It is more than a safe bet to assume that great golfing weather is here through October and the Memorial Day weekend is a super way to get in a lot of golf. There are plenty of golfing specials and programs and here are some sent to me and they are excellent.

Oakland Counties Jewel Golf Course

Lyon Oaks is an Arthur Fields design where long carries and accurate shots off the tee will help you maximize your golfing experience. Hills is known for the qualities mentioned above and the most recently completed of the five County courses is by far the toughest and best test of your golfing abilities. I enjoy all of the Oakland County courses. Red, White Lake, Glen and Springfield Oaks are all fine courses as well. They play short, scenic and have some very interesting golf holes. Lyon Oaks plays from its longest tees (the black) at 6,837 yards and has tees from yardage at only 4,525 yards.

Lyon Oaks runs along I-96 in Milford and depending on your playing ability, offers five sets of tees that will make you think about where you want to place the ball. The clubhouse is very beautiful. It holds parties and weddings and they had a nice outdoor tent for a wedding that was taking place as we golfed and with the wildlife also in the background, it was a nice place to test my skills.

Arthur Hills takes good advantage of the terrain in his designs and a tee shot is not just a tee shot at Lyon Oaks. It is a study of golf course management. Take the second hole. It plays only 353 yards from the black tees (the back ones) and looks wide open from the tee box. A pond runs along the left side and a sand trap stares you right in the face. You should figure this into your strategy and even from the black tees it looks like you should carry it easy. It sits around 250 yards from the tee box but with the wind playing in my face, I did not carry it. I landed right smack in the middle of it. This turns the hole into a possible three shot affair to get onto the green depending on your lie and skill. I needed that extra shot to get on the green. The fairway narrows as the hole runs from tee to green. What looks wide open on the tee box narrows as you move to the green like a lane ending on the freeway where you have to merge. The green on this hole is very tough. Really it’s too tough. I have played this course twice and both times I have been bitten by this green. My first fairway iron hit the front left of the green and promptly rolled off the severe sloping green back to within inches of the water. The second time I caught a flyer from the fairway and ended up behind the green and had a downhill chip. I had a nice chip and was happy with my ball strike and then the ball rolled and rolled and thank goodness I had my golf ball retriever as it went into the water.

The Left Side Provides a Good Angle on #4

The fourth hole 432 yards mirrors the second in that it looks to be wide open from the tee box but as you look over the fescues from the tee box you can see that the woods that line both sides of the fairway demand that you work the ball to a space left center, right center or preferably right down the middle. The woods to the right side are marked with an out-of-bounds fence and the trees that are inbounds may leave you a shot but most likely you will have to chip out of the woods. If you go in the woods left side you will be three off the tee. An iron shot in the fairway will most likely be a low to mid iron (pw to 5 iron). This is assuming you hit it over the fescues. Only a single sand bunker guards the green but the green is very undulating and slopes from back to front and has subtle breaks to read and making a par is a good score here.

The fifth hole is also a tough hole with another long carry. While this par five is only 529 yards, more fescues run a good 100 yards in front of the tee box and depending on your starting place, two huge fairway bunkers look to collect errant shots on either side and the woods will collect any shots that stray right or left. I was lucky enough to be in the fairway both times I played this hole and Paul Simpson, the PGA pro said that this hole is one where you should par or birdie or you will lose a shot to the field. I believe longer players can get on in two but this hole has plenty of risk for golfers going for it in two. First off, the fairway slopes downhill and really narrows about 60-70 yards in front of the green. A sand bunker guards the narrow part of the fairway and a wetlands area guards the front part of the green. I hit my tee shot solid but did not crush it. My second shot both times was hit extremely well but went into the wetlands and this penalty stroke lets you know that the second shot is a layup shot if you are not a really long hitter or miss with the driver. The green is once again severely undulated in spots and is very difficult. Making a par here is a worthy effort and birdie is definitely worth stopping the cart girl for your favorite beverage.

The ninth hole is a dandy. It plays at 556 yards from the tips and I played it at 540 as a group behind us caught us and we paired up. It plays as a winding par five and for those not familiar with playing the course, aim at the huge tree about 300-325 yards out on the left side of the fairway. Actually, to the right is even better. If you end up in line of the tree, you will either have to hit a draw from right to left or go over it. The other side of the tree will find both sand and grass moguls and you may have a poor lie. I had to hit over the tree and my second shot was crushed to within 75 yards of the hole. Most golfers will hit a mid to high iron on their third shots after hitting a fairway wood with your second. The ninth green played much slower than the other greens described in this review and with it being in the sun, it surprised me.

