Obama's speech to the UCC meeting has been getting a little blog play about the hijacking of religion, but I think they are missing the part of the speech that will really appeal to Christian Conservatives. The emphasis is mine...

And it's around this time that some pastors I was working with came up to me and asked if I was a member of a church. "If you're organizing churches," they said, "it might be helpful if you went to church once in a while." And I thought, "Well, I guess that makes sense."

So one Sunday, I put on one of the few clean jackets I had, and went over to Trinity United Church of Christ on 95th Street on the South Side of Chicago. And I heard Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright deliver a sermon called "The Audacity of Hope." And during the course of that sermon, he introduced me to someone named Jesus Christ. I learned that my sins could be redeemed. I learned that those things I was too weak to accomplish myself, He would accomplish with me if I placed my trust in Him. And in time, I came to see faith as more than just a comfort to the weary or a hedge against death, but rather as an active, palpable agent in the world and in my own life.

It was because of these newfound understandings that I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity one day and affirm my Christian faith. It came about as a choice, and not an epiphany. I didn't fall out in church, as folks sometimes do. The questions I had didn't magically disappear. The skeptical bent of my mind didn't suddenly vanish. But kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side, I felt I heard God's spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth and carrying out His works.

But my journey is part of a larger journey - one shared by all who've ever sought to apply the values of their faith to our society.

That gang, is a statement of faith and an testimony. A man talking about answering what is basically an alter call and explaining what that meant to him. Mark my words, him explaining that directly to a camera will be one of his most effective TV ads in the south down the streatch. It will eliminate all the fog others will attempt to create with conservative Christians about him due to his stand on some issues, conservative Christians will see a honest, open story about his journey to faith and how that journey has influenced his views and it will hit home with these voters....

And all the Ann Coulters of the world talking illogical smack HT (SCAM) will do nothing but tick off the very people she is trying to influence. Trust me you don't want to mock a man's faith and that was this sort of thing will come across as mocking religion in general. You will create a group of 'Obama Christian' voters that will rival the 'Regan Democrats'

The LA Times is raising the question of if Sen. Obama took too much credit in his story of helping out the residents of Altgeld Gardens.

It is a memoir folks, so it is told from a viewpoint of a single person. I think this isn't going to amount to much. Then again it is a taste of what is to come when people start taking 'Dream's of My Father' apart word by word.

Some Details on the Springfield Anouncement

Rich over at CapFax has some details.

Gates open at open at Sixth and Adams streets at 9 a.m., and that the Obama campaign has said the program will begin about 10 a.m. They recommend you car-pool having spent some time in downtown Springfield I would second that (I suspect there are going be huge crowds).

If we didn't have stuff going on OneMan would make the trip just for the experience. If you go, have fun it should be interesting.

No theme music for the Senator

MSNBC (and others) listed the music the candidates used to enter and leave from their speeches at the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting. The only candidate that did not use music was Senator Obama.

So is this a good move? By waiting a bit he might get a better idea of what would make a good tune and what the others are going to use, then again some of the tunes are 'taken' by now.

Sneed (Chicago area gosip columnist) had this bit about Sen. Obama

Cap flap: In case you didn't notice, Sen. Barack Obama was wearing a White Sox cap at the Bears game Sunday. The Sox are the favorite team of Mayor Daley, whom Obama endorsed for re-election the following day. It's called covering all bases.

Or Mike it's called he lives on the south side so therefore logically would be a Sox fan (like any sane person).
