Three killed in crash involving Grayling golf team

EXCELSIOR TWP. — A Kalkaska woman was among the three persons killed in a tragic two-vehicle accident in that also involved members of the Grayling High School boys golf team in the morning hours of Monday, April 29, according to Michigan State Police reports.

MSP officials stated the accident occurred shortly before 11:25 a.m. Monday on County Road 612, at the intersection with Crawford Lake Road, in Excelsior Township. The crash resulted in three fatalities, with seven other victims transported and admitted to the Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

“The preliminary investigation shows that a white Ford Windstar van was eastbound on County Road 612,” a release by the MSP stated. “A silver Ford Freestar van was northbound on Crawford Lake Road NE, approaching the intersection and stop sign at County Road 612. Six members of the Grayling High School golf team and their coach occupied this vehicle.”

MSP officials reported the white Windstar van was driven by 45-year-old Rhonda Mitchell, with her daughter and granddaughter also in the vehicle. Mitchell's daughter, 27-year-old Cassandra Stapleton, was fatally injured. Mitchell and Stapleton were both from Kalkaska.

Three victims were ejected from the silver van, police reported. One of those ejected, 18-year-old student-athlete Louis Menard, was fatally injured. The driver of the van, 28-year-old coach Jason Potter, was also fatally injured. A second person ejected from the silver Freestar was pinned under the white Windstar, according to police reports.

The seven surviving crash victims were transported to and admitted at the Munson Medical Center. As of late Monday night, MSP officials reported two as being listed in critical condition, two in serious condition and three listed in fair condition.

According to police reports, the two vehicles collided in the intersection, sending both vehicles off the roadway into an open yard on the northeast corner of the intersection.

“The silver van appears to have rolled at least once before landing upright, while the white van rolled several times before coming to rest upright,” MSP officials stated. “At this time, it is unknown for certain if speed limits and/or traffic control devices were observed.”

MSP troopers were reportedly flagged down as they arrived on scene moments after the crash occurred. The white Windstar van was on fire and, after calling in the crash, troopers extinguished the fire and began assisting the victims with the help of several witnesses. The MSP accident reconstructionist was called to the scene and will continue to investigate and assist troopers in the investigation.

The county roadway was closed for several hours Monday afternoon, as MSP officials investigated the accident scene. It was open again to traffic shortly before 5 p.m.

MSP troopers were assisted by the Kalkaska County Sheriff Department, Coldsprings-Excelsior Fire & Rescue Station No. 6, Kalkaska Township Fire Department Station No. 7 and Northflight EMS, including both ground and air crews.

News of the tragedy was quickly communicated on social media websites, such as Facebook, with residents of the Grayling area and supporters of the high school's athletic teams posting and asking for people to keep the golf team in their prayers.

Also, a Facebook page, “Community Vigil For The Grayling Golf Team,” was posted on Monday by Rachel Greenway and Hannah Golnick.

“As many of you know, our local Grayling Golf team was involved in a terrible car accident today on their way to a golf meet in Kalkaska County,” the page reads. “Six players and the coach were injured.  “It is time for our community to come together and help each other get through this heart breaking event. I have gotten clearance to hold a vigil in the clubhouse of the Grayling Country Club. Please feel free to bring candles, keepsakes of those involved, pictures or anything else you would like to remember and honor our students, friends and family members.”

While the names of the other injured players were not released by the MSP, the Facebook page states that golf team members Mason Krey, Tyler Summers, Jake Hinkle, Gunner Metzer and Dallas Johnson were also involved in the fatal crash.

According to the Facebook page, the vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, at the Grayling Country Club, the golf team's home course, located on the I-75 Business Loop in Grayling.

Lakeland Golf hopes three juniors will bring them tournament success

BOYS GOLF PREVIEW: Defending state champion Brother Rice headlines area list of contenders in 2013

Of all the spring sports, it can be argued that none have been as affected by the chilly start to the spring than boys golf.

Until some nice days finally appeared this past week, it’s been pretty much been nothing but practice sessions in domes and delaying actual tryouts until teams could get outside.

But matches and tournaments did consistently start to be played this past week, so maybe the worst is behind area teams and players.

In light of that, here is a look at Oakland County’s top boys golf teams heading into the 2013 season.

1. Birmingham Brother Rice — It certainly not anything different to see the Warriors at the top spot entering a given season since they typically have one of the more talented teams year in and year out. What is different is that for the first time in 14 years, Brother Rice gets the luxury of defending a state title. After years of disappointing finishes at the state tournament, Brother Rice finally broke through and won its first state crown since 1998 at the Division 1 tournament last June. A repeat is possible since Brother Rice returns first team all-state golfer Kyle Gaines, a senior who has signed with Detroit Mercy, and junior Jeremy Ball, who was honorable mention all-state last season. Senior Jeremy Glod and junior Joey Hildebrand are no slouches either and are capable of leading the team at any given tournament or match.

