Un-announced to us locals, it was quite a surprise to see horses, let alone old-fashioned wagons, trot down Sunset Boulevard to the shore. He's on a horse and wagon trip from Canada to Mexico, of which he hopes to complete yet this year. During the "Lost Sea Expedition" his goal is to document marine fossils of the Western Interior Seaway, an inland sea that spanned the Great Plains long before you and I were living here.

A resident of Southern Pines, North Carolina, Bernie has also traveled 3500 miles by mule from Oriental, North Carolina to San Diego, California on a journey that took him one year to complete at a pace of 8 miles per day. This is only after he circumnavigated the globe alone in a sailing boat. His adventures are really interesting and you can find out more at http://www.riverearth.com/.

Written By: Jake Foutz - Marketing Supervisor, Sunset Properties

The 29th Annual North Carolina Oyster Festival was held this past weekend in Ocean Isle Beach, beside the Museum of Coastal Carolina. Thousands of visitors came back to enjoy the great music, food, and arts and crafts vendors despite the unusually chilly fall temperatures, which hoovered between the low 50's and mid-60's. The sunshine still came out and greeted all the festival-goers.

Sunset Properties had a booth there both days and appreciate all those who stopped by. Our staff handed out colorful koozies and frisbees along with property management information and sales information. Our annual Free Weekend giveaway was a big hit with the chance to also win a Sunset Beach bridge puzzle on the top of every hour. Janet Karper from Ashland, Ohio was drawn as the winner of our Free Weekend at the Beach. She will get the chance to stay for two nights, free of charge, between the months of October - March. Congratulations to Janet and those who will be coming down with her to enjoy her stay.

As per the Brunswick County Chamber's site for the Oyster Festival, next year's event will be held October 16 - 17. It's a good idea to plan a fall trip around the popular two day festival. There's plenty to do and the weather is generally pretty mild. See you next year!

Written By: Jake Foutz - Marketing Supervisor, Sunset Properties

Kris Ewert Wins Free Weekend Stay

Kris Ewert, from Minnesota, has won a free weekend at the beach! Ocean Isle's annual Trash Bash was held Saturday October 3rd. Residents of Ocean Isle gather every year to clean up our island and keep it looking beautiful! Don't forget about the 29th Annual Oyster Festival taking place October 17th & 18th here on the island. There will be numerous vendors and things to do such as a road race, oyster shucking contest, and much more. After enjoying the Oyster Festival, take a ride over to Sunset Beach the evening of the 17th and join the Sunset Properties staff and homeowners for an outside movie night. Bring your lawn chair and join us!

Written by: Casey Holcombe - Rental Manager Ocean Isle Beach office

October - Time to Open the Windows!

With the first day of October coming up tomorrow, all of us islanders can finally feel a noticeable change in the weather. It's not so hot anymore and the windows on my cottage stay open through the night. Tonight, we have temperatures looming around 60 degrees. Not so bad considering we had a good day in the high 70's. October usually brings good beach weather and cooler evenings perfect for a late night stroll along the shore. For the most part, the high humidity is gone.

A reminder: The annual Sunset at Sunset celebration is this coming Saturday (October 3rd) beside the Ingram Planetarium. Lots of fun with live bands, local food vendors, and arts and crafts. There is a slight chance of rain in the forecast, but we're still hoping for great fall weather. Come out and see us at our booth and grab some FREE stuff!

Give us a call if you need a place to stay! Both events will have plenty of entertainment, including live local bands, and food vendors.

We have plenty of nightly rentals still available for both weekends. This is a great opportunity for the whole family to get away for a short weekend. Sunset Properties is a sponsor for both events. We'll have a booth set up with plenty of give-aways. We were able to tour it as part of a recent Brunswick Chamber of Commerce event, and we had to drag the kids out the door at the end. This is a great spot to keep in mind when you're looking for something new to do off the beach.

The center includes a state-of-art bowling center (32 lanes); a laser tag area (a favorite spot for our two boys); an arcade area (that even the adults had fun in); a 9 hole mini-golf area (fun for the younger kids); and a full restaurant (for those that want to let the kids play while the adults enjoy a quiet meal).

