In How to Blow Yourself Up, WK Interact twists and inverts the fatalism of end-of-the-world prophecies, turning destruction into a matter of free will. “If you believe the world will end in 2012 and you can’t do anything about it, maybe it’s better to blow yourself up when you feel like it,” says WK. To that end, he has turned objects of control and personal movement – skateboards and bicycles, as well as three-dimensional panels – into instruments of self-destruction, equipped with what appear to be pipe bombs and other menacing apparatuses.

In character with his oeuvre, WK captures the nonstop motion – both physical and psychic – of urbanism. In the past, he has used that kinetic graphic style to convey explosiveness, but in How to Blow Yourself Up he creates installations that burst with dimension and color. The glowing shades in his palette, however, are clearly not intended to brighten or beautify but to alert and alarm, grabbing attention the way a safety hazard sign would.

As always, WK’s work has a tactile quality, in keeping with his name. While the interactivity of his street art stems from its incorporation into its surroundings, his gallery pieces stretch toward the viewer as if to say “I’ll reach out and touch you if you reach out and touch me.” The scale of his fine art pieces also contributes to their intimacy. On the streets, his images stretch towards infinity with only sky above; indoors, there are ceilings and corners and other confines to navigate, forcing him to work smaller. Says WK, “The more I reduce it, the more it becomes like a toy, something people will want to grab and move around.”

If How to Blow Yourself Up seems like a sharp divergence from WK’s street art, it is because the artist places so much emphasis on vesting context into his work. When he uses a patch of city as his medium, he first spends time investigating the location and contemplating its dynamic before assimilating his work into it. By contrast, when he is given blank gallery walls to work with, the combined effect of his pieces is akin to a cocoon – a self-contained environment.

“Artists appropriate their surroundings,” says WK, who was born in France but has lived in New York for over 15 years. “Van Gogh had the peasants who lived in his village and the flowers in the garden outside the mental hospital where he stayed. For me, it’s New York and everything about it that surrounds me – the nonstop energy, the movement, the grit, the noise. People love to put stories on top of art, to make it about something grand, but it’s very simple. It’s about an artist and a place.”

PABLOVE ACROSS AMERICA

Pablove Across America, the coast-to-coast cycling journey of hope and education spearheaded by Dangerbird Records co-founder Jeff Castelaz, will conclude in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 21, with a benefit concert at Avalon in Hollywood. The night will be a celebration of Castelaz’s incredible triumph, and devoted to the Pablove Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to children life programs as well as children’s cancer research and treatment. A bevy of supporters will join to perform acoustic and semi-acoustic sets including, Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Shirley Manson, Butch Walker, Tom Gabel (Against Me!), Jarrod Gorbel (the Honorary Title) and Charlotte Martin, with others to be announced shortly. Tickets are $35 (GA) and $65 (VIP) and will go on sale this Saturday, October 31. All proceeds will go to the Foundation.

Castelaz’s pilgrimage is deeply rooted: he’s riding in honor and remembrance of his 6-year old son, Pablo Thrailkill Castelaz, whose individual fight with cancer ended June 27, 2009 after a 13-month battle. Castelaz embarked on his bike expedition on October 10 in St. Augustine, Fla., with a mission to create awareness and raise funds to improve the treatment experience for children with cancer. He will complete his trek at Pablo’s gravesite at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills Memorial Park in time for the concert, having logged more than 3100 miles.

The Pablove Foundation was founded by Castelaz and his wife Jo Ann Thrailkill at the onset of their son’s diagnosis. Pablove Across America is Castelaz’s physical show of commitment to fighting cancer. His message is urgent: kids get cancer too. Families need help and hope – not only to find a cure, but to increase joy and compassion during the day-to-day grind of treatment.

“Pablove Across America “is about standing up, hammering the pedals, speaking out – and FIGHTING back,” proclaims Castelaz. “We want people to support and spread our message that kids get cancer too. It’s not somebody else’s problem. As the Pablove Foundation community grows, we can make a sizable difference in peoples’ lives.”

Shepard x L.E.A.D. Uganda

Stephen Shames, and his art dealer, Steven Kasher, approached Shepard Fairey earlier this year about creating artworks to support L.E.A.D. Uganda, an educational leadership program founded by Shames that locates vulnerable children with innate talents and molds them into leaders.

Fairey agreed to create and donate two unique mixed media collages, valued at $12,000 each, and two editions of 450 prints, which sell for $75 each. The collages and prints will be auctioned off on November 12 at the Steven Kasher Gallery, 521 West 23rd Street, New York, along with works by other noted photographers, among them Joyce Tenneson, Dan Winters, Michal Chelbin, and Lynn Bianchi. The Fairey prints are based on Uganda photographs by Stephen Shames. Fairey had previously created a suite of works based on Shames’ iconic portrait of Angela Davis, which is in the National Portrait Gallery. L.E.A.D Uganda, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, locates children living on the edges of society – AIDS orphans, former child soldiers, child laborers – and gives them the world class, 21st century skills necessary to lead Africa into the future. The goal is to help Africans become equal partners in a world of democracy and prosperity. All proceeds from the event will go towards the education L.E.A.D Uganda’s students.

This event is open to the public and admission is free. Stephen Magezi, Deputy Director of L.E.A.D Uganda in Kampala, Uganda will speak briefly about L.E.A.D Uganda. There will be music by saxophonist Hayes Greenfield. Steve Shames will sign copies of his new book Transforming Lives: Turning Uganda’s Forgotten Children Into Leader (Star Bright Books). The book tells the inspirational stories of thirteen children in the program.

OBEY X LEVI’S® X TIMES SQUARE

The OBEY X LEVI’S® Project – 10/29 – Times Square Live Installation Event and Collaboration Release! The launch of the Obey x Levi’s® collection is the latest result of the ongoing collaborative relationship between Levi’s® and Fairey relationship.

I’ve always felt that keeping my art bold, simple and refined was a way to cut through the clutter, and it’s a formula that Levi’s® has been using for decades that keeps them accessible and populist yet stylish and relevant. The posters I created for Levi’s® are returns to the roots of my style: one side with an industrial propaganda poster feel that connects with the heritage of Levi’s® as a brand for workers, and the reverse side reflecting my other biggest influence, punk rock, and the connection of Levi’s® to punk and rock in general. – Shepard

OBEY X LEVI’S scaffolding went up in Times Sq this week –Traffic stopped at the huge plywood signage was hoisted on to the steel frames, as groups of fans gathered to capture the moment. On 10/29, Shepard will create a live art installation on the outside façade of this scaffolding in front of the Levi’s store in Times Square at 7pm. Poster signing will follow the installation. A video of the process will be posted to YOU TUBE shortly after the install.

Inspired by the Levi’s GO FORTH campaign shot by Ryan McGinley, and the words of poet Walt Whitman, Shepard’s version of the American Pioneer will debut at this event and he will sign this new graphic-immediately after the live installation. The PIONEER graphic is featured on the reverse side of four stand-alone images that combine to showcase the new image.

The OBEY X LEVI’S line is extremely limited and consists of 8 pieces that showcase with details selected by Fairey and inspired by his personal collection of Levi’s® denim. The collection even has an “Obey” Giant red tab- next to the Levi’s Tab. Each piece of the Obey x Levi’s® collection, jeans, denim jacket and flannel shirt comes with a specially designed, co-branded bandana with the OBEY MANIFESTO.
