It's free to all who stop by or happen by on their way while working can hear them play every Friday so I thought. Then one day I read in the local newspaper the Honolulu Star Advertiser's insert called TGIF that the Royal Hawaiian Band is playing on Friday in Waikiki. Ahhhhh, it's not playing at the Iolani Palacea as usual and as I've written in my blogs! OH NO!!! Well, let's make the correction right now! The Royal Hawaiian Band began in 1836 when the Hawaiian royalty King Kamehameha the III and today is part of the City and County agency of Honolulu. I was about to make breakfast and on the news my mother was watching came the alert that there is a bomb threat going on in Honolulu by Punchbowl and Halekuwila. What!
http://www.khon2.com/2013/04/25/investigation-underway-after-suspicious-package-found-at-circuit-court/.

This is the kind of time when you'd like to have a radio handy wherever you go on the island. I do have a radio and I keep it handy just in case. Television news had the latest when it happens and did I wake up suddenly when I heard the news today about the bomb scare. The news said that the officials got a bomb threat at 6AM that a bomb was set to go off at noon today at the Circuit Court building today. The news showed that the streets were being cleared and pedestrian ordered to clear the area by Halekuwila and Punchbowl. Busses go down Punchbowl St. towards Nimitz Hwy. too. Being a bus rider and on a bus that suddenly had to be rerouted when a sudden water main break happened one day I understand the route changes when emergencies crop up like today's bomb threat. By around 11 the all-clear was given and as entered the library above the incident area on Punchbowl St. and King St. everything was back to normal at 1PM.
by:

<georss:box>21.0702859 -158.18105680000002 21.5436029 -157.53560980000003</georss:box>

Federal Cuts Affect Tourism and More

Just on the news tourists visiting Pearl Harbor came across less hours of operation. The air is frosty (just the way I love it!) the newspaper is here and my morning coffee is hot. What wonderful news Oahu has a centenarian. Irene Lai living on Oahu is a centenarian. She resides in Manoa. Irene Lai is a retired nurse and enjoying life in Manoa. Nancy Arcayna of the Honolulu Star Advertiser reports about Irene. Irene lives an active life and is very close to her family. Irene has an appetite bigger than her grandson David her daughter Sylvia Sugimoto says. Irene has an active lifestyle with visits to a senior center at least once a week for classes, plays mahjong, holds Scrabble matches at her home in Manoa too. Irene exercises a lot and would like to be mobile all her life. She regularly goes to church at Central Union Church. When asked her secret for her long life she replied “just be yourself. Faith plays a role.” When Irene was asked about challenges in life “when facing challenges you just take it as it comes, work hard, play hard.” Irene was widowed at age 59. She met her old beau Lawrence Lai whom she hadn’t seen for 50 years. They again hit it off and Irene married again 72. After 5 years of marriage with Lawrence Irene was again a widow. Irene has been living independently ever since. Irene admits she doesn’t watch her diet and has her won ton and other of her favorites foods when she’d like to. Irene has 2 grandchildren and raised 3 children. One of her proudest moment was watching her grandson David get his nursing degree. Irene’s story here:
http://www.staradvertiser.com/s?action=login&f=y&id=195200551&id=195200551.

Being able to be a centenarian is a wonderful design of life. To enjoy it being active and mobile is very important to Irene and many others. Just because you’re 100 years old or older doesn’t mean we live in a rocking chair! I’m 58 and not slowing down! “Extraordinary Centenarians: by Gwen Weiss-Numeroff :http://connywithay.wordpress.com/2013/02/04/extraordinary-centenarians-in-america/, explains in her book about Americans who have indeed reached 100 years of age and still living it up and never slowing down. Actual true life testimonies about people who are working, getting PHDs and more in her book shows that life just gets started it seems at 100!

