How could the Jews ever hope to overthrow the Roman government and restore themselves to a place of prominence if they were going to be a bunch of "peacemakers?" The Romans were not going to just lay down or step aside at the request of a group of peace-making Jews. What the Lord said in this seventh Beatitude made absolutely no sense to those who were looking to overthrow the Romans and to take back by force that which rightfully belonged to them.

Looking at today, things haven’t changed that much. Conflict and turmoil still
exist in our society today, hostility runs rampant around the world, and yet we are called to be "peacemakers." How can we as Christians fulfill our role as "peacemakers" in a world that is growing more and more antagonistic toward us and what we believe? What does it mean to be a peacemaker? This morning we look at the difference between a Peace Keeper and a Peace Maker and examine whether we are truly peace breakers, peace fakers or a peace maker!

Verses to read this week:
Monday - John 14:27: Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

Tuesday - Romans 5:1: Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Wednesday - Hebrews 12:14: Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

Thursday – Philippians 4:6-7: Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Friday – Philippians 4:9: The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Saturday – Romans 12:18: If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.

Blessed Sermon Series -- Mercy Me! Our corrupt, ego-centered, and selfish society often asks only one question; “What’s in it for me?” Jesus wants us to ask “Lord, what is in it for you? How can I meet their needs right where they are in whatever situation they find themselves.” It’s not simply feeling compassion but showing compassion, not only sympathizing but offering a helping hand as well. The true character of mercy is giving-giving compassion, giving help, giving time, giving money, giving of yourself, and giving forgiveness. If you desire to “brightly reflect the glory of the Lord” and become “more and more like Him and reflect His glory even more” you must “never give up” in accepting and showing His mercy towards others.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://oasisyuma.blogspot.com/2010/01/blessed-sermon-series-mercy-me-or-is-it.html' title='Blessed Sermon Series -- Mercy Me! Yet Jesus seems to suggest that not only such a diet exists but is the key to being blessed. Of course He probably wasn’t talking about what we put in our mouth but more the appetite of our hearts. He was using the familiar, strong and normal drives that keep us alive to teach us about our spiritual appetites. But the menu was definitely different. Please use the following questions or incomplete sentences to help deepen your understanding of today’s sermon.

1. Whenever I hear the word “righteousness” I always…

2. It appears one might have the appetites for something other than righteous, like…

3. Perhaps my inability to really enjoy being a Christian is because I am waiting to be blessed rather than…

4. Seeing that righteousness might be as essential as food I’m going to…

Ponderable:

“No man should desire to be happy who is not at the same time holy. He should spend his efforts in seeking to know and do the will of God, leaving to Christ the matter of how happy he should be.”

Blessed Sermon Series -- Me? It prohibits an attitude not just a behavior. It may be at the core of the other nine commandments. It definitely addresses a daily reality in most of our lives and the lives of almost everyone around us: simply not content with the where, what and who of our lives.

Please use the following questions to help you better understand God’s Word we hear today.

1. Do you have a reputation as a liar, or do people know what you say is true? Is your word as good as your signature? Do you do what you say you will do? Do you tell the truth even when it will cost you something?

When you take an oath before giving a testimony in a court of law you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Mark Twain said the are 869 different kinds of lies.

I’m not overly sure how many there are; but here are a few that I came up with this week: Bold face lie, White lie, Flattery, Slander, Gossip, Excuses, Propaganda, Spin, Exaggeration, Half truth, Hypocrisy, Saving face, Falsehoods, Shading the truth, Perjury, Misrepresentation, False advertising, Embellishment, and my all time favorite “Ministerally speaking”.

So does it really matter? What’s the harm with a little white lie or a tiny exaggeration? Is honesty all that important? What if being truthful hurts another person’s feelings? So many questions to consider...This morning I ask you to consider this...When we are dishonest, we bring dishonor to Christ and His church. Honesty is important! Truth really does matter in all our relationships! Because 1st of all HONEST HONORS CHRIST, being TRUTHFUL brings HONOR and INTEGRITY to the name of JESUS.

“He whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble.”
Proverbs 17:20

Listen Now.

Ten: #8...Stop Thief!

Maybe you say Whew, I’ve never broken this commandment. Well I want you to think on the wisdom and insight of Dr James Merritt.

“If you have broken any of the prior seven commandments, you’ve automatically broken the eighth commandment. Now, obviously, I am joking with church people on a Sunday morning. But what about the rest of our culture? What about the rest of the world? Is porn not a favorite topic of interest at the office, in the lockeroom, or in the classroom? Does it not fill up your inbox and junk mail at lightening speed? Porn has a grip on our nation and our world and is tearing apart families left and right. A recent survey shows that porn plays a role in 78% of the divorces filed in the U.S. America’s churches are not exempt from the problem of porn. Surveys show that more than 50% of Christian homes say that pornography is a current issue they are dealing with. The church must do something. Our goal this morning is to bring into the light the things that happen in darkness. Our prayer is that if you or a family member has a problem with pornography, you will get help today. Through Christ, freedom is possible.

Listen Now.

The Battle: Exodus 20:14

Today we continue the talks on the 7th Commandment. This morning we look at the battle before us…We live in an age of loose morals. An age when multitudes are yielding to sexual sin, and many have given themselves over to unbridled lust and
passion. Immorality has become so acceptable that we have lost our ability to blush. Nothing shocks us anymore, sex is used for entertainment, recreation, humor, pleasure, and even for securing business. We are so exposed to sexuality that we have been desensitized and hardened to its inappropriateness.

So do we give up? Say the temptation is too strong? Quit and give in? I don’t think so… Matter of fact I believe in the opposite I believe it is time to go on the offensive with God’s Word being our battle plan. This morning we continue to look at the battle for our minds… My hope and prayer is that with God’s help this battle can be won… I know He is faithful! Listen Now.

