Q: WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO LAUNCH YOUR OWN TRAVEL BRAND?

"It's no surprise that the last few years have brought out a lot of change, and eye opening circumstances that have sparked a lot of questions and reroutes. (Pun intended ;) ) The pandemic hit the travel industry hard and many people (including myself) took time to try new things, rethink their careers, and change or add to their path accordingly.

My Instagram @yogameetstravel has gradually grown over the course of my flying career, and I wanted to expand upon that community beyond the Instagram app itself. 

The Yogameetstravel brand wasn't the overnight idea but the smaller steps and creative conversations on the way to building my website is what got my head going in the right direction. 

Once I had a website and logo that encompassed who I am and what I wanted the brand to look like, it naturally felt right to get it on clothing.

I wear and promote enough athleisure from other brands as an influencer on a regular basis, so why not get creative with my own? :)" – Jessica Rooney, Founder of Yogameetstravel

Q: WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGNS AND COLLECTION?

"My Yogameetstrael logo with what I like to call the "Cartoon Jess" (the girl that mimics me doing a handstand on a suitcase) was the start. Cartoon Jess is a fun design in itself that grabs your attention, ties my two passions together, and the words Yoga meets Travel in the logo.

I have expanded upon my logo to add mindful sayings and words that either make you smile, or relate to travel. 

For example, "Text me when you land." It's a text that carries a lot of weight and never gets old to receive.

Whether it comes from your mom, a friend, or a significant other, it is quite literally a love language. In other words, let me know when you made it safe. I care about you. I love you. Who doesn't like hearing that? So naturally, I thought it would be a cute crewneck to wear when traveling for fun and when I'm not in uniform. 

Another one I love from the collection is "Catch Flights, & Feelings.". I feel like in the aviation industry and in general, people act like it has to be one or the other. You can only be in love, or you can only travel. Ideally, I think having someone you care for or love and someone that also enjoys traveling is the real goal. Who says you have to pick just one?

"Be A Nice Human" speaks for itself. It is pleasant to read and makes just about anyone smile. It is a simple and powerful message that we can't ever get enough of."

Q: HOW DO YOU FEEL OTBT ALIGNS WITH YOUR BRAND AND YOUR LIFESTYLE?

"OTBT Shoes and Yogameetstravel Merch are both promoting lifestyles for the traveler. They are both casual, comfortable, and inspiring. The products together and individually prompt a second look and oftentimes spark up a conversation. As a fellow traveler, there are never enough conversations to be had when you are on the go and in a new place, city, state, or country."

We've been in touch with Sarah Dorough for several months, sponsoring sneakers for her (very) active lifestyle as a Fitness Trainer and Level 10 Gymnast.

Our story

"Luke and I met on Instagram and had an instant connection. We started FaceTiming everyday and...

after months of chatting online, we knew we had to meet in person! Our only issue… we happen to live on the opposite side of the world from each other, but that didn’t stop us.

We decided to send it and see what it would lead to. Meeting in person was one of the best moments of my life, and one of the hardest when he had to leave. During that trip we started officially dating and the long distance began… after a few months, I got to make the trip out to him and we had the best adventures! We are in this for the long run and are doing everything we can to make this relationship work!" – Sarah

As a travelers ourselves at OTBT, we're reminded of so many forms of love that travel inspires, from falling in love with a breathtaking view to the people you meet along the way. But sometimes, it takes more that a dream. 

"As much as we want to see each other and start a life together, travel is just crazy expensive to fly across the World (Especially at our age)." – Sarah

Insider Bella Rivas shares her favorite hot spots, destinations Off the Beaten Track, and tips for travelers planning to visit her beautiful country. Sporting her favorite footwear for the journey, OTBT shoes of course.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HOTSPOTS IN GREECE?
Towns I would definitely recommend visiting would be: of course Athens, Rhodes, Rethymno, Spetzes and Paros. These places engulf a mix of touristic and raw / natural land and culture that is definitely worth seeing.

FUN DESTINATIONS IN GREECE OFF THE BEATEN TRACK?

For sure my little village in Greece is an Off the Beaten Track. The photos were taken not far from this village in Embona.

