ELECTION RULING: At the deadline a nomination for the position of Disabled Students Officer was recieved from Matthew Bond.

To stand for this position the rules state that you must be an individual student member at a students' union in NUS membership (or be a sabbatical officer) and have been so at the close of Nominations.

As at 27 January 2012 the relevant college does not regard Matthew as a current student.

Therefore I rule that he is not eligible to stand for Disabled Students' Officer and as such his nomination will be disregarded.

ELECTION RULING: At the deadline a nomination for the position of LGBT Officer Open Place was recieved from Sky Yarlett. To stand for this position the rules state that you must be an individual student member at a students' union in NUS membership (or be a sabbatical officer) and have been so at the close of Nominations.

As at 27 January 2012 the relevant college does not regard Sky as a current student. Therefore I rule that she is not eligible to stand and as such her nomination will be disregarded.

As such I have re-opened nominations for this position. Candidates are invited to apply for nomination by the 16th March 2012. Information on doing so is available on www.nusconnect.org.uk/lgbtconference under Conference Document 3a.

NUS is delighted to introduce our first event purely aimed at Lay Trustees.

With such an influx of ‘external’ trustees to the movement in the past two years we feel it is the right time to get them together to discuss their experiences of the student movement, what we can learn from them and what support they need from NUS.

The day will be split into two parts: the morning will be for recently recruited lay trustees to discuss their initial perceptions of students’ unions and understand more about the wider movement and NUS. The afternoon is then for all lay trustees to discuss their role, the future, and how we can maximise their involvement on union trustee boards. The event will close with a guest speaker from the NCVO talking about the role students’ unions can play in the wider charity sector, followed by a drinks reception sponsored by Crowe Clark Whitehill auditors.

Attendees will leave the event having developed a clearer understanding of the direction of the wider student movement, considered the role that they play on union trustee boards and planned how they can help their unions develop in the future, as well as building links with other lay trustees and organisations.

Many students and students’ union officers are active in building understanding about different religious communities, and improving relations between different religion and belief groups on campus. We want to build on this and support students’ unions to organise inter faith activities with students throughout the year.

In March we launched Building Good Inter Faith Relations – a toolkit for students’ unions to help students unions to assess the state of existing inter faith relations at their institution and consider how they might initiate activities to build good relations. The toolkit provides a series of case studies and exercises to illustrate effective models of engagement with faith groups; provide inspiration for organising your own events and projects.

This training focuses on developing students, officers and staff skills and knowledge on how to organise and facilitate successful inter faith activities. It will also take you through the toolkit and answer any questions you have or challenges you may be facing.

This training is ideal for anyone who is new to the concept of ‘inter faith’ (building good relations between people from different religions and beliefs) on campus, as well as those wanting to develop their activities further.

Who should attend?

 Full- and part-time officers

 Students’ union staff

Students leading inter faith societies, campaigns, associations or activities

The training will include:

What is inter faith all about?

Ideas and examples of inter faith activities organised by students and students’ unions

 Practical issues to consider

 Introduction to facilitating dialogue

How to create an inter faith forum

Developing your own plan of priorities and activities

If you’re not sure whether this training is suitable for you please contact Kat.Luckock@nus.org.uk for more information, or call on 07758 5969866

How much will it cost?

The training is free to attend, and NUS will cover reasonable travel expenses to and from the training if you register before 4pm, Friday 17 February.
Student media are one of the most important ways in which students learn about what is happening at their universities, making student journalism an important and responsible role. But what constitutes good journalistic practice when covering intense disputes at a local, national or international level?

When different groups adopt strongly-felt positions on complex issues, what does it mean to cover these stories in a thoughtful way? How should sources and perspectives be balanced or criticised? Where does the journalist's own political convictions fit in relation to their work? And what happens when the journalist's stories themselves become a source of controversy or complaint?

In conjunction with the University of Kent and the AHRC Religion and Society programme, NUS is supporting two, linked workshops to help those working on student media to think through these issues.

Who is it aimed at?

Anyone working in an editorial or journalistic role in any form of campus-based student media

The first workshop will explore key principles of good journalistic practice. It will also use the case of tensions over the Middle East conflict involving Palestine and Israel to explore what can be at stake in such highly emotive disputes, how and why they are perpetuated, and the challenges conflicts such as this pose for media workers.

Event Description

This year, for the first time, we are pleased to launch a new event that is being co-badged by GuildHE and UUK. Picking up the baton from one of NUS' largest events - the annual Quality Matters event - this new NUS-QAA collaborative event has been designed specifically to ask “Students as change-makers; are we equal partners in Higher Education?”.

Taking discussions around quality in Higher Education to a new level, we'll not only offer inspirational speakers, interesting conversations and new learning, but a call to action. What can course reps, student officers, and managers of rep systems actually do to ensure that students are engaged with, and impacting upon, quality in Higher Education institutions.

You can expect discussion of the risk-based approach, workshops around inspiring changes in quality using case studies of current activities in HE, the launch of some collaborative NUS-QAA work, and practical information on the new IRENI method and preparing a Student Written Submission.

The event will be held at University of Manchester Students’ Union, on 29th March 2012. It’s free to attend, you just need to register using the link below.

The Dialogue Project, is a six-month initiative (until June 2012) to support staff and students to tackle real and perceived tensions between lesbian, gay, bisexual equalities and religion and belief equalities, in FE colleges. At the heart of the project is the belief that good mutually respectful relationships between learners from different backgrounds are more likely to be developed when learners can express and explore their personal experiences, rather than rehearse fixed opposing principles.

On 26-27<sup>th</sup> March NUS is offering free training for 20 students and 20 staff from FE colleges in how to facilitate dialogue on faith and sexuality. Delegates can expect to benefit from the following;

Learning Outcomes for Staff:

Raise participants’ awareness of diverse experiences in relation to faith, belief and sexuality.

Increase participants’ knowledge about concepts and issues related to faith, belief and sexuality.

Identify proactive approaches to building understanding between students and equip staff with skills to facilitate these.

Increase confidence in effectively responding to tensions relating to faith, belief and sexuality as they arise in learning environments.

Encourage staff to consider ways to implement new strategies in their colleges through tutorial and enrichment activities.

Learning Outcomes for Students:

Raise participants’ awareness of diverse experiences in relation to faith, belief and sexuality.

Increase participants’ knowledge about concepts and issues related to faith, belief and sexuality.

Increase learners’ skills and confidence in challenging discrimination and prejudice when they encounter it in their learning environment.

Equip students with suggested activities to help counter discrimination and prejudice amongst other students.

Following this training, between April-June NUS will support 4 colleges who attend the training to develop an activity or project for learners at their college and that draws on the themes of the training. NUS will also produce a toolkit of materials FE staff and learners can use at their colleges. This will be made available in print and online at www.nusconnect.org.uk