Long Carries are Everywhere at Lyon Oaks

If you have noticed a theme of this Arthur Hills course, its hit your driver over fescues, put a big tree in front of your tee shot and have severely undulated greens with tight driving areas. This is not a pitch and putt course. So is the case with number 11. At 440 yards from the black tee box and 422 from the blues where I played it from, a huge Oak Tree sits right in the middle of the fairway after you pass some fescues that go a good 100 plus yards. The fairway and rough to the left side of the tree is narrow but their is a much larger landing area to the right side. It is still tight though and if you can work a draw you will be in good shape. Those that crush their drives can reach the sand bunkers left and right. The woods to the right side of the hole can come into play if you snap hook it. Your second shot will be a mid-iron for the long hitters but will be a high-iron to fairway wood for the short hitters or for those that catch trouble. My second shot faded into the rough that overlooked the right side of the green. My chip was good but caromed off the dog hair and rolled and rolled and rolled. I did hit a flop shot but once again the greens will let your ball keep going. My playing partner said my ball rolled for several seconds after it initially landed as it just kept trickling.

In my mind, there are many memorable holes but the 16th is the one that will really test your abilities. It really is a three shot par five as it plays from 575 from the blacks to 480 from the front set of tees. Fescues guard the tee box in front as do a line of trees down the right side. A ball driven along the tree line without going in will be rewarded as it opens up. The trees that guard the left side will not come into play on your drive unless you severely pull your shot. The best piece of advice you is to drive the ball down the left side. You have a great angle to play your shots as the hole is a long arching dog leg right. Working your ball down the left will bring the woods into play but any decent shot will keep you moving toward the green. Going right is a very poor idea. The hole slopes with many out of bounds areas and will not give you a good angle to the pin and force you to hook the ball right or leave it short of the green in three. This hole is really a spectacular play. Whatever you do, do not go behind the green, it severely slopes to the cart path about 25 feet below the ball and you could have Shaquille O'Neal hold the flag over his head and you would never have an idea on where the flag is.
Putting is once again difficult as the green has many subtle breaks.

The par three 17th hole is a very worthy hole review. At 204 yards from the back and playing at 98 from the very front, you have plenty of options to play the hole from different angles. Whatever the case, watch out. This hole plays much different depending on the location of the flag for the day. It is a two-tiered green and the left side is much higher than the right. Drive it short and a chip is ok and you could still make a par. Drive it to the left side of the green to a flag on the lower tier and a three-putt is likely in order. If your tee shot goes right as mine did, it will go into the wetlands and you cannot play out of there. A bridge where you park your cart and walk to the green will let you know you did a bad, bad thing. You cannot hit your ball on the right side of the cart bridge as it is out-of-bounds. Take your three or four and get out of here. A birdie is a great score here.

Number 18 is a great finishing hole. Do I need to say any more about fescues? Yes you need to negotiate them as you have all day. This hole really tightens up in the landing area. A huge oak tree to the left side is once again your target. Driving to the right side of the tree is your perfect play. I crushed my driver and was behind the tree where I promptly knew that I had to place my second shot using the sand bunkers to the right of the green as my target. This 510 yard hole has plenty of beauty and trouble to make sure you play your best game. Playing at 510 from the black tees to 401 from the green tee box, a sloping sand bunker is in play for those that miss the fairway and if you reach this bunker, this will be a three shot hole for sure. The woods right side of the tee box will be in play for most of the hole. Golfers will also have to deal with wetlands on their second shot. A wetland fence that runs across the fairway will come into play for shorter hitters on their second shots. Hitting it into the wetlands is basically a lost ball. Now comes another twist. Along the left side of the green is a pond and shots that are not executed correctly will earn you a penalty shot. This hole has a bucketful of trouble and can be birdied but par is a great score and well earned. The clubhouse has plenty to drink and golfers can go there and add up their scores.

Course Markings- 6- No markings on the golf course. A yardage book is the best thing or a Sky Caddie is needed when playing. A pamphlet is given to golfers to aid them in yardage. I like the yardage books or Sky Caddie best.

Conditions -8 - Plenty of ropes and large to keep the carts from tearing up the fairways. Golfers need to help them on he greens. A lot of greens had plenty of ball marks where people could use a divot marker to help out the greens keeper. Golfers can also help out by repairing divots. Perhaps some sand containers on the cart would help. The fairways and course did look great.

Playability 7- A very difficult test of golf. Plenty of illusions from the tee box make this course one you need to play several times to begin understand how to manage your game. Driving it over fescues all day does get unnerving. The greens were very inconsistent as some putts were very fast and others were slow.

Course Design-8.0- Hills' uses the natural setting of a golf course to give it unique features. This is easily the toughest course in the Oakland County Parks system. Sometimes a well-struck ball just does not need to be in trouble so much. Golfers do need bailout areas at times and be able to whale away on holes but here you really need to manage your game and sometimes hope for the best.

Pace of Play 8- The starter said 4 1/2 hours but it was just over five.

The bottom line is this course is a 9 out of 10. While some scores were lower than the higher score I gave if you average them out, this is a super place to play. Please take advantage of the driving range and practice facilities if you can. Playing this course without a warmup will add strokes to your game.

