Registration is Live Online!

Church basketball season is right around the corner. This year, we are offering several different opportunities for children to participate, learn, and grow. We will host a weekly clinic for 4K/5K children on Friday nights from 5:30-6:10. Also, we will provide an "in-house" league for children in grade 1-4. Hopefully, these new endeavors will help our younger kids develop strong basketball skills while learning to approach sports and life from a Christian perspective.

This year's OBC Basketball Banquet will take place on Sunday, March 15 at 12:15pm (immediately following worship) in the Gym. All players are invited to sit together in worship at 11:00am. At the banquet, we will recognize each team and watch a slideshow of highlights from the season. Menu: Pizza, Salad, Dessert and Drinks. Coaches, players, and children under 5 are free. The SINGLE most important skill to learn as a coach is…

This may not surprise you, but I’ve found that the youth sports leagues around the country that spend time and energy training their volunteer coaches almost entirely focus on how to run drills, manage practices, etc.

And sadly, many leagues don’t even do that.

What may surprise you is that I don’t believe the drills and practice schedules are the most important part of becoming an effective coach.

The absolute most crucial skill that ALL coaches need training in, and that is usually entirely overlooked, is HOW to deliver information to each and every player on the team, with the goal of maximizing a player’s physical development, emotional well-being, and level of fun.

This issue transcends coaching of all levels. In fact, leading up to College Football National Championship there were literally thousands of articles written about the match-up, the players, the new playoff system, and dozens of other topics surrounding the game.

However, the article that stands out as most important is this one.

And while it saddens me that a coaching staff who chooses NOT to yell a its players as a valid method of teaching and motivating is “newsworthy,” I am thrilled to see positive coaching creeping its way into the most “yelly” of sports.

I would also encourage you to read a blog I wrote last year about my experience in college with a coach who was a negative yeller. You can find it here.

I regularly address how to become a more positive coach while still accomplishing your other goals like being competitive and winning, and will continue to do so here at GameChanger, but in the meantime another great resource I would encourage you to check out is the Positive Coaching Alliance. The PCA is a national non-profit organization dedicated entirely to coaching coaches in the methods of positive “Double-Goal” coaching and they do truly incredible and important work at all levels of the game.

And, as the football season really starts to wind down that can only mean one thing…pitchers and catchers report really soon!

Coaching 1st grade basketball can be challenging. The majority of books focus on teaching older, more skilled players. Here is a checklist of drills that most player in the 1st grade are capable of learning.

1st Grade Fundamental Checklist

Effort and Enjoyment

Can have FUN!
Can develop age-appropriate skills
Can be a good teammate
Can be LOUD and enthusiastic

Dribbling

Stationary Dribble (strong hand) with head down
Jogging Dribble (strong hand) with head down
Lay-up Dribble (strong hand) with head down
Dribble with head down in half court game
Dribble WITH violations (traveling double dribble) in half court game

Lay-ups

Know the aiming point: Top Corner of the Square
“BLOCK SHOT” Lay-up s / Block Lay-ups with no footwork
Dribble lay-up SHOT (no correct footwork)
“Mini” Mikan Lay-up Drill

Shooting

Knows the shooting fundamentals: BEEF – balance, elbow, eyes, follow through
Hold the ball correctly: line up the seams with shooting hand, non-shooting hand cover the side seams
Imaginary shooting: Good “imaginary” shooting without the ball
Right block shot, Left block shot (occasionally makes shots)
left baseline, center, right baseline (occasionally makes shots)

Passing

Know “TIPS TO TARGET” & “THUMBS DOWN”
Stationary chest pass: Able to make a decent chest pass
Stationary bounce pass: Able to make a decent bounce pass, better at selecting the proper point to have the ball bounce (3/4ths the distance).
Game chest pass: Unable to regularly make a chest pass in half game. The pass most commonly used pass is a lob pass that is thrown in the general direction of a teammate.
Game bounce pass: Rarely attempted in a game situation.

Catching

Able to have hands up in receiving position.
Stationary chest pass: Begins to catch a chest pass fairly consistently
Stationary bounce pass: Able to catch a bounce pass consistently
Game pass: Seldom able to catch a pass in a game situation.

Defense

Able to get into a fair defensive stance.

Basketball Practices Begin This Week!

With basketball games likely starting in December, we will have organizational practices beginning this week.

This week each age group will gather for an initial practice to judge interest and divide into teams. A permanent practice schedule will be set for subsequent weeks.

This week's schedule will be:
Monday Night -
6:00pm - Mite Girls
7:00pm - Mite Boys

Tuesday Night -
5:30pm - Biddys 8.5' goal
6:15pm - Biddys 10' goal

Thursday Night -
6:00pm - Jr/Sr Girls
7:00pm - Jr/Sr Boys

The church basketball season is set to begin earlier than normal this year - possibly as early as the first weekend in December.

Coaching 1st Grade Basketball: Teaching Lay-ups

A lay-up is the most basic way to score in the game of basketball. At the younger levels (K – Grade 3), focusing on using the correct footwork can be frustrating and futile. Very few developing players can use the correct footwork when attempting a lay-up.

So what lay-up fundamentals can you teach to younger players?

First, teach the players the correct aiming point for making a lay-up.

Use the backboard and aim for the top corner of the square: If players can understand the importance of identifying the correct aiming point when taking a lay-up, that is a great starting point. Ask your team what they should aim for when taking a lay-up. Have a little fun with the answers by following the advice of the players.

Below are the typical responses:

“THE BACKBOARD”: This is the best one. Shoot the ball all over the backboard and miss. Look at the player who gave your target and say “I hit the backboard, what is wrong. I am doing what you told me to do. I hit the backboard! Why isn’t it going in?”

“THE SQUARE”: With this response the players are getting closer, but you can still can have some fun by hitting the square, yet still missing the shot. Shoot the ball all over “the square” and intentionally miss. Look at the player who gave your target and say “I hit the square, what is wrong. I am doing what you told me to do. Why isn’t it going in? What is wrong?”

“THE TOP CORNER OF THE SQUARE”: Bingo! This is the correct response and the response EACH player should give to you the rest of the season and their playing career.

Once the players understand where to aim the basketball, the next step in the lay-up process is applying their knowledge to the shot.

1st Grade Basketball: 10 Youth Basketball Coaching Tips

Coaching 1st grade basketball can be a huge challenge. It is important to have the players use smaller balls (youth size), shoot on lower hopes, and play with less the 5 players on a team. It can be hectic, but we highly recommend that each player have a ball to maximize repetitions.

There are so many resources for basketball, however very little for the younger grades. Over the next several weeks and months, we will be posting some drills and ideas that might be useful. We would love your feedback. For additional information, please visit our coaching youth basketball page.

OBC Basketball Begins Soon!

Sign Ups are Online Now
Church league basketball games begin the first week in January. Practices will begin over the next two weeks. You can sign up now by clicking HERE. Registration fees are $20 for Biddy (K-4th) teams and $30 for all older teams. You will have the option to pay online or bring a check to the church office. Please sign up as soon as possible so that we will know how many teams we will need in each division.

Biddy Practice Begins Next Tuesday at 6pm
All Biddy (K-4th) players will meet for practice in the OBC gym next Tuesday, November 19 from 6:00-7:00pm. At the end of practice, players will be divided into teams. Please make every effort to be at practice so that the coaches can organize the teams in the best possible way.
