working hard to improve our site (hey do you like the auto insert thing? Isn’t it cool?) Like always, please feel free to leave us comments/suggetion/feedbacks

YET ANOTHER UPDATE (5/26/09): Auto insert feature is back now for both Firefox and IE! Woo Hoo! Read more here!

UPDATE – 4.15.09: Yes, the Auto Insert feature IS BACK! It’s still in super BETA and only for Firefox users though. But IE people, don’t despair, you can still try it out the following steps! (btw, we ARE planning to have an IE version soon so if it is too complicated, you can sit back and relax until we release the IE version ;))

How to use this extension (especially for IE users)

1. Download & Install Firefox

2. Go to your user homepage and you should see a BIG SHINY Auto Insert button!

3. Not just yet! Download & Install the CoolChaser Extension first to use this button! (you will be prompted to do so right there)

4. Restart Firefox and click that install button like you’ve never clicked anything before.

5. Done, you got a new layout!

What’s so great about this extension:

1. It will automatically detect what profile you are using (1.0 or 2.0) so you don’t even have to be on the right tab!

2. It will replace the old CoolChaser layout code so no need to look for it!

3. IT’S SUPER FAST, I was able to update my layout 5 times in one minute!! (from my history)

Couple of things to note:

1) Like I already mentioned, this extension is still in Super Beta mode, and as we are planning to ship out the IE compatible one, you WILL need to reinstall a newer version later. (but this should be a piece of cake)

2. There is a known bug that you’ll see a tiny frame on top of your browser when updating your layout. This disappears after you update your layout and is not permanent. We are looking into the fix.

Hey guys! Sorry that we didn’t notice for a while, but we just found out that the background image doesn’t show up for Profile 2.0. (If you are using Profile 1.0 and the background isn’t showing, that’s a different problem so you can ignore this post!)

We will have a fix soon but here’s how to fix it manually.

1) Go to the MySpace Profile Editor by clicking here or log in to your Myspace account and click “Customize Profile” under the “Profile” top nav button.

2) In the CSS part where you paste the code, DELETE everything before the word “body”

We are so sorry that we didn’t notice this earlier! And let me know if the above method doesn’t work.

YET ANOTHER UPDATE (5/26/09): Auto insert feature is BACK! Woo Hoo! Read more here.

So MySpace didn’t like the auto insert functionality from gigya for some security reason so we had to take that very convenient feature out. They told us to use their “Post It” tool and we tried it but it SUCKS for layouts. Have you guys tried this “Post It” tool? I think it works great for graphics or videos to embed on your profile. But for layouts, it just doesn’t make sense.

Here are the things we didn’t like about that tool.

1) Since it’s CSS code that we are inserting, they try to apply that CSS to that preview page itself and since it’s not compatible, the whole page looks all screwed up. (as you can see the sparkle background is appearing on random places.)

2) There are 3 choices to choose where to paste it, and 2 of them won’t work (the bulletin and blog).

3) It does NOT work for posting a Profile 2.0 layout!!

We thought this was way too confusing so decided not to use this tool.

We are pretty sure many people will miss this functionality as last time we were told to show only codes, lots of our users weren’t happy (58 comments!) I already see many people confused again because they are pasting the code in our shout box

All we can do now is to hope for MySpace Post It tool to work for layouts!! I don’t see why they wouldn’t want to make it compatible, because customizing layouts is what made MySpace popular, don’t you think??

Whoa! I have to confess, I’ve never watched Twilight yet (don’t stone me!), but this looks like an official MySpace Twilight page created for this character! I love how Georgia uses the graphic in the Basic Info box! Much more freedom than using the network box in terms of space, isn’t it? Georgia also has lots of other cool 2.0 themes with a similar style – so go check them out!

This is actually a very unique theme, do you notice that the Basic Info Box has a different background (white) from the other modules? Also, it uses the Rasta logo (is it a logo?) as a whole inside the Basic Info Box, and as a background for the other module headers. A very creative theme!

