Joliet Disc Golf The Early Years: 1976-1980

Paul McCallister (#1124) via the J-Town Disc Golf website takes us through the origins of disc golf in Joliet and how West Park became the first disc golf course in Illinois.

Joliet Frisbee Guild was the name used to add legitimacy to Paul McCallister’s effort to establish Disc Golf in Joliet, Illinois. The name was used to describe a group of people in information sent to the Joliet Park Board and in subsequent verbal presentations about Disc Golf to the Park Board. It was also used one time on hot-stamped discs and one time on tee-shirts.

Paul McCallister learned to throw a disc by playing catch with Randy Osborne and Larry Cashen. Randy and Larry were N.I.U students living in an old house on a cobblestone street in DeKalb in 1972. Randy went on to perform Frisbee demos with John Connelly and The Aces. Larry was never heard from again after the summer of 1980.

Paul continued to throw Masters and 165 Frisbees at JuCo and on the Quad during his years at U. of I. in Champaign-Urbana. It was all about long and accurate throws to the other guy who didn’t have to move much to make the catch. During the summer of 1976, McCallister and his friend Gary Stubler were playing catch with a 165 in the valley at West Park. Bored with catch, they ventured uphill to the south side of the park one evening and picked out a tree as a target about 150 feet away. After throwing and walking back five or six times, they both had finally hit the tree. They continued through the park picking out the next target as they went along. A few weeks later McCallister brought a roll of masking tape and marked a few trees before Gary arrived. It became a three-target course with three throwing positions for each. The first course at West Park! It is now known that object golf cropped up independently in many places before Ed Headrick introduced the Pole Hole in 1976 at the Rose Bowl.

McCallister’s friend from JuCo, Paul Riley went to N.I.U. Both graduated in 1977 and would meet a few evenings each week at Pilcher Park where the entrance off Gouger Road meets Hickory Creek. They threw disc there into spring 1978 when George Meyer stopped and introduced himself one day. He was a freestyle guy but enjoyed throwing, too. George joined us on Thursdays at Pilcher. He had freestyle discs for sale. George was aware of organized Frisbee stuff. Paul Riley got a sports writing job in Hoopeston, IL and left town. McCallister’s friend Gary Stubler replaced Riley playing catch in Pilcher Park. There were times when no one else showed up to throw and McCallister started throwing at objects like trash barrels or trees. Soon he brought back the masking tape idea and marked a target on trees so his walk in the park became a game. This time two rings of tape circled each of three trees, one ring about 2 feet off the ground and the other ring two feet above the lower ring. Now the game was to hit the tree between the rings. Larry Cashen, Gary Stubler and Paul McCallister picked out spots to throw from and played threw at each target from three different spots. By now it was a competition and we were keeping track of the number of throws. It was good fun.

In late spring of 1978, George Meyer brought us the news of a tournament in Chicago. The event was the North American Flying Disc Series (N.A.F.D.S.) Chicago to be held at Gilson Park in Wilmette. Disc golf was one of the events. Intrigued, we sent in our pre-registrations and went to play. The Disc Golf tee and basket concept was new to us. One of the other events was Guts Frisbee. We were not about to try that! But we got hooked on Golf, especially McCallister. He asked Tournament Director, John Connelly, if there was any printed material on Disc Golf. Connelly sent a DGA brochure where he learned about Ed Headrick and Miracle Playground Equipment in Grinnell, IA, distributor of the course equipment.

McCallister was hooked on the Disc Golf concept and talked about trying to see about what it would take to get a course in Joliet. The small group, McCallister, Meyer, Cashen and Stubler decided to formalize themselves into a club to add a bit of legitimacy to any effort to approach the Park District. There was already a “guild” in Joliet, the Joliet Drama Guild. So we decided on the Joliet Frisbee Guild. Not so much because we thought it was a cool name, more because we thought older people like park board members and news people would more easily accept that there was a group of flying disc sports enthusiasts. We didn’t have regular meetings or any official membership registration. But when we first approached the Joliet Park District to get on a meeting agenda to introduce the Disc Golf Concept, we were doing so as a group. We got on the agenda. Meyer and McCallister appeared at the meeting. McCallister spoke, passed out copies of the DGA brochure and spoke about a low-cost recreational concept usable by people of all ages. AL Lorenc, one of the park board members, mentioned that he was familiar with the sport having seen a pole hole at a park equipment trade show.

