      <title>US Education Secretary pledges safe schools for LGBT students</title>

      <description><![CDATA[(Washington) Education Secretary Arne Duncan has told a gay student advocacy group that he intends to make schools safe for every student, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Duncan made the pledge during a meeting with representatives of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and a delegation of students and  teachers. In the United States, Biennial National School Climate Surveys repeatedly show that LGBT students experience extreme harassment.<br />

This year SS4Q, teacher unions NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA Te Wehengarua along with Family Planning NZ, Intersex Trust Aotearoa NZ, and the NZ AIDS Foundation joined forces to make our schools safe for ALL students, by promoting February 25 2009 as New Zealand's first Pink Shirt Day.<br />
