Generating extra buzz around marketing campaigns worldwide is 3D projection mapping, a relatively new technology that animates stationary objects with 3D video. With added sound effects and music, the result is a remarkable and immersive experience.

“Projection mapping can provide a great double whammy if used right, because you get a great live event, followed by a compelling video and PR opportunities. But, if that’s the aim it’s important to think about the film when planning the projection — the sense of scale you get live won’t be replicated on YouTube,” cautions Matt Smith, director of strategy for The Viral Factory.

“Good camera work, slick editing, and a rocking soundtrack will all help drive the film, but if the projection is too detailed it will still get lost.”

New Banksy's and More at MOCA's Art in the Streets

Today, we witnessed history being made. As the very first major U.S. museum exhibition of graffiti and street art, MOCA presented the media preview of Art in the Streets, an epic visual feast you must experience for yourself! Tracing the development of graffiti and street art from the '70s to where it is today, MOCA pulled out all the stops - educating us on the rich history, entertaining us with their "shows within a show" (live skateboarding, a re-creation of an urban street, etc) and inspiring us to find the artist within ourselves.

Of course, the highlight of it all is seeing the art we've featured over and over again on My Modern Met, up close and personal. Though the MOCA is filled will incredible art and photos around every corner, we couldn't help but spend a large portion of our time hanging out around original works by our favorites - Banksy and Brazilian duo Os Gemeos.

For almost four months, April 17 to August 8, 2011, Art in the Streets will be open to the public. Spend a good part of your day here to really take in all that this show has to offer. With so much to see, trust us when we say, our pictures do not do this show justice.

Cool Fact: Banksy's 23-foot high Stained Window piece (first image in this post) is a collaboration with the City of Angels public school in Los Angeles. Students were encouraged to write tags on panels erected in their schoolyard before Banksy adapted them.

Selling design is very different from selling tall skinny lattés, boxes of cereal, or tubes of toothpaste, unless you own a logo warehouse that is. Great design is not a mere commodity and this is what makes differentiating your product a challenge at times. As a designer would you want it any other way?  

Many designers struggle to define their product because it is more than just the sum of its’ parts, logo, website or layout. Your product is something pretty special. You give form to ideas. Your ‘art’ is the ability to take something abstract or imagined and create the visual connection which helps the world to make sense of that idea, product or company. Designers are the conduit between the imagined and reality. You are not just selling logos, identities and websites. You are enabling your client to tell their story better.

It doesn’t matter what product you choose to market there are three steps to understanding the placement of the kind of product you want to sell to the type of customers you want to attract.  

1. Understand yourself

What do you love to do? 
Why do you do what you do? 
What do you care about and believe in? 
What are your strengths? 
What are your weaknesses? 
How can you best play to your strengths? 
How will you mitigate against your weaknesses? 
Who do you want to work with? 
Which designers do you admire and why?
How could you emulate some of what they have done to become successful? 
How are you different? 
What will make you better?

 2. Understand your target market

Who is your ideal client? 
Where will you find them?
How will you reach them? 
What drives them? 
How do they choose? 
What communication channels do they use? 
How can you nurture professional relationships? 
How can you package your product to meet the worldview of the audience you are trying to reach? 
What are the tools you will need to create a presence in your chosen market? 
Are you designing for everyone or perhaps creating things that some might dislike? 
Are you asking people to switch to you or are you creating a whole new market? 
Why would I buy from you and not the designer who ranks in the top ten in Google?

  3. Understand how to differentiate your product

What story does your product tell? 
Does your story really define what you do?
What makes your design stand out? 
What makes your work blend in?
How is your product different?
How is your service special?
Are you delivering on your promise, original, unique, timeless, flexible, enduring?
Can you create a new market and do something that hasn’t been done before?
Can you reinvent something that’s already been done and do it better?
What is selling right now? 
What’s not selling today that could sell if it was marketed in new ways tomorrow? 
Could you produce something that’s scalable?
Is it possible to create scarcity? 
What makes your product remarkable? 
Does your design start conversations?
If not how could you make that happen?

Pornographic films, websites and magazines all plough the same furrow – the repetition of the same act, in all its variations. Where they differ is their opening sequencem the patently fake and false scenarios, which are an afterthought to the main event. The latest issue of Useful Photography celebrates these opening scenes, often cliche, somtimes bizarrely inventive, but always supremely fake.

Taken out of context, (without the pornographic scenes that follow) they tell a different story. A story of amateur acting, and showcasing the talents of actors not usually noted for their acting.

Here I have compiled some simple tools I've gotten great use in my profession as agraphic designer. This means that not only can be used by designers, but otherswho need to send files that are too large for e-mail systems, or for those who willneed help to produce a magazine they've made in a reasonable manner. There areof course several simple solutions to small problems you did not know wereproblems, so in the future I'll try to find more simple solutions, but these are the toolsI would recommend for the time being. blublu is one of my favorite street art and graffiti, if one can call it graffiti. He makes"simple" illustrations, both huge and tiny.

Here is a stop motion film he has made, and there are films like this that really set my eyes out for this amazing artist.