Another Vampire Theme by our new rising star CJ! She is constantly on the top of our ranking page and has lots of fans! She always make sure that her themes look great both in 1.0 and 2.0 and for this theme, I personally like the 2.0 version She has lots of cool Valentines themes too so go check’em out!

As of today, Dec 19, looks like 45Steve‘s Christmas Glitter is totally kicking ass! But remember, the finalists are the top 10, and among them, the CoolChase team will select the winner from the criteria that we listed on the contest blog so anybody still has a chance!

Also, we have a new feature to let your friends know about your themes so TELL TELL TELL your friends and have ALL OF THEM use your contest theme!! Go to your themes page (http:www.coolchaser.com/user/themes) and you’ll notice a link “share.” From their, you can post a bulletin to notify all your friends on MySpace about your new creation.

There are so many beautiful themes in the contest which aren’t used as much. Why? Cause people don’t know about it! So we hope you find this new feature useful

So let’s go through the details, shall we?

1. Submit your theme:
   From today Dec 5th, 2008 to Dec 19th, 2008 Dec 26th, 2008* (submitting period), create a Holiday/Festivities theme (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Years etc) using our Theme Creator.

   When saving the theme, tag it “contest_08” and you will be automatically entered to the contest.

   

   You can enter as many themes as you want!

   *Deadline is extended for one week so people will have more time to create post Christmas themes – you can still win even if you enter late!

2. The finalists:
   From Dec 12th, 2008 to Jan 3rd, 2009 (rating period) we will count the number of people who used the theme during that period and get the top 10 finalists.The submitting period and rating period will overlap for one week. That means we won’t count the number of people who used the theme the first week of the submission period so even if you enter a little late, you still have a chance to win! Also people won’t have to wait to use the themes before the contest ends – just wait for one week OK?

3. The winner:
   Among the top 10, we (the Coolchaser team) will choose the best theme based on the following criteria:
   a) use of color
   b) use of creative graphics
   c) use of space
   d) sense of style
   e) accurate representation of the Holiday/Festivity spirit

   The creator of that theme is going to be the winner!

4. Announcement:We will announce the winner on Jan 10th, 2009! Did I already say that the winner will receive a brand new 8GB iPod Touch?

There are some rules to this contest that you should be aware of:

1. You need to be older than 13.
2. All the materials used on the theme should either be your original or you have permission to use it from the original owner.
3. Make sure your CoolChaser account has a valid email so we may contact you. (so if you win we can send the prize to you!)
4. Entries containing lewd, offensive or pornographic content will be automatically disqualified, at CoolChaser’s sole discretion.
5. All contestants agree to allow us to promote them and their
   themes in any marketing related manner without any further compensation.
6. No mechanically reproduced mail-in entries are allowed and any use of robotic, automatic, programmed or the like entry methods will void all such entries by such methods.

But other than that, anybody from anywhere around the world can enter this contest (except for us – the CoolChaser team and their families!).

Notes: Make sure you guys follow the instructions on the blog, or else you might not be properly entered in the contest. Putting “contest_08” on the title of the theme instead of tagging it, or “contest 08” without an underscore won’t be considered a valid entry.

Also, you can’t tag an old theme created before Dec 5th to enter the contest. It has to be a new one!

1) Dynamic editing for both Profile 1.0 and 2.0 at the same time!

Just toggle between 2 views and tweak your layout both for 1.0 and 2.0 simultaneously! Your setting from 1.0 will be carried over to 2.0 but you can still tweak some specific stuff just for 2.0 such as… (drum rolls)

2) Round corners option for 2.0 layouts! Hurray~!

Thanks to the great 2.0 HTML markup, you can easily create round corner layouts in a snap! Ain’t that cool? Without this option, it might have not been so exciting huh

3) Cool graphic option for the Basic Info Box!

Were you pissed off that the 2.0 layouts didn’t have network boxes? Why not use the network image on the Basic Info Box since there is a huge blank space in the middle! Not all network images will look good in the Basic Info Box, so we didn’t make that into a default but instead added an option to click if you do want the network box’s image to carry over to the 2.0 layout. Pretty neat huh?

