The Benefits of Adoption

Here are the passages and notes I shared with the family of OasisHD on Sunday night at our Hot august nights picnic. May our Heavenly Father use them for his glory!

I. Benefits in how we relate to God
1. We can speak and relate to God as a loving father
Galatians 4:6-7
6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. ESV

Matthew 6:9
9 Pray then like this: ” Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.ESV
2. God loves us and understands us as a father does his children

1 John 3:1
3 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. ESV

Psalms 103:13-14
13 As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. 14 For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. ESV

3. God takes care of our needs
Matthew 6:32
32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. ESV

4. God gives us many good gifts

Matthew 7:11
11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! ESV

5. God gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit
Luke 11:13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” ESV
6. God gives us an inhertience in Heaven

1 Peter 1:3-4
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, ESV

7. God forgives us our sins (prayer)

Matthew 6:9-12
9 Pray then like this: ” Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.10 Your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread,12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ESV

8. We are led by the Holy Spirit (What would dad do?)

Romans 8:14
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. ESV

9. God takes care to discipline us (for our Good)

Hebrews 12:5-11
5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?
“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
nor be weary when reproved by him.
6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and chastises every son whom he receives.”
7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

10. As children we have the privelage to share in the suffering of Christ and his glory

Romans 8:17
17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. ESV
II. Benefit of how we relate to one another
1. We are become members of one family (Brothers and Sisters)

James 1:2
Testing of Your Faith
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, ESV

Matthew 12:50
50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
ESV

2. Nature of the church is deeper and more intimate
1 Timothy 5:1-2
Instructions for the Church
5 Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father. Treat younger men like brothers, 2 older women like mothers, younger women like sisters, in all purity. ESV

3. Changes the dynamic of the work of the church (family business)

John 13:35
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
ESV

4. We have the task and honor of imitating our Heavenly father

Ephesians 5:1
Walk in Love
5 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. ESV

1 Peter 1:14-16
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” ESV

III. Our response to the loving act of adoption

1. Live as children of our heavenly father
1 John 3:10
10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. ESV
