Like so many first-time con-goers, I made some rookie mistakes. From packing the wrong things, to buying my badge from a sketchy seller (spoiler alert: it didn’t work), to not budgeting for food, I learned the hard way what not to do.

Here’s everything I wish I knew before going to Comic-Con, so you can walk in like a pro, not a panic-stricken newbie.

1. Tickets (a.k.a. “Badges”) Are Hard to Get—and Easy to Mess Up

Let’s start with the most painful part of my Comic-Con experience: the ticket. Or, more specifically, the fake ticket.

I had missed the official on-sale and panicked. I didn’t know how strict Comic-Con was about badge transfers, so I bought a “Sunday pass” from a seller I found on a fan forum. • If a deal sounds too good to be true, it is.

Don’t let FOMO push you into making a bad call. If you miss the badge sale, volunteer opportunities or waitlist releases are safer options.

2. You Need a Plan, or Comic-Con Will Eat You Alive

This is not your local street fair. Comic-Con is a beast of an event.

There are:

• Dozens of panels happening simultaneously
• An exhibit hall the size of a small airport
• Off-site activations, celebrity signings, screenings, workshops, gaming lounges, and more
• Tens of thousands of people—many in full cosplay—moving in every direction

If you just show up and wing it, you’ll either spend half the day in the wrong line or miss everything you wanted to see.

What I wish I knew:

• Download the official app ahead of time and favorite your must-see panels and booths.
• Know where your lines are (some start forming hours early).
• Give yourself time between panels—walking from Ballroom 20 to Hall H isn’t a quick jog.
• Make peace with the fact that you won’t see everything—pick your top 3–5 must-dos per day and be flexible with the rest.

3. Pack Like You’re Going to War (Because You Are)

No one warned me just how physically demanding Comic-Con would be. I wore cute sneakers and brought a shoulder bag. Big mistake.

By midday, my feet were aching, my shoulder hurt from carrying freebies, and I was dehydrated and grumpy.

What I wish I knew:

• Bring a comfortable backpack
• Pack snacks, water, painkillers, and maybe even a portable charger
• Dress in layers (air conditioning inside, blazing heat outside)
• Bring hand sanitizer, gum/mints, and backup socks if you’re in costume
• Cosplayers: consider a “comfort kit”—needle/thread, extra pins, makeup wipes, and fashion tape

Even if you’re just “browsing,” you’ll probably walk 6–8 miles over the course of a day. Prepare accordingly.

4. The Exhibit Hall Is a Trap (and I Loved Every Minute of It)

The main exhibit floor is Comic-Con’s crown jewel—a sprawling, neon-splashed wonderland of comics, collectibles, original art, brand activations, and pop culture merch you didn’t know you needed.

But it’s also overwhelming, packed shoulder-to-shoulder, and designed to separate you from your money.

What I wish I knew:

• Set a daily budget before you walk in
• If you see a rare item you love, grab it—you might not find it again
• Bring a small poster tube or document folder for prints and autographs
• Use Venmo or contactless cards (cash slows you down and many booths won’t take it)
• Some vendors offer Sunday discounts—but don’t count on limited items being available by then

Also: plan how you’ll carry your haul. A lightweight foldable tote bag inside your main backpack works great.

5. You Don’t Have to Camp Out for Everything (But Sometimes It’s Worth It)

Hall H—the biggest room at SDCC—is legendary for its multi-hour (sometimes overnight) lines. And yes, the buzz around major Marvel or Star Wars panels is electric.

But not every line is worth it.

What I wish I knew:

• Some of the best panels and Q&As happen in smaller rooms with almost no wait
• You can often catch recaps, trailers, and clips online shortly after
• If you’re going to camp out, bring layers, snacks, and something soft to sit on
• Chat with people in line—fandom folks are incredibly welcoming and helpful

Missing Hall H doesn’t mean you’re missing Comic-Con. It means you have more time to explore the rest of it.

6. Food is a Disaster. Plan Ahead.

Between overpriced convention center food and hour-long waits for off-site eats, food at Comic-Con is the ultimate boss fight.

What I wish I knew:

• Eat a solid breakfast before you enter
• Pack protein bars, fruit, trail mix—anything non-perishable and filling
• Download delivery apps for nearby restaurants if you can slip away
• Off-site food trucks often serve better and cheaper meals (but lines are still long)
• Hydration is key—bring a reusable bottle you can refill inside

Also, if you have dietary restrictions, research your options in advance. Vegan and gluten-free food options exist—but you may have to look for them.

7. Cosplay Is Not Required—But It’s Amazing

You don’t have to dress up to enjoy Comic-Con. But if you’ve ever considered it, this is the place to do it.

• If you’re shy, consider wearing something low-key—like a graphic tee, subtle makeup, or a prop accessory

Some of my favorite memories happened outside the convention center: a rooftop Stranger Things pop-up, an immersive Star Trek VR game, a free panel in a bookstore featuring indie artists.

• Many off-site activations don’t require a badge
• Big brands often set up immersive events that are open to the public
• Lines are shorter early in the day or late afternoon
• Follow hashtags and Reddit threads for real-time tips on where to go and when

This is a great way to experience the excitement of Comic-Con without the chaos of the main floor.

9. You Will Be Tired, Broke, and Blissfully Happy

Yes, Comic-Con is expensive. And chaotic. And noisy. And yes, you’ll probably lose your voice, misplace your badge once, and wonder why you didn’t just stay home and watch YouTube.

If you’re lucky enough to score a badge (from a real, official seller!), Comic-Con is an unforgettable adventure. It’s overwhelming in the best way. It’s crowded, yes—but it’s also a space where fandom becomes family.

Just do yourself a favor and prepare properly:

• Buy your badge from official channels only
• Plan your schedule but stay flexible
• Take care of your body—hydrate, eat, and rest when you can
• Be open to the weird and wonderful surprises that happen when thousands of passionate fans get together

And when it’s over? You’ll need a nap, a shower, and maybe a few days to process it all.