Winners and What Happened?

Just Some Observations

Marty Gallaher- Lake Orion Coach Marty did a great job organizing the tournament. He was firm with the players on his expectations and was all over the course to make sure everything stayed fine on his watch. He showed an outstanding touch pairing up the four prep champions on the same tee box and it was fun seeing them enjoy a day that will most likely never happen again. Why? See below.

He Has a lot to Smile About

Brad Kozinski- Novi. I called the Kid ‘Koz’ and perhaps it will be a nickname that sticks as his teammates laughed affectionately with their teammate who always has a smile. Every time I saw him he had a smile on his face and he used his good attitude to turn around his round and shared the biggest tournament victory of his golfing career. ‘Koz’ started on hole 14 in the shotgun start at Pontiac Country Club and wasn’t sure if it would be his day. By number 18 where he made birdie, it was game on and his 73 helped Novi upset more heralded teams and has a medal for himself to remember this day.

Novi- Yes, the other high school located in Novi often plays as the ’little brother’ in high school sports. Detroit Catholic Central has won countless high school golf championships and has an overstuffed trophy case. Make that cases and will undoubtedly win more, but today the Wildcats beat all comers in a big golf tournament. Something must be in the water in Novi as they had a great week in athletics. Their baseball coach Rick Green won his 300th game in baseball, the boys and girls won the KLAA Conference track meets and won the County golf championships. Congrats to Novi... the other high school in Novi.

He's Got Game and Keeps Getting Experience

Brandon Barrows is a freshman at Rochester Adams and this young man already has a golfing resume brighter than most that are graduating from college as Big Ten Players. He finished tied for third at PCC. He has qualified in many Michigan tournaments and is gaining valuable experience. He did not do well at the recent Horton Smith Tournament, but scored well against his peers at a recent AJGA event at Fieldstone. He is getting experience and eventually if he commits even more to improving his game, he will potentially be lights out over the rest of his high school career. Rochester Adams coach Dan Picot seconds that.

Big Four- I called them murderer’s row and for good reason. Max Kollin, (Defending State Division 1 Champion), Griffen Smith (Defending Division 3 Champion), and Aaron Knudson (Defending Division 4 Champion) were all playing together. They also shared the tee box with Zack Preuss of Oakland Christian who was the 2010 State Champion in Division Four. What makes this extra special is these golfers are all from Oakland County. This is rarer than Haley’s Comet as how often does one county crown this many champions at once and have them golf in a tournament with high school eligibility left? I’m sure Elias Sports Bureau couldn’t find this either as I bet this is the one and only time it will happen. What would have happened if Francesco Ruffino, the 2011 Mr. Golf showed up? I do not think it would have been a five some but wonder if…

Ruffino Didn't Play at the County Tournament

Francesco Ruffino- He didn’t golf at the County tournament and it was a real shame. Mr. Golf from 2011 as I understand it has golfed in several events outside of his high school schedule and during the season this is a no-no. I hope this is not the case. I truly enjoy watching him play as he is a natural. Ruffino, team needs him. Francesco, do you need them? I hope to see you in the State Tournament.

Pontiac Country Club- I really enjoy this course. It plays short and strategic and has a magical history about it and players come from all around to test their game in the Syron Memorial and other golf tournaments. Saying that, I was disappointed by the number of places in the fairway that players could receive relief from due to bare spots that were all over. I believe this is temporary and hope the course looks tip top for the Syron Memorial coming up in early July.

It’s been almost 10 years since Novi won its first and only golf state title in school history, but it’s been difficult for Huss to organize a reunion since members of that 2002 team that won the Division 1 state title by one stroke are scattered across the country.

Whether or not he can bring those players back together, it’s likely members of the 2002 team will be getting in touch with the current group of players pretty soon after what they pulled off on Wednesday.

For the first time since that magical year of 2002 that ended in a state title, Novi captured the Oakland County Boys Golf Tournament at Pontiac Country Club, shooting a tournament-best score of 309.

Birmingham Brother Rice was second at 311 while Novi Detroit Catholic Central was third with a 312.

“Some of those guys I’m sure will send some these guys a Facebook note or something,” Huss said. “We call it Novi nation. Like a lot of schools, we still stick together.”

Of course, it’ll be a stiff challenge to duplicate the 2002 team by also winning a state title, but winning the county title can only give a boost to the Wildcats with the most significant tournaments of the season around the corner.

What’s more, Novi outlasted Brother Rice and Catholic Central, two teams it’ll have to beat if it’s to qualify for the state tournament and then do well at should the Wildcats qualify.

“They can beat anybody they play against if they play the way they did today,” Huss said.

Leading the way was junior Brad Kozinski who shot a 73 to share medalist honors with South Lyon junior Gavin Gorris.

Senior Johnny Walker shot a 76, and sophomore Garret Buckley and junior Mike Wenzl each added an 80 to give the Wildcats four scores that no other team could beat.

