Family Planning Workshop: Teaching sexual and gender diversity and creating inclusive environments

Are you motivated to create safer spaces for students of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities? This one day workshop is designed to show you how. You will get great advice on how to teach these topics, with a strong focus on practical activities. The course is structured around Family Planning’s Affirming Diversity resource. July 21 2010, Wellington, $60 per person.

EI endorses UN statement on sexual orientation and gender identity

EI reaffirms the principle of non-discrimination and call all education unions to "take concrete actions to prevent all forms of discrimination, including but not limited to sexism, homophobia, transphobia and intolerance, within unions, at work and in the education sector".

Guidelines for entitlement to rest breaks in the ECE and Compulsory Education Sectors

NZEI Te Riu Roa, various sector groups and the Ministry of Education have been in discussion over the impact of an amendment to the Employment Relations Act that introduced a statutory entitlement to rest breaks. These documents outlinine some broad guidance on the issue for the ECE and Compulsory Education sectors.

US Education Secretary pledges safe schools for LGBT students

(Washington) Education Secretary Arne Duncan has told a gay student advocacy group that he intends to make schools safe for every student, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Duncan made the pledge during a meeting with representatives of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and a delegation of students and teachers. In the United States, Biennial National School Climate Surveys repeatedly show that LGBT students experience extreme harassment.

Taumata Whanonga - Video coverage

The Taumata Whanonga was held at Te Papa on 16 and 17 March 2009. Planned by the Ministry of Education in conjunction with representatives of various organisations, it focussed on behaviour issues in schools and early childhood centres. Pink Shirt Stories

New Zealand's first Pink Shirt Day was held on February 25 2009

This year SS4Q, teacher unions NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA Te Wehengarua along with Family Planning NZ, Intersex Trust Aotearoa NZ, and the NZ AIDS Foundation joined forces to make our schools safe for ALL students, by promoting February 25 2009 as New Zealand's first Pink Shirt Day.