TEN: #7...An Affair?

In 1999, Cameron Barnes’ published a book called, “Affair, How to Manage Every Aspect of Your Extramarital Relationship with Passion and Dignity.” The publisher described it as a “thoughtful, detailed discussion of every aspect of considering, preparing for, beginning, and conducting a successful and emotionally fulfilling extramarital affair.” This book is a proclaimed self help book on conducting an affair. Oh how I wish that was the only book on the subject, but unfortunately I would be grossly misspoken- I know what’s new?

Hear me…there is no such thing! Not in God’s eyes nor in the written Word. His commandment stands guard over the sanctity and chastity of marriage, and even the reservation of our society. Violation of this command results in broken homes, wrecked lives, disease and death.

The sexual revolution of the 60’s has only snowballed since, and our senses are dulled down so we don’t recognize it so much. It’s an all out assault on the 7th commandment. It is scorned, ridiculed, and belittled. It’s considered outdated and archaic…so old fashioned. We hear so much about “consenting adults” that if we’re not careful we will begin to consent to it and accept. The church no longer speaks out against it like we should. We should all be taking a stand. “I stand alone on the Word of God”.

Matthew 5:27-30 Looking Upon and Lusting
1 Peter 2:11 Abstain from Fleshly Lusts
Hebrews 13:4 The Marriage Bed Respected
1 Thessalonians 4:3 Abstain from Fornication (Pre-Marital Sex)
Psalm 51:4 I Have Sinned Against God
Job 31:1 A Covenant with My Eyes
Psalm 119:9-11 How Can a Man Remain Pure?
Proverbs 5 A Warning to Flee

Listen Now.

TEN: #6...Me, A Murderer?

For many of you here today, I can already hear you saying…”Okay, this one is easy. We have finished 42 different adventures... Some Hopefully by now we have calmed some of our fears. My point in reading this book was first for us to see and realize these type of Adventures are not just for the "experts" like Strobel and Mittelberg. They happen around and to us on a daily basis. Everywhere you turn, everywhere you go God has an adventure waiting.

The second reason much like the first I pray that it (the book through the Holy Spirit) would spark an interest in us getting involved. For some I know it has... Continue with that zeal! For others continue to process what has been read, pray about it, match it up with what scripture says, if you feel you need more formal training let me know and maybe we can work through the book Becoming a Contagious Christian together. I've got the time do you?

Lastly, I would love to know what you think about us reading another book together. For me it was great! Give me your thoughts. Will I accept being part of HIS (JESUS) Expected Adventure? My fears and questions aside will I take a risk? Will I be obedient in my walk with Christ and share with those around me?

Is it worth it? Oh yes!!! Maybe you have been blessed to be in the room/car/airplane/office/softball field/restaurant when someone has given their life to Jesus Christ! The overwhelming feeling that come across you as you watch the transforming power of the Holy Spirit invade a life that was once lost but now has been claimed by God Himself. For me there is nothing like that moment! When someone surrenders their life and is willing to give God control. Oh yes, it is worth it! Look for an Adventure today I promise you wont have to look far! Many of us had several people in the process. For me it would be my Aunt Dar who "made" me go to church in the early years. It would be a 6th grade girl and her mom (The Johnsons) who took me to church every Sunday in Medford, OR. It would be high school drama teacher who was Morman who invited me to search the scriptures for the truth. It would be my dad dying when I was 18 flying home for his funeral having a very real encounter with Jesus on the plane. It would be Jeery and Debbie mentoring me for many years... And countless others!

I wonder just for a second if those in my life ever stopped to realize the IMPACT they made in my life and God's Kingdom (Remember to let your boasting be in Christ) for just simply sharing the Gospel with me. I'm certainly no Billy Graham, I am certainly just a sinner saved by grace. Wonder the next time I get to share with someone what the impact will be for them and God's Kingdom. I dont know but I'm willing to make a few ripples to find out. Have a great day! They share in some conversations and bounce things off of each other. But what is intriguing to me, is at one point Stroebel had to throw it all on the line and just simply ask would you like to pray with me. At that moment he risked everything with that relationship and took the chance.

For a lot of us we still struggle with the "what if they are offended" or "what if I turn them off" and "what if they don't want to be my friend anymore." Lets look at each of those briefly.

"What if they are offended" - Jesus said, some will be offended but they will be offended with HIS message. We are to be obedient and just GO! Their offence will be towards the message of Christ - When it comes down to it, would you rather have offended a person or been disobedient to God. My answer is neither... But if I have to make a choice Hmmmmmmm!

"What if I turn them off" - Again God's word says HE draws people to HIMSELF not us! I think the better question is what if I am used to turn them on!

Lastly, "What if they don't want to be my friend anymore" - I'm just gonna be blunt here... What kinda friend are you that you would not share the single most important thing in your life? Enough said! Praying you take just one more shot today! I encourage you to read verses 1-9 and allow God to speak to you about HIS heart!

With that said... Recently I have been dealing with the unexpected death of 2 of my soccer kids parents. Last night during small group the older sister (Played for me 3yrs ago) called and we talked for a few minutes and today I will get to see her and her brother who plays for me currently. Emotions are very high as you can imagine! Neither one can believe what has happened!

I don't wanna be morbid or take advantage of a terrible circumstance but I need to say this: "Life is SHORT!" Even if you live to be 100 life is SHORT! When death happens and for those of you on Facebook I just found out I will be 82 and die of alcohol poisoning (HMMMM few things wrong with that one) we WILL all stand before Jesus and HE WILL turn to a book and look for our/your name!