The scores overall were a bit higher than usual for a county tournament, but that was due to high winds that gave many players some trouble.

“Coming into today, I thought a sub-70 round would win it,” Kozinski said. “But it was playing tricky. The wind was blowing and the greens were tough to putt on. A 73 ended up coming through. It was surprising, but it felt good.”

Gorris shared in Kozinski’s surprise that a 73 was good enough to win medalist.

“I expected some scores to be in the 60’s today with all the good players,” Gorris said. “I didn’t expect 73 to win. I’m pumped about that. It was my best score all year and a great time to do it.”

Five players — Rochester’s Mike Murri, Birmingham Seaholm’s Nick Vick, Stoney Creek’s Spencer Lendzion, Walled Lake Northern’s Ryan Dykstra and Brandon Barrows of Rochester Adams — shot a 75 to tie for third.

Seven players shot a 76 to add to a crowded top of the leaderboard.

In an interesting twist, one foursome featured players that had won individual state titles in all four Divisions over the past two years, those being Max Kollin of North Farmington (79), Griffin Smith of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (82), Aaron Knutson of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (77) and Zach Preuss of Auburn Hills Oakland Christian (78).

Players will now have two more weeks of the regular season before district tournaments will take place around the state. The top-6 teams at districts advance to regional tournaments, where the top-3 teams will qualify for state tournaments in four Divisions that’ll be held on June 15-16.

One Year Anniversary of Seve's Death, Bob Krause and a Future Look at the 2012 Oak. Cty Prep Championships

First, off, let me say Happy Mothers Day to all the ladies out there this upcoming week and everyone reading this, at least call your mom, send flowers, spend some time with her and tell her to read this blog. Its better than flowers. Rim shot please.

The world of golf lost a legend a year ago this weekend with the passing of Seve Ballesteros. Ballesteros was simply a golfing prodigy. After turning pro at the age of 16, he first joined the world stage finishing second at Royal Birkdale in 1979 and won five majors by 1988. In my mind, Ballesteros like Mozart, Jimi Hendriz and dozens more who are prodigies at their crafts. Ballesteros showed his maestro talents and won the Master's twice when no European had ever accomplished that feat before him. For me, what made him unique was his ability to almost never be counted out from winning a hole due to his ability to use his golf clubs as a magician's wand. Where most people see a parking lot, Seve saw the chance to think creatively and hit a golf shot from the asphalt that no one else could believe just happened and that includes those that just saw it. He almost singlehandedly created instant replay in golf as the golf audience went into whiplash from shaking their heads in disbelief from what they just saw, and did this over and over again. Seve was known as a swashbuckler as his inconsistent driver made him a known commodity from all over the golf course from many places that most pros did not often play. Here is a video from CBS News and some stats from his play in his career. It is hard to believe he has passed away but Seve was not really a force as a world class golfer since the early-1990's. His bloom ended in his early thirties and served his sport in several capacities until his death.

Lesson Number Two with Bob Krause.

I met with Bob Krause at his Golf Academy this past Friday and it was a real pleasure to see him after I made a mess of a couple of rounds I played the previous weekend. I played poorly at Brentwood and much better at Sanctuary and know from past experience that one lesson will not take care of my ills on a permanent basis.

After Bob checked my balance and reviewed my swing, he noticed that I was actually taking my swing outside the desired swing plane. We got that straight quickly (you can check because the butt end of the club will point at your belly button or close anyway) and he then checked out the next part of my swing that he felt needed my attention. After my club reached a parallel point to the ground, I cocked my wrist and this created some shoulder turn with my eyes over the ball. I was hitting it much more solidly within a few swings and the ball was exploding off of my seven iron. I know hearing about someone else's golf game is pretty boring so if you are serious at improving your game, you need to give Bob a call. He is awesome! I hope to show you some snippets of my swing. Bob is under contract with some news organizations so after he receives the thumbs up, I will be more than happy to show you the video results. It will make you a believer.

Fieldstone Golf Club in Auburn Hills Crowns Two All-Stars in 36 Hole Event

On Saturday, the golfers were cold at the Age 12-15 AJGA All-Star Open at Fieldstone GC but you wouldn’t know it by the leader’s scores.

On Sunday, there was no excuse.

Saturday saw temperatures that barely broke 40 but with sunny skies and temperatures 20 degrees higher on Sunday, golfers warmed up. On Saturday, 43 of 69 boy junior golfers broke 80 including Tony Kil of Markham Ontario who shot a three under 69 which was good for a two shot lead. Likewise, 14 of 27 girls also shot under 80 and Karen Arimoto of Howey in the Hills, Florida looked to extend her two shot lead.

After a frost warning delayed the start of the final round by an hour, dialed up their games quickly.

