To all:

I have waited to see what has happened with this board and I have waited long enough. Another showcase is cancelled in a region the Association has never been to. This is the third time the board has announced and decided to cancel a showcase. Now they are having a date with a tape at the Factor office in Toronto. Ontario consists of more than just Toronto. This board has to followup with it's promises.

I'm tired of being the person being complained to when it has nothing to do with me. We started this association with a great showcase in Oshawa and Toronto, but it has died from there.

To set the record straight for all, I resigned in May 2009 from the board for a number of reasons:

1. I was elected to director for one month and then voted out because it was felt there would be a conflict of interest and some people would not join if I was the director I was accused by members of the board of making it a "Rob MacArthur Country Music Association."(I have registered that domain btw.. who knows it may happen) In hindsight, may be I should have made the association private and controlled so it would keep moving forward, and follow the original vision. But, to really succeed, the association needed the input from industry, and some direction. As well, we should have been telling industry what we want as performers. In the same vote as me being cast out, we lost an individual that would have been a great help from and administrative point of view, and would have had the associaiton registered as a non profit association by now. Myself and a few other key people started this idea over two and a half years ago. We were the ones that talked to members, or those that wanted to be, to get their opinion on what they would like to see out of the association, which created the original vision. To my knowledge this has not been done by the current board, although it was an action item for February of this year. I can only assume that the board feels it knows what is best for the regular membership(singers, songwriters, muscians) more than the regular members do.

2. The point of the board of the association was that it was to be representative of it's membership. Which meant a majority of the board should have been made up of singers, songwriters, and musicians, with it also having representation from industry. Unfortunately not enough regular members interested and we ended with a majority of industry people. These are all great industry people that know their job very well, but it was not the original vision. In my eyes, and others that have communicated to me, nothing is getting done. If it is, membership is not being informed.

3. Any of the original vision stated over two years ago was voted down by the industry reps, and quite frankly, except for myself, the other singer/songwriter/musician members. So what was the original vision of the association, greatly changed.

4. Resources that were deemed important by our regular membership such as Internet Radio were allowed to expire. Resources like the web site and such disappeared when I left. Combine this with three showcase cancellations, and myself and others, wonder what value was coming from membership fees.

It got to hard to make myself go to the meetings, There was always delays, cancellations, and such, as well as too much posturing and chest thumping. I will admit I am the impatient type, an activist of sorts. Things have to keep moving forward at reasonable pace, with the membership being informed all the way. Since I left in May, the last newsletter was in June(that was the one that said the July Showcase in Kingston had been cancelled and moved to October.)

So, since I don't think I will be doing much in Country Music anymore, in Ontario anyways, I felt I might as well shoot my mouth off as I do sometimes. I am pretty sure getting any help or assistance for my band by existing industry rep board members would now be even more difficult. But, at least I hope I will not seen as being part of this inactivity. I am actually lobbying the provincial government on a couple aspects of the music industry in Ontario, that if things change, will be of help. Maybe a new association! If there is, it will be private to start with.

I am sending this message out through social network at www.cmao.socialgo.com, Facebook, MySpace, Digital Rodeo, My Country Space, and the newsletter. I will not be sending out through the membership database, as I forwarded that to the board and deleted my copy.

Hopefully, rather then piss people off, it will get some momentum going, or at least some communication between the board and it's members.

I am not looking for e-mails and phone calls of support to get back on the board, head the association, or whatever. In fact, I don't want to here any more about it, or be contacted about it. I am sure there are many that do not want to see me back on the board, or heading it, anyways, and that's ok. I just wanted to set the record straight.

You no doubt noticed the association’s new logo above.

CMAO background:

The original organization was formed under the name of the Ontario Country Music Association in May of 2007, by a number of interested and enthusiastic individuals who were concerned about a voice, promotion, support, growth and development of country music and the industry in Ontario. This organization would be to the benefit of song writers, musicians, bands and the overall industry including radio, management, publishers, booking agents and record companies.

To this end it was felt that there is a strong need for educational workshops and resources to strengthen each area of this growing industry.