Mr. Lorenc asked McCallister to look at some of the Joliet parks and come back with a suggestion for a site he thought would be good for a course.

Meyer and McCallister went to Highland Park, Noel Park, Pilcher Park and West Park. McCallister took a lot of time making masking tape courses at each. He thought West Park was the best site since it was centrally located and the south side of the park had no facilities except a rest room with running water and swing set. No matter what time of day he went to the park, very few people were ever there. Our next spot on a Park Board Agenda was three weeks away. Meyer obtained an 18” x 24” print of an old aerial view of West Park. The picture was at a time of year with no leaves on the trees. Using tissue overlays, McCallister drew three possible course designs.

While spending several days at the park, McCallister noticed a litter problem and no trash receptacles. He also noticed that, after dark, there were always several cars parked in the valley lot. Kids were partying and drinking. The next morning he could see how skilled the drinking bunch had become at breaking beer bottles on the curbs and pavement. He never saw a police squad car approach the lower lot.

Armed with an aerial photo and course overlays showing 18-hole feasibility, equipment cost, volunteer labor, non-interference with park use patterns, and a story about how the presence of recreational disc players would likely be a deterrent to littering and tend to keep bad elements away, McCallister gave his presentation and also mentioned that professional design and tournament certification were part of the purchase price. At the next regular meeting in February, 1979, the board voted to purchase equipment for an 18-Hold Disc Golf Course to be installed at West Park in the area used by McCallister’s designs with the exception that all fairways, tees and pole holes had to be located to the south side of the creek running through the park. This was because there was a possible plan to use the low area in the future as a storm water retention area. We agreed to prepare a re-design using the park area approved by the Board. The equipment was purchased in April and delivered in May. Ed Headrick contacted McCallister when the order was being processed to arrange being picked up at O’Hare and taken to the park. Ed tweaked McCallister’s design primarily by using the rocky dry rainwater runoff that became original fairway # 6. Ed sent the tournament certification letter to the Board. The Park District’s Director of Recreation set a target date of September for completion of installation.

McCallister, Meyer and Cashen scheduled the first tournament for the last weekend in September. McCallister ordered 200 Wham-O #42 mold Joliet Frisbee Guild hot stamped discs and tee shirts with “Joliet Frisbee Guild” on the front and “Frisbee for the People” imprinted on the back for the tourney staff. They had posters printed and distributed to willing places of business throughout the community.

McCallister sent press releases to local and Chicago media. It was a one-round event with fivesomes and a shotgun start. Each player received a disc with $5.00 entry. The Joliet Frisbee Guild ceased to exist thereafter.
By the next season McCallister began using West Park Flyers as a promotional name. The first PDGA tournament at West Park was on June 30 & July 1, 1980. It was held on a Monday and Tuesday immediately following the 1980 Chicago N.A.F.D.S. because so many traveling players would be in the area. 100 Pros played in the two day tourney which culminated in a 9-hold finale featuring the top 4 players in both men’s and women’s divisions. There was a total of $5,000 in prize money with 100 entrants at $50 each and matching funds from Wham-O through Ed Headrick. Chicago ABC TV sent a crew out to provide some coverage on Monday afternoon.

In the following eight years McCallister played and promoted the sport of Disc Golf. He was involved in establishment and designs of New Lenox, Channahon and Shorewood. He directed more then 45 area tournaments including the first Illinois State and traveled to help players in other cities establish more courses.

Paul also played in the first two World Championships at La Mirada, CA and Huntsville, AL.

Summit Scoring Overview

After three weeks, we can start to look at which holes play the hardest out at Summit. The easiest and the hardest holes come at no surprise. Hole #9 plays the toughest at 3.27, registering bogies 33% of the times through. The easiest hole gets deuced 4 out of 5 times play, hole #15.