Arimoto was Bundled up Saturday but Cut Loose on Sunday

On the girl’s side, with 14 golfers within five shots of Arimoto’s lead, she quickly found a way to extend her lead with three birdies on the front nine with birdies at the par 3- 130 yard second hole. She also birdied the fourth and the 6^th holes and anyone who thought about making a charge found themselves in an early hole.

Not that some girls didn’t try. Alyssa Getty of Leamington, Ontario opened with a front nine score of 38 mixing a birdie (5th) and three bogeys. For her, it was a round of what if. “I played well from tee to green but couldn’t make any putts, said Getty. “If I could have, who knows what would have happened.”

Before rebounding with a 74. Nick Carlson of Hamilton, Michigan likewise couldn’t get his ‘A’ game in sync and faded to a 77. Kitwana Arasu of Farmington, Michigan played in his first AJGA tournament as a seventh grader and took away positives from his (75-78) and tie for 24^th place. Not bad for a student just 13-years-old. Nikolas Senkowski of Rochester Hills, only had to drive a few minutes to the tournament but his 76-86 finish (T-58) will give him some incentive to get ready for next time.

The Michigan contingent of girls didn’t fair well at Fieldstone although there is some hope for the future.

Jennifer Yang of Troy has a strong iron game and while opening with a 91, her second round score of 85 is helping her build for the future. In the end, Arimoto’s 74-71 was good for a wire-to-wire win. This is her second consecutive AJGA victory and she thanked everyone afterwards. “I thank my sponsors, my parents and Fieldstone for hosting the tournament,” said Arimoto

The boys side saw a tournament that wasn’t settled until the last putt of the last hole. Tonytaekkun (Tony) Gil found a way to shoot a 69 on Saturday but with 28 golfers within seven shots of his lead, he had plenty of golfers waiting for a slipup.

Brandon Barrows of Lake Orion carded an opening round of 76 but was in a log jam with 13 players who all shared the same score. He bogeyed the first hole and a few more holes on the front side

Not getting ready for next time is Daniel Martinez of Austin, Texas. He began the second day of the 36 hole tournament in a two way tie for second with Andy Zhang of Reunion, Florida. Martinez is an expert at course management and grinded out five consecutive pars to open his round before earning back to back birdies on the 524 yard sixth hole and then again on the 514 yard 7^th. The only problem was Tony Gil also made his lone birdie, also on the sixth and Austin could only close Gil’s lead to one.

But then it happened.

On the back side, Gil hit his tee shot on the 12^th into a sand bunker and ended up with a bogey. Martinez promptly made par and the match was tied. “I knew that was my opportunity to win the match,” said Martinez. “That was the first time I was tied with him.” Gil still had fight in him. He did put together a birdie on 14 but gave it right back on 15 leaving a dramatic finish.

Both golfers played conservatively on the 16^th tee. This hole is full of trouble and especially for golfers who go for the green on this 294 yard hole. They both played 70 yard wedges into the green but the difference was Martinez’ second shot. He stuck his iron to within two feet and promptly made birdie. Gil made par and tried to catch the winner but it was not to be. This is Martinez first victory on the AJGA circuit and plenty of golf awaits him as Texas has several tours. Fieldstone was very proud of hosting its first AJGA junior event. “The AJGA did a spectacular job of putting together a great tournament with great players,” said Gordon Marmion, PGA Professional and Club Manager for Fieldstone GC.

Great Golfing!

When the golfing God’s give you very cold and teeth chattering conditions, you make birdies anyway. That was the mantra of the boys and girls golfing in the AJGA 12-15 all-star tournament at Fieldstone.

In a field of 96 junior players at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy sponsored all-star event, many of the golfers have gathered from places ranging from Lake Orion to Florida to Colombia (yes that Columbia). Many of the players in this tournament are used to working on their tan lines and putting for eagles whenever possible. While tanning was out, the birdies were there for the leaders.

The weather didn’t affect Andy Zhang from Beijing, China and now residing in the Orlando area. He shot a one under par 71 which is good for a tie for second place. “The weather wasn’t great but I’m used to it. Beijing is a cold weather city but I blocked it out,” said Zhang.

It took him several holes to do just that.

After carding a 40 on the front nine he eagled the 533 yard 10^th hole and nearly eagled two more holes on the back nine and shot a five under par 31. He is tied for second with Daniel Martinez of Austin, Texas who put together a round of 71 with 15 pars, two birdies and a bogey. “I believe to win the tournament on Sunday I need to put together a solid round but a few more birdies will not hurt,” said Martinez.

Gil Shot 3 Under in His Opening Round

One golfer everyone is shooting at is Tonytaekkun Gil of Markham, Ontario. A young man with a name that could confound even those competing at a spelling bee will need no introduction. His round of 69 included five birdies and two bogeys and he carded a score of three under on the par fours.