This is the village of great traditional taverns and lots of wine. Another wonderful place to visit is “I limni tou kourna” just outside of Rethymno, Crete. The best restaurants and food you will ever taste along with a beautiful mountain view and lake in front of you.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MODE OF TRAVEL IN GREECE?
My favorite mode of travel would definitely be boat. Although the ride can get quite rocky, the Aegean Sea is stunning and you can’t get enough of the view.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT GREECE NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW

The life here is very relaxed. It is normal to sit at a cafe with one coffee for 4 hours and just people watch or look at the view. Life is not fast paced as it is in the Western world.

There is always board games called “tavli” at cafés, played by all ages, young and old. When Greek people go out for drinks you will hardly see them ordering a glass or a cocktail. They either go all out with a bottle or two or they stay home, there is no mid-field playing here.

WHAT ARE A FEW THINGS YOU REALLY LOVE ABOUT GREECE?

I love their traditional mentality and how family oriented people are here.

The food quality and freshness in Greece is also something that is quite different and admirable and the produce is locally grown avoiding the harsh chemicals and pesticides that are common in other countries.

WHAT ARE 5 ESSENTIALS TRAVELERS SHOULD PACK WHEN VISITING GREECE?

Definitely pack: Sunglasses, sunscreen, multiple bathing suits, very light clothing (for summer as it gets very hot) and comfortable shoes.

The roads are not ideal for high heels and stilettos as they are uneven and many are paved with pebble stone.

WHAT INSPIRED OU TO TREK YOSEMITE THIS YEAR WITH YOUR FAMILY?
"Last year during the pandemic, we decided to visit Yosemite in February and fell in love with this beautiful valley. We missed the fire fall by El Capitan during that visit, so this year, we were eager to visit Yosemite and capture this phenomenon experience."

WAS PLANNING THE TRIP EASY? WHAT DID YOU DO TO MAKE THIS INCREDIBLE ADVENTURE HAPPEN?
"On our first trip to Yosemite, we stayed in Groveland at an Airbnb, but we didn't get to explore the park as much because we still had to drive back an hour each way. We stayed in the park at the Yosemite Valley Lodge on this trip, which I booked months in advance to guarantee a spot in February.

I recommended booking any trip in advance since lodging books quickly."

WHAT WAS THE MOST SURPRISING EXPERIENCE YOU HAD ON THE JOURNEY?

"Witnessing the magnificent Firefall with my son is a moment I will never forget.

We hiked a four miles round trip to get a spot to view the Firefall and made it ten minutes before the sunset. When the setting sun makes Horsetail Fall near El Capitan appear to be on fire or even look like a river of gold falling down the valley's cliffs 1,570 feet below."

HAVE OU EXPERIENCED OTHER AREAS IN THE NATIONAL PARKS? WHICH WAS YOUR FAVORITE?

"...since Covid, our primary goal has been to explore as many national parks as our little adventurous hearts can.

We have explored Lassen, Joshua Tree, Muir Woods, Yosemite, Petrified Forest in AZ, and our recent Pinnacles National Park. Our favorite National Parks in California that we frequently visit are Yosemite and Joshua Tree."

WHAT ARE SOME ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR READERS PLANNING TO VISIT THE STATE PARKS?

"Research! Take the time to learn about the places you are going to, the culture and history, the hikes, the climate, and the best local things to do.

Plan your visit based on the season and check the weather before going, especially in the summer because it can get very hot. Many State and National Parks offer campsites anywhere in the park, but book in advance."

MUST-SEE SIGHTS WORTH THE TREK?
"A must-see sight worth the trek is Monument Valley, located on the border of Arizona and Utah. The valley is host to towering sandstone rock formations that have been sculpted over time. This worthy destination is a Navajo Tribal Park which requires a permit to enter and explore the backcountry."

"I started my fitness journey at a young age. I was a competitive level 10 gymnast so I’ve always been active. Once retiring from the sport due to a back injury, I wanted to continue on with my fitness lifestyle.

Q: WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN 2021, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
"My biggest challenge of 2021 was transition. I graduated high school in 2020."

"It hasn’t been easy, but sharing my love for health and fitness with others is something worth working for! I want to inspire others to find their own healthy life."