One of the first areas to aid development was our website which went live in 2007 for communications, news feeds and other forms of information about the industry. This was shared with members as well as the general public. One of the key features of the website was the initiation of an internet radio station where members would have their music played.

The OCMA came to be recognized by way of membership drives through showcases or Open Stages as they are now known. The first showcase was in Oshawa and the second at the Gibson Guitar Center in Toronto in 2008. The next will be on October 25th, 2009 in Kingston which will incorporate seminars, a trade exhibition, the Songwriters Association of Canada’s Date with a Demo and most importantly, opportunities for both members and non members to perform!

The current board was formed in October 2008. They are Barry Haugen President, Anya Wilson Vice President, Drew Allen Secretary Treasurer, Krista Culp Education/Seminars, Peter Linseman and Terry Fernihough Membership. Bill Hart and Bob Wilson are Directors at large.

One of the first items of business was the adoption of our new name “Country Music Association of Ontario”, also referred to as the “CMAO”. The reason for the name change is due to the fact that a previous organization had operated under the old name for a number of years and we would like to eliminate any confusion as we begin anew.

A new online social network is in place for members and the general public. Members can communicate with each other and post news and events that they wish to share with the industry. There is also a section for our magazine and forums.

The organization looks forward to growing its membership and assisting in the development of the careers of our writers, performers, musicians and music industry at large. Our goal is to assist, educate and enlighten our members and the public

Kingston Open Stage Sunday October 25h 2009

Our next open stage for the Country Music Association of Ontario is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, 2009, at Zorbas in Kingston. Make plans to attend and invite anyone that may be interested in music regardless of their musical genre!

Fairs and Festivals Initiative

The CMAO has been in contact with fairs and festivals in Ontario liaising with them to gain exposure for our member artists and the association.

Congrats to CMAO member Annie Marleau who opened for Murray McLauchlan on June 28th. Annie was selected by the entertainment committee of the Oakville Waterfront Festival!

The CMAO is actively looking for sponsors who would like exposure and advertising opportunities within this community, beginning with our event in Kingston. Funds gained would allow the CMAO to provide exposure for our sponsors, our artists and the CMAO…a win/win for everyone! Social Network Site:

We will maintain the CMAO web site however focus will be on the Social network site.

The CMAO has created a Social Network website. It’s similar to the widely used MySpace and Facebook sites. This network will be for both CMAO members and the General Public. It will provide promotional information viewable to the public. This social network will also replace our member’s page on our web site. Members will now be able to add and maintain their own information for our industry and the general public!

We feel this social network is a great benefit to our members, the association and the general public as a whole!

Membership Dues

The Associations membership dues will run from January 1 to December 31 each year to make the accounting consistent from year to year. If your dues are due or you would like to join the association, dues will be pro rated for the balance of the year and you will be invoiced accordingly after your application has been accepted.

Deric Ruttan

Walt Aldridge – CANADIAN DEBUT

Billboard magazine named Aldridge one of the Top Ten Country Songwriters of the year twice on the strength of such songs as Ricky Van Shelton's "I Am A Simple Man". His song "No Getting Over Me" was named one of ASCAP's most performed country songs. "Holding Her and Loving You" was named Song of the Year by the Nashville Songwriters' Association International. The Alabama Music Hall of Fame awarded Aldridge with a star in their Walk of Fame and their Musical Creator's Award.

Tim Taylor

Born in Bowmanville, ON, Tim Taylor has enjoyed a very successful career in Canadian country music both as a performer and more recently as a hit songwriter in Nashville. His major awards include four CCMA Duo of the Year awards with Anita Perras, and three JUNO nominations as a male vocalist. His songwriting honours include two CCMA Song of the Year Awards (One Smokey Rose and Ten Million Teardrops), CCMA Independent Song Of the Year (She’s Getting Serious), and the 2008 BCCMA Song of the Year award for Done You Wrong ( Aaron Pritchett.)