The center is located next to Lowes Home Improvement off of Highway 130 at US 17-close to the area's movie theater. Keep Planet Fun in mind for a rainy day or evening activity on your next vacation to Ocean Isle Beach or Sunset Beach.

Make a Wish to Come Back to the Beach!

I’m walking the beach tonight. There’s a cool breeze blowing from the west and flashes of heat lightning over the ocean. At ten o’clock there is no one on the beach, except for me. I take a seat in the sand under a crystal clear sky with millions of stars and try my best to recall the summer. Many times I find it hard to concentrate and think out here with the soothing sounds of the ocean.

It was a great summer. Familiar faces and new guests came to the beach even in this tough economy. It’s such a great feeling to see families out on the beach having a great time; knowing that this year has been a pretty stressful year. Now schools are in session and families have left town. With a blink of an eye, June has turned into September, and the beach has turned into somewhat of a ghost town. We do have guests that enjoy the quiet, peaceful feeling that the off-season months bring. I highly suggest giving it a try.

Labor Day weekend will bring a burst of energy back to the beach as families drive in for that one last breath of summer. A lot of our vacation homes do support a nightly stay, so bring your family down to the beach to celebrate Labor Day! With warm temperatures and 85 degree ocean water, this weekend is tough to pass up. Restaurants and attractions are still open. Check our website for a place to stay or give us a call in the coming days to see what’s available.

Written By: Jake Foutz - Marketing Supervisor, Sunset Properties

Out on the Water With the Hurricane Fleet

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 234px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lEE3fXi7Di0/SpPd5ve5mJI/AAAAAAAAACs/rvcta3DigO4/s320/marshboat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373882764451485842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lEE3fXi7Di0/SpPd1GJO5OI/AAAAAAAAACk/ueoi3DKdokA/s320/sunsetboat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373882684635276514" />
Sunset Properties held an employee outing on one of Hurricane Fleet’s fishing boats last week. We took an evening cruise out to the Sunset Beach bridge and jetties that separate our islands from the busier stretch of South Carolina’s Grand Strand. I enjoyed the much needed time on the water and seeing a part of the community that I normally wouldn’t see from the island. We all had the opportunity to see the bridge from the water and catch a memorable sunset off the jetties at Bird Island. The great hospitality of Hurricane Fleet’s captain and crew kept us relaxed and at ease on the water.

For over 25 years, the Hurricane Fleet has been the premier choice of fishing for guests. They offer group fishing trips, Tuna fishing, Shark fishing, and Dolphin sightseeing tours where you can also see how shrimpers make their living. The captain and crew are very knowledgeable about the waterways and do everything possible to ensure a great time. I highly recommend scheduling a morning or afternoon to go fishing, or cruising, with the Hurricane Fleet. Do check out their website for more helpful information.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lEE3fXi7Di0/SpPdusoV8LI/AAAAAAAAACc/jiP4aMuasLM/s320/boat+side.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373882574707224754" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lEE3fXi7Di0/SpPdjZk6IJI/AAAAAAAAACU/UP0Q6Ol66DQ/s320/boat1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373882380613984402" />

Written By: Jake Foutz - Marketing Supervisor, Sunset Properties
Pictures By: Jake Foutz

Try the Gelati at Sunset Slush

This past week, I had the opportunity to get away and visit my favorite refreshment stand. After a long day at work and then the beach, I visited my friends at Sunset Slush for a cool treat. I typically stick with my usual Mango and Lemon Lime combination, but I was in for something different that night.

During my previous visits to Sunset Slush, I'd shy away from the Gelati because I thought it had something to do with ice cream and coffee. Well, I don't like coffee and never will. But, a Gelati is actually a combination of ice cream and your flavor of choice for Italian Ice. I decided to try Mango and Vanilla ice cream, in which they refer to it as Creamsicle. I was blown away with incredible taste! The Gelati has stolen my attention and I'll remember to grab a larger size next time I visit.

Sunset Slush has many different flavors of Italian Ice and can make up anything you dream. Try their Gelati selections and ask for a Rootbeer Float or even an Iced Coffee flavored Gelati next time you visit. How about a Gelati Pie for the whole family? These are made with ice cream and Italian Ice with a tasty graham cracker crust. Their pies are perfect to take back to the cottage and enjoy for desert after a family cook-out.

