NZEI members visited thirty Government MPs as part of nation-wide activities on Friday 17 April, demanding bargaining for support staff and kindergarten members begin urgently. NZCTU - Don't Privatise ACC

The National/ACT Government has invented a “crisis” around ACC so they can open it up to private insurance companies, just as they did in 1999. If this happened, you would probably have to pay higher insurance premiums. It would also likely be harder and take longer for you to get compensation if you had an accident. Don’t be fooled by National/ACT’s public relations spin about ACC. Experts have been queuing up to challenge their arguments.

Guidelines for entitlement to rest breaks in the ECE and Compulsory Education Sectors

NZEI Te Riu Roa, various sector groups and the Ministry of Education have been in discussion over the impact of an amendment to the Employment Relations Act that introduced a statutory entitlement to rest breaks. These documents outlinine some broad guidance on the issue for the ECE and Compulsory Education sectors.

Taumata Whanonga - Video coverage

The Taumata Whanonga was held at Te Papa on 16 and 17 March 2009. Planned by the Ministry of Education in conjunction with representatives of various organisations, it focussed on behaviour issues in schools and early childhood centres. Happy New Year from NZEI Te Riu Roa. We wish you all the best!

2009 will be a big year for NZEI members. School support staff head into bargaining, seeking a fair deal that addresses their low pay. Negotiation of the kindergarten teachers' collective agreement begins soon. We are also keen to talk to primary teacher and principal members throughout the year about "big picture" issues like workload, career progression and the teacher shortage - ahead of collective bargaining early in 2010.

And because we're taking on a lot, we need to grow our membership. Please remember to encourage new staff or non-members to join NZEI.

MR 2009/01 - Kindergarten Teachers seek first exemption from 90 day trial periods

NZEI is seeking to ensure kindergarten teachers do not face a 90 day trial period when they start a new job. The kindergarten teachers’ claim, lodged on 20 January 2009, will be the first employment claim to respond to the National Government’s controversial 90 Day legislation.