Pam Belford – Canadian Debut

Pam’s a true veteran with past writing deals with MCA Music & HoriPro Entertainment and with contracts at many, many more. Her biggest claim to fame is the song, "If I Know Me", which George Strait recorded and took to 1 for 2 weeks. George Strait also recorded a song her, "Holding My Own", the title of his CD. Pam’s songs have been recorded by Rich McCready, Dean Dillon, Angela Kaset, Doug Stone & more.

Brad Johner,

A Canadian country music sensation, Brad a multiple Canadian Country Music Association winner and nominee. His sophomore solo album Summertown Road, follow up to his very successful and Juno-nominated solo debut Free, was picked as the #4 Canadian Country album of 2005 and the single She Moved was the #3 Canadian Country Hit of 2005 as selected by Canadian Country Music News. Cangig Country Singing Compeition Qualifiers Now in GTA and Durham Region

Qualifying auditions for the GTA and Durham Region are Thursdays at the Rovers Rest in Ajax, ON., starting at 9pm. Earlier auditions are available for the Junior Division. All auditions must be booked in advance through the ROBMAC Group. The ROBMAC Group is looking for more locations for auditions, as well as a location to hold the GTA/Durham Region finals. Those interested in being a qualifier location or finals location should contact The ROBMAC Group.

Auditioners that qualify will advance to a GTA/Durham Region Finals where two singers from each division will advance to the finals being held July 9th to 12th at the Napanee Fair Grounds in Napanee, ON.

Next CMAO Showcase

The next open stage for the Country Music Association of Ontario is scheduled for Sunday, July 12, 2009, at Zorbas in Kingston, Ontario.

Besides CMAO members, this year we will be allowing an amount of time for non-members to showcase. If you are a CMAO member or non member that would like to perform at the open stage, you must apply by sending an electronic promo kit to ocma@rogers.com by June 14th, 2009. (Kit must include bio, photo, 3 tracks, and a performance video if available.)

We are also investigating the possibility of a industry trade show during the Open Stage. If you, or anyone that you know would be interested in taking part in the trade show, please contact us by June 7th.

We are working on a lesson series based on the book Your First Cut written by Jerry Vandiver and Gracie Hollombe. These lessons will be featured over several meetings in the coming year. This is a detailed step-to-step guide to getting there. The lessons deals with goal setting and disciplining yourself to become a professional songwriter that get songs cut regularly.

We continue where we left off at the last meeting with Chapter 6 - Visiting a major music centre. We'll discuss deciding on your target city (Nashville, L.A., New York and Toronto), researching workshops, events and activities, potential contacts, playing writer's nights, original songs to play out, co-writing, networking, demoed songs, setting up PRO appointments, and connecting with songwriting organizations.

We'll also be doing song evaluations. Please bring a song with 10-15 copies of the lyric. Play your song or bring a CD or cassette.

Dan McVeigh is performing in this year's Tin Pan North Songwriters Festival in Toronto, Ontario.

Dan's show is on Friday, May 22, 9:30 PM at Trane Studio in Toronto (see poster for details). Dan will be performing in a round with Tim Taylor (major Canadian hits with Jason McCoy, Aaron Pritchett, Anita Perras and more and multiple CCMA award winner). Also, in the round are Graham Greer and Howard Jamieson.

There is an earlier round starting at 7:30 PM featuring Bruce MIchael Miller (Nashville hit writer), Steven Demetrious, Connie Rossiter and Beth Hamilton.

The price can't be beat for a mere $10 for the night. Tickets are available through www.ticketwindow.ca or at the door.

Convoy for a Cure

On October 3rd, 2009 there will be an all female drivers Convoy for a Cure from the Fifth Wheel Truck Stop in Cornwall, Ontario to the 730 Truck Stop in Cardinal, Ontario. Last year's convoy raised $15,000 for the cause, this year our goals are much loftier..

Female drivers will be welcome. There is a $50 entrance fee and those entering should have pledges from supporters. The top money earner of the participants will be awarded the lead position in the convoy.

Corporate sponsors that may want to have a presence at the convoy may contact Ray Gompf by email for application forms.

There are going to be two other convoys run simultaneously: One in Edmonton, Alberta and Dallas Texas.