The only surprise to me, was hole #1 playing the second easiest. The scoring average was the same as both holes #5 and #8, but #1 is close to a 50/50 birdie hole.

Kicking Off Thursdays

Thursdays are back. Last week started at 5:15, the next few are at 5:30 and then 6:00 through the summer.

We had 24 come out last week and hope to see a few more this week.

Week to week points have been reset for the summer season, which will be a long one. Points will carry all the way through the summer. No breakup for spring/fall. There are a few changes to the scoring system this season as well. Any team who places (finishes in the money) will earn one additional point, and the first place team will earn an additional point yet. For example, last week 4 teams placed and each recieved a bonus point. Brian C and Ryan G took first and recieve a total of 2 bonus points.

Finishing Off March

Only four weeks left to earn points for trophy tags. The weather is warming up and with better weather comes better turnout, and with better turnout comes more points, which means it is still anyones game. Will Mike N take the cake for the 2nd straight season? Or will we see a surprise end of season run?

Congratulations to last weeks CTP winners: Mike F and Matt C. The discs were donated by Brad M, special thanks, Brad! This week's CTP on hole #4 is a brand new, Innova Blizzard Champion Boss -- weighing in at a heafty 156g. Many thanks to the Kamm's from Midwest Disc Golf for the disc donation.

Spectacular Showing for the Solstice Spectacular

25 people came to play on Christmas Eve for the 2011 Winter Solstice CTP Gift Spectacular! We played 11 holes twice and had a CTP prize for each hole. Pat B was the only one to win multiple CTPs resulting in 10 different players winning a CTP.

People have been asking about the points, what they mean, what do you get, etc, and I have not really answered that yet. This is still just a test run to see if the scoring system works out in the end. It heavily favors participation over performance. I have a small prize for the top 15 that will be settled at this upcoming Saturday meeting. Next spring, we plan to announce something official and have some adjustments so missing a week or two will not kill you in the rankings.

Going into the last meeting of 2011, here is the current top 15. Ties are broken by number of appearances. If there is still a tie after that, we will figure something out this week.

Flurries Possible, Fun Guaranteed

Up for CTP this week is the new Innova mid-range disc, the Star Lycan. This birdie thirsty realtive of the Make has a beefy rim that releases clean. The higher dome produces excellent glide, while the blunt profile provides a trustworthy finish. This disc is designed not to flip, but will hold a line nicely.

On top of the Lycan, Jordan M. was nice enough to donate three more discs. Thank you Jordan! The discs are: tye-dye pro Starfire-L (not pictured), a Yellow 175g DX Ice Bowl Destroyer, and a Red 171g Gateway Evolution Apache.

Finally Clear, Calm Skies

After a couple weeks of rain and wind, it looks we will have our first crisp and clear December meeting on Saturday. Cold is much easier to deal with when there is no wet to accompany. We are looking at a low wind day, solidly in the 20s.

Another Rainy Saturday, but the Scores Remain Low

For the second straight week Mike F. finds himself in the winner's circle after he and Jordan M. put up a -10 in tough conditions.

Power rankings leader, Mike N., and his partner Manoli M. shot a strong -8, which was good enough to take second.

October Wrap Up

In addition to the scanned score cards, the top 10 points leaders are now listed. We are still working with the point rankings (ie we want to award top 3 prizes per season, maybe drop the two lowest weeks from the point total so you don't get knocked down for missing a few weeks, etc.). If you have any suggestions, let us know.

For anyone interested, I also have a spreadsheet of all the raw round data, per hole scores included. You can view that via Google Docs. It is a mess now, I plan to have it look nice and pretty on the site eventually.

Weather has cooperated very nicely so far. We have had a few windy days, but nothing under 50 yet. The average winning score for October was -6, well below the summer average of -9. Unforuntately, by moving to Saturday, we were competing with some of the final PDGA events of the year. That coupled with a few extra tough holes (ie the 10A uphill shot) has produced some higher scores.