Written By: Jake Foutz - Marketing Supervisor, Sunset Properties

Working At The Beach

Ocean Isle Beach is a great place to work, especially during the summer months. There is never a dull moment here at the beach as soon as schools let out. Many sit behind a desk all summer just waiting for that short vacation; I say why wait for that short getaway when I can "work" at my favorite vacation destination all summer long.

The sun, the sand and the swimsuits; who wouldn't want to work at the beach? Ever since I was younger I have enjoyed going on vacation with the family every summer to the beach. There is nothing quite like it. When I left home for college I moved to the Myrtle Beach area so I could enjoy the beach all year long.

I've been living at the beach for about three and a half years now and it never gets boring, especially with my new job here at Sunset Properties. It's hard to describe the the everyday excitement that one encounters while working at Ocean Isle Beach, and the craziness that occurs when working on a busy Saturday here. But all in all there is no other place that I would rather be than here working at Ocean Isle Beach.

Written By: Chris Schoelen - Marketing Intern, Sunset Properties

OIB Beach Renourishment

We're on track for our beach renourishment again this year. The project will go out for bid on July 15 with a bid opening of August 13 and contract award by end of September. A few to consider include:

*The Town of Ocean Isle has an annual July 4th parade-it's a lot of fun to check out the decorated golf carts! This year's event will be held on Sunday, July 5th starting at 2 pm on the island.

*The Town of Calabash is hosting music and fireworks the night of the 3rd, starting at 7 pm down by its riverfront. The fireworks start at dark, approximately 9 pm.

*The Town of Southport is the site of North Carolina's official July 4th celebration. It's only a 30 minute drive from the island. The event includes a parade and fair during the day, and then fireworks down by the riverfront that night. If you go, plan to stay-this is a huge event-past years have had over 50,000 attend.

We hope you enjoy the holiday!

Ocean Isle Beach VIP Homes Well Received By Guests

We are in the 4th week of our VIP Home program on Ocean Isle Beach. Our guests have appreciated the fact that they can check –in at their home as early as 12:00 noon. This allows them the opportunity to get the children out of the car and on to the beach or pool. They will find a cooler filled with soft drinks when they arrive. We also provide our guests with some beach chairs to use during their stay.

I have had our guests tell me that it is as if they pick up another day of vacation by arriving early. The shopping is much easier without the crowds and you are settled in your vacation home hours before other vacationers. We have even made check-out simple. You just leave the keys on the counter when you depart. We even provide a daily newspaper so they can keep up with what’s going on in the world.

Many vacation homes are equipped with entertainment equipment that can challenge most adults. It is nice to have the attendant show you how to operate these systems so that they can enjoy them during their stay. The attendant will also share information about the island and surrounding area. Sunset Properties has launched the PERKS CLUB this year. This allows our guests to receive discounts from merchants, entertainment and eating establishments by simply showing their property key tag when purchasing or ordering. All this information and more will be provided be the attendant.

Last but not least, we now have an amenity that has been long in coming. Kid-Sitters is a fun place to drop off the children while you enjoy some adult time while vacationing. They can play Wii, Playstation, board games or watch a movie all while under the supervision of an adult.
It’s time to make that decision to take a vacation on Ocean Isle Beach.

Choose one of our VIP Homes and find out what it’s like to be treated to a first class vacation.

Steven W. In the past six months 39 properties have gone under contract. Specifically, 26 single family homes and 14 condos. In the same period last year there were 40. The two properties types in highest demand are condos and canal homes.

So while it's back-to-basics, second or vacation homes have remained in demand. No doubt because of the simple joys of having a family vacation home and today's stellar buying environment of low rates and attractive pricing.

There are some really great buying opportunities here and would encourage you to consider making the investment for your family and getting in at what must be near, if not bottom.

I'm here and happy to help you in your consideration of real estate while on vacation. If your not interested in a discussion and would prefer to drive the island on your own, be sure to pick up a free listings sheet at the front door of Sunset Properties' Ocean Isle Beach office at 102 Causeway Dr. next to the Causeway Gourmet, Kid Sitters, & Madeline's Play House.