Bombing the ball off the tee was not a problem as many of the players were hitting the ball 280 or better off the tee. Neither was shot making or scoring. Take Brandon Barrows of Lake Orion who has already earned accolades all over the state and country. On number 13 which is a snaking dogleg left, he drove it over the left side tree line and ended up in the rough about 330 from the tee box. A punch shot and an eight foot birdie gives you an idea of how these juniors hit the golf ball. Despite this, Barrows is in a 16 way tie for 13^th, 7 strokes behind Gil.

Nick Carlson of Hamilton, has the low score among Michigan based players and finds himself in a four way tie for fourth, only five strokes behind Gil..

While it is true you cannot win a tournament on the first day of the event, you can shoot yourself out of it. Twenty-eight golfers are within seven strokes of Gil including seven golfers from the State. Nikolas Senkowski or Rochester Hills, is in the log jammed group at 76.

The girls may not hit it as far but they sure have game.

Arimoto isNot Used to the Cold Weather But is Going for
Her Second Consecutive AJGA WIn

Pre tournament favorite Karen Arimoto of Orlando is the pretournament favorite on the girls side. She did not disappoint as she carded a two over par 74 and leads a tightly packed girls side. Arimoto had two birdies and four bogeys and is 18 holes away from winning her second tournament in a row. She will have to contend with 15 girls who are within seven holes of her first round lead. Landrie Grace of Canton, Ohio is one shot back of Arimoto and finds herself in a two way tie for second with Alyssa Getty of Leamington Ohio. Grace shot an uneven four over par on the front nine but came out on the back nine one under after carding three birdies and two bogeys.

Gordon Marmion was concerned that he would have to find a sponsor for the Tour event but all he had to do was pick up the phone and tell the AJGA he was willing to host the season opener and he was in luck. The Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy already was on board but they needed an elite place to play. The reputation of Fieldstone won them the event. “We are fortunate to host because we host a dozen events each season including several junior events,” said Marmion.

The events include the Michigan Publinx, Top 50 junior Tour, Michigan PGA and played as a Buick Open qualifier for nine years. “Long term, we need a sponsor to come aboard and we are confident one will come through.”

Many tournament golfers have plenty of options to play tournament golf and many play multiple tours and many play all over the US looking for golfing glory. Daniel Jaramillo of Bradenton, Florida is one golfer who has a ton of experience. He is 15 years-old but has played elite golf for four years and has a second place finish last year in medal play.

Due to Weather, Brandon Barrows will not Wear Shorts this Weekend

Still, when it comes to being a golfing prodigy, Brandon Barrows of Lake Orion has medaled all over the country including the Michigan Junior PGA, Michigan Amateur and the Michigan Amateur Qualifier. Most golfers would consider any of these tournaments a real coup but Barrows is only 14-years-old and is a freshman at Rochester Adams.

Barrows loves Fieldstone and likes his chances. “The greens are nice and the fairways are in good condition,” said Barrows.

The girl’s 12-15 age division also golf’s at Fieldstone and while many top players are competing this weekend only three players from Michigan are competing including Jennifer Yang, 15 of Troy. The pre-tournament golfer that is playing very well is Karen Arimoto of Howey-in-the-Hills in Florida. She is coming off of a 2012 Taylor Made-Adidas Junior Classic earlier this month.

Glen Oaks is a Course that is Great for Your Ego and Fun to Play

Glen Oaks is one of five courses in the Oakland County park system and this one was built with the ego in mind. Playing at only 6,051 yards and with a minimal amount of trouble, Glen Oaks is a course where you can pull out your driver and whale away with little reprisal or fine tune your game by playing fairway woods and irons from the tee box on many of the holes. What the course lacks in distance takes no shortcuts with its elegant clubhouse where weddings and parties are opulently carried out in the beautiful stone reception hall.

I played on a cold and very windy weekend and driving to the north holes such as the first played 70-80 yards longer than the scorecard but seemingly didn’t help when the wind was at your back. Due to the lack of length of the course, unless there is a lack of ability or physical strength, men should not be playing the 5,714 men’s tees.

Take the 395 yard par four first.

The wind was a factor in my second shot being short

This par four with a ridge and a slightly off centered and elevated green plays a wide open. The fairways are wide at this Farmington based golf course and with adjacent fairways eight and 18 to either side make this hole one where playing driver is a must unless you need the practice or challenge of using the smaller clubs in your bag. The wind was howling into my face and the ripping of flags hitting the sticks on the adjacent holes was noticeable from the tee box. Usually I warm up before teeing off both stretching and hitting a bucket of balls or practicing my short game but it was just plain too cold. It showed on my tee shot as I hit a high fade that slowly carried my opening drive to the eighth fairway and it seemed that the logo of my ball was staring me in the face as my opening shot was held up in the wind. My second shot was just under 180 yards away and I pulled out my hybrid three iron and the shot was hit solid but not nutted and the wind once again took a club I can hit roughly 190-200 yards and I hit it about 160. Still, they say a bad day on the golf course is better than a great day at work. I had a chip of about 40 yards to the elevated green and thought that a sand wedge was too risky in the wind and I needed to take an eight iron and hit a pitch and run links style to the green and it did the trick rolling about ten feet by the pin and rested on a ridge above the flag. My putt slid by and an opening bogey was carded.

