Endura alarm clock | West Germany

Here is a clock that stands in stark contrast to its contemporary peers. Contrary to sleek, contoured, “space age” design, this clock is sharp and angular yet maintains a distinctly modern feel. It incorporates only the numerals 12, 4, and 8 on its face. The clock stands almost 6” tall and more than 4” wide at the widest point. It is orange and white in color.

Trifoglio vase | Enzo Mari | Danese, Italy | 1969

Here is a pair of vases from the Trifoglio series by Enzo Mari for Danese. Trifoglio is Italian for Shamrock or Clover. The material from which these vases are produced is the same as the Bambu vase and the Tortiglione vase and there are clear similarities in their design.

The larger vase (on the left) is 10-3/4” high and 4-3/4” in diameter. The smaller vase (on the right) is 7-1/4” high and 4-3/4” in diameter. Both have a metal disc on the base indicating “Enzo Mari Danese Milano 1969 Made in Italy”.

There were 6 bidders who placed 11 bids for this pair of Trifoglio vases. The vases sold for $415.00 on 4/29/2012 from West Palm Beach, Florida, United States.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, abbreviated ABS, has the chemical formula (C₈H₈)_x· (C₄H₆)_y· (C₃H₃N)_z , CAS Registry Number 9003-56-9, and ChemSpider 23143.

ABS is derived from acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene and carbon. Acrylonitrile is a synthetic monomer produced from propylene and ammonia; butadiene is a petroleum hydrocarbon obtained from the C4 fraction of steam cracking; styrene monomer is made by dehydrogenation of ethyl benzene — a hydrocarbon obtained in the reaction of ethylene and benzene.

ABS is a common thermoplastic that has a melting point of approximately 105 °C (221 °F). A thermoplastic is a polymer that softens and turns to liquid when heated and conversely solidifies to a glass-like state when cooled. ABS is a copolymer, actually a terpolymer because of its three monomer constituents, made by

polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene. The proportions can vary from 15 to 35% acrylonitrile, 5 to 30% butadiene and 40 to 60% styrene. The result is a long chain of polybutadiene criss-crossed with shorter chains of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile). The nitrile groups from neighboring chains, being polar, attract each other and bind the chains together, making ABS stronger than pure polystyrene. The styrene gives the plastic a shiny, impervious surface. The butadiene, a rubbery substance, provides resilience even at low temperatures.

For the majority of applications, ABS can be used between −25 and 60 °C (−13 and 140 °F) as its mechanical properties vary with temperature. The properties are created by rubber toughening, where fine particles of elastomer are distributed throughout the rigid matrix.

Clan table lamp | Studio 6G | Harvey Guzzini, Italy | 1968

The Clan table lamp is another of Studio 6G and Guzzini’s great designs. The Clan is a member of the family of lamps that includes the Bud pendant hanging lamp in two sizes, the Bud ceiling lamp, the Flash floor lamp, and the Lucerna adjustable floor lamp. While called a table lamp by Guzzini, it is large enough to sit on the floor. This versatility is similar to that afforded by the Pallade lamp for Artemide by Studio Tetrarch (Adelaide Bonati, Silvio Bonatti, Enrico De Munari, and Carla Federspiel) also designed in 1968. The Pallade could be used as a floor or hanging lamp.

The Clan lamp was in production from 1968 to 1977. Sizes 350mm diameter by 380mm height (PVC base), 460mm diameter by 510mm height (PVC base), and 350mm diameter by 380mm height (metal base). The lamps accept a 60W E27 incandescent bulb.
