The Wedding Grannies

Local grandmas/chaplains Mary Beaty and Beth Lamont take their role as nontraditional, nonreligious officiants quite seriously. Their website is an excellent resource for catering, photographers, musicians, and florists—not to mention legal stuff, like how to get your license at City Hall. As humanist chaplains, they support the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which basically states that anyone, regardless of race, religion or sexual preference, has the right to marry and start their own family. The Grannies have performed weddings on a Metro-North train and at Grand Central Station at dawn (crazy-hour surcharges apply).

Gramercy Park Hotel: After the ceremony, loved the look from the groom and the dominance of the dress in the image.

Onteora Mountain House: First time the groom had a moment to take in his bride alone. bride went to adjust her hair and I saw the frame her arms were making around the groom.

Eleven Madison Restaurant: Shot a few images with all the faces in frame...and then changed it up and shot from the street pavement--for more of a city action look.

Onteora Mountain House: Loved the moment of pause, thought in the groom, prior to ceremony.

Beacon NY: Loved the depth of the image and the playful look.

Locust Grove: a crowded outdoor ceremony, with not much room on the sides to shoot. the kid was playing hide-seek with me.

Locust Grove: Again, not much room without obstruction...between the shoulders of a few guests for the first kiss.

Cat Rock: I wanted to shoot an image of the ceremony, but not from the isle with all the guests and captured this moment with Grandpa in the frame.

Cat Rock: I focused on the ladies for a few minutes, waiting for the varied emotions.

Cat Rock: Loved the moment, after ceremony, and the flow of their clothes.

The Plaza Hotel: I'm not a big-fan of limo images, but loved this moment prior to the ceremony.

Lower Manhattan: Loved the backdrop and the blue-tones that were available.

The first look, should I or shouldn’t I?

(Just my) opinions on the first look…

When I first started shooting weddings the first look was unheard of. It was rare and the only couples that saw each other before the aisle were my Jewish couples that started the ceremony with the Ketubah signing.

Now it is more common and personally I encourage it for several reasons, which I’ll touch on in a bit. First I have to ask if any of you know why its considered bad luck to see the bride before the ceremony? (Sound of crickets) …Of course not, because there is no good reason or explanation.

Although one thing I did hear is that “back in the day” when prearranged marriages were the “trend” they did not want the couple to see each other because they were afraid one would go running for the hills. I’m sure any of you reading this will NOT have to worry about that.

Paloma and Tony had their first look in the hotel room where she was getting ready.

After they rode the school bus together to the ceremony and loved every second of it.

OK, my reasons why (I think) it’s a great idea.

When the couple sees each other beforehand it’s still “that moment” it’s a beautiful time to REALLY look at one another and share a few words. With this moment the jitters and nerves seem to disappear and it’s now the both of you walking in to the ceremony as a team. He sees how beautiful you are and vice versa.
Many couples I have asked shared some interesting thoughts. One was that the couple shared a secret at the first look and when they met each other at the Altar they both knew that little secret. It made it so much more special.
Many brides were so worried about "losing" the feeling of him seeing her come down the isle. After they all told me, it was like having the feeling twice.
Another bride told me that because of the first look they felt more like partners at the ceremony. The jitters went away.

Family pictures are a must! (We all know that) Without a first look the family portraits are taken immediately following the ceremony (Or about 45 minutes later depending on a receiving line or not) slowly swallowing the cocktail hour time depending on how cooperative every one is. (We have strict guidelines on this time to help prevent it from turning into a 3 hour portrait session.) Once we finish these images, it’s on to the bridal party. Again, we try to be as quick and painless as possible and limit suggestions for pictures, otherwise 20 minutes or so can quickly turn into an hour… fast. When we’re finished we then have our romantic time… (just the 4 of us). We try and take you away from the actual party to avoid being disturbed, at this point the norm is that the couple is anxious, they want to say hello to people, they want to drink, eat, go to the bathroom. There is so much to do! OK, now we have finished and have sent the couple on their way. We then get to the reception room to try and get all of the detail shots for you (Hopefully not too many guests have wandered in yet.) The cocktail hour will be over soon, now its time to prepare for your entrance.