I have not played Glen Oaks in probably twenty years but I remembered it was not only short but there were some good strategy holes.

This is the case with number three. This is another whale away hole and with woods surrounding the fairway on both sides of the fairway. It only plays 299 yards from the tips and this par four is the shortest in the Oakland County Parks system. I started my drive down the middle of the fairway and aimed at the fairway sand trap and the ball was on route but the wind did push it right and with my ball disappearing into the cloud cover in the background I had no idea if I was in the rough to the right side of this dog leg right. To my pleasant surprise my ball was just a few yards from the green and boy did I feel lucky. A chip using my sand wedge was from about 30 feet and rolled a few feet wide but if it was online could have went in. My comebacker did go in and a birdie was earned. Anytime you roll in a birdie, you forget it was from 299 yards and it might as well be a 470 yard par four.

Another hole that plays well for many golfers is the 510 yard par five fifth. It plays as an elongated and arching hole where driving it straight is a good strategy but a fade is much, much better. I aimed for a fairway sand bunker but missing it to the right is a good thing and will cut the hole a good 20-30 yards. The fairway does slightly slope from left to right and a good lie awaits on the fairway and if you like a little grass is good under your ball you can really put some thunder into your second shot as the fairway slopes slightly upward. If you take the big clubs on this hole a pitch and putt awaits but if you miss your drive or second shot a low to mid iron wedge will be your play. The green has some undulation but you can approach it and it is a good bet that a one or two-putt will give you between a birdie-par-bogey. There is very little to penalize you on the fifth unless you fly the green and your ball will sleep in the woods.

My favorite part of Glen Oaks is playing the 6^th, 7^th, and 9^th holes that play over a ridge where a creek runs through a valley. Hitting requires some nerve because driving it into the valley has long un mowed grass and will leave you playing twister with a lie that will make you hit three off the tee. The ninth hole only plays from 157 yards and the wind was circling and with a green that slopes from back to front with sand around the green, landing it on the green is not a sure thing. Hit the green and a par or birdie are a good bet. Hit a tee shot short into the rough stuff could be a sure four and hitting the sand could be tricky because the sand is was wet and a mistake will roll down the sloping green into who knows what. Luckily I hit a right to left draw right at the pin and my birdie attempt from about 10-12’ was measured right. The putt was aimed about a golf ball left of the hole and I rolled it in. What a way to end the front nine. It is the back nine that is a real challenge for me.

This is the Number 9 Green Overlooking the Trouble

The back nine starts out with a 230 yard par three and there are obstacles. Hitting into the teeth of the wind for the 10^th hole is not an easy thing and either is a cluster of trees to the left with a safety fence if you go left. In front of the tee box is a grassy depression that is not hard to carry but is there nonetheless. To the right is a tree line and you have to contend with the sand. If you have to miss, let it be in front of the green where you can chip it if you have a mishit. My mishit was to the left over the safety fence into the first cut and a short chip left me with a 15’ putt and I promptly needed two strokes to record a four. It is clear that the back nine will be tougher than the front.

While 11 plays with the wind at your back (334 yards) and 12 is a 401 yard par four that plays more like 470-480 into the wind.

Number 13 is a 446 yard par five that plays as a three shot hole as mother nature was brutal. The hole is not intimidating. You do have the woods down the left side but you have plenty of room to work the ball. My playing partner that day hit a popup and the wind carried it behind the on course restroom and instead of chipping it back to the fairway, he hit a ricochet off the side of the bathroom and into the pine straw. I didn’t laugh but couldn’t figure why he played such a low percentage shot. I hit two excellent shots and rifled my second shot to about 40 yards in front of the green. On a day with little wind it is a hole that a high iron or fairway wood can get you on in two.

On this day, I felt like I was at St. Andrews on a summers day.

The hole I felt like would be a breeze was a nightmare for me and I’m talking about the 14^th hole.

The Front Right of the 16th Green Severely Slopes

It's Wide Open from the Tee Box but the Green is Tricky

This dandy plays as a 446 yard par four but instead of hitting a solid tee shot with the wind at my back, I open up the club face and play my second shot from the 13^th and clearing the tree line looks easy. It was and it was a fairway wood shot of about 230 playing downwind. The shot was launched and it looked to be on the left side of the fairway with me easily finding the ball. The tree line prevented me from having clear vision and finding the ball went for naught. I never did find the ball and never thought I should hit a provisional. I just took a drop from the tree line (not in the rule book) and promptly hit it in the brush to the right of the elevated green. I thought it might have squirted into the pond and hit a second shot (provisional) and it hit the cart path to the right of the green and rests somewhere in the brush. Isn’t that great about golf? Birdie, then a nine. This hole is the 10^th rated handicap hole on the course and I played it as poorly as it can be played. Whatever you do, hit the fairway and play it correctly. I want to go back and try again that’s for sure. (pictures to follow).

