NY Giants Super Bowl Victory Parade

As many as one million fans cheered as the Super Bowl XLVI champions made their way up the Canyon of Heroes in Lower Manhattan for the Super Bowl victory parade on Tuesday, February 7th. NYC Photo News was there to cover all the action.

Eli Manning, joined by coach Tom Coughlin, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other teammates, waved and grinned from the lead float as the victors, friends, and family were showered with at least 30 tons of confetti from buildings lining Broadway. Several local bands, including the NYPD Marching Band joined the procession.

The Department of Sanitation worked hard to keep the discarded paper under control during and after the parade and the NYPD did a terrific job managing the crowds.

Lunar New Year Parade in Flushing, Queens

The Lunar New Year parade celebrating the "Year of the Dragon" was held on Saturday, February 4, 2012 in Queens and New York Photo News as there to capture the event.

Although members of Falun Gong (Falan Dafa) were banned from Manhattan's parade the previous week, they were out in full force for the Flushing, Queens event with a large marching band, a float, dancing dragons and a drum corps. Also present was a large contingent from Sinovision, the mainland China news agency.

Flushing is home to one of the largest East Asian populations in New York City rivaling Manhattan's Chinatown. Korean-Americans were also well represented in the parade.

NYC Photo News photographers were at the Chinese Lunar New Year parade on January 29th as Chinese-Americans ushered in "The Year of the Dragon." True to form the parade was an eclectic mix of floats, beauty queens, marching bands with an Hispanic dance group thrown in for good measure.

The People's Republic of China was well represented and rumors circulated that the reason no Falon Gong marchers were allowed was because of the mainland China presence. A police officer confided to one of our photographers that there was a special unit assigned to keep Falon Gong marchers out of the parade. More photos at www.nycphotonews.com

Several hundred demonstrators gathered at Union Square Park for an "Occupy 4 Jobs" rally and march on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As the march threaded its way around Union Square Park more and more police were added to the mix. At various points along the way police would arrest a couple demonstrators.

By the end of the march police officers outnumbered demonstrators by a wide margin.

Three Kings Day in East Harlem Marks the End of the Christmas Season

NYC Photo News was there as New York City celebrated Three Kings Day with a parade in East Harlem.

The day, also known as the Epiphany, celebrates the biblical journey of the three kings to Bethlehem who brought the baby Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh and is widely celebrated in Spanish-speaking countries.

The parade route stretched from 106th St. and Madison Ave. to 115th St and Park Ave. and featured politicians, floats, camels, a marching band, and multiple "Three Kings" including three stilt-walking kngs.

The parade was sponsored by El Museo del Barrio.

Police Free Wall Street Bull

The police freed the famous Wall Street Bull from the barricades surrounding it on Monday, January 2nd, if only for a brief time.

After three months behind barricades, the famous statue was temporarily set free for a ceremony commemorating the 22nd anniversary of this popular tourist attraction in New York's financial district. During the short time it was free tourists flocked to the statue to have their pictures taken with the iconic statue.

The three-and-a-half ton bronze statue has been off limits to the public since the Occupy Wall Street protests began in September. Police feared that the statue could be damaged so barricades were placed around it for its protection.

After the ceremony the barricades were quickly put back in place.

NYC Photo News was their as crowds of tourists surrounded the statue.

Polar Bears Invade Coney Island for Annual New Year's Day Swim

More than 1,200 intrepid bathers made the dash into the ocean at Coney Island, wearing everything from bikinis to Santa suits, as thousands of spectators cheered from the beach during the annual New Year's Day swim.

The Polar Bears, who were used to braving wind, snow, and subzero temperatures on the Coney Island beach, were instead treated to a balmy 51-degree day. The water was a bit chillier at 45 degrees.

They came in all shapes, sizes, genders, and ages and NYC Photo News was there both in the water and on the beach.

New York City police officers have apparently become so fed-up with Occupy Wall Street protesters that they are not only arresting activists, photographers and journalists as they have been doing. They are now attacking fellow cops according, to an article in pixiq.com.

While we were at the protest at Duarte Park on December 17th, we witnessed no such activity although we left before people scaled the fence and entered the park.

