Guided School Tours and End-of-Grade Testing

Artapalooza Raffle Tickets on Sale This Week

It's almost here! You can get a sneak peek at this year's raffle baskets this week from 11:00am-1:30pm Tuesday through Friday. They will be on display outside the PTA office between the School Office and the Gym. You can also pre-purchase raffle tickets, t-shirts, and wristbands for Saturday at those times.

Field Day Update for April 23

Due to a sudden, brief, and unexpected hailstorm, we had to postpone Field Day for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes on Tracks 2 & 4 (plus Mrs. Beech and Mrs. Scala). We will reschedule for Wednesday, April 25, 2012 from 9:30-11:30am.

We are still short some volunteers and may need additional help due to people not being able to come as originally planned.

Order 2012-13 School Supplies Online

School supply kits for next school year can now be ordered online. This is not a fundraiser for the Olive Chapel PTA, but rather a service it provides. You may also shop for supplies on your own. Supply lists will be posted in this blog and also on the school main page when they are available.

Field Day Update

Field Day for Tracks 1 & 3 will take place as scheduled on Tuesday, April 17.

Due to anticipated weather this week, Field Day for Tracks 2 & 4 has been rescheduled for Monday, April 23.

On both days, Kindergarten through 2nd grade will enjoy Field Day activities from 9:30 to 11:30 am. 3rd-5th grade will go from 1:00-3:00pm. Mrs. Beech's and Mrs. Scala's first grade classes will have Field Day on Monday, April 23 upon returning from their field trip.

Boosterthon Pledge Collection [UPDATE]

Here’s a updated on Boosterthon so far:
Over 80% of all families pledged for the Boosterthon, and we have pledges from over 40 states and 6 countries! Best of all, every student at OCE got to run in the Boosterthon Fun Run and kept their All Star Jersey from the Boosterthon Team!

We have collected only 54% of the pledges made which is a great start. Let’s keep the ball rolling over our long weekend as there will be more and more collection rounds as we track in and out down the road. Please help our PTA and our school raise funds for technology improvements: laptops, Smartboards, and iPads at OCE!

The next due date for all pledges is April 23rd (or anytime before that if you Track Out the week before). Thank you for your support and generosity towards Olive Chapel PTA with the Boosterthon Fun Run program!

Track 2 & 4 Boosterthon Fun Run is Friday - all parents are welcome

Friday is the big day! The Boosterthon Fun Run for all Track 2 and 4 classes will be Friday on the half day of school. Every student in Track 2 and 4 gets to run in the Boosterthon Fun Run and keep their Boosterthon All Star Jersey!

Thursday is the last night to get pledges for the Track 2 and 4 program. Enter your pledges at http://funrun.com using the access code on the front of your child's pledge map.

You are invited to the Boosterthon! Please come out and cheer on your student as they run for their goal of 30 laps on the Boosterthon Speedway! The more noise you make, the faster they run, the faster they run, the earlier they go to bed on a Friday! Come cheer them on!!

Boosterthon Fun Run - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What exactly is the Boosterthon Fun Run?
The Boosterthon Fun Run is this semester’s biggest fundraising initiative. The students will be getting pledges for the laps they run at the Boosterthon Fun Run. Funds raised from this event go towards this year’s PTA budget.
How many laps will students run?
The Boosterthon speedway is 1/16th of a mile, half of the size of a normal elementary track. The average student will run 25-35 laps. The most any student will be counted for is 35 laps.
Can students receive a prize for flat donations?
Yes! All flat donations count toward pledges and are rounded by 30 (the average student will run ~30 laps). Thus, a $30 donation is the same as $1/lap, a $60 donation is the same as $2/lap, etc.
How do students make pledges?
Students can make pledges online using their access code at http://funrun.com. You can find your Access Code on the Pledge Map that came home with your child. If a student’s family does not have internet access, they can fill out the student’s pledge-map and bring it back to school every day that student gets a pledge.
Can sponsors pay for pledges online?
YES. Sponsors have the option to pay online. Only pledges that have an email address attached to it can be paid for through the credit card option.
When is the pledge money due?
Pledge money is due on Thursday, April 5 for students on Tracks 1, 2, and 3 and on Monday, April 23 for students on Track 4. Students should NOT bring money in until after the Boosterthon event. Students will call their sponsors to let them know how many laps they ran. Sponsors can pay online or send their checks/cash in by the due date. All checks are made out to Olive Chapel Elementary PTA.

Welcome Ashore: OCE Land Lubbers Running Club

Attention 3rd, 4th and 5th graders of OCE! Do you want to increase your fitness while having fun doing it? Then you should join the Land Lubbers which is OCE’s running club. During our weekly runs, we will work on building endurance and speed while fostering a love of running. The club will begin on Tuesday, March 20th and meet weekly from 3:45-4:45 until June 5th. The runners must be picked up promptly at 4:45 in the bus parking loop. All interested participants need to complete the on-line registration at http://ocelandlubbers.blogspot.com.

Parent volunteers are welcome to join us. Runners need to provide their own running shoes, shorts, sun block, water bottle, etc. Mr. Shillings, Mrs. Stauffer, and Mrs. Sweitzer look forward to seeing you on the track.

Leap Into Literacy Week Starts Monday

It's a big week coming up at OCE as we celebrate Leap Into Literacy. Our Reading Minutes competition got off to a great start last week. Our incredible students met our week-long goal of 125,000 minutes read at home in only four days. Mrs. Lavery decided to up the ante. If we can exceed our goal by 10%, the school and the winning classes in K-2 and 3-5 will each get to prepare a special surprise for Mrs. Lavery, Mr. Shillings, and Mr. Caggia. So, stay tuned...

All week long, students have been making posters and bookmarks to celebrate reading. Students and teachers will be sharing book talks on our Morning News program each day. Wednesday will be a school-wide pajama day to celebrate meeting our reading goal. Wednesday night will be our Leap Into Literacy Night with a PTA meeting followed by special sessions prepared by our teachers. Friday will be "Dress As Your Favorite Book Character". We'll also find out what the school and winning classes have in store for Mrs. Lavery, Mr. Shillings, and Mr. Caggia.

Leap Into Literacy Night - Wednesday, February 29

There will be events all around the school showcasing the many wonderful ways your children engage with literature and reading each day. After a brief General PTA Meeting in the Multipurpose room, families may choose any number of sessions offered by our grade levels and department teams. The Olive Chapel PTA Board will meet on Thursday, February 16 at 1:00pm in the conference room.

The Kindergarten and First Grade Parent/Student Book Club will meet on Thursday, February 16 at 6:30pm in the media center. The book, Henry and Mudge In the Green Time by Cynthia Rylant will be discussed.

Friday, February 17 is Early Release and students will be dismissed at 1:15pm to allow the staff to attend professional development.

The Fourth and Fifth Grade Parent/Student Book Club will meet on Tuesday, February 21 at 7:00pm in the media center. The book, The Other Side of the Island, by Allegra Goodman will be discussed.

The Olive Chapel Student Council will sponsor Crazy Hair Day on Friday, February 24. All students and staff are encouraged to participate in this school spirit day.

The Fourth Grade will host a McDonald's Night on Monday, February 27 from 5-8pm at the McDonald's Restaurant on Highway 64 at Lake Pine Drive in Apex.

WCPSS Transportation/Bell Schedule Survey
