Stop the Abuse of Women Around the World

Did you know that one out of every three women in the world will be sexually or physically abused in her lifetime? In countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, rape and other forms of sexual violence have become weapons of war. But this is not just a problem in war-torn areas, but also in stable places like El Salvador, where violence rates against women are three times higher than the world average.

The US has an obligation to do everything in its power to make sure physical abuse against women is reduced and ultimately eliminated. That’s why Oxfam is supporting a bill that would make a significant investment in ending violence against women worldwide. The bill needs Republican supporters in the House, and that is why we are calling on you today. Can you help convince Congress to do the right thing?

The International Violence Against Women Act would increase the US government’s role in ending violence against women around the world. The bill would direct the president to develop a comprehensive strategy to prevent violence against women and girls internationally and provide funding for programs to end the cycle of violence.

Oxfam has been working on gender violence issues for years in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo and El Salvador, and we know how critical this bill could be for women around the world. Please stand with us in pushing for this essential piece of legislation.

Thank your Representative For Standing Up For the World's Poor

US foreign aid has saved millions of lives and helped millions more overcome poverty. Yet, aid often fails to reach the people who need it most: the two and half billion people who survive on less than two dollars a day. Your member of Congress has helped draft a measure in Congress that would commit Members to reforming foreign aid and we need your help to make sure it passes.

Thank your Member of Congress for their commitment to reforming US foreign aid.

US foreign aid in the 21st century has become slow, bureaucratic, and fragmented. Built almost fifty years ago in response to the Cold War US foreign aid needs to be reformed tomake it more efficient, more modern, and more focused on ending global poverty.

Rep. Betty McCollum of Minnesota, Rep. John Tierney of Massachusetts, and Rep. Chris Shays of Connecticut have authored a resolution that would commit its Members to fundamental reform of US foreign aid. This resolution reflects the consensus recommendations of the U.S. foreign policy community, congressionally mandated commissions, development experts and think tanks. And most importantly, it proposes a fresh new vision for America’s foreign aid: a positive and pragmatic re-engagement with our increasingly interconnected world.

Thank your member of Congress for supporting fundamental reform of U.S. foreign assistance.
