Memorial Day Weekend is special for Occupy Detroit. We’ll be holding the regularly scheduled Saturday General Assembly on SUNDAY, May 27, 2012 in the lot at West Chicago and Appoline, Detroit. We have been discussing holding neighborhood General Assemblies through the winter months, now that the weather is pleasant it is time to see that intention come to fruition. Bring food to grill and share, time for community fun and sharing before and following the assembly. If you are in a neighborhood that you would like to see an Occupy Detroit General Assembly held, with community support present – we would like to hear from you! May 17, 2012, Detroit – Free Detroit – No Consent was founded on April 4, 2012 – the day that five City Council members voted to accept the state proposed “Financial Stability Agreement” – another variation of the “Financial Management Law”. That day marked the end of Democracy in the City of Detroit! We refuse to hand over our constitutionally sanctioned rights to the State of Michigan. Public Act 4 taxes the people; however, the people are no longer represented by the officials that were elected – taxation without representation is horrifically unconstitutional. Presently “we the people” do not have a voice regarding the management and future of Detroit. We view Pubic Act 4 as a Racist Test Case. The Consent Agreement and the Emergency Manager strategies are racist and white supremacist in effect. Detroit Department of Human Services is being challenged by Michigan Department of Human Services for de-designation as the administrator for Emergency Services to Detroiters through a $72 million Community Services Block Grant (CSBG). The CSBG provides funds for needy residents to receive assistance. A court case between APTE President Cecily McClelland and Dempsey Addison (from Detroit Department of Human Services) Vs Maura Corrigan (Director of Michigan Dept Human Services), Mayor Bing, and Kirk Lewis will begin at 11am Friday, May 11 on the 11th floor of the Coleman A Young Municipal Building. This case states Maura Corrigan illegally cut off CSBG funding to the City of Detroit and the Mayor approved cutting off funding without proper process on February 8, 2012. Detroit City Council did not approve of de-designation when presented March 15, nor has the public had an opportunity for hearing. National Day of Protest Against Bank of America Wednesday – May 9, 2012 – 4:00 P.M. 500 Griswold St., Detroit The Mayor and City Council caved in to Gov. Snyder and Wall Street by handing the City over to a Financial Advisory Board (FSA). The purpose for the FSA is to guarantee the looting of Detroit by the banks by insuring the “payment in full of the scheduled debt service requirements on all bonds, notes and municipal securities” (Public Act 4). According to Snyder’s financial review team, Detroit paid $597 million to the banks in 2010 for debt service. The City’s long-term debt to the banks is an amazing $16.9 billion ($4.9 billion is interest). The same banks that destroyed the neighborhoods of Detroit by their racist, predatory, sub-prime, criminal mortgages will be assured of getting paid from the City’s treasury. The recent “The System in Crisis: A Teach-In for the 99%,” co-sponsored by Occupy Detroit and the Wayne State University chapter of the National Lawyer’s Guild, was a dynamic and energetic exploration of the financial crisis and its impacts on ordinary people. With nearly 150 people attending sessions throughout the day, the teach-in was a vibrant source of conversations about all that is broken about the current system and what the 99% can do about it. The day’s events kicked off with a screening of the Academy Award winning documentaryInside Job, which offers a scathing indictment of the structures of greed and corruption that led to the financial collapse of 2008. A discussion, led by Wayne State history professor Fran Shor, followed the screening.