We are going to continue adding cool options for 2.0 since there are lots of freedom so if you have any requests, let us know!

1) Network graphics and contact graphics are not supported in 2.0. MySpace took those boxes out so you will need to be creative and find where to use those graphics on other areas of the page! This isn’t a great example, but here’s something you can do:

Now this is how it is converted to 2.0

Hmmm.. so it’s kinda boring right? Since there is no contact/network graphics.

So what I did was this:

A little less boring isn’t it? I put the network graphic inside the div.basicInfoDetails using advanced CSS in the theme editor. You can use the advance tab and enter your own css in there as we do insert advanced codes in both 1.0 and 2.0. Not all network graphics will work this way though, this example worked because it had a transparent background and was small. But there are so many things you can try it out so keep experimenting!

2) Tiny layouts ain’t tiny no more in Profile 2.0 – You can make it sort of tiny by going to Myspace’s Profile editor and select the tiniest width.

3) Banner layouts might look weird. We tried to use the exact code we use for Profile 1.0, but if you have a translucent layout and use Firefix, the banner will just disappear for Firefox users. (not sure if this is a bug or what) So we changed the code a bit so it will show in any browser, but if you had borders, background colors, and repeated somehow, it won’t be carried over. But theme creators can create new graphics just for the 2.0 themes so it will be compatible with both layouts this way! Not really sure the best solution yet, so we will play around a bit more!

OK i think there will be more bugs and glitches so let us know and we will try hard to perfect it as much as we can!

I really like this theme by Megan because it is so colorful and pop!

Again, there are so many more wondering Thanksgiving themes, I mean the quality has been just going higher and higher everyday! When you see a theme that you really like, visit their profile page and praise them by leaving comments or giving them 5 stars! In fact I’m going to do that once I’m done blogging!

Some points:

1) Profile 2.0 does not have any contact box or network box images. Those graphics from Profile 1.0 won’t be carried over. (But the banner layouts sorta works!)

2) The way you update profile is gonna be significantly different. We don’t have an automated way for a while, so people would have to manually copy and paste codes into the MySpace Profile 2.0 editor.

3) If you had CoolChaser layout from Profile 1.0, you would have to manually delete all the codes once you convert to Profile 2.0, as they disable all CSS styles and make them to plain text. (so you will have lots of nerdy codes showing up on your About me)

4) Did I tell you that you can’t use our current codes for Profile 2.0? So, we will be offering BOTH Profile 1.0 codes and Profile 2.0 codes on our site soon

EDIT:
5) Also, tiny layouts won’t work anymore, but you can shrink the layouts using MySpace’s Editor (you can select the width). And any advanced CSS won’t be carried over either, so theme creators will have to rewrite the code (or add code) for it to work on 2.0. This is because all the class names are different so you need to assign the style to the appropriate class… hope this makes sense!

We have a not quite fully tested version of our CoolChaser layout editor that works with Profile 2.0. If you’re brave enough, please help test it out at http://staging.coolchaser.com

• TIP: If an image is less than 200px by 200px, it will not be stretched out to fit the screen. You can go in step 3. More Options and choose Repeat: “BOTH” and you will see the image tiled over the whole screen. You should try this option if you click on an image and nothing seems to happen. It’s probably so small you can’t even see it until you have it tiled.

The only thing still different from the auto embed we had before is that you need to do it twice for the profile and the blog. But that’s still much less work than doing it manually, right guys?

So what’s up with the change? Remember when we said we wanted to make it as easy as possible to update MySpace layouts? Personally, I had so much trouble doing it because I just didn’t know where to paste the code on MySpace which I blogged about long time ago and realized there were so many other people with the same problem. We were kinda inspired by Slide, and thought it was really cool that they can do an auto insert to update  profiles so we tried it out ourselves. It was such a big difference! To update the profile AND blog layout was a snap, against the old fashion of way of copying and pasting codes which took much more clicking and time (only one click vs 20 clicks… I’m not exaggerating!)