What other factors for living to a centenarian are diet. A 2009 article attributes some nationality has many centenarians due to diet: http://noranagatani.com/?p=687 says Dr. Wilcox is the leading researcher for the study: “In Hawaii one of the primary researchers in geriatrics is Dr. Bradley Willcox of the Pacific Health Research Institute (PHRI. There is a rise in centenarians in the world states this article "The Rise of the Centenarians: Surprising Findings About Oldest Americans". by Sarah Stevenson on January 10, 2013 " : http://www.aplaceformom.com/blog/01-11-2013-centenarians-in-the-us/.

Why are people living to an older age? It's a Hawaiian celebration or festival. Kamehameha Schools is a private charitable trust for Hawaiian people to be educated from Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Princess Bernice Pauahi was born December 19,1831 and her parents are Laura Kanaholo Konia and Abner Ka’ehu Paki. Princess Bernice Pauahi is the great granddaughter of King Kamehameha I. The Princess married Charles Reed Bishop. It was her will that endowed for the Hawaiian people 375,000 acres of land to be constructed for educational purposes for her beloved Hawaiian people and founded the Kamehamea Schools. You can read a testimony from a student here about Princess Bernice Pauahi Biship:http://www.myhero.com/go/hero.asp?hero=Bernice_Pauahi_Bishop_Kamehameha. On Feb. 23, 2013 there will be on the campus of Kamehameha Schools their 83RD Annual Hoolaulea. http://calendar.honolulufamily.com/events/kamehameha-schools-83rd-annual-hoolaulea. Many activities blending Hawaiian history to current Hawaii at the hoolaulea on Kamehameha Schools campus. 8:30AM-4:00PM. Free and open to the public. Hawaii has a rich history of the Polynesian people who settled here in Hawaii follow Arcturus or in Hawaiian Hokulea. Hawaiiana is practiced today to honor the memory of Hawaii's past by the people living in Hawaii today. This is the only time that Kamehameha School campus is open to the public that I know of and I grew up in Hawaii. There will be shuttle services for parking is limited from Honolulu Community College and Damien High School. This year's theme of the hoolaulea is Pūpūkahi i Holomua-Unite To Move Forward: http://www.parents.ksbe.edu/Parents/Hoolaulea/Hoolaulea.php. He was jailed just for helping couples get married! Love needs all the help it can get and we can enjoy Valentine's Day with many gifts not only material, but of spiritual. Whether it's prayers, flowers on a departed loved one's grave, a heart shaped pillow making it comfortable for your family, a "nice job!", I miss you is still important in everyday life as well as on Valentine's Day. We all love th material gifts, but the spiritual ones are just as great! A kind word r gesture goes a long ways in life. Sometimes we forget the little things in life that make the day wonderful the whole year through. Have you called your mother or father that longs to hear from you? Did you e-mail your brother or sister that you haven't seen in a month. Did you call your friend to ask how they are? Many things are priceless when it comes from the heart. It's always remembered with a little smile of how nice the person is. When was the last time you've said I love you to your family or pet? It matters for you are important to them all! Happy Valentine's Day! Have a heart. One such place is Paul Poppers. http://www.tasteofaloha.com/restaurants/pauls+poppers I see it six days a week riding the bus and it seems inviting yet unknown. I was raised in a little family run shop way out in Pearl City. It’s no longer there now newly renovated to be shops for today’s crowds. We were living in Pearl City with a little family run store called Take’s Market. It was there serving Pearl City for over thirty years with meats, vegetables and snacks. Then the shopping crowd was introduced to supermarkets and little stores went out of fashion. Unless you owned your land you had big overhead and it sometimes crushed you. Little space for warehouse and no specials to draw the crowd everyone began to bargain shop. We faded into history and only a generation like mine or my grandfather’s time remember Take’s Market. After thirty years of business we are now only part of history for some people living on Oahu. So I have in my heart a soft spot for small business and all her people. Right now we're having our annual Chinese New Years celebrations everywhere Statewide! We'ver having lots of ethnic things from Vietnamese to Chinese cultural parades and foods don't forget the foods! Fun, parades, food and lots of things to do with Super Bowl too this weekend-troops returned home from Afghanistan-what a great weekend it truly is. We've got a very big smorgasbord to choose from! Or maybe you'll be like me and stay home and enjoy everything from a far?