The sixteenth hole is pretty non descript except for the green and is no sure thing and this includes having the wind at your back. My Five hybrid usually goes about 170-180 with a solid stroke and nothing more. The hole (192 yards) is wide open but there is sand all over and rough behind the green. My tee shot was solid and landed pin high about 20’ to the right of the flag. But the ball inexplicably ran and went into the rough about 50’ behind the pin. I hit a solid chip to about 5’ away and promptly missed the putt and I hit a 2’ for a four. This green is wild. It is undulated all over but literally has a depression in the front right that is a wild ride if the flag is placed there and it was for its Sunday placement. I enjoy the challenge of putting these types of greens but it is no fun for your score if you have to hit downhill as my first chip was. (pictures to follow).

The Wind Pushed this Drive about 300 Yards

The 18^th is a great way to end the day. Whether the wind is behind you or not (and it was) the fairway is wide open and the landing goes up a hill with a sand trap to the right side. Perhaps it will capture short drives but who knows why it is there. At 396 yards, the trap is maybe 180 yards from the tee box and only a mishit will find the sand. What is cool is while the landing area for your drives sits on a plateau, the hill quickly runs down hill and will add distance to drives as your ball will feed down the hill. There is sand to the right of the green and some undulation but a pitch and run to medium iron will await you on most days. The wind helped me and I was about 105 to the hole. My drive caught the down slope and rolled to the right side of the fairway and my wedge shot gave me a chance at bird and I settled for par. (more pictures to follow).

Did you notice that most of my good scoring holes went with the 30 mph wind with stronger gusts (from Channel 7 News) behind my back and my poorer ones occurred when I went against it? No whining here. It’s called golf.

Now for the Skinny (I will use * on a 1-5 system)

The course- I give it a four ****

It is short and sweet and the yardage makes it a good scoring course. Heck, it’s a great scoring course when it heats up and the wind dies down. It is very fun and wide open. You will not use most of your high irons here as there are only two par fours where yardage is greater than 400 yards.

Bang for the buck **** This course is reasonably priced at $20-30 for 18 and a cart and you get a round of golf where you do not have to spend your entire day looking for your ball. Because the course is only 6,100 yards from the tips, on busy days you will wait to hit your ball but I did not as the cold and windy weather did not bring out golfers in droves.

Amenities *** Glen Oaks has practice facilities such as a putting green and chipping green but no place to practice your sand game or driving range. The pro shop is small and has the basics such as balls, towels and shirts. The cart paths are painted at 50 yard increments and there are no GPS devices mounted on the carts but many golfers now have SkyCaddie or other devices. There is a frequent playing card that earns you discounts and free rounds of golf.

Conditioning- The course is still in its winter shape and I will not rate it here. Per usual, the courses in the Oakland County system are extremely well maintained and the spring weather has brought out more play than usual. I was told that the warmer days have brought out the golfers in heavy numbers.

Second Hole at Lyon Oaks

The 2012 golf season has just started and plenty of course reviews are coming up. I have been on an Oakland County Parks bender and finished Springfield, White Lake and Red Oaks last year and I will be at Glen and Lyon Oaks this year. Also on the immediate agenda is Fieldstone GC and several more courses are in the works. Many times the courses will give an extra pass or two and usually an easy to win 18 hole and a cart contest pass will follow.

In my mind one of the most overlooked pieces of equipment is one of the least expensive items you can buy and I'm talking about golf grips. There sure are plenty of golf specials available this time of year and for those that are willing to drive a little, you can discover a new course or an old one to play.

Mulberry Hills is located off the back 40 in Oxford, Michigan but this course is worth playing. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012, this course is offering both daily and weekend specials where golfers can play for $20 anytime there are available tee times. The weekend price is for tee times made after 2pm. This course
is plenty of fun to play and is on the cutting edge for online tee times, using phone apps to track the course using GPS. They are also having a contest where you can win free greens fees for the 2012 season.
they also have specials on Groupon and being on their e-mail list will give you information on the club. The course has a friendly clubhouse, new golf carts this season and even a 12v adapter to charge your smart phone. I have never seen that one.

Can you imagine playing a premier golf course for under $20? They are pretty common throughout Oakland County and just over the the Macomb and Livingston County lines. Can you imagine playing an Arnold Palmer Signature Course for $18? The Coyote Preserve is located in Livingston County north of Highland Road (M-59) on US 23 six miles north up the road. This course has arguably the best set of finishing holes in Metro Detroit and number 17 is one of the toughest holes several years running. Tanglewood in Novi also has specials in Golf Now and there are even cheaper ones. The specials below may be different depending on when you check out this blog but where one is sold, a few more may pop up with a similar price.