2. Novi Detroit Catholic Central — Longtime head coach Bill Hayes may have retired over the offseason, but the same quality team should still exist at Catholic Central under new head coach Mark Anderson. State champions in 2010, the Shamrocks certainly have the ability to reclaim that spot as the state’s best. Senior Charlie Green is entering his fourth year on varsity and is one of the state’s best, but he’ll have plenty of support in the lineup. Senior Corey Szmadzinski has signed with Dayton, senior Austin Kolezar was medalist at Monday’s Holiday Inn Express Invitational that had an outstanding field, senior Preston Dooley has signed with Elon University in North Carolina and sophomore Glen Tiot had a solid freshman season last year.

3. Lake Orion — The Dragons were the team to beat in the OAA Red before the season started, and they validated that this past Monday by winning the first league tournament at Boulder Pointe. Lots of experience is back for a Lake Orion team that has had back-to-back heartbreaking finishes at regionals that prevented them from qualifying for the state tournament. Seniors Alex Waelchli and Mason Gorris are four-year varsity players who were both honorable mention all-state players last season, and junior Griffin Beeler shot a 2-under par round of 70 on Monday and is entering his third year on varsity. A deep top-five will likely be rounded out by junior Ben Gorcyca and sophomore Schuyler Werth, both of whom played regularly on varsity last season.

4. Novi — The defending county champion, the Wildcats have the means to defend that title and qualify for the state tournament this year with an experienced and talented group returning. Senior Brad Kozinski and junior Garret Buckley form as good of a 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup as anyone has. If Novi can get consistent play from seniors Jason Carless and Mike Wenzl and sophomore Bryan Fegert, the sky is the limit.

5. Rochester Adams — Just like Lake Orion, Adams barely missed out on qualifying for the state tournament last year but has plenty of returning talent that will not only help it contend in the OAA Red, but make a serious bid to qualify for the state tournament. Senior Eric Busa is back after missing regionals last year with an injury, Brandon Barrows is one of the state’s best sophomores and is coming off an impactful freshman season, and senior Marcus Robinson also returns to the top-five.

6. Stoney Creek — The Cougars proved by finishing second at the first OAA Red tournament last week that they’ll be a team to be reckoned with, and that should continue to be the case all season. Stoney Creek has a terrific duo at the top of the lineup in senior Spencer Lenzion and junior Michael Doyle. Senior Richie Ingle and junior Michael Linihan are also capable of shooting low scores on a given day.

7. Clarkston — A team that doesn’t have a true “star,” Clarkston will have a leg up on competitors though in that it has a deep squad that can get contributions from as many as eight golfers. At the OAA Red tournament last week, five golfers shot no worse than 83. Jack Alli, Alec Genter and Cam Krausman are the seniors on the team, Nick Badgley and T.J. Craven are two juniors who will contribute, while Brendon Graham, Andrew Gibson and Mitch Rogowski comprise a promising core of sophomores.

8. Lakeland — The Eagles have talent that can make them fly far, but the only problem is that qualifying for the state tournament is such a difficult task with teams like Brother Rice and Catholic Central in their regional. Still, Lakeland can be a quality team behind a good crop of juniors in Jake Kneen, Alex Kleckner and Justin Pahl.

9. Rochester — Gone to graduation is Eric Shyu, one of the state’s best players last year, but the cupboard isn’t completely bare for Rochester because there is a solid top-four in place. Michael Busse is one of the state’s best freshman who will make an immediate impact, and juniors Mike Murri, Scott Difilippo and Ludovic Clavete-LaChapele bring the experience and the threat of low scores each time they tee it up. Depth behind those four is a concern for Paul Marti, so those four will have to perform well at key tournaments later in the season.

10. Birmingham Seaholm — The Maples could’ve really been a threat to qualify for the Division 1 state tournament if senior Francesco Ruffino, who won the Mr. Golf award as a sophomore and qualified for the U.S. Amateur after his freshman year, was in the fold. But Ruffino left the team midway through his junior season last year to concentrate on playing in amateur tournaments, and he decided not to come out and play high school golf this spring. Regardless, Seaholm will still be solid with seniors Tim Pearce and Alec Tropea back for their fourth years on varsity. Sophomore Alex Krivan will also make big contributions.

Others (in alphabetical order)

Auburn Hills Oakland Christian, which won the Division 4 state tournament two years ago and finished third last year, hopes to once again be the area’s top small school behind juniors John VanNoord, Aaron Kostich, Spencer Haupert and Austin Miller.

