How the smash musical comedy scored with Journey, Queen covers by Nicole Frehsee

When the creators of Fox's Glee gathered to screen the pilot of the high school choir comedy, they called in a special consultant: former Journey singer Steve Perry. "We were all biting our fingernails," says the hit show's musical director, Adam Anders, who reworks classic tunes and pop hits - including "Don't Stop Believin'" - into Broadway-style numbers. "He sat there, silent, and when the song finished, he said 'Can I meet whoever produced this? It's great.'"

Perry isn't the only fan: Hours after the Glee pilot aired on May 19th - it followed American Idol's finale - the cast's Journey cover shot to Number One on the iTunes chart; it has sold more that 500,000 digital downloads to date. The song is just one hit spawned by the show since its debut: Covers of Rihanna's "Take A Bow", Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" and Queen's "Somebody To Love" have all popped up in the iTunes Top 10, and more than 2.5 million singles from the show have been downloaded. "We didn't think the music would be this explosive," says Rob Stringer, chairman of Epic/Columbia, Glee's label. "It's hard to sell music these days, but this proves that if you're on prime-time TV, you can get into people's homes and get them excited."

In November, Glee: The Music, Volume 1 - a 17-song set that includes a choir-backed rendition of Kanye West's "Gold Digger" and a jazzy take on Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself" - debuted at Number Four on Billboard's Top 200. "We think it will be a very big gift item this year," says Amazon's Drew Herdener. Volume 2 - featuring Kelly Clarkson and Van Halen covers - is due out December 8th, and future installments are planned for next year. "People love interpretations," says Stringer, who has also signed the show's eight stars to record deals. "Plus, we use great songs that can withstand the transition."

Glee's creator, Ryan Murphy, helms the song selection. "It's a very organic process," Anders says. "We just shoot ideas back and forth." So far, only one artist has turned the show down: Bryan Adams, whose "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" Anders wanted for a love scene.

Big mistake: The original versions of Glee's covers have seen a substantial sales bump, sparking the interest of artists from Cyndi Lauper (she successfully lobbied for a "True Colors" cover) and Gavin DeGraw (he sent Anders his CDs). "Billy Joel's manager called me and said 'Billy wants his songs in Glee - you need to help him,'" says Anders, who is prepping an all-Madonna episode set for 2010. "I said, 'Cool. I'll see what I can do.'"

Overview:

Everyone except Rachel, that is, who wants her legacy cemented in print. Quinn makes it a point to be able to show her kids that she did something in highschool, by making sure she gets in the cheerios yearbook picture. Also, Will finds out that Terri was faking pregnancy. Meanwhile, the Glee club stars in a commercial for mattresses, though this has unanticipated consequences.

Glee's Jenna Ushkowitz, who plays shy singer Tina on the show, took a break from glee club practice to drop by Seventeen and chat! See what she had to say about getting hit with cameras, her character's speech impediment, and what songs she's looking forward to! The next Glee episode airs on Fox next Thursday! 17: You had more of a musical theater background before Glee. What's the transition to TV been like?
Jenna Ushkowitz: It was kind of crazy. I hadn't really done a lot of TV, except Sesame Street when I was younger. The hardest part of Glee in particular is that we are singing and dancing on a real stage with a camera right there in your face, following you around while you're dancing.

17: Are you ever afraid of the cameras?
JU: I got whacked on my hand when I was doing "Don't Stop Believing". It was this huge bruise on the bone, it was so bad. Physically I am afraid of the camera because we have to dodge it and then sometimes it'll be on somebody [else] so you have to keep dancing in case they get your hand, but at the same time, you're like making funny faces at the person who's on camera.

17: What is the shooting schedule like?
JU: It's insane. Eight days an episode. If we're not shooting, we're rehearsing. And so we'll have demo tracks to work with in the dance rehearsals and then the next day after we record that night, they'll send us a scratch copy of what we did so that we have our version. But it's a lot.

17: Are you guys suggesting songs to the producers?
JU: Always. We have a tactic... I don't know if I should share this [Editor's Note: Sorry Jenna, too juicy not to print!]. Basically we start singing around them, we sing the songs we want to sing, and it makes it feel like it's their idea. But now we've heard that we're doing a full Madonna episode. So, we have now started to brush up on our Madonna library and all of us are singing her songs. I hope she comes to the set, I want to meet her.

17: Is there a favorite that you've all been singing around?
JU: We're kind of pushing for Kurt to sing "Vogue" or "Material Girl".

17: You play Tina, a cute character with a blue hair streak who's a little shy and has a speech impediment. What is that all about?
JU: November 11th, the next episode, Tina's stutter will be explained! I don't want to give away too much, but it comes out from her shyness, her being so introverted and not wanting to talk at all. But, when they cast it, they wanted somebody with a stutter and Tourette's [Syndrome]. So when I auditioned, I had full-on Tourette's. The audition tapes are starting to come out now and I'm kind of scared. It was hard because you don't want to make fun of that, that's not a joke. So the stutter, it got better [over time] and now I find myself actually stuttering sometimes in real life.

17: Does the cast hang out when you're not filming?
JU: We're best friends. We're one happy family. We have "glee-kends," when we bowl, we have sleepovers, and three of us actually live in the same apartment complex, so it's a little like a college dorm.

17: Cool! Let's do some cast superlatives. Who's the most talented?
JU: Amber Riley is the best singer.

17: Who's the hottest?
JU: Kevin McHale.

17: Who's the funniest?
JU: Chris Colfer.

17: Who's the most likely to flub a line?
JU: I have to give it to Lea Michele. She never flubs lines, but she has probably the longest paragraphs in the whole world.

17: Who's the most serious?
JU: Can I do the opposite? Cory Monteith, he's a dufus, I love it.

17: Who has the best hair?
JU: Tina! Can I give a character the best hair? Tina!

Lea Michele Wants Adam Lambert Badly

For weeks, rumors have been circulating that "American Idol" fave Adam Lambert was in talks to appear on an upcoming episode of "Glee," a pop-culture match seemingly made in glammy, gold lamé heaven.

The whole thing appeared to be legit — especially since it was "Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy who was talking about Lambert's cameo in the first place — but somewhere along the way, negotiations must have hit a snag. Lambert shot down the rumors during an appearance last week on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, saying he hadn't "heard anything officially" from the show.

And with those words, the dreams of millions of Glamberts (and Gleeks) were shattered.

But fear not, because on Thursday, when the cast of "Glee" stopped by the MTV Newsroom to discuss their new album Glee: The Music, Volume 1, we had to ask them about the prospects of Lambert joining the ranks of Josh Groban and Kristin Chenoweth as guest stars on the show. And, as it turns out, things aren't quite as dead as you'd imagine.

In particular, actress Lea Michele — who plays the scene-stealing Rachel Berry on "Glee" — seemed determine to work with Lambert, no mater what it took to make it happen.

"I love Adam Lambert! I want to sing with him so badly," she said. "If they don't let me [sing with him] on the show, I would just in life. I just want to sing with him so badly. He's just such an incredible vocal performer, and I'm such a huge fan.

"I feel like I'd be getting to work out at the gym with the best trainer in the world," she continued. "You want to work out with someone who's ripped and is going to train you well. That's what I think about when I think of Adam Lambert. I just think he's awesome."

See, she used a personal-trainer metaphor — things must be serious indeed.
