1968 Yamaha YAS1C Twin 125cc

The old seat was totally rusted out. The foam and cover had been eaten by a mouse or rat. This is the old seat pan from a 1974 Yamaha DT100. I hacked the mounts off the old seat and welded them on to the "new" seat pan.

Won't win any awards, but it's better than what it was before. Probably going to rivet the vinyl in the corners.

Here it is with the side trim and Clubman bars.

This is how you know it's barn fresh.

New sealed battery, EBC brake shoes (thanks Benji!), Michelin Gazelle tires, tubes, and replaced some broken spokes. Oil pump has been bypassed, and seized steering dampener removed. No permanent modifications have been made.

Classic Honda.

Classic Honda electrical problems: coil looks melty. Tested out though...gotta keep an eye on that.

Valves are gapped properly & getting oil but still makes a racket.

Closer inspection reveals scorch marks on the cams and some pitting (visible in lower left). When I asked the owner he said it had overheated at one point where "smoke was pouring off of it." I recommended that he replace the camshaft & bearings.

Carbs were good and gunky.

She rips now!

Ignition switch needs some wires & connectors replaced, and the battery was totally dry & must be replaced. A traditional lead-acid battery like the original is about $35. Depending on atmospheric conditions, they lose electrolyte through the breather tube and distilled water and acid must be added. If the fluid level or the charge drop too low, the battery is ruined. I highly recommend using a sealed battery, even though they are around $75, they last a lot longer because they don't evaporate electrolyte, hold a charge better, and often are warranted for a couple of years. When the ignition switch was bypassed and a spare battery used, I could hear the ignition solenoid go "click," which means it's working. It fired up and ran on one cylinder. Could be a new battery is all it needs for the electric starter to work, although I noticed the turn signals didn't work, and a couple of loose wires. I'd be surprised if there weren't a few other shorts. Condensers could need replacing as well, but those are cheap. Did the bike run better cold and then do worse as it warmed up? The petcock had some rusty sludge in it and wasn't draining well. I took it apart and blew some compressed air through it and it works fine now. The screen for the reserve is missing and should be fixed sooner than later, or else sediment will pile up in there again. The #2 carb seems to not be getting gas, although the float seems to be functioning.

One of the spark plugs was a extended reach plug, which caused the electrode tip come into contact with the piston head. Fortunately, this simply bent the tip of the electrode. After carb and wiring rebuild & setting all tolerances to spec, the bike fired up. It ran on both cylinders, but one kept losing spark. This was narrowed down to a short in the spark plug cable. I replaced the ignition coil and broken tail light with parts from a CB750. The battery was replaced with a sealed unit, a Power Source WP9-BS. Pulls great at 6-7k (Red line @ 10.5k!) with a wonderful throaty exhaust note - brash but not obnoxious. Suprisingly gentle clutch. Bike is beat but has a lot of life left to it and even more character.

00137 Honda 1980 C70 Passport / Cub

Phil's got my old Aermacchi, but I'm currently tuning his Honda Passport C70. Aka the Cub, it is the most common motorbike on the planet. This one was not idling at low revs, despite having the carb cleaned. On inspection, the bamboo points armature that is actuated by the cam on the flywheel had worn down to such a degree as to not open the points. This was resolved by simply adjusting the points. The oil centrifuge was de-sludged, and the gaskets replaced. Battery, though it holds a charge, probably doesn't have much life left to it. I'd have liked to take a look at the tappets, but the damn covers are seized to point where removing them would destroy the covers and possibly the threads on the head, so that's just not gonna happen.

Sludge...wish I could get my guitar to sound like that looks.

Points aren't moving. That there's your problem.

Melted and corroded and generally non-conductive around the ignition and the electric starter circuits.

Montgomery Wards Riverside / Benelli Cobra / Leoncino 125

This 100% complete bike is was sold in the USA in 1969 as a Montgomery Wards Riverside 125. It was also imported under the name "Benelli Cobra" and sold in it's native Italy as the "Benelli Leoncino." It is a 4 -speed right hand shift, 1 up, 3 down. This bike was laid up properly with lots of oil and so the internals are in good shape. The motor is a piston ported 2-stroke - no case induction or reed valve here. 125 cc. The motor turns over and shifts smoothly. The cylinder, piston, rings, crank and con rod have been inspected and are in excellent shape. 6V 60 watt electrics. Coils check for continuity. New points included. Carb is in excellent working order. 2 petcocks, both functioning and included. Gas tank electrolytically cleaned and sealed with Red Kote. Pictured with an old Yamaha seat pan. Original seat included.