With a first look, things are a bit easier…

Before the ceremony I’ll get pictures of you and your gals and the groom with his men. Then on to a first look. Once that has happened we can now take care of those pesky family portraits. Done! We have a few minutes left before the ceremony, the bride and groom are welcome to freshen up, apply some lip-gloss, pop a mint etc…

After the ceremony, there may or may not be a formal receiving line. Regardless, assume a minimum of 15-20 minutes will be taken up by your guests congratulating the two of you. Or an option is, to take off with us immediately following the ceremony for a few more romantic pictures before you head into the cocktail hour. And you’re done. Free! Available to mingle with your guests. (Big sigh of relief)

Now I am not demanding you or telling you how you should do it. I just want every couple to weigh the options and not be afraid to make one decision based on old wives tales, hexes or traditions. I know you have heard this a thousand times, but I’ll say it again. It’s your wedding, you are the hosts of this event, make your decisions based on what works well for you.

Oh I hate to do this, but I figure if everyone who reads this passes it on, we'll be better off.

I keep hearing people that are moving trying to find homes for their pets... (?!) I don't get it! A pet is forever and everyone needs to take that responsibility seriously. If you know someone in this position, maybe we can help them find a place that'll suit all their needs. Or if worse comes to worse help find a new (forever) home.

The other thing I wanted to touch base on is the weather. Please take notice if you see animals left in the cold. Say something, Do something. Anything.

We need to stand up for these creatures.

50 Reasons not to Date a Photographer

Was inspired to write one of these hehe.

They rather hold their bulky camera, than hold hands with you.
On a romantic date, you’ll watch the sun go down and think “Wow this is gorgeous” and they’ll go “mirror lock, tripod, and stop down f/8 at 1/125.”
You’ll never be able to enjoy tv, movies, or magazines because they’ll point out all the visual flaws.
They like to sit in obscure coffee shop and voyeuristically watch people for great lengths of time.
If you’re taking a walk outside and you come across some “interesting light” they will make you sit/stand/pose in public so that they can take a photo.
You’ll never get to enjoy freshly cooked meals because they’ll spend 15 minutes taking 20 variations of the same dish with their iPhone.
They get angry when your friends go up to them and say “I am interested in photography, can you recommend a good camera for me? Nothing professional I just want to take pretty pictures.”
You’ll wait longer for them to finish analyzing art in a museum than you’ll wait at the dmv
Same goes with old used bookstores.
When you think they’re giving you their undivided attention, they’re really wondering how they could fix you with a little Clone Tool and Patch Tool.
Or they are actually using you to not look so creepy as they people watch everything going on around you.
They rather drop $1,000+ on new glass than a purse for you.
You can’t take a photo with them without taking at least five more.
If you ask them if you look fat, they’ll say “don’t worry I can photoshop you later.”
They’ll never photoshop something simple for you if the content is not up to their “standards.”
That photo they randomly took of you yesterday? Good luck getting them to send it to you.
They spend all their time on the computer (and not for porn.)
They can’t have a normal conversation with throwing acronyms and random numbers.
They still use film cameras.
They spend a lot of time with people cooler than you i.e. models, actors, musicians, successful rich people.
They’ll be fussy over the position of a common household object, like a coffee cup.
They won’t return your calls or text messages, but you can bet they’re still posting pics on Instagram.
They like watching old films that you’ve never heard or will ever understand.
They like looking at weird things in general.
Instead of having penis-envy, they have camera-gear-envy.
If there’s a natural disaster in a far away land, they’re already on a plane going over there.
Everything is watermarked.
They think everyone else’s photos suck.
They want to color correct a lot of scenes from Twilight and Jersey Shore.
They hate rainbows, especially ones spinning in a circle.
Whenever you’re in a group talking and the conversation goes deep, they’re taking notes in some form of Moleskin.
They use over priced Moleskin notebooks.
They like trespassing into old abandoned buildings filled with health hazards.
They always want to show a new photo they took, but don’t really care if you like it or not.
They hate your n00bie friend’s new artsy profile picture.
Bright, sunny days make them sad, but cloudy, overcast days are apparently great!
They’ll take you into places that have “culture” as well a high chance of getting mugged.
Your birthday present will be a portrait that they’ve taken of you.
You can’t go anywhere new without them stopping to take a photo of everything and anything.
They will always bug you to be a test subject.
Nothing can ever be naturally pretty, everything must be fixed in Photoshop.
Bringing their camera means, bringing 50lbs of equipment.
If you break any of their things on accident, you’ll owe them thousands of dollars.
You can’t get them a birthday/Christmas present without spending at least $500
They are natural hoarders, collecting and keeping piles of old newspapers, packaging, magazines, and other things that “inspire” them.
They are weird and geeky.
They have hard drives of photos, but probably have printed 10 images.
They are always secretly judging your creativity.
If you’re ever in auto mode, they laugh at you.
They orgasm every time they learn a new lighting technique.

