It's so nice to be reading OLM again. I have a lot to catch up with.

Anyway recently I tried to reconnect with all kinds of literature by reading a Grisham and I'd bet my entire savings that...fiction of decent quality is beyond him. Cardboard is strawberry cheesecake compared to his characters (yes, I eat novels) and his thematic development has all the complexity of koolaid (add water and stir!).

His entire talent and potential is encapsulated in "You gotta love small towns." Seriously.

Is it just me, or does Greenblatt sound like someone who doesn't actually read many historical novels, much less *theory* about them? Even the 'touch of the real' stuff has been said a lot before--here's Carlyle on Scott, for instance (the writer I kept expecting he would mention, along with, say, Lukacs): "these Historical Novels have taught all men this truth, . . . that the bygone ages of the world were actually filled by living men, not by protocols, state papers, controversies, and abstractions of men . . . " etc.

I can't wait to read "Gone Over!" Thanks to your first rate review that is as tempting as I've read. I'm convinced it will be a great read covering an aspect of our history with which we, due to current disasters, become increasingly fascinated and needful to explore.

Sorry for the mistake, Ron, we've cleared it up.

Your book, "Norman Rockwell, Behind the Camera," looks fascinating and we'd love to have a look at it.

Thanks for letting us know about the mistake!

all best,

To me, his best work was Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I think it's the only film he made that still works for me at this point in my life. It's hilarious, touching, mature, etc. I still try to watch it at least once a year. His teen films I just don't appreciate today as much as I used to (and that includes Ferris Beuller's Day Off). Of course, the juvenile in me will always love Weird Science. If that's on TV, I'm not turning it off.

I/ve been reading and appreciating Dr. Watson since 1972 and had hoped to meet him someday and had just logged in to find if he had any conferences coming up. I'm deeply saddened at his passing but feel a sense of gratitude though for his having passed our way.

I think Mr. Eshleman may be right. Conversations about whether or not a translation is "accurate" are not all that useful without context, and this is particularly the case with Vallejo, a real surgeon. Perhaps translation is not a game of absolutes? Poetic translation, in particular, seems bound by contingencies, i.e. homophonies, double and triple entendres... Maybe it would be more fruitful to ask "what" the translator decides to translate and "how" he or she goes about doing so?

I read the book. Don't waste your money on the movie, it wasn't worth it. The ending is not what the author wrote, nor does it match the heightened climax I was expecting. Save your money.

I have two quibbles with the accuracy of the TBR review:
1. The investigation was ongoing. What seem plausible theories at the time of a crime only become herrings, whether red or vermillion, in hindsight.
2. Padding? The role of Bertillon, the foremost forensic detective in France, is dispatched in two pages