This past weekend (10/29), Fitz and Shawn M. put up the best score for October with -9, which narrowly passes Chris B. and Derek M.'s -8 from 10/08.

The average team score for the month: -2.

Hole 6, "mando" continues to play the hardest with an average score of 3.52 which saw only a single birdie in October by Peter R and Danny R. Mando saw 28 pars and 25 bogies and three double bogies.

Hole 4 has seen 25 birdies and plays the easiest at -2.40, followed by hole 8, which registered 23 birdies and an average score of 2.62.

The only hole to play easier this month than the summer season has been hole 10 (the down hill shot). Most in part to the basket location and the lack of play during the summer.

Most bogied hole: #6. Most Birdied: #4. Most Pars: #9.

Power Rankings

We are testing out a "Power Rankings" system where you earn points for each week you come out and play with us. For now, these rankings are just for fun. Next year, hopefully we have everything down and a good system working out to where we can offer end of season awards for certain achievements.

Here is the system I have come up with:

Everyone gets a point for showing up. After that, you get a point for every team that you beat.

Say 10 teams show up, the winning team will get 9 points for beating out the other nine teams, and 1 for coming out. So first place will receive 10 points. Second place will receive 9 points, third 8 points, etc etc.

Ties that are not broken all receive the same amount of points. That is determined at what the highest number of points award for a team in that place would be. Thus, using the same scenario as above, a three way tie for 5th place (out of 10 teams), each 5th place team would receive 6 points.

New Local Course: Community Park West DGC in Glenview

JuanBond from DGCR has been hard at work designing a 10 hole course in Glenview, Community Park West DGC.

Here is what he had to say about it:

This is my very first course design! I know, it's nothing spectacular, but I was lucky enough to find a park district 5 mins from my office that was receptive to the idea. The course should be playable sometime this weekend, I'll keep this thread and the course conditions updated accordingly.

Right now it is woodchip tees and Mach 5's (being delivered tomorrow!). The baskets will have Direct Hit Golf Flags on top, showing you when the wind is 6, 12, or 18+ mph. Next year the park plans to replace the woodchip tees with brick, and possibly put in some alternate pin locations and more tees. I expect the park will make many more upgrades to the course this year and next!

A Look at the Course Stats

We have been collecting the scores for 7 weeks now.

The course has seen 981 pars, 418 birdies, 109 bogies, 7 double bogies and an ace. The average outing (over two rounds) averages at nearly 4 under par (3.76).

No surprise to anyone, only one hole on the course plays over par. Hole #6 (aka Mando). The hole scoring average comes out to be 3.19, .19 over par. Of the seven double bogies (5s) that have been recorded, five of them came from hole #6, and bogies recorded nearly double that of the next highest total at 26 bogies.

Again, to no ones' surprise, hole #4 plays the easiest. 97 birds have been logged, as well as the only ace (Matt C) recorded over the past 7 weeks. The hole has only been played over par 6 times. This hole is the only hole that gets birdied more than pars.

The second easiest hole on the course surprised me a little. Hole #8 sports a scoring average of 2.58 and has seen the second highest number of birdies seen (70). Last week (8/25/2011) hole #8 only saw 6 pars, compared to 10 birdies.

Hole #9 and #2 play the next lowest at 2.68 and 2.69 respectively. Before seeing the numbers, I would have guessed that #2 plays much easier than #9. However, we assert that a missed line on #2 can leave a much more difficult upshot than on #9, therefor, even though they see similar amounts of birdies (55 and 57), #2 has a few more bogies recorded than #9 (8 to 4).

Hole #1 and #5 play exactly the same at 2.96, barely under par. They almost equal each other on every level. Pars: 124 to 126, Birdies: 20 to 19, Bogies: 14 to 13.

Only two of the last seven weeks played hole #7 from the short tees. However, in those two short weeks, #7 saw 19 birdies and 22 bogies. That nearly equals the number or birdies put up on the long tees (#7A) over five weeks. We started recording after the aces piled up from the short tee, but the long tee clearly adds the difficulty as desired.
