Kelly Rowland Talks Breakup Trouble on Album Track 'Gone'

Kelly Rowland is all about expressing her feelings in song lyrics—especially about a breakup. The singer opened up about "Gone," a breakup song on her upcoming album, Talk a Good Game (June 18). According to Entertainment Weekly, Rowland says the Joni Mitchell "Big Yellow Taxi" sampled track was inspired by Taylor Swift. "We were talking about several songs, because I love the fact that a song can make you feel so empowered," said Rowland.

The song featuring Wiz Khalifa has some of Rowland's favorite lyrics. "Your dinner's waiting down the street/ You can have it your way," sings Rowland. "I remember being in that exact same head space after getting over a breakup, and walking in and him thinking that I was going to make his dinner," explained Rowland. "I was like, 'Oh no, you don't get that anymore.'"

Rowland recently made headlines when she released "Dirty Laundry," which detailed the ins and outs of her abusive ex-boyfriend and her friendship with Beyoncé. Things seem to be on the rise for the sultry singer. Rowland just inked a mega deal, reportedly worth $1 million, to become the newest judge on X Factor USA.

With her fourth solo album Talk a Good Game set to be released next month, you can expect to see a whole new Kelly Rowland. She recently stopped by the office of Cosmopolitan to give details on the new album and more.

"In this album I air out some dirty laundry. It's not just about sex. I mean, sex is great and I could record a whole album about sex...but I decided to dig deeper," Rowland told Cosmopolitan.com during a ridiculously fun visit to our New York office. She says that it's up to the listener to really try and figure out what she's singing about. Well, uh, we certainly know what "Kisses Down Low" is about.

Getting to this point where she felt she could really reveal pieces of herself in her music took some time. "For so many years when I was with Destiny’s Child, there were so many people telling me what I should be, what I should wear, what I should say, and what I should do," Kelly said. "But over the years, I started peeling those things off and I think that this album was part of my peeling process as well. That's the beauty of it."

Ultimately, Rowland has finally come into her own as a solo artist. "I just feel like I've become more comfortable in my skin. I feel so empowered as a woman." She continues, "I worked with all the artists and producers I've always wanted to collaborate with on this album. Like, Pharrell Williams. I was brave enough to call and ask him to help produce a track. I was afraid he would say no, but he said he's always wanted to work with me. I don't know why I thought he wouldn't want to work with me. I think for a long time you don’t realize your power. There’s nothing wrong with realizing your power as a person, and especially, as a woman." You said it, girl.

In support of Talk A Good Game, Kelly Rowland will embark on a co-headlining tour with The-Dream, whose fifth studio album, IV Play is due next month on Def Jam Recordings.

"We bonded over the holidays, in December. We just became great friends. We are really similar in so many ways. Her and Bey' are like sisters to me," The Dream says of Kelly Rowland. "We just bonded over songs. She's on my album and I worked on two for her album, 'Skywalker,' and another I wrote for her, 'Dirty Laundry,' [which] has a lot of her insight and it's pretty intense." "It was just a regular talk: 'You gonna go? We should go do it together. We should go on tour,'" he says of making plans to tour with Rowland.