So why show codes now? Yeah yeah, I’m getting there! In order to do this cool instant update profile thing, we needed to ask for people’s MySpace user name and password. Most of the people were happy but some people were concerned which we totally understood! So we blogged about how we don’t store passowrds, also wrote on the help page that we are totally a safe site, and our loyal users were so helpful in explaining to new users that we are totally a safe site too on the forum – we love you guys! xoxoxo

However, no matter how hard we explained, some people still frowned upon the fact that we ask for MySpace passwords – all of them who never tried our site thou LOL And MySpace was of course, one of them and we heard from some sources that MySpace was going to block all the sites that do that. They are suffering so much from phishing sites out there so we understand their position too.

This is some good news: people who are hesitant to use our site can thoroughly enjoy it now, and to tell you the truth, it is also a bit of a relief that we don’t have to explain how safe our site is. For those who  miss the auto insert feature, we want to work with MySpace to come up with a safe and easy-to-use tool. Please contact MySpace to tell them you love CoolChaser, so they will work with us!

Mac users, the disappearing flash widgets bug is finally fixed. That’s another reason to upgrade

It’s pretty self explanatory, but let me show you how to add themes to your favorites!

1) First make sure you are logged in (first time users, you have to create a layout first with us and then you will be logged in automatically)

2) If you see a theme that you like, you can either just use it right away, OR you can save it to your favorites for later use! I found this cool Metal Gear Solid 4 layout.

Not sure if I want to use it yet, so gonna save it to my favorites by clicking the “Add to Favorites” link on the “About this theme” box.

3) You can access what you saved in “My themes” tab.

That’s it! Isn’t that cool? This way, you can save bunch of them in there and make your final decision without flipping through many many pages to find the ones your liked before.

We are hoping to show more relevant results to “popular themes” by incorporating how many people marked a certain theme as their favorites also.

There could be some bugs, so let us know if you see things acting weird. Hope you enjoy!

Where it says “background from Yahoo search result” is the link to the original site this background image came from. Click the link to visit that site. It will open in a new window, so you don’t have to worry about losing your place in the editor. I told you it was easy!

We are switching over to comma delimited tags. Using the above example, you can tag it as “Bob Dylan songs, songs, music”. This will create three separate tags: Bob Dylan songs, songs, and music. You can use as many tags as you like. Hope it will make your life easier.

We have added a few new things you can do with Coolchaser. One of them is now you can use a small background image and tile it. The image has to be less than 200px by 200px for it to work. You will still see it all stretched out in the editor, but it will be the normal size once you put it on your profile. I thought this may be confusing since you can’t see what it will look like in the editor. So, I made a video to show you how I made a layout using this type of background.

I sound like a big nerd, but you’ll get the idea!

As usual, I couldn’t introduce all the other great Mother’s Day themes, but thanks to all of the talented people for sharing these beautiful themes!

The features are:
1. empower users to remove spam comments from their clips
2. empower group founders to remove spam comments from their groups
3. ask users to flag clips that aren’t belong to the group

That’s right, now you can remove or flag all those spams that were totally unrelated to your group.

For example, I created a group called “Clipclip tips” hoping people will share tips on how they use Clipclip back in Dec 13 2006. As of today, April 29, 2008, it had 37 spams out of 43 clips!! I asked people NOT to clip any spammy clips in the group but that didn’t stop the spammers at all Well, it took some time to remove all those damn spams but now I have my group back in control!

So those who were worried about creating a group, now you can have control over the contents so hope you create some interesting and useful groups to store your clips with your friends!

NOW :: Here is how to make your own and make it look awesome!!

First: you have to create a layout in our Layout Editor.

Second: Choose how see through you want it using “Other Options”.

Third: You have to make sure a few things. Like, make sure you can read the text. If you can’t read the text, then try picking a different theme that will contrast with your background. As a general rule pick a theme with dark text if you have a light colored background. Or pick a theme with light text if you have a dark background. *UPDATE* If you have a MAC and are using Firefox, make sure you have the latest version of Firefox in order for your layout to display correctly!