We have made contact with the Roadhammers through Clayton Bellamy who has agreed to wear one of our troop TOAD SHIRTS in a concerT

WE WILL ALSO BE SENDING TROOP TOAD SHIRTS TO LEE ON 95.3 AND DURHAM RADIO HERE TOO

We have also started a program of write in to contatc President Obama asking him to attend the Michigan Vetfest july 11 2009 and bring along a full brass military marching band

COUNTRY MUSICIANS ROCK AND READ FOR KIDS @ WATERLOO LIBRARY

Over sixty country musicians from Canada and the United States are partnering with the Waterloo Public Library (WPL) in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada to celebrate libraries and support family literacy in the community.

The list includes such well-known recording artists as Paul Brandt, George Canyon, Kenny Chesney, Terri Clark, Sara Evans, Jewel, Miranda Lambert, Jason McCoy, Brad Paisley and Darius Rucker.

The partnership project between the musicians and WPL is called Country Musicians Rock and Read for Kids.

The musicians have shared the title of their favourite book with WPL. The titles range from fiction to non-fiction, new releases and old favourites, adult and children’s books. The library will do a public launch of the complete list on October 24 to encourage young readers to discover the joy of reading, and country fans to explore new and different books.

Each musician has also donated an autographed CD or other memento to the project. WPL will be packaging each donated item with a copy of the musicians’ favourite books and auctioning them off on October 24 to support family literacy projects at WPL.

Members of the community are encouraged to follow the progress of the project on Twitter (WaterlooLibrary) or get the latest updates on Country Musicians Rock and Read for Kids on the Facebook site.

WPL’s Sandi Hall, who developed the project and has been in contact with all of the musicians, notes that the country music industry is known for its community spirit.

“An hour after I sent out the first email, asking for a book title, I heard back from Aaron Lines,” says Hall. “The responses then just poured in, and we’re now up to sixty-three musicians participating in the project!”

The library is partnering with KIX 106.7 on Country Musicians Rock and Read for Kids project, which is being timed to coincide with Canadian Library Month and Ontario Public Library Week in October.

Our next chapter deals with setting aside a 3 hour block of time at least once a week to co-write. Topics discussed: Assesing your strengths, Co-writer search, calling a new co-writer and making an appointment, and co-writing progress.

We'll also be doing song evaluations. Please bring one of your songs with 10-15 copies of your lyric to the meeting. The song should be on CD or play it live on your own instrument.

CISN Country Hit Maker

This has been my baby for almost 4 years now, and has actually been in development for the past 2. The first concept was to do an online feature, throw one of your songs on the cisnfm.com website and hope people cared enough to go check it out. We thought of a podcast, but the legal logistics of it are staggering - even with consent, it's stupid how many strands of red tape there are. Then there was a YouTube feature tossed around - and numerous other concoctions, but none of them felt "right".

So then I put my thinking toque on.

The biggest challenge for a lot of "indy" artists in getting a spot on playlists like CISN's is the familiarity factor. We don't have a lot of spots, so it's all about making it comfortable for our listeners. Sometimes the big names get on because the audience knows and likes them. The biggest thing a PD cares about is making the audience happy, and of course, giving them a REASON to listen - something to care about. No matter how good a song might be, the audience needs a reason to CARE - like they have something to lose if they don't listen.

But what about you, the artists? How do you get spins if nobody adds? How will anyone add if you don't get spins?

After talking to a LOT of you, there is the common consent that it's almost too easy to get an add on a smaller station, but when it comes to major markets with Hit New Country formats, it's a hard nut to crack. Contrary to popular belief, CISN's playlist isn't just about where you are on the charts, but it does help us (and every other programmer in the country) take notice. Still, when it comes to the big picture, "if it's not broken, and the station's working, why fix it"?

Still doesn't feel right though. That's where this project comes in - rather than a fix, a shakeup.

If all goes according to plan, starting February 2009, the CISN Country Hitmaker (don't know if we're sticking with THAT title per say, but I like it) series begins. With full support from Corus Interactive and Programming, each week we will feature a brand new song, by one of YOU on cisnfm.com. Through on-air promos, CISN Rewards Club members will be directed to a page featuring YOUR NEW SONG. For visiting the page and RATING your song, they will receive Rewards Club points, and YOU receive free exposure and...

