Project Of The Week : Wimbledon! (Tennis)

The project of the week is a fun way to get out and map something that you might not map otherwise. This week we'll map tennis courts before we run home to watch the matches at Wimbledon.

Planned Maintenance

Some OpenStreetMap services will be unavailable during the following dates, due to power maintenance work at our server hosting:

2nd and 3rd July 2011. (Saturday & Sunday)
30th and 31st July 2011. (Saturday & Sunday)
3rd and 4th September 2011. (Saturday & Sunday)
and 1 weekday (to be confirmed) during August 2011.

On each of these weekends, the servers will be shut down at 7:30 UTC, and will be started again after works are completed, which will be Sunday 16:30 UTC at the latest, but may be earlier. We do not yet have a precise date for the August maintenance.

The following services will be unavailable during these periods:

XAPI / jXAPI
dev.openstreetmap.org server (errol)
rendering of new map tiles
osmfoundation.org and stateofthemap.org web sites

Project Of The Week : Libraries and book stores

Libraries are repositories of information, places of learning and of research. One of the ancient libraries, the Library of Alexandria is credited with comparing different versions of books with empirical standards which became the beginnings of the scientific method. Libraries are filled with adventures of discovery wrapped in layers of shush. Book stores are another source for book-learning, though the brick and mortar versions are dwindling in some places.

The Project of the Week is to add local libraries and book stores to the map.

RFC: Kerb

A kerb (American English curb) is the edge where a road meets a sidewalk=*. As these are transition points between different surfaces and/or elevations, the locations of kerbs are important features to pedestrians, cyclists, and especially to those with reduced mobility (e.g. in wheelchairs).

The proposed key is kerb=*, and is used on the node of a highway=footway, highway=cycleway, or highway=path at the location of the kerb (at the edge of the street).

Aerodrome Rendering + RFC

Currently small and big aerodromes are rendered the same at low zoom levels. Thus it's impossible to distinguish them and the map looks rather cluttered up (Example). During the discussion on the mailing list a mapper mentioned an old proposal which could resolve the issue.

Potlatch, the 'edit' tab flash editor, has released a new version :

Statement From NearMap

NearMap is an Australian aerial imagery and location based media company that (amongst other things) creates high resolution aerial imagery over major Australian cities. NearMap aerial imagery is available on CC-BY-SA so a lot of Australian mappers use it to trace for OSM. There were some fears that the move of OSM to ODBL would lead to mass deletion of those data. But this week NearMap finally declared that data derived from their imagery before 17th June 2011 can be regarded as compatible with the new license, but after then the licenses are incompatible.

ODBL : Phase 4 on 19th of June

As you probably know, OSM is changing its license to ODBL . Up until now, users who haven't yet agreed to the new CT were still able to edit. But now the process has reached Phase 4. We are no longer accepting changes from people that do not agree to the ODBL.

Users that haven't yet accepted the new terms or have declined can still accept them by going to their user settings.

Bing Imagery priority ?

Steve Coast, who now works for Bing/Microsoft, asked the community for which regions they would like to have better aerial imagery. He will then pass the suggestions on to the right people.

Project Of The Week : Post-secondary schools, College and University

A university or college may be included in OpenStreetMap as either a node, area, or relation but should not be included as more than one of these. Best practice in OSM is for a single thing to be represented once in the DB.

Either way, add the following tags to the university element.

amenity=university
name=University of Erehwon

Note: Often, universities and colleges are larger objects with multiple buildings, walkways, parking areas, recreation areas and other features. Consider mapping these with appropriate detail within the university boundary. These should not have the amenity=university tag. One feature, one OSM element. One university, one area drawn around the university grounds.

Disaster Preparedness Project

Do you know where to go in case of a disaster? No? A user has started a project that aims to prepare people for such emergencies. Therefore he needs to create very large maps of his community. People on the mailing list suggested many tools for this task like MapOSMatic, Safety Maps or TownGuide. Another possibility would be to use directly a rendering software like Mapnik.

RFC : Club

This proposal aims to provide a key for the great variety of existing clubs using the same tagging logic of shop=*, office=* and craft=*. Clubs are described as an association of two or more people united by a common interest or goal.

Join the Foundation?

Gert Gremmen found out that the OSM Foundation has only about 250 members, which is approximately 0.1% of all registered users. While the foundation aims to support and not to control OSM, it would nevertheless be a good way to take part in decisions like licencing, strategy or other things. But don't fool yourself, OSM is and will remain a do-ocracy

Limits of OSM

Frederik Ramm asked on the list what people think about airspace mapping. While a consensus seems to be "Please map it... but elsewhere :)" there is no possibility in OSM to "block" users that still want to add such things. The question about the limits of OSM came back up again during the discussion.

