According to this recent NY Times story, New York 's Supreme Court just awarded $27.5 to a New York woman who lost her leg, after a Manhattan Transit Authority (MTA) bus ran it over. As a result of the pedestrian accident, the woman suffered pain and suffering, hospital amputation, multiple surgeries and a lifelong disability. The story also reminds us of a Maryland pedestrian hit while waiting a Stop sign. An interesting twist on the recent NY bus accident story is that despite the large-scale personal injury award, the jury did conclude that the woman was indeed negligent for failing to look before entering the crosswalk. Virginia Beach bloggers remind the public to be careful in pursuing cosmetic surgery, and watch out for the dangers involved in stomach stapling, formally known as Gastric Bypass Surgery. In 2008, a 36-Year old New York woman suffered wrongful death due to her doctor's malpractice. First, the New York surgeon failed to determine that the woman ought not have the surgery, as she was an unsuitable candidate. Secondly, the doctor reduced the woman's stomach down to a holding capacity of two tablespoons. The New Yorker subsequently died of liver failure and malnutrition. Her two surviving sons sued the physician for medical malpractice and wrongful death claims, and were awarded $16.8 Million. The story calls to mind several other features that we have reported. In February, we reported on a Pennsylvania family that sued and won $20 Million in a medical malpractice suit against a Pennsylvania hospital. Car Crash Injures New Jersey Family of Five. Jury Awards $17 Million.

A New Jersey family, driving down Route 9, was hit head-on, when a driver crossed the middle line and collided head-on with the Lacey New Jersey family. Personal injuries include spinal cord damage and long-term paralysis of the legs. Passengers in the victim car include parents and three children. Commuter Train Victim Gets $25.5 Million for Brain Injury

The courts in Cook County, Illinois confirmed the findings of the Notational Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). In 2005, a Metra train's human engineer was at fault for failing slow down a Chicago train from 69 to 10 miles per hour. Consequently, the train derailed, causing the wrongful death of two commuters, and injuries over 100 others. Renea Poppel who filed the lawsuit, was among the personal injury victims. She suffers wheelchair confinement, and had needed twenty-one corrective surgeries. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder from College Hazing

Unfortunately, it has happened again. And this is not the first time we have written about wild college hazing, alcohol abuse and wrongful death. A Missouri college student was allegedly emotionally and physically abused while pledging for admittance into Signa Alpha Mu, a Tulane fraternity. Several months thereafter, in May 2008, the college student drove at dangerously high speeds, while under the influence of alcohol. He crashed into a 25-year old pedestrian and caused wrongful death. Read about other pedestrian car accidents here. The Missouri college student, now serving a five-year jail sentence, filed suit against the fraternity. He claims that the fraternity members inflicted emotional and mental personal injuries upon him, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and seeks compensation for his damages.
