Long time friend and man of iconic style, Jason Jessee invited us in to his realm to work together on a collection that we are proud to introduce for Spring 2010. The common thread that ties Jason and OBEY together is the underlying drive to do it yourself. Seeing Jason’s surroundings opened up an understanding of his ability to take everything from found objects to blank pieces of paper and somehow make them intriguing and unique. Jason pulls from a wealth of knowledge from times past where you hand made objects. Seeing hand tooled leather, metal sculptures and giant wood slabs sitting right along side skateboards, bikes and guns offers a look in to how Jason weaves the past and present together. The OBEY 4 Jason Jessee collection is a hand picked assortment based on some key pieces that have become synonymous with his style as well as an illustration by Shepard and some moments in time captured while visiting him in Watsonville.

Jason Jessee prints will be available on 2/9/10 on OBEYCLOTHING.com. Edition of 200, Numbered and Signed by both Jessee and Shepard.

New Works by Andres Guerrero and Albert Reyes, opening February 6th at Subliminal Projects, features a pair of artists and longtime friends whose contrasting bodies of work show both ends of the contemplation spectrum. On the introspective side lies Guerrero, who describes his skull imagery as “symbolic self-portrait representation… a descriptive means of living through death.” Reyes, on the other hand, blends his own experience into the contextual spheres of pop culture, politics, religion and life in L.A. “My view of the world is from L.A.,” says Reyes. “My view is through the L.A. media, taking in the culture, the people, the vastness of L.A. No one can escape the Hollywood impact.”

Stylistically, the two artists are equally divergent. Reyes’ works often consist of pencil and pen line drawings, rendered on the backsides of book covers, wood panels and the occasional found object. While they vary in detail from folk-like simplicity to photorealism, they always seem to carry a quality of surreal wisdom, with subject matter that is both stranger than fiction and funny because it’s true. Guerrero, conversely, paints rich layers and webs that express the fluid impermanence of life and the duality of confusion and comfort in his emotional struggles with personal loss, connection and reconnection. Together they combine to express life’s tension in its many forms – personal, cultural, spiritual – rendered meticulously and fluently.

Art Exhibition During Oscar Week in Los Angeles, CA.

MANIFESTEQUALITY (www.manifestequality.com) unites art, activism and the message of universal equal rights into a memorable multi-media ‘moment’, from Wednesday, March 3 – Sunday, March 7, 2010. Through Suffrage, the Equal Rights Amendment, the Prop 8 shockwaves, the legal battle for equal rights has been fought at different times, on differing fronts, for varied communities. In response to the growing resistance to equal rights for the LGBT population, the creative community is gathering, during Oscar Week to bring inspiration through the creation of original artworks, performances and special installations that raise visibility for the grass roots efforts to ensure full Equal Rights to LGBT Americans.

Leading up to the March events, MANIFESTEQUALITY will sponsor a nationwide online art contest focusing on the themes of Equality, Justice, Respect, Unity, Civil Rights and Love. Submissions will be reviewed by a blue-ribbon panel of judges, including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Annie Philbin (Hammer Museum), Shepard Fairey (Artist), Ed Ruscha (Artist), Lari Pittman (Artist), Lisa Love (Senior WC Editor, Vogue), Franklin Sirmans (Curator Contemporary Art, LACMA) Edgar Arceneaux (Director, Watts House Project), Rick Jacobs (Founder, Courage Campaign), David Pagel (Art Critic). Five winning artists will have their work hang with the nationally recognized artists at the MANIFESTEQUALITYGallery space, and ten second prize winners will be selected to join the online exhibition. Submissions will be accepted through February 19, 2010. The MANIFESTEQUALITY Gallery issues a call-to-action, with artists motivating public energy toward true reform on a local, state and national level. Artists, grass roots activists, performers, celebrity guests, art collectors, musicians, public officials and the general public will display their works and show support at the MANIFESTEQUALITYGallery in Hollywood, CA. just blocks from the Kodak Theater where the Academy Awards will be held. The MANIFESTEQUALITY Gallery invites artists from across the nation to use their voices and talents to amplify and motivate the grass roots movement who fight for full & unrestricted equal rights for all Americans. Participating artists include: Barry McGee, Swoon, Harvey Pekar, Karen Kimmel, Ron English, Tierney Gearon, Shepard Fairey, Clare Rojas, Robbie Conal, Roman Coppola, Friends With You and hundreds more.

MANIFESTEQUALITY will serve as a touchstone event for an enduring campaign – a convergence of altruistic intention, artistic expression, community engagement and political momentum.

We’re very sad to report that Howard Zinn, the brilliant civil rights activist and political scientist, passed away yesterday at age 87. Zinn is best known for his book “A People’s History of the United States,” which told the story of the country through the eyes of the disenfranchised: women, minorities and the working class. The book was released in 1980, when most of America was suffering from Reagan fever, and has since served as strong historical evidence against the notion that big business and its political allies want to let their prosperity “trickle down” to the masses. It has sold over a million copies to date. If you’ve never read it, we highly recommend checking it out.

Last year, our team at Studio Number One had the opportunity to do some work on Zinn’s History Channel television special, “The People Speak.” Some of us even got to meet him – one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences. We wish the best for his loved ones, and we take comfort ourselves in the belief that his ideas will live on forever.

A message from Antonino D’Ambrosio:
The passing of Howard Zinn makes this a sad for myself and everyone at La Lutta. As some of you know, I came to work and become friends with Zinn over the past few years. We had planned to do a few publics together around my new book and film in the spring and fall 2010. I’ve contributed a tribute to him, “Howard Zinn: Historian of the Human Spirit,” published by The Progressive. You can read here: http://www.progressive.org/