Another problem with imports

Mass imports of unreviewed data generate a lot of problems. This time again, the import of landuses in Baltimore has generated some problems to the local community. A user describes how he feels about this import on a diary page. More and more people are against blind imports and for a better import policy.

The White House uses OSM

Some mappers may have seen already that the website of the White House uses OSM for some of their maps like [4] or [5].

More and more big sites offer an OSM-based map rendering as an alternative layer or even as the only layer. This is a sign that more people find the project interesting.

Anonymous edits?

Another old debate came up this week on the lists: Some people want the return of anonymous edits. One of the use cases could be a tweet with a particular hashtag and geolocalisation to create a new object on OSM. But anonymous edits come with several problems and are hotly debated.

Sending of mail about ODBL

The possible transition to the ODBL is going forward. OSMF started to send out emails to contributors who haven't yet accepted or declined the new license. For technical reasons, emails are sent gradually instead of all at once.

As for a while now, you can follow the number of accepting or rejecting users on [6] , [7] or [8]

RFC : Towers for lighting

A user proposes a new tag for describing man-made towers designed for the purpose of lighting. While the definition is close of the actual highway=street_lamp, your comments are welcome on the talk page

RFC : Motorway junction extension

This proposal tries to help in tagging of highway exits that have ramps that split after they leave the mainline of the highway. It adds a set of tags like exit_to=* or ref:left=*.

Routing on the main page ?

The idea of integrating a routing engine into the main page of OSM is old but nowadays there are more options available and development around open source routing engines is vivid. The Open Source Routing Machine, for example, has a new online routing demo with draggable start- and destination points. Another demo using YOURS and a third one using OSRM.

Project Of The Week : Gyms and Dojos

A sports centre caters to several or many individual sports by providing the infrastructure for participants in those sports. A racquet sports centre might include playing courts for tennis, squash and racquetball among others. A general sports centre might include a multi-purpose gymnasium, outdoor fields for soccer, rugby, football and baseball and indoor and outdoor courts for volleyball. A sports centre might include a gym for strength and flexibility exercises but is distinguished from amenity=gym by the presence or dominance of multiple sport infrastructure.

Voting Process validity

A new proposal was made some time ago. The author had created a wiki page and set his proposal to proposed state quickly after the voting phase. After the voting phase, the conclusions were that people support his proposal... But ... the author didn't send a mail to the tagging list as described in the "guide lines". So another user felt that the process was not followed correctly and reverted the proposal to a RFC state.

People on the list tend to think that the voting phase should not be reverted but maybe extended after sending the right email. People called to mind that the "voting process" is only one way to share documentation about a tagging scheme and to look to other mappers for advice.

Multiple Website tags

There are multiple suggested tags for an element's URL/website: url=*, website=*, contact:website=*. These inconsistencies are mainly due to different creation dates and different ways of organizing information. In OpenStreetMap everyone can use the tag they prefer to use.

RFC: Highways as an Area

Did you ever want to represent the width/area occupied by a highway? One possibility is to add width=* to your object but some people feel that this is too limited, and they want to delineate the exact boundary of the highway area. This new proposal is about mapping highways as areas without changing the mapping approach of the basic road grid of OSM

Leaflet - A new JS library for Maps

You probably already know OpenLayers, the famous JS library used to display the main OSM map and nearly every OSM based map (and others too). Alternatives to OpenLayers are listed on Deploying your own Slippy Map. Cloudmade has now created another one called "Leaflet"

RFC : Tunnel ADR Category

ADR is a set of rules governing transport of hazardous materials by road, produced by UNECE. It is responsible for those yellow/orange diamond-shaped signs on trucks with a UN substance number and particular hazard warnings. This proposal is about adding tag tunnel:adr_category=* to manage the ADR category.

Project Of The Week : Gyms and Dojos

Gyms and dojos are similar in structure and purpose. Both tend to include an open activity area for classes and exercise stations with exercise equipment and free weights for strength and flexibility training. While the activities and locations are very similar, a dojo may distinguish itself with a focus on a particular martial art, or group of martial arts. The Project of the Week is to add local gyms and dojos to the map.

Voting service:bicycle

This proposal introduces a new namespace, "service:bicycle", in order to map detailed features of a bicycle shop (shop=bicycle). For instance service:bicycle:repair=yes would mean that the shop can repair bikes, while service:bicycle:retail=no means that it doesn't sell bikes (it could be a repair-only shop). These tags could be applied to other POIs as well: a hotel which rents bikes could be tagged with service:bicycle:rental=yes.