Diane Dalen
Broker In Charge
Sunset Properties
Ocean Isle Beach

Much Needed Alone Time

Coming to Ocean Isle Beach is always a special time for me and my family. This year's visit will go down as the best one yet. With the hustle and bustle of work, soccer games, chores around the house, Ocean Isle Beach has always been an escape from normal life. Spending a week with my wife and kids is a great time, but it can be stressful. Sometimes when we have these family vacations, we forget we are not used to spending 24/7 with our wife and kids, and they are certainly not used to spending so much time with Dad. We often feel let down when our time together just doesn't live up to the expectations.
This week, I discovered something I haven't experienced in such a long time, alone time with my wife. It was an escape from cell phones, soccer games, and the hassles of work. Kid-Sitters made it all possible. We are like most parents and have a hard time trusting others with our kids, and have always felt guilty leaving our kids with someone else while we enjoy ourselves. The combination of being away at Ocean Isle Beach and Kid-Sitters, I was able to just walk on the beach with my wife, have dinner, and relax on the balcony of our vacation rental home. I have forgotten how lovely my wife is and how much I need and cherish her. I've learned to take the time and re-kindle the flame that really never goes out, it just gets obstructed by life.

After our "night out" the rest of the vacation was truly a family blessing, and we left Ocean Isle Beach fulfilled. I thank Ocean Isle Beach, my family, and Kid-Sitters for the best vacation I ever had. Just remember to take the time to "smell the roses." You might be surprised to learn that "rose" lives in your home everyday, and I proudly call her my wife! Check out Kid-Sitters.... you, your wife, and kids will be glad you did!

Signed,

Ocean Isle Beach on my brain, and now in my heart

Be a VIP in Ocean Isle Beach This Summer!!

In the past week, Sunset Properties introduced their NEW VIP program for Ocean Isle Beach. With this premier program, guests will be able to check in at noon, instead of the traditional 3:30 check-in time. The house attendant for the vacation home will have a bedroom, bathroom, and refrigerator ready for the guest. Get changed and head to the beach, pool, or beat the crowds at the grocery store while the attendant cleans the rest of your home. We'll have a cooler stocked with cold soft drinks for you at arrival.

There are three beautiful beach homes participating in the VIP program this year. Belle Vista, 60 Steps to Paradise, and Another Blessing have joined forces to offer you the best of the best. They all come with amazing ocean views, private pools, and spacious interiors. Along with early check-in and a cooler that you can use throughout your vacation, you'll also have access to a few signature beach chairs and a daily newspaper (delivered to your door by 9:00 am). No need to check-out at the rental office, just leave your house keys on the kitchen counter.

A PERFECT vacation for the PREMIER vacationer. CLICK HERE for more details!

Written By: Jake Foutz - Marketing Supervisor, Sunset Properties

Amusement Park Reopens

Freestyle Music Park, just a 30 minute drive from the island, reopened on Memorial Day Weekend.

The park is rebranded from the former Hard Rock Park. Residents of the Carolinas are eligible for a $10 discount off the daily admission price through June 14th.

New rides have been added for the kids, and the same exciting roller coasters from last year's park remain. Anyone could join us on the beach to fly kites, it wasn't just open to our guests. The weather couldn't have been any better for flying kites! We had sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 80's with a good steady wind blowing across the beach. Although we only had a few participants, it was fun meeting new people and "working" on the beach.

A simple reception was held back at our office with guests and participants. The registration fee is $10, and the full amount will be donated to the volunteers of Bird Island to help with the cost of their summer educational tours of that island. Registered participants will receive an event t-shirt. Just fill out the registration form and either send or drop it at the main Sunset Properties office on Sunset Beach.

We'll have a table set up near the island's gazebo that day for the event, and plan to hand out some awards afterwards at a brief ceremony at our office. One of our PERKS CLUB partners-Sunset Slush-will be serving free Italian Ice at our office for everyone's enjoyment that afternoon.

So if you'll be in the area, come on out to either fly a kite, or just watch. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we'll try it again the next day on Sunday starting at noon (though we hope we don't have to take up any of Mother's Day for the event!).

