At least eleven people saw a low-flying lit object head towards the harbour. Multiple witnesses reported hearing a whistling sound “like a bomb,” then a “whoosh,” and finally a loud bang, as it plunged into the Gulf of Maine.

Assuming an airplane crash, RCMP officers arrived at the scene within minutes, and watched the object sink and disappear from view. Within half an hour of the crash, local fishing boats and Canadian Coast Guard were searching the site for survivors. None were found. There was no debris. No airplanes were missing.

Two days after the incident, a detachment of Royal Canadian Navy divers spent three days searching the seafloor of the Gulf of Maine off Shag Harbor. No trace was found.

The incident was considered by the Condon Committee as “Case 34, North Atlantic, Fall 1967” which was included in their final report as an unsolved case. They concluded that “No further investigation by the project was considered justifiable, particularly in view of the immediate and thorough search that had been carried out by the RCMP and the Maritime Command.”

The Pizzagate signal was primarily spread through Twitter, and a disproportionate number of tweets about it came from the Czech Republic, Cyprus, and Vietnam, mostly through bot accounts.

The experiment was unexpectedly successful, as most dramatically evidenced by a gunman who stormed Comet Ping Pong pizzeria, searching for a basement which does not exist. A December 2016 poll found that 9% of voters — and 5% of self-identified Clinton voters — believed that “Hillary Clinton is connected to a child sex ring run from a Pizzeria in DC.”

The subjects of the study have taken the ludicrous signal and turned it into a group identity, an experiment now free in the wild, mutating wildly. And while the number of affected subjects is relatively small, they do number in the millions and tend towards extreme paranoia and violence.

One optimistic hypothesis is that the “pizzagate” signal was also used to encourage the affected subjects to publicly tag themselves as unstable extremists, thus allowing easier tracking of their beliefs and activities. A less optimistic hypothesis is that they have been gathered into a credulous militia, willing to obey any order, no matter how insane.

In the parlance of our times, to “red pill” is to become aware of the lies that undergird modern civilization, thereby giving you license to act like a douche online. Since most of the people who believe they have “red pilled” were already acting like douches online, the effect of this concept boils down to a slightly greater sense of entitlement among insular communities of already-entitled douches. All of this is well known, and not very interesting.

The interesting thing about the red pill concept is that it is actually the exact inverse of what its proponents claim. The reference is to the 1999 movie The Matrix, in which a hacker bro is offered a choice between a blue pill, to “believe whatever you want.” Or a red pill, to “see how deep the rabbit hole goes.”

In spite of the reference to the drug-induced hallucinations of Alice in Wonderland, he takes the red pill. He then experiences the physical death of his body, leaves the confines of the apparent world, and comes to the realization that he is no mere hacker bro — he is in fact the One True Hacker Jesus, Webmaster of the Universe.

The ludicrousness of this savior scenario is painfully emphasized in the Matrix sequels, in which Hacker Jesus engages in utterly pointless fake fights in a fake world, and confronts the Father God instantiated as Colonel Sanders. To raise the stakes, the Hacker Jesus Powers eventually bleed over into the “real” world, revealing the entire scenario for what it is — a delusion.

The red pill was in fact a trap. And what better trap for someone who thinks they’re special than to make them think they’ve escaped the world and become its savior?

What is eventually revealed by the Matrix sequels — the way they’re irrational-yet-boring like listening to someone narrate their dreams — is that from the point of swallowing the “red pill,” we are actually watching the extended hallucination at the end of the movie Brazil. With no hope for escape, the prisoner fever-dreams themselves as a heroic savior, free of all constraints.

The red pill is the final, most horrifying imprisoning illusion — escape from the world itself.

The Lamanites are one of the people described in the Book of Mormon, usually portrayed as dark-skinned, wicked rivals to the lighter-skinned, righteous Nephites. Both of are said to be descendants of Israelites who traveled to the New World by in coffin-like barges circa 600 BC, none of which has any basis in historical or archeological fact.

The Church of Latter-Day Saints used to suggest that the indigenous peoples of the Americas were decendents of the Lamanites. In and effort to sidestep the terrible racism and glaring impossibility of this narrative, Mormon scholars turned to a “limited geography” model, which conveniently erases all genetic and cultural connection between Lamanites and modern people. This tactic — suggesting that the Lamanites were totally real but left absolutely no trace whatsoever — has issues. Issues which are shared by many other faith communities.