Birmingham Groves returns a solid group of veterans led by senior Calvin Greer, who was honorable mention all-county last season. Juniors Johnny Reid and Jordan Bohannon and senior Kenny O’Hanlon round out the top-four.

Birmingham Detroit Country Day will have one of the area’s top golfers back in junior Rishi Patel, who was all-state honorable mention as a sophomore last season.

Farmington could be a team that’ll be a factor in big tournaments behind a good core of juniors in Matt Goldi, Nick Heffron and Matt LeGault.

Milford will be a team that is sophomore-dominated. Sophomore Jeffrey Clemence will likely be the team’s best player.

North Farmington will have to move on to life without all-stater Max Kollin, but the Raiders do have a couple of promising sophomores in Austin Alexander, who qualified individually for the Division 1 state tournament last year, and Ryan Masell.

Oxford lost some quality player to graduation, but the Wildcats do return a fine junior in J.J. Lewis, who is entering his third year on varsity.

Another team that can contend in the OAA Red is Troy, which has one of the area’s best juniors back in Christian Harnishfeger, and sophomore coming off a good freshman season in Manak Singh.

The list isn't mine but after watching many of these golfers in both junior and high school play, the list is pretty much right. Do you agree with the list? Check to see whose on the list. The story is by Keith Dunlap of the Oakland Press. My All-County team happens after the MHSAA Finals.

1. Charlie Green, Novi Detroit Catholic Central Sr. – A four-year varsity player who can single-handedly keep Catholic Central in contention at any tournament. Signed with Michigan State, Green had a 75.3 tournament average last year and is the defending Catholic League champion.

2. Kyle Gaines, Birmingham Brother Rice Sr. – Emerged as a top player last year, being named first team all-state after collecting a 76.2 tournament average five top-10 finishes for the state champion Warriors. He has signed with Detroit Mercy.

3. Eric Busa, Rochester Adams Sr. – If not for the fact Busa had a back injury last year that forced him to miss the regional tournament, Adams might have qualified for the state tournament. Coming off a year where he had nine top-10 finishes and a tournament average of 76.

4. Jeremy Ball, Birmingham Brother Rice Jr. – Coming off two outstanding seasons as an underclassmen, Ball figures to be even better as a veteran of the Warriors. Was honorable mention all-state last season after he had a 75.3 tournament average.

5. Brandon Barrows, Rochester Adams Soph. – Had an outstanding freshman season last year, qualifying individually for the state tournament in Division 1 and finishing with a 74.5 tournament average.

6. Alex Waelchli, Lake Orion Sr. – A four-year varsity player who has signed with Oakland University, Waelchli was honorable mention all-state last season in Division 1.

7. Mason Gorris, Lake Orion Sr. – Another four-year player for the Dragons who was honorable mention all-state in 2012, Gorris teams with Waelchli to form as good of a duo at the top of the lineup as there is.

Rishi Patel follows through to a top finish

8. Rishi Patel, Birmingham Detroit Country Day Jr. – Named honorable mention all-state in Division 2, Patel had won two AJGA tournaments last summer and is poised for another big year.

9. Brad Kozinski, Novi Sr. – The Wildcats usually have strong golfers at the top of the lineup, and Kozinski is the latest in that line.

10. Gavin Garris, South Lyon Sr. – All-KLAA performer who tied for medalist honors at the Oakland County tournament last season, Garris is entering his third year on varsity and should be an all-state candidate by season’s end.

11. Garret Buckley, Novi Jr. – Can be the top golfer on any given day and teams with Kozinski to form a wonderful top-two for the Wildcats.

12. John VanNoord, Auburn Hills Oakland Christian Sr. – Takes over as the No. 1 player for the Lancers and should be one of the best all year in the county and a contender to win individual title in Division 4.

13. Jeremy Glod, Birmingham Brother Rice Sr. – Just how deep are the Warriors? Glod might be the No. 3 golfer in the lineup, but he’s capable of being No. 1 on any given day.

14. Corey Szmadzinski, Novi Detroit Catholic Central Sr. - Signed with Dayton, Smadzinski is as good of a No. 2 golfer as there is in the area.

15. Spencer Lenzion, Stoney Creek Sr. – Good veteran leader for the Cougars who can shoot low anytime.

16. Mike Murri, Rochester Jr. – A three-year varsity performer who will be looked upon to help carry the Falcons at the top of the lineup.

17. Michael Busse, Rochester Fr. – One of the state’s top freshman, look for Busse to be the next great golfer to come through a tradition-rich program.

18. Michael Doyle, Stoney Creek Jr. – Already following in the footsteps of older brother Dan nicely at Stoney Creek.

19. Tim Pearce, Birmingham Seaholm Sr. – A four-year varsity player who should be the top man in place of Francesco Ruffino all season for the Maples.