The Roundhouse Beacon is one of the newest properties to host your wedding or special event in the Hudson Valley area. I asked them to give us a little more information about the renovations and what the space will eventually look like. I’m really excited to see the finished space! It looks incredible! The ceilings are extremely tall, the space is open and airy. Which makes the decorating possibilities endless.

I also LOVE the fact that they are building it with the environment in mind and that it’s something old being renovated and rejuvenated. Because they will have a beautiful hotel right on the premises, it’s the perfect option for the weekend wedding getaway for all of your guests!

What inspired the start Roundhouse Beacon?

Give us a little background info on the history of the property and what is in store for the future.

The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls sits on approximately six acres of land next to the Fishkill Creek in Beacon, New York. It consists of the renovation and adaptive re-use of several historic structures on the former Matteawan Manufacturing Company, an early textile mill. The property was also the home of the first lawnmower factory in the United States, and was later used as a hat factory before falling vacant and being purchased by The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls development team in 2010. When complete, the property will boast a 58-room boutique hotel with a luxury spa, a fine dining restaurant and lounge serving locally inspired, seasonal cuisine and artisanal cocktails, and a unique catering event space (The Waterfall Room) capable of hosting seated events for up to 250 people.

The site is being built according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards, and will be partially powered by a historic hydroelectric plant that is being refurbished as part of the project.

The Waterfall Room, which is situated in the oldest building on the property, opens up to a wraparound terrace with beautiful views of Fishkill Creek and Mount Beacon. Great care is being taken to restore The Waterfall Room. With its high ceilings, wood beams, exposed brick walls and floor-to-ceiling windows, the room will be a timeless backdrop for a celebration of a lifetime. The room also overlooks a naturally landscaped garden, which is a perfect spot for a wedding ceremony.

Some of the few historic industrial buildings remaining in Beacon, The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls holds a special place in many Beaconites’ hearts. Restored to its former glory and outfitted with modern conveniences, The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls will be a remarkable place to celebrate a special occasion, stay the night or enjoy dinner and cocktails with one-of-a-kind views.

When do you plan to have the construction complete?

Construction on the catering event space (The Waterfall Room) will be complete by Summer of 2012. We are already booking weddings for 2012 and beyond.

Is the catering on site? What comes with the rental of the facility?

All catering will be done on-site and led by Executive Chef, Brandon Collins. Collins brings a locally inspired, seasonal and modern interpretation of food and cocktails to the property. A native of Dayton, Ohio and a 2001 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Collins has been cooking in the Hudson Valley since 2002. After spending a year running kitchens in Cincinnati, he was hired as a sous chef at The Garrison. He was an integral part of the opening team at their Valley Restaurant and eventually became the Co-Executive Chef of the property. After nine years with Valley, Collins has taken the lead in the kitchen at The Roundhouse. “Understanding where your food is coming from and why food and drink react the way that they do is half of the excitement of cooking,” Collins says.

All wedding packages include the use of chairs, linens, china and flatware. They also include a wedding cake, a champagne toast, tableside wine service, a complimentary overnight guest room, a bridal changing room, coat check and printed directions and menu cards. 5 Wedding Traditions... Yes or No?

A Great article was written by Justine Schwartz of BRIDE Finds. I thought it would be fun to post the article and give my own thoughts.

"Watch any episode of "America's Funniest Home Videos" and you'll see at least one side-splitting wedding clip -- usually from the early 90s -- with some puffy-sleeved bride taking a dive during the first dance or a mob of single women knocking each other out over the bouquet toss.

These are the staples of a traditional wedding -- the first dance, the garter and bouquet tosses, the smearing of the wedding cake. And they're not just fodder for wedding bloopers -- generation after generation, couples have followed them thinking that the blueprint of a good wedding had to have each one.

But few of us actually know where these traditions come from or, quite frankly, if we even enjoy them. In recent years, more and more couples, like my husband and I, have thrown out our parents' formula and created new traditions of our own -- like hand-written vows, unity candles, joint bachelor parties, and other unconventional ways of celebrating.