Kite Flying Tips

I’ve been flying kites at Sunset Beach for 30 years and as an Island homeowner would like to offer you some information and a few tips.

Safety First!

Flying any kind of kite on the beach can be dangerous because of shifting, “fluky” winds, experience level, and speed & control issues. Landing a kite or crash landing a kite in the dunes can cause problems. Climbing into the dunes to retrieve your kite causes the type of erosion we are trying to avoid. In the dunes your feet and your kite will find sand-spurs and the sand grasses will cut the rip-stop nylon many kite sails are made of. Landing a kite on the beach requires a healthy sense of awareness of the people around you and your kite’s “intended” landing spot. Think …“what is my contingency plan if I have a problem landing?” Here are 4 additional safety tips:

1. Always put other’s safety first
2. Fly at low tide so you have plenty of space.
3. If you are working on your skill level consider flying at the East or West end of the Island

Types of Kites There are 3 basic types of kites.

1. Single line. The traditional single line kite that we fly/make as kids- usually diamond shape or maybe a box kite. Now available in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and materials. Accessories include light kits for night flying, and things that can be sent up and down the kite string while the kite is in the air. Great for the beach.

2. Rokaku. This is single line kite flying designed for “kite fighting” where the object is to knock an opponent’s kite out of the air. These kites and their strings come in many different sizes, shapes, and materials. The Japanese have done this for centuries. This is a specialty form of kite flying and requires a special venue.

3. Stunt Kites. These are dual or quad line kites that are controlled by the “pilot” and are the ones you have seen doing crazy spins, dives, crashes and other “stunts” at the beach. They are a lot of fun and come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and materials. Usually they are diamond shaped with a long tail (a great beginner kite), or delta shaped, or bat-winged shaped, or parafoil shaped. They cost anywhere from $20 to $300 dollars and come with sophisticated strings that may be 85 to 150 feet long requiring 300 feet of diameter for a safe ground pass. Great fun for the beach but requires extra attention to safety principles. Usually stunt kite competitions are broken into 3 categories:

1. Precision, speed, and acrobatic maneuvers
2. Ballet- set to music and flying “pretty”
3. Formation flying- with two-four pilot

History of the Stunt Kite -How to buy and learn to fly a stunt kite.

I learned the basic skills to fly a stunt kite safely by using a diamond shaped kite with a 40 foot tail and dual control lines- still made by Trylby. What I like about this kite, for learning the skills, is that the tail makes it stable and slows it down enough that you can make mistakes and still recover. The kite is forgiving and can take repeated crashes, comes complete as a package and is inexpensive. There are many other beginner kites out there, but I like this one. You can find it on the internet or at most kite stores or at Kligs Kites of Myrtle Beach. After you have mastered safe flying skills you can decide on a more sophisticated kite as an investment. I have about 20 stunt kites, but my favorites are still the ones I bought 25 years ago made by Top Of The Line Kite Company- The Hawaiian Team Kite and the Spinoff Kite. Four guys from California made a few dual line kites brought them to an air show demonstration, the Blue Angels were performing, saw the kites and liked them, asked the guys to make them some, and the rest is history.

Ambassadors for the Sport – A Final Thought.

Each of us has a responsibility to be courteous and safe- mindful and respectful of all people at the beach. Kites can be noisy and they can travel at speeds of 60 mph; Kevlar strings can hurt and cut. Please go above and beyond to be friendly, courteous, and safe. Have fun, help each other, and give our sport a good reputation so that we are always welcome at the beach.

Written By: Ted Janes, a homeowner at Sunset Properties

Speaking of Fishing -

Captain Brant of the Ocean Isle Fishing Center is sponsoring the Jolly Mon King Classic again this year.

This year's tournament is scheduled for June 19 - 21st at the Ocean Isle Fishing Center. If you're planning on fishing while on vacation this year, you'll have to get a license. The only places you don't need a license are the fishing pier and a charter boat trip. Out of state residents pay $10 for a 10 day license, and in state residents will need to pay $5 for a 10 day license.

Call Island Tackle for more information on purchasing fishing licenses for your vacation.