20. Johnny Fortuna, Bloomfield Hills Lahser Sr. – The top man for the Knights qualified individually for the Division 3 state tournament last season.

21. Griffin Beeler, Lake Orion Jr. – Entering his third year on varsity, Beeler showed what he can do when on by shooting a 70 at Boulder Pointe in the first OAA Red tournament of the year.

22. Jake Kneen, Lakeland Jr. – An honorable mention all-county performer each of his first two seasons for the Eagles who should shine again this spring.

23. Alex Kleckner, Lakeland Jr. – Just like Kneen, he’s been honorable mention all-county his first two years of high school and could make this a season to remember for Lakeland.

24. Justin Pahl, Lakeland Jr. – Teams up with Kneen and Kleckner to form a nice trio for the Eagles.

25. Preston Dooley, Novi Detroit Catholic Central Sr. - A No. 1 golfer on many teams, Dooley has signed with Elon University in North Carolina.
David Smith-Everest Collegiate. Tied for first at Oakland County last year. 5^th at districts, 1^st at Regional’s and 15^th at States.

Women's Clinic will go over USGA Rules and showcase the MWGA Tour

     One thing about the MWGA. They are active promoting the game for junior golfers and take the game seriously in a fun way. They are having a clinic in West Bloomfield on April 27th, and USGA rules and information about their tour will be discussed. The cost is nominal. The information is below.

West Bloomfield, MI (April 16, 2013). Here’s an opportunity to learn about the Michigan Women’s Golf Association, a great women’s golf organization, as well as gain some knowledge about the USGA Rules of Golf.

On Saturday, April 27, the MWGA will present an MWGA Orientation, highlighting what’s available and new in the Association in 2013 for female amateur golfers of all skill levels.

In addition, joint with the Executive Women’s Golf Association, the MWGA will host its annual Rules Clinic, which will be presented by Jeanne Myers, GAM Assistant Director of Course Rating and past GAM President.
Myers has officiated at more than 100 USGA amateur and professional tournaments, was rules official for the MI PGA for 13 years and has conducted over 300 rules seminars. One of her most notable accomplishments was authoring the Equitable Stroke Control Procedure that went into effect in 1991 and is still in use today. In honor of her service to golf, Myers has received several accolades, including the Jean Dodds Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women’s District Golf Association and induction into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. Jeanne’s presentation of the USGA Rules of Golf is not only informative, but fun. Knowing the rules of golf can help improve one’s score and understanding of the game.

Top 50 Junior Tour is offering college scholarship opportunities in 2013

The Top 50 Junior Tour is preparing its members for the spring golf season, providing hundreds of local students with free competitive golf tournaments and the opportunity to earn college scholarships.

The Top 50 Junior Tour was launched in 2003 and has since grown and expanded across the state of Michigan as well as to Arizona and Florida. The National Golf Scholarship Association has combined efforts with the Top50 Junior Tour and Student Golfer Magazine to provide students (ages 9 to 18) with one of the most comprehensive student development programs in the country.

“This is a great program for any local students who want to improve their golf game and earn college scholarships,” said founder and PGA Golf Pro Daniel Thomas. “This is the only program that factors in their golf score, GPA and community service hours when awarding scholarships, so they don’t have to be the best golfer to be successful when participating in the tour.”

The primary goal of the NGSA and Top 50 Junior Tour is to encourage students to participate in the game of golf, enhance their golf skills and build character in the participants. The unique format of the Top 50 Junior Tour provides students with numerous goal-oriented competitive playing opportunities, student recognition and scholarship awards for deserving students who have the desire to attend college.

There are numerous opportunities to be awarded scholarship points including tournament participation, skills challenges, community service, rules of golf exams, essays and academics. Five out of seven seniors from the Junior Elite Training Team Class of 2013 are receiving college scholarships and playing golf at the collegiate level.

The Top 50 Junior Tour is also preparing to host its annual Junior Golf Marathon in July. The marathon is an important fundraising event to raise money for the National Golf Scholarship Association, which provides local students with thousands of rounds of free competitive tournament golf and the opportunity for hundreds of students to earn college scholarships regardless of their ability.

Arielle Grondin and Bogey Golf Tour raises over 12 thousand grand for Cystic Fibrosis

The parents of Arielle Grondin must be so proud! When you have a child that raises over twelve-thousand grand for Cystic Fibrosis, its a moment that anyone can say "We did something right." Arielle, with the help of her parents that run the Bogey Golf Tour, she was able to surpass her goal of ten thousand dollars and those with this dreaded disease will have another tool to help them while suffering from this deadly disease. Arielle is not just a fundraiser, she helped educate those in the audience my being an MC for the event. The press release is below.