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS FOR 2022? OR ANTI-RESOLUTIONS?
"I have so many goals for 2022, I want to continue to grow my online fitness training business as well as my app, finish off the gymnastics competition season strong with my little gymnasts, work on some video shoots or model for more companies, travel more, and obviously try more OTBT shoes!"

"Want to stay active in 2022? Don’t give up on yourself!"

"Go. Do it. Make it happen."

Q: Flight attendant, yogi master and so much more, tell us a little about your lifestyle of travel and adventure.

"Oh man, I would say the best single word to describe it is a whirlwind. But that is where the gift and practice of yoga comes into play. The mindfulness of the practice reminds me to find and create balance as much as possible, especially when I am on the go. Otherwise, you will burn yourself out or won't have the energy you need to stay moving and happy. Yoga was introduced to my life and became routine first. Travel was always an underlying passion. The career of becoming a flight attendant allowed the two passions to mix together quite perfectly." – Jessica Rooney, @yogameetstravel

Q: How many places did you travel to in 2021? What was your favorite destination and activities on your trips?

"Wow. Good question. I do not keep track anymore! Between flying places for work, sometimes you are just passing through airports/cities, and sometimes it's a short overnight trip so it's hard to say what counts as travel to me now. It is almost constant to some extent. I am based on the west coast and I am from the east coast, so I cover a lot of ground just getting to and from work. Then you add work trips, and then you add where I choose to go on days off, it's a lot!

Highlights of 2021, always Hawaii. I did a big 2 week personal trip there in April of 2021 and island life is always so freeing, healing, and magical.

There is nothing like it, and I am all for spending as much time in the ocean, hiking, and anything in the sun.

As far as work trips go, I go to Hawaii when I can (usually Maui) and I did have a 27 hour Puerto Vallarta layover in December. Puerto Vallarta was not only a new destination for me, but beautiful and nice to get out of the country for a bit!"

Q: Travel got a little crazy the past couple of years. What adaptations have you made to feel safe and comfortable while continuing your journey?

"Travel did get a lot crazy the past few years. If anything I have just upped my self care routine. Staying active, feeding and fueling your body with nutrients, and all the water you can get. I have also found myself spending more time alone. When you are in a metal tube with over 100 people for hours of your day,...

...you have to make "you time" a priority. Lots of yoga for me. Meditation. Journaling. And sleep. I also have hand sanitizer in about every work and personal bag I own, can't have enough of that these days!"

Q: What were some of your biggest challenges in 2021, and how did you overcome them?

"Hmmm without getting too detailed, I'd say 2021 taught me who I can truly rely on and trust. I figured that out the hard way and it was a struggle and emotional but I am better for it. With a lot of eyes on you in the social media world, comes a lot of support, connections, and opportunity. However, haters, naysayers, and jealousy are alive and well too.

You have to dig deep. You have to be true to yourself, what you represent, and believe in. Know that you can only control you, and for me that was where my faith, family, and close friends shined the brightest and it helped me move forward."

Q: Do you have any new year’s travel resolutions? Or a bucket list of places you hope to visit?

"There is a never ending list of beautiful places to go, and places I would love to revisit too!

I'd say as far as the states go, I want to spend more time on Kauai. I have heard nothing but amazing things and I have only ever been there for a 24 hour layover. I have also heard great things about Costa Rica, and Tulum...I see those on the 2022 vision board. Thailand is high on the list, Bali I need to return to, as well as Greece and Italy. As far as resolutions go, I keep it simple now. To be a better person mentally, physically, and spiritually every single day. Continuing to take constant steps to make that my reality."

Q: What are some tips for our readers for traveling in 2022?

"Go. Do it. Make it happen. Wherever you have been thinking and dreaming about, it is for a reason. Don't overthink it, don't over-plan it, there is beauty to be found in flexibility. Do not let fear of anything or anyone hold you back."

Q: You’re often spotted in OTBT during your travels, what makes us a top pick for you on the go?

"I can't tell you how many random compliments I have gotten from people when I am rocking my OTBT kicks. They are fashionable, cute, unique, SO EASY TO PACK, and lightweight.

Using natural resources helps reduce waste and makes our sneakers what they are. Rice husks are an abundant, sustainable resource that’s often wasted. We transform these husks into rice husks ash silica, which is then incorporated into our rubber soles.