Here are five traditions that I jettisoned -- none of which were missed by our friends and family. If you're having trouble fitting them into your big day, here's why it's OK to ditch them altogether:

The First Dance
Don't get me wrong -- my groom and I love to dance. But we're more likely to bust out the robot than a slow waltz. Our mutual lack of adolescent dance classes isn't totally to blame -- we both agreed that we'd rather get everyone on the dance floor right away than do the fox trot in a fishbowl. And our 12-piece funk band agreed.

Ok, the first dance... I LOVE it! IF and only if, it is full of emotion. There is nothing worse than a couple awkwardly trying to remember dance moves. This is not a dance recital, it's your wedding. I only ask that every couple give me maybe 90 seconds and then invite everyone up. Have fun with it, it is not meant to be a "show" so relax.

The Garter Belt
There is absolutely nothing more awkward than your 90-year old great aunt watching your husband pull a lacy piece of lingerie from under your wedding dress with his teeth. Need I say more?

NO... Just no. Thats all.

The Receiving Line
While it is, technically, the most efficient way to thank guests, a receiving line wasn't the way my husband and I wanted to give our friends and family face time. We skipped the conveyor belt system, and tried to make more personal and impromptu visits with as many groups as we could. For everyone we missed, a simple thank you note after the wedding worked just fine.

Why waste 45 minutes when you're going to be going around to tables anyway. There is a reason that people did receiving lines. It was because the couple normally left the church and took off for their honeymoon. It was the only time the guests could congratulate the couple.

Something I think is a fantastic idea happened at Adrian and Robs wedding October 22nd. They spent cocktail hour with their guests and then when the room was opened, the two of them welcomed the guests as they came in. The line went quickly and it was a warm and inviting way to "Welcome" your guests in for the next portion of the night.

Cake Smear
You wouldn't start a food fight at the Met Ball, so why engage in such juvenile behavior at your wedding? It's a formal affair, so have a little class, people. Plus, it's not worth ruining those faux lashes you paid for.

Again NO. Really. Remember it is not a sweet 16, it is not a frat party, it's a wedding!

The Bouquet Toss
No wedding movie would be complete without an awesomely aggressive girl fight over the bouquet toss. Desperate unmarried women, fearing spinsterhood, clawing and elbowing each other over a handful of flowers is comic gold. Let's not make our female friends feel any more single than they already do -- eliminate the toss and preserve your bouquet instead. There will be plenty of time to set your girls up after the wedding."

I actually don't mind the bouquet toss. If its done tastefully. If you happen to have an obnoxious DJ who is just itching to embarrass all your gals then skip it. Impromptu is better. Toss it over a balcony or present it to a special woman at your wedding.

We'll talk later about the unity candle.... and a few other "Classic" traditions.

When you walked into the back house all you could smell were the apples, it was such a perfect way to display their guest cards. And before the ceremony everyone was met with hot apple cider which was very welcome on such a chilly afternoon.

We felt so much joy and excitement at Adrian and Rob's wedding. It was truly thought through so amazingly and it showed from the tiniest detail to the smiles on all their guests faces.

I have never witnessed the water ceremony before. Their guests were from all over the world including Paris, NY, Pennsylvania and even Brooklyn! They merged the water from everywhere into a watering pot, watered a small tree that they will then plant at their summer home in the Hudson Valley

I started using Apple computers in 1994 during my first Adobe Photoshop classes. Its how I learned how to use a computer.

It was funny, over the course of the next few years when I took jobs that used PCs I was like "What the hell is this?" Obviously I was adept at using both, but I never understood why a PC was so darned stupid.

I am now on my 6th apple computer and all I can say is that in a weird way, it did shape me in the way I do things, in the way I see things and in the way I think. I guess early on when you're using Apple instead of the norm and your peers are looking at you like you're playing with a toy, you're constantly defending yourself.

And now I walk into an Apple store trying to get through the hordes of folks and their damn Iphones and I think, Wow, what happened... there was once only a few of us.

With the passing of Steve Jobs, I hope that Apple stays true to what it has always been. I hope it stays an innovative company and I will continue to worship at the Church of Apple.

Thank you for 17 years of making me try to at least be, a little more creative.

Hey Kids. Just a reminder, when you're having your first dance or walking up or down the aisle. Don't have a conversation about the following...

My dress is too tight
The limo was late
Its too hot
Look who didn't show up
I didn't like the appetizers
The officiant sucked
My shoes hurt
The flowers were not the right shade of green...