The highest rated song gets a guaranteed spot on the CISN Playlist for thefollowing month. Cancon Medium to start. If the song tests well and gets some legs chartwise after that, it could stay longer. Either way, the HIGHEST RATED song (NOT the "most viewed page") gets the spot. With the fact that the average survey gets THOUSANDS of views, it's the most honest way to do things.

Who Wins? EVERYBODY:

The Artist - Gets new ears listening to them and finding out more about them, including a page dedicated to them which will generate thousands of hits in DAYS, not months/years. Besides bragging rights and the spot on the list, it gives the vital exposure needed by new/independent artists.

The Listener - Besides another way to get exclusive Rewards Club points, they will know that they are THAT much more involved in the working of the radio station, and helping a brand new star emerge with every rating. This can increase a personal connection, something the more established names already have.

The Radio Station - We get to do something that to my knowledge, short of a once-in-a-while feature, has never been done before on this or any other major market station with such intensity. Plus, we get to better connect with new artists and give you a stake in the station the same as we are putting into you.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

Have a recently released song on DMDS? GET ME A COPY, OR SEND ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION TO GET ONE ASAP - It would make the most sense if it's a song you are prepared to try and service to radio, thus if you win for the month, you can tell other tracking stations about the success in the competition.

For those of you in the Edmonton Area, please e-mail me and we will set up a time for you to come in and do a quick mini-interview to tag on the beginning and end of your song for the website. Bring a recent promo photo or e-mail me one when you can.

Below is an 2008 review of Rebekka Paige.

Rebekka has had an exciting 2008! Releasing her first CD produced by CCMA Hall of Fame 2008 Inductee, Keith Glass in May 08. Rebekka also opened for acts such as Ambush, Emerson Drive, Jaydee Bixby and Deric Ruttan. After 27 hour car ride for her first CCMA experience, she was able to perform at the CCMA's All Star and Jam post award show with Keith Glass. Also performing at the Gibson Guitar Centre i Toronto; she was interviewed on CMT Top 20 with Casey Clarke in October. Country Music News Jan 09 issue, lists Top 100 CANCOUNTRY charts (attached file) with her first charting song, Girls Like Fast Cars Too as # 91 and it charted in Dec 08 as 93!! OCMA Membership Update January 2009

Your new Board of Directors would like to thank Rob MacArthur for his insight and passion and in bringing us together to fulfill and develop the goals of an Ontario Country Music Association.

A motion was passed to recognize Rob MacArthur as the Founding Director of the Association.

It was decided at the first board meeting that a board would be made up of nine members. Let me introduce your first Board of Directors. They are Barry Haugen President, Anya Wilson Vice President , Drew Allen Secretary Treasurer, Rob MacArthur, Bill Hart, Bob Wilson, Heather Ostertag, Peter Linseman and Terry Fernihough. George Graham will work with the board as acting secretary and assisting us in registering as an Association.

The following initial Committees were formed:- 1) Fundraising/Marketing which would cover promotion and publicity also, (Drew Allen and Anya Wilson), 2) Membership (Peter Linseman), 3) Education/Seminars Heather Ostertag and
4) Membership Services which will include Open Stages (Rob MacArthur).

Your board represents the cross section of the Country Music business. The board is experienced in the following areas, songwriting, musicians, artists, publishing, recording, record companies, publicity, radio and booking agents.

A discussion on registering the Association was held. It was brought to the board’s attention the name OCMA (Ontario Country Music Association) was already registered and we should investigate a different name, it was decided to look into the possibility of registering the name “Country Music Association of Ontario”.

A name change for our Showcases was made and they will now be known as “Open Stages”. Currently there are plans under discussion for an “Open Stage”show in the Kingston area possibly in April.

As with all organizations and a new one such as ours a number of initiatives are being discussed and you will be updated on a regular basis on those decisions. If you have any ideas or concerns that you would like addressed please bring it to the attention of anyone on the board. We want to hear from you as it’s your association.