Bogey Golf Tour helps Local Teen Surpasses Fundraising Goal!!!!!

Arielle Grondin raised $12,126 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada at the third annual Music for Life Concert held at Johnny Shotz this past Saturday April 6, 2013. Grondin surpassed her goal of $10,000 with the help of donations from local businesses, family, friends, and all who attended the event. Thanks to Johnny Shotz for hosting the event, and Jam Space for organizing the great line up of bands, the event was a huge success. 17 year old Arielle emceed the event, did a power point presentation educating attendees about her battle with Cystic Fibrosis between sets, and accepted a cheque from Todd and Michelle Grondin owners of the Bogey Golf Tour for $4800 (see attached photo). HOLLAND, MI – The 17-team field in Saturday's Zeeland East Invitational played more than five hours of golf in brutal weather conditions ranging from snow to bitterly cold wind chills in the teens.
The elements didn't seem to affect Rockford's A.J. Varekois.
The junior fired a 1-under 70 at Winding Creek Golf Course to win medalist honors and lead the Rams to a tournament title. Varekois, a returning all-conference performer, maintained an upbeat approach to the unseasonable weather.
“You have to almost take it as a challenge, and look at it on the bright side,” Varekois said. “You don't always get to play out there, so when you do, you have to look at it on the positive side. I got off to a rough start, but I still kept my head up and it really helped.”

Varekois managed to hit only seven greens in regulation, but was aided by stellar play around the greens and a steady putter.
He recorded five birdies and four bogies, including a run of three birdies in a row.
“I didn't hit the ball particularly well, but my short game was there,” Varekois said. “I've been shooting around that score all year long, so it was nice to take it to a tournament, especially with not being able to play that much in the offseason because of the weather. I'll definitely take that score in these conditions.”
Varekois' low round propelled the Rams to a team total of 314. Rockford was seven shots ahead of runner-up Muskegon Reeths-Puffer. Forest Hills Northern (323), Portage Central (331) and Forest Hills Eastern (334) rounded out the top five.
The Rams also received solid scores from sophomore Joel Pietila (77), who finished third, sophomore Michael Cooper (83) and freshman Kevin Kamis (84).
It was Rockford's first tournament of the season after Thursday's Kent County Invitational was postponed, and coach Eric Cullum said his team had played only 21 holes before Saturday.
“For us to shoot 314 on a day like this in the middle of the year – I would've been satisfied – for us to do it (Saturday) with literally no practice, I'm blown away,” he said. “We had two goals today. I told them to commit to everything you do, and absolutely no pouting. I saw no pouting, and that was key.”
Cullum was impressed with Varekois' play.
“He can score, that's a fact,” Cullum said. “And when we get him hitting a lot of greens and get him on the offensive, Lord knows what can happen. I'm proud of him and excited that he got his year started with a win and a good number.”
Jenison senior Logan Sochacki shot a 5-over 76 and placed runner-up. He said the conditions were unlike any he had endured before.
“This might be the worst weather I've ever had at a high school event, but I played good,” he said. “The course was a little wet, but I got around and I drove it real good. On a day like this, you just have to accept it and have fun with it. I actually like it when it's a little windy and wet.”
Forest Hills Northern had a pair of golfers in the top ten. Drew Pennington and Charlie Bacle each shot 79 and placed sixth and eighth, respectively.

Guan should be in no hurry

Tianlang Guan is now the low amateur at the Masters. Great accomplishment. Now what's next? The eighth grader has created a great buzz this week by being the low amateur and the youngest player to ever have that distinction. This is great in so many levels.

When Tiger was that age he was probably only dreaming of what Guan did and hoping for an invite to arguably the world's most prestigious tournament. Guan has now been there and done that and if his game improves, perhaps he will try to play the US Amateur later this summer.

Another area I like for him is how humble he is. It is only natural to find out what his future plans are and while he could make a buck going pro, I imagine sponsors will make him want for nothing. As he said after his final Master's round, "I've not decided yet, but it won't be too early because there's still a lot of things to learn to improve," he said about turning pro. "So nothing to rush."

What ever he does, he needs to resist burnout. For one, do not play too much golf with Tiger. Other than the golf, Tiger is not much of a role model.

As most people know, golf has gone global. Like cell towers last decade, there are still plenty of hot patches where golf is played in Asia and many more that could care less. A true superstar Asian on the PGA Tour would be good for the game. It might just raise the stakes like the ladies of the LPGA have found out.

Right now, that is premature. Guan is simply the low amateur. It seems like only yesterday that Tiger was on the prowl. Now he is the hunted. Could Guan or someone like him be that next superstar that transcends golf?