Santas Get Their Metro Passes

The annual SantaCon festivities kicked-off in Manhattan at the World Financial Center on Saturday, December 11th. As Santas from all parts gathered at the dockside plaza, elves, reindeer, grinches, and penguins could also be seen mingling with the crowd.

Around noon the assembled Santas and cohorts began to spread out across lower Manhattan, searching for a pub that wasn't already crammed with Santas.

For Filipinos, an Abrupt Directive Alters a Christmas Ritual

Those who complain that the Christmas season starts earlier and earlier each year might find solace in hearing how Filipinos traditionally celebrate the season — theirs can stretch from as early as September to late January.

“We have the longest Christmas season, and we go all-out,” said Aurora Aquino, a Filipino-born fashion designer. “Christmas is a very big deal for Filipinos.”

Ms. Aquino was holding an umbrella decorated into a highly adorned canopy, as were a few other women marching with dozens of Filipino immigrants through the streets of Midtown to St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Saturday night.

The procession was something of a kickoff to Simbang Gabi, a nine-day Roman Catholic ritual observed before Christmas in the Philippines. Masses during Simbang Gabi can begin as early as 4 a.m., a tradition that is said to date back centuries, to the time when Filipino farmers under Spanish rule had to rise early to find time to worship before toiling in the fields. This year, the nine days of Masses begins Wednesday.

Pianist Colin Huggins Has Received Nine Summonses in Washington Square Park as of 1/7/2012

Colin Huggins was there with his baby grand, the one he wheels into Washington Square Park for his al fresco concerts. So were Tic and Tac, a street-performing duo, who held court in the fountain — dry for the winter. And Joe Mangrum was pouring his elaborate sand paintings on the ground near the Washington Arch.

In other words, it was a typical Sunday afternoon in the Greenwich Village park, where generations of visitors have mingled with musicians, artists, activists, poets and buskers.

Yet this fall, that urban harmony has grown dissonant as the city’s parks department has slapped summonses on the four men and other performers who put out hats or buckets, for vending in an unauthorized location — specifically, within 50 feet of a monument.

The department’s rule, one of many put in place a year ago, was intended to control commerce in the busiest parks. Under the city’s definition, vending covers not only those peddling photographs and ankle bracelets, but also performers who solicit donations.

Street artist Joe Mangrum has received more than $4,000 in summonses since the crackdown began

The rule attracted little notice at first. But the enforcement in Washington Square Park in the past two months has generated summonses ranging from $250 to $1,000. And it has started a debate about the rights of parkgoers seeking refuge from the bustle of the streets versus those looking for entertainment.

At a news conference in the park on Sunday organized by NYC Park Advocates, the artists waved fistfuls of pink summonses while their advocates, including civil rights lawyers, called on the city to stop what they called harassment of the performers.

NYC Photo News Photographer Cited for "Excessive Photography" in Bryant Park

One of the "excessive" photos taken on Sunday by a NYC Photo News photographer in Bryant Park

One of our photographers reports that he was asked to stop taking photos at the Bryant Park skating rink on Sunday afternoon. He says a security guard had been watching him and remarked he had been taking "an excessive number of photos" of skaters in the Bryant Park ice rink.

When our photographer pointed out that Bryant Park was a public space and it was his constitutional right to take photographs there--as many as he wanted--the security guard said he was only following orders. Our photographer then asked if it would make a difference if he were a member of the press and the guard replied that would make all the difference. The photographer asked to speak to the guard's supervisor but he/she could not be located.

Since out photographer was trying out a new fisheye lens he had just purchased and was finished for the day so he did not pursue the matter.

According to the ACLU, "Taking photographs of things that are plainly visible from public spaces is a constitutional right..." We always thought so but someone needs to inform the Bryant Park Conservancy.

Calls to the Bryant Park Conservancy for comment were not returned.

We would love to hear from photographers with similar experiences.

The 2011 New York City Marathon was won in record time by Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai and NYC Photo News was there as runners passed the 22 mile mark on Fifth Avenue.

Kenyans and Ethiopians dominated the men's and women's divisions with Ethiopia's Firehiwot Dado beat Kenya's Mary Keitany after trailing her for much of the 2011 women's race. We have photos of both runners as well as most of the top finishers.

Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular

The 2011 Macy's fireworks show tonight features more than 40,000 shells exploding at a rate of 1,500 per minute with some fireworks soaring to heights of 1,000 feet above the Hudson River. Our photographers were there and captured these shots from the river's edge in Weekawken..

Our photographer reports that some folks in Weehawken were not the most hospitable New Jerseyians he had ever met. Most of shoreline was closed-off and very limited space was available to watch the fireworks near the Port Imperial Ferry terminal. It seems that developers along the west side of the Hudson have rather dubiously claimed the shoreline for themselves and were barring access with an army of private security guards and a personal visit from the mayor of Weehawken.

2011 Nathans Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest

Joey Chestnut of San Jose, CA and Sonya Thomas of Alexandria, VA earned the titles of Men’s and Women’s Hot Dog Eating World Champions today at the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, held annually at the original Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island.

Our photographer was there to capture all the action as Chestnut downed 62 hot dogs in ten minutes and Thomas consumed 40 dogs and buns to claim the first-ever women's title.

The contest has been held every year since 1916. This year's event was the first time male and female eaters competed separately for the titles. Mermaids Waiting for the Parade to Begin

This year's Mermaid Parade in Coney Island was on Saturday, June 18th. Officially, the Mermaid Parade “celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island,” not to mention individualism, artistic self-expression, and partial nudity. And, of course, whenever there is nudity there will be photographers--so many of them that it was almost impossible to take a shot without getting a photographer in the background..

The 54 annual Puerto Rican Day Parade moved up Fifth Avenue from 45th to 79th Streets on Sunday, June 12th. This year Parade highlighted the town of Cabo Rojo in their celebration of their 240th year and Patilla celebrating their 200th year as a city. There was some confusion about our press credentials and, since security was tight, we were forced to photograph the parade from the sidelines. It would not have been such a great inconvenience had it not been for the hundreds of police officers who blocked most our view of the parade.

We were finally forced to turn to our "skycam", a Canon G11 on a monopod with a wired remote. We were able to hold the camera above the crowd and get some interesting shots.

Hare Krishna Parade 2011

The Hare Krishna parade is the only parade in Manhattan where the police to not close off the streets. The parade takes place on Fifth Avenue with live traffic moving by. That's because the Krishna's went to court and won the right to use 5th Avenue as a parade route after the New York City powers-that-be decided that there would be no more parades allowed.

Watching the tall floats go by

These kids are staring at one of the large floats being pulled down Fifth Avenue by Krishna followers. The tall constructions on the floats collapse so they can make it under traffic lights and low handing wires.

New York City has the largest population of Krishna followers in the United States and judging from the large number of strollers in the parade there will be a new generation coming soon.

The parade started at 45th Street and wound its way down Fifth Avenue to Washington Square Park, with cross streets blocked and a lane of live traffic streaming by on the right.

When the parade reached Madison Square Park it encountered a barbecue festival in progress and even though it had started to rain, throngs of barbecue lovers lined the street to watch the parade.

In the photo below, barbecue lovers with wearing pig ears watch one of the parade floats pass by. I know the followers of Lord Krishna are vegetarians so it seemed a bit ironic that the parade took this particular route on this particular day.

Over 30,000 participants marched up Fifth Ave. from 57th St. to 74th St. cheered by hundreds of thousands of spectators from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and New York Photo News was there to cover the event

Mayor Bloomberg joined Govenor Andrew Cuomo, Police Commisioner Raymond Kelly, Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Lautenberg, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and others in the parade marking Israel's 63rd year of independence. Notable in his absence was embattled Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner of Brooklyn and Queens who is usually a fixture at the parade but nycphotonews.com has plenty of photos of him at other events.

There were several Grand Marshalls including real estate developer and founder of Thor Equities, Joseph Sit, Israel’s consul general in New York, Ido Aharoni, and Israel’s minister of information and diaspora, Yuli Edelstein.

At 59th and Fifth Avenue the sidewalk on the west side of the street was filled with two groups of protesters who have appeared each year: anti-Zionist ultra-Orthodox Jews who oppose Israel’s existence and supporters of a Palestinian state who hoisted their red, black, white, and green flags. The ultra-Orthodox Jews also waved Palestinian flags as marchers harangued the protesters and the NYPD worked hard to keep everything under control.