Historic Events voting

There are some highly controversial tags in OpenStreetMap. The historic=* tag is one of them. This tag adds the possibility to mark major events that occur in a place but don't necessarily leave a trace there (e.g. a birth, a death or a major robbery). After an edit war on the wiki page, User:Pieren asked the tagging list to vote whether the tag should or should not be included on the "Map Features" main page.

RFC: Access for Cars

In the access=* scheme of tags, there is the possibility to allow/disallow access for "motorcar". But the wiki describes this tag as for "motor vehicles with more than 2 wheels/more than 1 track" and thus includes trucks and autocars.

This new tag applies ONLY to cars.

Describing the Level of detail

You know it, OSM is so powerful, it's really hard to get all details in one survey... there are too many things you can put into OSM. Starting from this observation, some users have created a page describing their point of view about the different "levels of detail" of information you can add.

Breaking

From time to time the idea about forking OSM or breaking it up into several smaller parts like wikipedia pops up. This time it's a proposal for breaking. Obviously this idea is not welcomed by everyone and would lead to a lot of technical problems.

RFC: New access restriction

The access restriction scheme has been largely extended since its creation. This proposal wants to sum up and rewrite the access restriction tags with a more clear scheme.

RFC: advertising

This proposal wants to add a tagging scheme for advertisings. Billboards, columns, wallpaintings are those kind of advertisings you can see and take as a landmark.

RFC: childcare

This new proposal is about tagging places for children to do homework, play and spend time otherwise after school or kindergarten. It uses the tag amenity=childcare in combination with others.

New Tile Server for OSM!

The tile server (responsible for rendering your changes on the main website) has been changed. Newer version of Mapnik, SSD disk, more RAM, Postgresql 9.0 and the rendering is now as fast as the light :) Since the change, the lag of rendering rarely exceeds 1 minute (instead of ~20 before).

Project Of The Week : Sport fields

The project of the week is a fun way to get out and map something that you might not map otherwise. We're going to add more sports facilities to the map.

You might find a sport field near a local school or in a municipal park. There may even be several in close proximity. Trace the outline of the pitch with your gps and add the sporty detail to the map.

RFC : Extended addr keys

With micromapping the need of more detailed keys for describing addresses has risen. This new proposal suggests some sub keys like addr:floor or addr:door.

RFC : Shelter Type

Back in 2006, a proposal was made to add amenity=shelter as a tag. But it wasn't documented very well and so mappers used it for example for alpine huts as well as for bus stop shelters in a city. The main mapnik renderer treats shelters as alpine huts and so renders tons of "huts" in cities.

This proposal adds shelter_type=* to distinct them.

Accepted Sidewalk as a separate way

Do you remember the multiple proposals for mapping sidewalks?. The one that proposed to add sidewalks as separated ways has just been "accepted".

You can now find details on its description page ( footway=sidewalk ).

OpenStreetMap has a new logo!

If you haven't seen it yet, OSM has rolled out a new logo :

While it's a modern version of the old logo, there are still some adaptations to do (eg: Black & White, small scale, ...).

Obviously, the implementation caused heated discussions on the talk list.

Japan Crisis followup

After the big crisis in Japan, mappers and the HOT team have become very active in the region. As for Haiti, everyday export and calculations are done on OSM data : GPS maps, verification tools, dump of data, ...

The effort is still in action so if you want to help check the 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami page and hot.openstreetmap.org

Sidewalks or Footway

Currently there is no consensus on how to map sidewalks of a street. There are currently two possibilities : the sidewalk=* or the much more used Proposed features/Footway.

While people seem to agree on the usage of Footway, some prefer the term "sidewalk" to "footway" so another proposal has appeared to tag with highway=footway + footway=sidewalk.

RFC : Individual Parking

Over the last months more and more high resolution satellite images were made available to mappers. A lot of them are good enough to identify single parking spaces, especially with special symbols on them, like disabled parking, which again would allow much more detailed mapping of such areas. The current mapping scheme with just the tag amenity=parking isn't sufficient to represent this high density of information. Therefore I wrote this proposal as an addition, not as a replacement, to the current mapping scheme for parking spaces.

This proposal adds a bunch of tags to complete the old parking scheme.

OSM is becoming increasingly used and obviously, the number of licence violations increases. The Lacking proper attribution page refers to those sites but some users have asked if there is a reliable process to handle this kind of problem.