Tianlang Guan is low amateur

AUGUSTA, Ga., -- Tianlang Guan completed his first Masters on Sunday with a final round 3-over 75 to finish 12 over for the tournament.
The 14-year-old Chinese eighth-grader added to his already extensive list of firsts in the Masters by being the low amateur in the event, the youngest to achieve this feat in the 77 years of the tournament.

"I think the first couple rounds, I played pretty good," said Guan, who didn't make worse than a bogey all week. "I feel a little bit tired today. So yeah, there's still a lot of things to improve.
"My short game's good, but still need to be better. My driver probably needs to be longer. Yes, I mean, everything needs to improve."
Guan made the 36-hole cut on Friday after incurring a 1-shot penalty for slow play. He is the second winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship to finish as low amateur.
In 2011, Hideki Matsuyama tied for 27th in the Masters.
As the Asia-Pacific Amateur winner, Guan is exempt into the final qualifier for the Open Championship, set for July 18 at Muirfield in Scotland.
In the meantime, he plans to play in a couple of professional tournaments. But he has no plans of turning pro anytime soon.
"I've not decided yet, but it won't be too early because there's still a lot of things to learn to improve," he said about turning pro. "So nothing to rush."

Bob Costas, its easy to criticize someone when you have nothing to lose

Bob Costas criticizes CBS for failing to call out Augusta National’s ‘history of racism and sexism.

The headline is true. What Bob Costas said is a fact. The only thing is Bob Costas works for a competing network and can say what he wants without a slap on the hands. To my knowledge, Bob Costas has never called golf and I have never heard of him playing in a celebrity pro am. That is all fine. Bob, you work for NBC Sports who has not had the contract to cover the Masters in like ...... ever.

Going on the Dan Patrick radio show, he said the Masters' discrimination policies against minorities and women and the CBS Network ignoring them on the air is something that needs to be addressed.

To quote: What no CBS commentator has ever alluded to, even in passing, even during a rain delay, even when there was time to do so, is Augusta's history of racism and sexism. Even when people were protesting just outside the grounds—forget about taking a side—never acknowledging it. So not only will I never work the Masters because I'm not at CBS, but I'd have to say something and then I would be ejected."

It is true. At the Master's, saying anything that is not in their lingo book is a permanent ban to the black hole in Master's golf broadcasting.We all know about Jack Whitaker and more recently Gary McCord who now sleep with the fishes for the powers that be at Augusta. Jim Nantz does not want a similar fate nor do the other commentators on the broadcast.

My thing is Costas is picking a fight and doing it without the stones to do anything that would create leverage. He is hiding behind his NBC badge knowing he doesn't care about golf and never will. NBC is unlikely to get the contract to ever carry this tournament so buddy, keep your mouth shut.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - During this Masters week, when everyone involved with the production of this most famous golf tournament, present company included, gets a little dewy-eyed and nostalgic about the sanctified history of Augusta National Golf Club, it's worth remembering that not everyone regards this tournament in quite the same way ... and that "a tradition unlike any other" has very different meanings to different people.

Appearing on Dan Patrick's radio show on Friday, Bob Costas of NBC Sports took on the Masters and, more specifically, CBS. Costas took issue with the fact that CBS completely ignores Augusta's very real, and very recent, history of gender- and race-based discrimination. As Costas said:

What no CBS commentator has ever alluded to, even in passing, even during a rain delay, even when there was time to do so, is Augusta's history of racism and sexism. Even when people were protesting just outside the grounds—forget about taking a side—never acknowledging it. So not only will I never work the Masters because I'm not at CBS, but I'd have to say something and then I would be ejected.

He's correct. Augusta National has a history of removing media personnel who don't toe the line. Jack Whitaker was banned from the club for calling a collection of patrons a "mob," and Gary McCord hasn't been back since 1994, when he referred to the greens as "bikini-waxed" and the hills beyond one hole as "body bags."

Costas concedes that he finds Augusta beautiful, he considers Augusta National chairman Billy Payne a friend, and that he's played the course. Even so, he believes that the club's difficult and treacherous history should have been recognized. He doesn't name names, but it's clearly obvious who he's talking about here:

I think somebody should have had the guts to do it along the way. Broadcaster, executive, somebody should have said to someone at Augusta, 'Look, this is an issue. And this is not 'Nightline' or 'Meet The Press,' we understand that. But this is an issue. And it's an elephant in the room. And we're going to address it as concisely as we can, but we're going to address it so our heads are not in the collective sand trap.'

Give Costas credit, he has no fear of injecting political issues into sporting events. Sometimes it's evocative and necessary, as when he criticized the Olympics for not honoring the victims of the 1972 Munich massacre. And sometimes he seems to overreach and preach, as when he held forth on gun control during a Sunday night football telecast.
Still, he speaks his mind and says what he believes, and among media members, that's something of a rarity. It's worth remembering that while Augusta National is indeed one of the most beautiful places on earth, that beauty is neither all-encompassing nor retroactive

The USGA will retire the US Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship (WAPL) after 2014, which means a public course golfer will have only this year and next to play in this prestigious event. Many WAPL Champions have played in the LPGA such as Michelle Wie and Yani Tseng. The USGA will celebrate the rich history of the WAPL at this year’s Championship and next, making them extra special.

The 2013 Championship will be played at Oklahoma University at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman, OK June 17 – 22. Practice rounds are June 15 and 16. Two rounds of Stroke Play on June 17 and 18 will determine the 64 players who will go to Match Play June 19 – 22, with the Final Match being 36 holes.

There are 33 qualifying sites from Alaska and Hawaii to Wyoming. The 18-hole Michigan Sectional Qualifying Round will be held at Mystic Creek in Milford on Tues., May 28. Mystic Creek has generously waived the green fees for the qualifier. Jack discusses his distant relationship with Tiger

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Jack Nicklaus has shared his secrets and strategy about Augusta National with anyone who wanted to learn from a six-time Masters champion, a list that includes Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Nicolas Colsaerts. But not Tiger Woods.
Nicklaus said he's never had a sit-down with the man who is trying to break his records.
In fact, he said they hardly talk at all.
"I never really had a conversation with Tiger that lasted more than a minute or two – ever," Nicklaus said Thursday morning after hitting the ceremonial tee shot. "He stayed away from me from a conversation standpoint. Never had a conversation on the Masters in general. I've said, 'Hello, how are you doing? Nice playing this year. You've played very well.' End of conversation. People ask me, 'Has Tiger ever talked to you about his record?' Never one word."

Nicklaus said he was surprised Woods hasn't talked to him about the Masters, though he's not the least bit offended. Woods, after all, figured out the course quickly. He won the Masters three times in his first six years as a pro.
"He's got his own focus and what he does, and I respect that," Nicklaus said. "I respect when somebody is involved in their deal. They concentrate on what they do and not what you did. That's OK. It's not my position to go talk to him about it. I respect that. I wouldn't intrude on that."
Even so, it offered some rare insight into the relationship between Woods and Nicklaus, with whom he has been linked ever since Woods was a youngster and kept a timeline of the milestones Nicklaus achieved in his career.
They spent time together at the Presidents Cup during the four times Nicklaus was captain, and Nicklaus has sat at his side during the champion's interview the five times that Woods won the Memorial. Nicklaus even shared one story from the Presidents Cup when he noticed Woods and Mickelson spending time together. Nicklaus had ready plenty of stories about the tension between them.
"I said, 'You guys seem to get along.' And he said, 'Yeah, we get along fine.' I said, 'What’s all this about that other stuff?' He says, 'I don't know. Just press stuff.' So I said, 'You guys want to play together?' And he said, 'I'd rather not.'
"The point being, he's got a little bit of his number," Nicklaus said. "And he doesn't want anyone to get really close to him because he feels like he's got a little dominance over them. I understand that. You've got to respect that."
Nicklaus and Woods played together only once in the majors, the opening two rounds of the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla. They also were teammates in the old "Battle at Bighorn." Woods once told a story of asking Nicklaus about all the rivalries he faced during three decades and how Nicklaus told him, "Just make sure you're always part of the conversation." Nicklaus said even that chat in South Africa didn't last very long.
"I get along fine with Tiger. I like Tiger. I don't have an issue with Tiger. There's always pleasantries and so forth," he said.
Woods moved from Orlando, Fla., to the West Palm Beach area last year after building a home along the ocean with his own miniature range. The speculation was which golf club Woods might join, and he settled on The Medalist. Several other pros are members at The Bear's Club, which Nicklaus built as his home course in Florida.
"I asked him when he came to Florida if we wanted to come to The Bear's Club," Nicklaus said. "He stayed away from it. He didn't want to intrude where I was. He never told me why, but other people told me, 'He says he didn't feel comfortable being there where I was because that was a record he was trying to break.' I said, 'I don't care about that. We'd like to have you if you want to play and be part of it.' He comes out and plays quite often. I'd include him in everything.
"But everybody has their own personality. That's not a fault. It's not a criticism. It just is what it is."
So what kind of golf talk is Woods missing out on?
Nicklaus spoke mainly about taking risks only when the percentages and the situation called for it and realize that a shot into the middle of just about any green at Augusta National will leave a reasonable chance at birdie.
He still thinks about the 3-wood he hit into the water on the 15th hole that cost him in the final round of the 1971 Masters.
"One shot shouldn't be a shot that puts you out of the tournament," Nicklaus said. "I needed to make 4. I didn't need to make 3. I should have laid the ball up. Why put yourself out of the tournament on one shot? That's the thing I stress.
"I wouldn't take risks unless it was necessary to take risks," he said. "These guys that come to me and ask me about the tournament, basically what I tell them is there's a half-dozen shots on this golf course (where) you can put yourself out of the tournament."
He mentioned the tee shot on the par-5 second hole; the second shot into No. 11; the tee shot on the par-3 12th. The tee shot and the second shot on the par-3 13th; and the second shot on the par-5 15th.
"Think about what you're doing on them," Nicklaus said. "If you've got a 50-50 chance of doing it, certainly I wouldn't be doing it. If you've got a 90-10 chance, think real hard about it, and try to make sure you eliminate the 10. It's a golf course that when you make a mistake, it's really difficult to make up for it."

Michigan Clubfitters spring meeting will teach you about club building

Many of the expensive golf clubs we buy are expensive and are cutting edge. Unfortunately, the clubs are mass produced and quite often have problems from accuracy to not being fitted right to the golfer. Many stores realize this and have people on staff that can do various tests to get this part right. What they do not have the ability is to make sure the clubs are aerodynamic and swing true. This is also the case with putters. For those that would like to build their own clubs or hire a clubmaker from Michigan Club Makers and would like to see if their equipment is right for you, the information is below on their meeting time in Fowlerville on Sunday, May 5th. The guys are pretty nice and for those that would like to see demonstrations and are curious, check it out. The golf afterward is a lot of fun as well.

The Golf Channel has thrown their hat in the ring and they have plenty of competition all over the state of Michigan. This tour has handicap and age groups and golfers are seperated by ability. Their first tournament is at Metamora CC on April,13th and Phyllis Barone of my new venture Michigan Golf Scene has the interview with Shawn Lally.

Dropping it in the slot helps make you have pure impact

Bob Krause is known for his connections and ability to quickly analyze and fix a golf swing. His latest tip concerns dropping it in the slot on the downswing. What does this mean. When you are turning your hips from your back to front hip your hands do not swing in a pendulum but drop straight down before proceeding toward your target.

At impact, the ideal swing will have both hips open up on the downswing and if someone is standing behind yu they should see the left butt cheek at impact. For those of you saying huh!, it goes like this. Your hips rotate from back to front with your butt being parallel to the ball and your club after being dropped straight down coming from the inside to have that pure impact feel at contact. MEN'S GOLF: Oakland's Nick Cunningham named Summit League Golfer of the Week

ELMHURST, Ill. — Oakland's Nick Cunningham earned the Summit League Male Golfer of the Week for finishing in the top-20 at the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate, announced the league office on Wednesday.

Cunningham, a senior, collects his first career league weekly award after he fired a 54-hole score of 221 (71-75-75) to finish in a tie for 16th place at 5-over-par. He had a stroke average of 73.7 and his first round score of 71 was tied for the team-low at the tournament.

The Golden Grizzlies will be in action next on April 6-7 as they travel to Bloomington, Ind., to compete in the NYX Hoosier Invitational at the IU Golf Course.

The above headline is true. But in addition to this, it is about promoting golf to athletes that do not have the money or access to play golf for their high school teams or play junior golf. Not everyone can play golf at the Country Club of Detroit or get free clubs and upgrades. Almost all of the golfers learn the game from instruction, greens fees and get great role models. Guan should be in no hurry

Tianlang Guan is now the low amateur at the Masters. Great accomplishment. Now what's next? The eighth grader has created a great buzz this week by being the low amateur and the youngest player to ever have that distinction. This is great in so many levels.

When Tiger was that age he was probably only dreaming of what Guan did and hoping for an invite to arguably the world's most prestigious tournament. Guan has now been there and done that and if his game improves, perhaps he will try to play the US Amateur later this summer.

What ever he does, he needs to resist burnout. For one, do not play too much golf with Tiger. Other than the golf, Tiger is not much of a role model.

Right now, that is premature. Guan is simply the low amateur. It seems like only yesterday that Tiger was on the prowl. Now he is the hunted. Could Guan or someone like him be that next superstar that transcends golf?

Bob Costas criticizes CBS for failing to call out Augusta National’s ‘history of racism and sexism.

Going on the Dan Patrick radio show, he said the Masters' discrimination policies against minorities and women and the CBS Network ignoring them on the air is something that needs to be addressed.

My thing is Costas is picking a fight and doing it without the stones to do anything that would create leverage. He is hiding behind his NBC badge knowing he doesn't care about golf and never will. NBC is unlikely to get the contract to ever carry this tournament so buddy, keep your mouth shut.
